    Thank you for posting this video!!! I am currently in a scuba dive class and I was not understanding the concept of equalizing my ears. It was causing me a lot of anxiety because everyone was descending much faster and I was still struggling to equalize. Your video has helped me so much though, I really appreciate how clearly you explained this technique without overly technical terms

    @9:56 This is the best advice I've ever heard, I've seen a lot of instructors teach new divers different techniques, but none of them mention "do it longer and let the pressure build up".
    I'm always having some trouble equalizing my ear, I've tried all different techniques and the only one that MIGHT work on me was taking a big breath, pinching my nose, and blowing hard and short. On my 40ish dive I decided to blow long and gently, which was a magic discovery. I have never had any equalizing issues since, I wish I could find this video earlier.

    Your explanation is very clear and concise. I had my 1st open-water dive yesterday, 13.2 meters. I was having difficulty equalizing my ears because my left ear wouldn't equalise, that's why it took me time to descend. I wish I had seen your video before I dove. But still, thank you for making this video. I will practice all of these techniques, and see what's gonna work best for me the next time I dive.

    After all this time I was never shown the nose pinch technique properly. I wish someone had of told me earlier to use less pressure but hold the pressure for longer... that technique really works and is so much more comfortable.

    This was really helpful. I just did my first dive the other day and I eventually had to come back up because I just could not get the pain to go away. I’m still trying to get the bubble feeling out of my ears today! I had no idea if I had equalized the entire way down it would’ve been better and furthermore, I had NO idea that equalizing was that critical to the point experienced divers cancel their dives if they’re having issues. I feel a lot better about my failed mission lol

    • @MarcelVanDenBerg1
      @MarcelVanDenBerg1  3 роки тому

      Good to hear Leanna! Trust me we all have these issues sometimes especially as beginner divers.
      It is a feeling when to equalize and like learning to ride a bicycle you will get it at one point.
      Whatever happens if it doesn’t work or feel bad just cancel the dive and try another :)

    I've always taken it for granted but it's really useful when diving - I can just press the back of my tongue to the roof and blow, and it equalizes them. Opening my jaw a little bit makes it extra easy to do.

    Excellent training. Wish I had viewed it one month ago. I just returned (12/30/18) from dive trip to Fiji. First dive OK. Second dive after 90 min surf interval not OK. Could not equalize pressure in right ear. Tried ascending to depth where discomfort gone, but no luck equalizing. Aborted dive. Able to equalize right ear after 5 mins in boat. Same experience next day. First dive OK. Second dive aborted. Skipped diving on day 3. On day four, had to abort first dive. Did not attempt second dive. Day 5 (final day), first dive OK. Aborted second dive. No signs of congestion, but never occurred to me to blow my nose. Plus, I worried that I was a drag on the group, so I hurried through attempts to equalize. Lessons learned: 1.) Don't rush the descent, 2.) Blow my nose, Again, excellent video.

    • @MarcelVanDenBerg1
      @MarcelVanDenBerg1  5 років тому +1

      Hi David,
      Thank you for you comment and your case is something I have seen a lot with divers, and to be honest I also had similar experiences like that. All good on the first dive and then problems equalizing my ears on on the second dive.
      To be honest on the day's that I felt super fit with no congestion, I had equalizing issues. But the reason that I could not equalize my ears on those day's was because I tried to go down to quick and congestion was more hidden away in my sinuses. By just taking it more easy and blowing my nose (gently, but long) before and during ascent cleared all the congestion in my sinuses and made it much more easier to equalize my ears.

    I had to reschedule my dive certification today because I was unable to equalize my right ear. Wish I saw this video before today. I was trying the first method during my dive, but that did not work for me. While watching the tutorial, I tried the third method and I believe that is the best fit for me. The third method cleared my right ear, which was still kinda blocked. Thank you.

      my husband and i went scuba diving for the first time today in the Philippines, he is complaining that his ears still feel like they have water in them from equalizing i think. the experienced diver we went with said to turn your head and rub behind your ears and i think water went deep in his ears and he cant get it out. is this common? he also spit blood when he reached the service. the experienced diver said thats common? any thoughts or suggestions?

    • @MarcelVanDenBerg1
      @MarcelVanDenBerg1  5 років тому

      Hi, sorry for my late reply
      There can be different reasons for the feeling of having water in the ear, but what I found out was most common was that he probably has wax in the ear and needs to flush it.
      A bit of blood coming out can mean something harmless like a ruptured vain because of a reverse block.
      But I am no doctor and to be sure and safe I recommend you to ask a Doctor these questions.
      Best of success and enjoy diving in the future! :)

    I'll explain my case to you in case it helps someone else.
    I can make up for the difficulties we can all have out of the water. But once in the water he made up for it with great difficulty and he needed to do it again right away. I have discovered that my ear canal is narrow and that when I enter the water a little air bubble remains in each ear. when it compensated, that air is compressed but immediately had a need to compensate again.
    Now I know that as I enter the water I must turn my head so that the ear is pointing upwards and compensate, I notice how the bubble comes out, I change my ear pointing upwards and I compensate again. I no longer have a problem keeping my eardrum relaxed throughout the dive. Good blue

    I always did Valsalv manoeuvre during the pool training but when we were diving in lake I had soft rhinitis so it was harder to equalise. Experienced diver told me to try swallowing and it was the best choice I could make. 😆 Swallowing is 🔝
    Marcel amazing video!!!
    And what you said 10:26 ♡ I was so stressed about what is going to happen if I couldn't equalise during that dive but the same experienced diver also told me that he has also days when he simply cannot equalise and it's ok and it encouraged me very much. So thank you for saying it.

    I'm a greenhorn diver and most of the times I get blood in my mask (no pain). I can't wait to use your advices in Monterey, CA again. I don't want to join any dive groups in the area until I get better at equalizing my ears and get a better grip of my neutral buoyancy. I'd hate to ruin other's dive because of me. I'll keep practicing and hiring instructors until I get it right.

      Hi Jz, Getting blood in your mask is usually because of congestion in your sinuses. If this happens a lot, I recommend you to see a Nose, Ear and Throat specialist doctor. They can advice you.
      Also blowing your nose before and during the dive can help.

    I begin my open water course this month. My son will also be taking the course. Watching your videos is giving us a great head start on what to expect and prepare for. I’m pretty excited about the adventures ahead for us. We’re already planning our first few dives after certification. Of course, the most important thing for us, is being safe. Everything by the book. Always diving with a group, and buddying up for any adventures. I’m 40, and I don’t think I’ve been this excited about something, in a long time. Really looking forward to spending more time with my son, and making some great memories.

    I had "one of those days" today so I watched this video. I found on my 2nd dive that going down slowly but head first rather than feet first helped me equalize better. I'm going to try blowing my nose beforehand tomorrow as my instructor also recommended.

    • @MarcelVanDenBerg1
      @MarcelVanDenBerg1  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment Brent!
      Going doing head first is not always recommended for beginner divers, but I heard that a lot of people find it easier to equalize that way!
      So why not! Just make sure you do it in a controlled and slow manner.
      Blowing of your nose work fantastically, give it a try and let me know how it went on your next dive :)

      Well, I tried blowing my nose today but there was nothing to blow. I tried clearing my thought too. In the end I had zero trouble equalizing so either yesterday was a bad day, or it was the 45m depth - today was only ~25.

    • @MarcelVanDenBerg1

    4:28 I would call that... YAWNING. Even when I am on high altitude place like on a high mountain when the ear drum is intensely bent, I would use this method to get rid of air pushing the ear drum and it helps a little bit but u have to do redo over again.

I even have to take sinus meds before flying to equalize my ears and yawning is what works for me. I always get scared trying to equalize even on land because I feel my ears will burst if I hold my nose….every time I swallow normally my ears crackle… I wonder if that is equalizing but I’m thinking too much about it or trying too hard… ??🤷🏻‍♀️😭

      Hi Alyssa, that is perfectly normal as we are not supposed to equalise our ears on land. So hearing is crack when you swallow or wiggle your jaw on land is perfectly normal and a good sign, knowing that you can probably easily equalize underwater.
      Trying to pinch the nose and equalize on land cause extra pressure from the inside as your ears are already normal. Doing it slowly is ok to see if you can equalize, but you should never equalise on land to land or long.
      Even underwater we do it slowly, but especially on land it can cause problems when you do it too hard.
      In other words get the proper dive lessons and they will teach you how to equalize gently underwater and you will be fine 😌
      Have fun scuba diving!

    This video was top notch. You just took away all my fears regarding equalising (had some trouble in the pool today, but thanks to you i now know my technique was all wrong, also blowing my nose helped a ton right in this moment).
    If tommorow the longer and gentle approach works, imma be happy. And if not? Im gonna cancel the dive and be happy too! Maybe do a bit of drone flying.

    I did my first try dive a few weeks ago and even though I thought I equalised my ears, I ended up getting a mild form of ear barotrauma in my right ear (I only went 3 metres down). I realised afterwards, that my right ear is narrower than the other and won’t equalise just from pinching my nose. I was pretty worried I’d be unable to dive due to this but soon found that if I tilt my head so that my right ear is facing up towards the surface and then pinch my nose, it does equalise properly.

    I have trouble equalizing, takes me a bit longer than normal. But I can’t feel anything unless I’m in water. Also, blowing out my nose is all I really need to do once I equalize other ways at 20 feet or so. Another method I like is rubbing under your ears while swallowing.

    • @MarcelVanDenBerg1
      @MarcelVanDenBerg1  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Go Bucs,
      Yes rubbing under your ears while swallowing is also a great technique to use. We all have our favorite techniques.
      For some people equalising is a bit harder than others, but in the end most people will get down to enjoy diving.
      Take it slow and easy and enjoy :)

      Hello Marcel, thank you for replying my comment. The last practice I did was in 5 metres deep pool. At first I have trouble in equalizing, but later can handle it. But in last hour I did feel trouble, can't equalizing anymore, so I had to go up. I realized the water trapped inside my ears, not in the outside of eardrum. Maybe the water got inside while clearing mask. After the session, the trapped water hard to came out because my nose produce some mucus. What should I do in the future? Can I still continue with this condition? Much thanks Marcel 🙏

      @@anglinmaharani6302 Dear Anglin, I am not a doctor, but it seems that you tried to do this when you are congested. You can be congested even if you don't always feel it or when you are sick. When you have (a little bit) congestion it will (partially) block your sinuses and that will make it much harder to equalize. What probably happened is that you now have fluid behind your ear drum. First of all, stop trying and stay out of the water until you are fully healed. But what is important is that I am not a doctor, so my advice is to visit a doctor and let them do a check-up and give you the right advice and maybe some medication. Please keep me updated and it will work one day :)

      "my ears hurt even at 2.5m when diving into a pool"
      Equalize early and often. You can even "pre-equalize" on the surface before you start down, by using the Valsalva nose-pinch method.

      Yes, that does work wonders, but be careful as Nose Spray can be addictive and it can hurt your sinuses when taking it to much and often. Aways consult with your physician before diving if you can use the nose spray 🤙

    Thank you, I will try blowing my nose right before the dive. Several times in just the first 10 feet, one of my ears has trouble equalizing. I'm an experienced diver and am concerned that if I go on a dive with a stronger current and can't descend fast enough, I'll miss the target site.

    • @MarcelVanDenBerg1
      @MarcelVanDenBerg1  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, blowing your nose before the decent really helps! You can also ask a doctor for advice if you always have a constant problem. Best of success and enjoy the dive!

      Yes, I used to have trouble clearing my ears, until a very experienced drive buddy suggested I "practice" equalizing in my car, while driving to the dive site. That ends up pushing the eardrum outwards a tiny bit, and obviously it springs right back. However, it seems to progressively clear any congestion, and might actually expand the eustachian tubes a tiny bit. I have adopted that technique and no more problems. As you say: equalize gently, and often, and BEFORE you have significant pressure on the eardrums. Thx for the video.
