  • Underwater Slates & Other Writing Devices... It's quick tips time! Slates, Wetnotes and even digital writing slates are all options for recording analog data during a dive or as an additional communication tool when hand signals just aren't cutting it.
    In this Quick Tips videos, I'm going over the pro's and con's of four different types of underwater writing tool.
    If you're:
    An underwater photographer who needs to carry a shot list on a dive...
    A wreck diver who wants to chart a wreck site...
    A Dive Master candidate doing their mapping exercise...
    A tech diver who needs to carry contingency decompression plans...
    ...then this video is for you!
    As always, thanks for watching!
    D.S.D.O,
    James

    There should be a PADI cert for WRITING on slates underwater. None of my buddies can ever write anything legible 😂 thank ya for the video, as always!

    I think at on time we ALL had one of those Citizen watches and for the exact reasons you stated. I remember getting on boats to do dives off South Carolina and North Carolina back in the day and you could immediately tell all the experienced tech divers because they ALL had one on their wrist.

    I also like the waterproof notebook option it just seems to work for whatever dive you are doing. And if not needed it’s compact enough to stay in pocket and out of the way. I’m really interested in seeing how the electronic slate works can’t wait for that video. As always great video James and hope to see you back in the water soon.

    Hi James,
    Glad Duslate got the slate to you.
    I’ve got mine too. I’m doing a written review for them as well, but currently can’t get it wet due to lockdown.
    If you put the lanyard on the stylus it comes out easier.
    I hope you can too as I’m interested in your thought on it.
    I can see myself using it on open water courses most when students aren’t yet understanding all signals. And for tic tac toe on deco stops.

    Thanks James. The only time I use wrist slates is for carrying dive plan with run times and deco stops so if there is a question during dive it is there, Have a great day. Hoping to hear news on your ear soon.

    Hi James. I used the DR wet notes and inserts for a long time but got finally replaced the inserts with a product from another supplier. The new notes allow me to insert new pages between existing pages which is great because I keep all my lesson plans with me, dive plans and profiles, (all in permanent marker) and it allows me to update info as required. And after all that I still have enough blank pages to use for notes during individual dives, and can add more if required but haven't run out of blank pages on a dive yet.

    Great timing, I was actually going to run by the dive shop after work to grab a slate after the recommendation of my instructor, for our AOW trip this weekend. I was going for the wrist slate. Your face made me rethink that, lol

      They also lack the versatility of others, Try and show anybody else anything on it. Good luck reading upside down and at an angle.

      @@toriless good to know. I've got an old smaller clip-on style slate. I was hoping to get away from the clip style since I dive a BPW now and don't have pockets. Trying to keep from looking like a Christmas tree.

    Dive guides at Lembeh Strait had an erasable slate that was cool. Bit like an etch-a-sketch. Easy to read and erases with a button. I think it was the Innovative Scuba Concepts Quest Underwater Erasable Slate.

    Wetnotes is absolutely the most useful. If you have energy&skills enough you can produce your own pages using laser printer and waterproof paper (earlier a product called Xeroperm but have some other name today). Then you need a binding machine and, voila, you have a boklet with your own content, like check lists, deco tables, maps ... and of course some blank pages. Handy!

    Hey James! Hope you're healing well! Talking about new tech, diving community has a new bell or whistle ;) , the Oceans S1 allows you to ping your buddy, my Scuba instructors did not find it appealling, they dive DIR. I don't know if this feature will fall under gimmiky gadget and be forgotten, OR, in 3 years time a "ping'able" Dive computer will be a requirement for group diving. what do you think?

    GUE requires wet notes. I'm not sure how you would replace them though.
    GUE also doesn't allow dive computers.

    I’m a newbie diver (11 dives) and I’m trying to dive as often as possible without... um... spending a million dollars (diving is very expensive here in SoCal). Do you have any tips for getting more dive experience without totally breaking the bank?

    I often cover my slate with painters tape and write my deco plans with a permanent sharpie. Is pencil the only option for note taking underwater? It’s sometimes difficulty to read. #askdiversready

      ...or a backlight. Maybe that is what the button does when not using the stylus once underwater. I suspect you need the stylus to avoid accident erasures but I could also serve to turn in lighting.

    I was wondering about pregnancy and diving?. Is it Safe is it bad!.. Does the foster take damage of high pressur?
    The onley Thing i can think of is perhaps a longer deco stop since there is foster inside

    Those little pencils suck. If you are going to be doing a ton of writing, like doing various surveys and mapping dives get a Pilot Lead Holder Croquis 6B. They are like $6 on Amazon, and the lead is available on Jet Pens. They are all plastic so they survive underwater well, even in salt water. But they give you a pretty decent writing tool.

    • @toriless
      @toriless 3 роки тому

      Sounds like a mechanical pencil. I assume that one also had a wider graphite as well so it can leave a thicker line.

    • @Teampegleg
      @Teampegleg 3 роки тому

      @@toriless It is a simple one called a lead holder. Yes the line is a bit thicker, but it is much easier to read than the golf pencils that comes with most slates.

    • @d_fresh1169
      @d_fresh1169 3 роки тому

      Yes!! I love the Croquis with my wet notes. You can pop the back 'cap' off and pass a bungee though to secure to the notes. And, best of all, no metal to rust

    • @Yggdrasil42
      @Yggdrasil42 2 роки тому

      Yep! Got one too. Thicker line and easier to hold with gloves. Not wood so it doesn't rot over time.

    they need a thumb scroll roller on the side (for the digital pad) for scrolling up and down, that way you can make way more notes, oh and that stylist will be gone in a second LoL its hard enough to look after my one for my Samsung Tablet

    • @jelteklaswijnja4055
      @jelteklaswijnja4055 3 роки тому

      It's not actually digital in the way that it has a screen with pixels. It's basically just the one pixel.

    • @dannyholden5361
      @dannyholden5361 3 роки тому

      The stylus does have a lanyard, he hasn’t put it on yet.
      A scroll would be good for future versions but it is a new product based in Russia. They are trying to break into Europe and North America.
      I got sent one and do like it. Looking forward to using it in water.

      I bought a bunch of extra ones when I was using a palm organizer, eons ago. Not sure how much Samsung Stylus cost but probably a LOT more. One reason I am in no hurry to use one.
