I saw Robert Hazard and the Heroes in 1982 at the Fast Lane in Asbury Park. The band was tight, the crowd went nuts, but he did not do this song. By then, he had given it to Cyndi.
I got to know Robert in the last year of his life when he was performing material from his final 3 albums of Americana songs. He had a way of crafting word pictures so well. Twice I had the pleasure of seeing/hearing him perform acoustic versions of "Girls" which was more his old style & pace than Cyndi's version. The second time he was accompanied by Lloyd Maines (Austin City Limits legend and Natalie's father) and the Phiily area's favorite drummer, everybody's friend, Tommy Geddes.
    I will never forget it.
Robert was very kind to me, my family, and everyone who listened to his music, and he was a devoted husband and father. His early passing was tough. We miss him dearly.

For the unaware.... Robert never released this version as it was only a demo. Robert knew that the song was quite right for him.
So, he waited for the right singer to come along to allow them to record and release it... first..
That singer was of course Cindi Lauper. Robert and Cindi got together and made the very simple gender change.
It was one of the best financial decision that he ever made as until he died, he got nice royalty checks from that song, mainly because of of the world wide popularity of Cindi's version.

Alan Merrill did the same thing for I Love Rock n Roll. He never sold ownership of the song and got a pretty penny for the rest of his life for it.

Robert and Cyndi didn’t see eye to eye actually. She tried to say she made the song what it was and deserved all the money. Robert said Cyndi can have all the song but she can’t have all the money.
He said it took him 15 minutes to write in his bathtub. Robert write plenty of songs funny how this was the one that made him rich.

Actually I believe the real story is that Cindi wanted Robert to give her ownership of the song but Robert wisely flatly refused to to do that
Until the day Robert died he got royalty checks for Cyndi's recording of his song

The original is Cyndi's, as she changed the lyrics and gave directions for the changes that should be made to the instrumental (according to the producers themselves). It would be a cover if she had used the same lyrics but not necessarily the same instrumental.

@@anthonyfederico5147 Lyrically, it was just gender swapped, which requires zero effort, and despite all the bells and whistles, the rhythm is still the same, so no, it wasn't "basically re-written", as it's essentially the same song, hence why it is considered a cover, and why Robert Hazard had writing credits on the track. Also, it's unfair to compare a demo to a fully produced song with "a world-class producer". It's clear you haven't listened to many demos, as they're all rough like this one.

      @GreenLegendRan Рік тому +1

@@archeopia23Songs don't need to have exactly the same music to be a cover. It's a genre change from punk to pop, and that's no less a cover than all of the people who turn pop songs into heavy metal songs, with equally large changes. The majority of the lyrics are the same, too.

  • @jadeodowd809

I saw Robert Hazard and the Heroes perform this song in concert many times. It was always part of their set and often an encore as it was a crowd pleaser!! The “girls” in in audience loved it! I can tell you it was so much better in a live concert performance than this recording. When I heard Cindi Lauper was covering it I thought she would ruin it but she made it so upbeat and poppy it just worked somehow. She made it her own.

    🎉
Don't know who if anyone will care,...
I feel inspired to share this story.
Bobby wrote this implicitly for me; because I asked him to.
He was my very first boyfriend in 1964. My bother had dated his sister.
    We always remained good friends.
Sometime ago we ran into each other at a bar on Woodland Ave.
There was a guitar 🎸 showdown that night.
Of course he was competing against a guy who had treated me bad and broken my heart
    😂
Bobby won, and we took off to 🎉 together.
This is when I asked him to write a song for me...
    Ey...voila

There is a demo of Cyndi performing the song with the original arrangement - the same one here. I’m so glad that she took it and made her own brilliant arrangement.
Don’t get me wrong, I really like the original but that grunge/punk rock arrangement just didn’t work for Cyndi’s voice. I’m so glad she took the song, tore it apart and then put it back together in a way that completely suits her!
Cyndi’s version is practically an anthem now for women and even survivors) men that suffered too.
Again, no disrespect intended towards Robert Hazar at all.

Because this “version” was a demo. It wasn’t released. And it isn’t as good, either.

@@GHOSTbirdnatureLOVER Oh sure it is. Even a demo recording can be released on CDs and/or iTunes/Spotify/Deezer. Plus, I think this demo recording sounds much better.

It's hilarious that the original is written from a guy's point of view. By the way the world embraced the female nature of the anthem, you would never have known it was from a guy's defense of his actions. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

In all honesty, the way it was done and this version and the vibe I get from this version, this could be a female trans song.

The song was basically an idea created by Robert, and re-written and developed by Cyndi Lauper and done with a world-class producer. The original song, performed by Robert Hazzard, was garbage.
