I saw Robert Hazard and the Heroes in 1982 at the Fast Lane in Asbury Park. The band was tight, the crowd went nuts, but he did not do this song. By then, he had given it to Cyndi. I got to know Robert in the last year of his life when he was performing material from his final 3 albums of Americana songs. He had a way of crafting word pictures so well. Twice I had the pleasure of seeing/hearing him perform acoustic versions of "Girls" which was more his old style & pace than Cyndi's version. The second time he was accompanied by Lloyd Maines (Austin City Limits legend and Natalie's father) and the Phiily area's favorite drummer, everybody's friend, Tommy Geddes. I will never forget it. Robert was very kind to me, my family, and everyone who listened to his music, and he was a devoted husband and father. His early passing was tough. We miss him dearly.
For the unaware.... Robert never released this version as it was only a demo. Robert knew that the song was quite right for him. So, he waited for the right singer to come along to allow them to record and release it... first.. That singer was of course Cindi Lauper. Robert and Cindi got together and made the very simple gender change. It was one of the best financial decision that he ever made as until he died, he got nice royalty checks from that song, mainly because of of the world wide popularity of Cindi's version.
Robert and Cyndi didn’t see eye to eye actually. She tried to say she made the song what it was and deserved all the money. Robert said Cyndi can have all the song but she can’t have all the money. He said it took him 15 minutes to write in his bathtub. Robert write plenty of songs funny how this was the one that made him rich.

I can tell you it was so much better in a live concert performance than this recording.
