Moonman Q1 - Mini Eyedropper Fountain Pen - First Impressions!

- In this video - I take you along as I look at and ink up my new Moonman Q1 mini eyedropper fountain pen I ordered on e-bay from China. This is a unique little pocket pen. I show you how it compares to my other pocket pens. This little pen weighs almost 3 times what the Moonman Mini (Wancai) weighs and this one has a clip, and an equally huge 3 ml ink capacity!
My first impressions of this pen are great because of the smooth nib and the look of the pen. I am a bit concerned about the threads inside the cap -- that they may become stained. (this won't be an issue on the other colors but it does have the likely potential of affecting the clear demonstrator). But I will let you know how it goes as time goes along!
One awesome distinguishing feature is a #6 nib. This has a very smooth #6 fine nib that write very nicely -- no micro-mesh needed.
Here are a few measurements:
Weight in grams inked with 3 ml ink: 38.7 g
Grip Diameter: 14.2 mm approx.
Weight in grams un-inked approx: 36.2
Length capped: 110 mm/4.5 inches approx.
Length uncapped: 98 mm/3.75 inches approx.
You won't want to miss chrisrap52's amazing (as always) full review on this pen - I learned so much from it -- here's the link:

Hi friends! I had a lot of questions about the weight of this pen uncapped -- and unfortunately I didn't think of that prior to inking but fully inked with 3 mls of ink it weighs 21.6 grams. I hope this will help. For reference, a fully inked Moonman Mini Wancia with 3 mls of ink weighs 14.1 grams posted - which is how I write with that pen. :)
Thanks, Chris! Fun review for a fun pen.
3 mL of ink should weigh close to 3 grams, so the uncapped pen should be around 18.6 grams. I am sure that is close enough for most of us fountain pen groupies.
I saw a Chrisrap52 pen review on it and he states that the pen, with ink weighs in grams: 39 with ink, 36 without ink, 22 uncapped and that the cap itself weighs 17 grams.
Imagine pulling that out in a meeting, lol! I like it
Hi Mackenzie - it's definitely unique!
Ha! that’d be epic. “Err yeh hang on boss, I just need to make a few notes….” 😂
LOL ima go back to office soon. i just may
On a date you are already winner lol
Great review Chris! I wanted to get one of these but I'm still on my 30 day challenge--so I get to vicariously experience it thru you! I laughed so hard on your "before I end up with a purple bath" quote! (also, nice ring--matches your choice of ink!)
Hi Alesa -- by the time you get one if you do the price may be lower - that seems to happen with these pens. :) I felt I was all thumbs and I totally didn't get it at first about the threads being in the middle of the cap ... most of the caps seem to have threads closer to the end. But I see how they designed it now. I'm sure mine will spend it's life purple. LOL
This pen is so beautiful! Thank you for this review
Hi ju gudino -- you are very welcome! It writes so smooth too .. I am still impressed with this pen.
Thank you for sharing this “raw” first impressions video. I’m like you when I’m filling a pen…no matter how hard I try to not spill the ink, I’ll manage to make some sort of mess. 😂 You are a wealth of knowledge with inks. I’ve learned so much from your ink reviews. And, I’ve really missed your pen reviews. 💕
Hi Theresa -- I do get messy!!!! LOL I hardly dare attempt anything without an apron on!!!! :)
@@ChrisSaenz13 same here 🤪
that's really an interesting pen! Glad watching you doing it live and getting the feedback as it's happening!
Hi Vicky -- it was fun -- after I realized I should not have dipped that nib/section quite so far ... I caused those threads to get all inky!!!!
Omg I just ordered this pen today!! Super excited to get mine!
Hi J.Lynn -- cool ... they are fun pens! It is bigger than I expected yet I had looked at measurements so I knew it would be almost 4.5 inches. :)
OMG! That’s probably the biggest cap I’ve ever seen. Cute big/little pen. Glad it’s a smooth writer. I love it when the nib is great right out of the box!
Hi lju5001 -- YES me too on the smooth nibs! I will enjoy writing with this all of June and come back to report after. :)
What an interesting pen! I determine the number of turns it takes to get the cap off by holding the barrel tight and counting how many turns the clip goes around as I turn the cap. Thanks for posting!
Thank you Nomad -- I was feeling fairly clueless trying to count the turns. It didn't seem too bad. Some pens have 3 full turns and those do really annoy me!
Hard to resist such a cute pen.
Hi Ichiro - I tried to resist and wait until a more experienced reviewer came and talked some sense into me/us ... but I just couldn't wait any longer. LOL
I've been looking for a review of this pen. I saw it yesterday with no reviews online for it. Thank you for buying it.
Hi Ravenlisa86 -- I usually wait for chrisrap52 to buy and review this kind of pen first but this one was irresistible. I see now he plans to review it in June and I can't wait to see what else I can learn about it from his review. :) I think it's going to be a great pen! It sure writes smooth and holds plenty of ink.
Looks like a giant bumble bee escaped from the SciFi channel. Appreciate the look, an attention getter for sure, and it
writes well! Thanks!
Hi David!!! LOL
I was looking for a review on this pen the other day! It is so adorable and chubby. Very eye catching.
Hi Liv - I was looking everywhere for any kind of review or blog post on it. I think soon many people will have reviews out - chrisrap52 is planning for June he just did a video I saw showing his pens he will review next. I had tried to wait for a review from him before spending for this one but I got over eager to get one. LOL
Saw this pen on an IG post and just thought it was so cute I had to find out more about it! Thanks for this video. :)
Hi Leah you're very welcome!
I got two, clear & brown. Was doing my review when I saw yours. Based on your mention, I removed cap finial & clip. I had not planned to. I also like the pen. Inked the clear one. My writing experience slightly different, maybe due to different ink & paper. Always enjoy your explorations of pens. Stay safe & healthy.
Hi Chris -- your ears must have been ringing. I kept checking to see if you'd done a review on this pen prior to me purchasing one ... but then I gave in and got one even not knowing anything about it. I always learn so much from your videos and I don't normally buy a Chinese pen without seeing what you thought of it FIRST!!!!!! This one is sure fun!!!! Ah so the finial and clip did come off ... I was afraid I'd break it if it wasn't meant to come off. :)
Hi Chris! Fun pen!
Thanks for your video! I can't wait to find out how you feel about it as you use it!
Hi Judy -- yes it is making me curious as to how it will do throughout June. I have a small zippered (originally a make up bag about 6 cm high) to put it in to keep it safe from my cats. LOL Until I can see if Rickshaw can make a custom sleeve ... I'm pretty sure they can.
It looks sharp! It reminds me of a Tombow Zoom 828fp.
Hi damutoob lol that's an interesting handle. I hadn't know about the Tombow Zoom "egg" until reading everyone's comments here. Interesting!!!!
Interesting video of a unique pen.
Thanks Steve!
I've been really interested in trying this for a while, but the gold accenting just doesn't match my ascetics. I really wish it came with silver hardware. And I hear you with the demonstrator choice, if a pen comes in a demonstrator option that's the one I get. It's such a joy seeing the ink swirl around and seeing the mechanics of the pen and how it flows, it seems a shame to cover that up. It's such a fun part of the fountain pen experience for me.
Hi Inazarab -- would you believe this pen is still inked from my initial purchase and still writing with absolutely no issues ... ink is Monteverde Purple Reign. It's an odd size and needs it's own little pouch lol but is quite amazing. Yes a silver trim option would be really great right!!!!
This pen is really great it's so handy for me ... Very smooth to writing and extra fine nib was lit ,🔥
Right! I find my pen never dries out either -- it has been inked for 5+ months and still going with no skips or anything! Monteverde ink but still that's amazing!!!!
Very cool! 😎 👍
nice review! ive been looking for one about the demonstrator.. i believe its hunky like that to help people with arthritis so they don't need to move as much and im contemplating about getting one for my dad...
Hi Daniella. I luckily don't have arthritis in my hands just my back, hips and shoulders ... ugh ... but I am going to evaluate this pen up against my other Moonman Mini which has such a comfortable slightly smaller grip section. I have them both on my desk so I can make sure and write with both a lot this month. (June). I'm not sure yet if this Q1 is going to be a comfy grip. It doesn't post securely and even for my small hand I wonder if I'm going to like writing with it as much as I like the screw to post Moonman Wancia Mini. I'll be coming back to talk about it mid-month.
It's a pretty new pen from them, I'm happy its possible to get the tombow egg shape without having to fork over the money to get a used tombow egg fountain pen
Hi Charles -- I had never heard of the Tombow Egg until comments here about it led me to look it up. They must be very scarce now. I'm glad this alternative came along.
I love demonstrator pens!! My favorite is my jinhao shark clear one, cheap and useful, hope to built up a collection.
Hi Scarlet -- ooooh a clear shark .... ! I don't think I've seen one of those yet. :)
@@ChrisSaenz13 got it from Aliexpress, took a while to arrive but I love it and i even brought the twelve pack which are all different colors, my ink collection isn't big enough to color match them all yet!
I got the Brown one last week.
Definitely a homage to the Tombow Zoom Egg .
I also have the Clear incoming.
My EF nib was not as good as yours.
Even with micromeshing, opening up the feed channels and spreading the tines.
I ended up swapping to a WingSung #6 M nib, that flows and matches the thickness better.
This is a great little pen, the hand feel and balance is surprisingly superb for what it is.
Hi Vagelis - I did get a Fine nib. I was afraid to try the EF. But, it's so nice that they are #6 nibs because that increases the versatility so much!!!!! I envy you the brown one - I've thought about getting another but there are so many things competing for my pen/ink $.
Oooh that is a really nice colour of trim on that demonstrator!
A (late) tip for determining the number of rotations it takes to remove the cap: Rotate the cap itself, using the clip as a reference point for how many turns it takes.
Thank you Angel -- I'm thinking I just have such a hard time calculating the number of turns it's almost funny. But that helps. :)
It’s so cute! I think I may need one too. 😆
Hi Clare -- It's a fun pen! I plan to write with it all of June and come back to report how everything goes.
That's one fat pocket pen! I'm a sucker for pocket pens, too. Thanks for an interesting video.
Hi Barbara - yes and the grip section I will have to write with it a lot to see if it's comfortable enough - it seems too wide for me but if it's just jotting things on lists it will be A okay.
That’s one large pen 😮 Like the look of it though. 3ml of ink is a superb fill up. Thx Chris 🙂👍🏻
Hi Richard -- it's a short but fat pen for sure! It looks like they built a rounded body over and around a regular Moonman Mini Wancia ... if that makes sense. :)
This looks like an homage to the Tombow Zoom Egg pen!
These fat pens weren't actually made for people with arthritis initially, that's a myth, but as someone with autoimmune arthritis issues I find my Tombow Zoom Egg to be my most comfortable everyday writer because of how fat the grip section is, and it being short works well for my small-ish hands. It definitely does take some getting used to at first though! The Eggs can be hard to find nowadays so I'm really looking forward to this as a cheap and readily available alternative, can't wait to try it out!
Hi mummerfied -- oh wow until you mentioned it I'd never heard of the Tombow Egg -- I looked it up and it does look like they must be hard to find. :)
I own two of these in fine point, ordered from Amazon. I'm a guy with average hands and find that, of course, I have to post them but the capacity is amazing, I keep one filled with Baystate Blue as a dedicated thing. They write as smoothly as any fp's I've owned over 50 years of use. Amazed at the value here...
Hi LoveIsAll -- these pens are truly remarkable -- absolutely don't dry up at least with the Monteverde Purple Reign I have in mine and it starts everytime with no hesitation!!! :) I can't say that about all my fountain pens!!!!
Sweet pen, looks like the same height as the eye dropper it came with. 😄 Cool review as always!
Hi Gristle - it looks like this pen body could be a case holder for a Moonman Mini Wancai. LOL You can almost see the inner shape of the other pen. It's weird.
@@ChrisSaenz13 They actually have smaller pens? Wow! I love watching your videos, Ms. Chris. You have brought a lot of color to my world, Thank you.
Check out OdE's video "Platinum from Brazil" posted one month ago. There you will see the vintage Platinum and newer Towbow that this design is probably ripping off to some extent...although those other pens have differently shaped nibs. Fun video to watch.
Hi Marilyn -- oh I love OdE's videos I'll definitely look for that one! Thank you!
Well in term of design , color variations , and other variations related to fountain pens everything has been done already, and what Moonman it's doing everyone else does, and that it's called design recycling . :)
I am so glad you are reviewing this, I have been curious because I
ordered one and it is on it's way!
Hi Ingrid - I kept looking for reviews and didn't find any so I ended up ordering one. :)
Having the threads up there by the nib with an inner cap seal might be to help prevent ink from drying out when it's capped, not just for a decoration design. Let us know if it works out!
Hi egglorru -- I'll definitely write with this pen all of June and come back with a report after. I think if I just don't dip the nib/feed so far next time I'll avoid the trouble of inking the threads.
I received mine last week but haven’t opened it yet.
Hi chris, I dont know if you already know this, but moonman has another mini fountain pen, called the mini 80! There's a few videos on youtube on it, and it's also relatively cheap! Under $10 on aliexpress. Love your videos!
Hi pelvic rock - I'll have to look that one up. Thank you for mentioning it!
@@ChrisSaenz13 Didn't you upload your review of that in May of 2018? Or is that another Moonman Mini and not the Mini 80? (The one in the Altoids tin.)
Lady, I came here for a review, but I LOVED your style xD
Hi @viniciovp4ever thank you. :) The pen never dried ... I had it inked for 6+ months and it wrote first time everytime with the Monteverde Purple Reign ... if it fit better into a pen case I'd be writing with it all the time. I didn't even have to work on the nib. I still think it's a great pen! An odd fat shape but it writes smooth and is sure reliable.
@@ChrisSaenz13 I think that's why it is cool, a chubby little pen xD it us funny, we are too serous theese days! Just bought mine, unfortunately, here I go in a 3 week waiting from China shipping lol
Just bought one from Amazon. I was unable to unscrew the nib housing so didn't have the leaking you experienced. Mine has an EF nib. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly it performed when filled with Jacques Herbin Vert Amazone. My expectations were very low, being a mass produced $23 pen from China. The nib is in fact much smoother than the nibs on my Conklin Duragraph LE or Monteverde Ritma. And like you, I find it fun to see the ink sloshing around in the pen....cuteness factor 10+. Is it still performing well for you?
Hi Lauren --- yes --- mine is still writing great and the nib is super smooth no micromesh required. It's great!
"I don't have that kind of patience on a good day". - Chris Saenz. 💜🖋💜
Agreed.
Hi Star Gazer lol -- I may have to learn patience in order not to have those threads all inky. LOL But generally I just want to write immediately and can't wait for ink to take it's sweet time to work down to the nib. :)
How do you keep eye dropper pens from “burping” ink on to the paper? Also, how do you like the Liliput? It looks like it would be hard to write with because it’s so smooth.
Hi planner -- I have had trouble only with Noodler's eye dropper pens for far in terms of burping. The Moonman ones have yet to cause me trouble. So, I'm not sure. I have heard that keeping more than half a fill could help. But I write my little Moonman pens dry and they never burp. :)
I highly recommend the Lilliput. I'm a big handed guy and still love mine. Chris is correct on the burping. More air in body means more pressure can build from the warmth of your hand.
Burping is caused by the air expanding in the barrel. So you need to keep them full as possible to minimise the air.
I want the green version but I'm having a difficult time finding it in stock 😶 And it wouldn't be a Chris pen if it wasn't stained purple at some point 😁
Hi Book Dreamer - I saw the green one was going like hot cakes. I like the brown one. But eeeks. I'm trying not to spend for anymore pens until birthday/Christmas. :)
Now that's a thick grip section!
Otherwise, it looks like a pen for super small hands if the cap cannot be posted without scratching the acrylic.
Personally need the barrel to rest on my hand as I write to avoid excessive scrunching. ^^*
It's definitely unique though. :)
Hi Namope -- I wonder if I was just being too chicken to post it. I hate to cause scratches and I'm just not sure if it's a good idea. But yes, I'd think un-posted you've have to have medium to small hands. It worked for me but barely.
Great first impressions video for this littler chonker Q1. May I ask where you got your cute hugging cat sample vial holder from?
Hi spiffylilz -- the little cat ink sample vial came from pen friend Cassandra - and I think she got them at the 99 cent store. We don't have one in my part of Texas. I glued a little piece of cardboard onto the bottom of it and I can't remember what they are sold for ... but there are many designs I've seen online in other people's videos.
Hello Chris,
Thank you very much for your review.
The fountain pen does not seem to be tight.
The ink is seeping through the threads, around the nib....
Amazing that you and the people don't mind...:)
Please write if this is a permanent quirk please....
Kind regards from Vienna
Michel
Hi Michel -- I dunked the nib in the ink sample so it got the threads that hold the cap on all inky but other than that I'd had no inks and have had it inked up since the day I got it and it's writing great ... not leaving my fingers inky.
@@ChrisSaenz13 Thank you Chris for your answer ! It's very kind if you. I have now ordered two pieces.
I'll get the two in two months ... :( I'm still happy ... :)
Kind regards
Michael
Hi thanks for sharing your video
I purchased the clear fountain pen from eBay as well ..... my question is does this particular pen take the ink cartridges .... honestly I don’t want to buy the ink in a bottle in fear of spilling it lol
Hi The IT dee -- no this pen won't take cartridges but the other smaller Moonman Mini Wancia - this one in the video I'm going to link here does take cartridges: ua-cam.com/video/6j-SEd0qKfM/v-deo.html
Ok thanks
What an intriguing pen! It's odd but for some reason, I like that. Would this be good for people with arthritis because of the girth I'm wondering?
Oh, a tell you what is useful for ink in difficult places baby wipes.
Pain-free wishes Chris. :-)
Hi Matthew -- oh great idea -- I have some baby wipes in my hurricane supplies too!!! Thank you Matthew -- I hope you are pain free too!!!! I'm wrestling with my left shoulder some but really working to keep flexible and keep it from acting up!!!!
@@ChrisSaenz13 Sorry to hear your shoulder is giving you some problems I hope it clears up soon.
I have always had baby wipes in my pen kit essential.
In one of your videos you said a broad was writing as a fine one thing you can do in that situation is increase the gap in the tines slightly this will increase the width and flow, all you need is a 0.0020mm brass shim to widen the gap and a 0.0010 mm too floss the slit, alternatively, you can press the nib against your nail until it opens up, it all sounds scary but try it on a pen you never use first, then you'll get some confidence that's how I learned
Oh my goodness, where did you get that cat sample tube holder from? Love it! Also thanks for making such a thorough video!
Hi arachnoid169 -- the little cat holder came from Daiso Japanese Dollar store in North Texas I think .... it was a gift from pen friend Cassandra. We don't have one of those stores down here in South Texas but friends around the US have found the little cats at Daiso stores all over. I wonder if they have a website ... I'm not sure.
@@ChrisSaenz13 awesome thanks for the info! There’s a Daiso about 20 minutes away from me! Gotta make sure to look around for this cute holder the next time I make a trip out there!
The section on that pen must come in quite a bit to be comfortable to hold?
Hi Andrew - I'll be writing with it all of June to see how it does ... the part of the section I grip is 14 mm and seems pretty wide. So I'm interested to see if I can write more than just note/list jotting with it. Remains to be seen!!!!
This is definitely a pen that you'd want to prime the feed with a syringe instead of dipping. Never seen threads on the end of the grip section like that.
Unscrewing the section pen nib down( ever so cautiosly of course) just a quarter of a turn or so, and retightening works oftentimes for me.
Hi WaterMarbler - I wish I had been more careful in dipping the nib/feed. It was actually AFTER I did dip it that I noticed those threads .... I've never seen anything like it!
Hmm, you need large pockets for this pen but not deep ones 8-)
Apparently the chinese companies use the same shipping method as here in Germany. All orders are put into a cargo container and flown to the destination. There customs, taxes etc. are handled for the bulk and then the items are relabeled and put into the local mail.
It seems to save some money and the customer won't need to pick it up at customs.
Here in Germany if an item has been cleared by customs individually, there is a small green sticker (either "excempt from customs" or "processed by customs") on the package. I can see the sticker on PenBBS orders but not on items bought by chinese retailers.
Hi Stephan - it's new to have the Chinese pen arrive from California but I was ever so happy it took only 2 weeks and not longer! :)
Tissue paper and your thumb nail. Put the tissue over your nail, and then run your nail along the grooves of the threads and rotating the pen slowly. Do this 3 times while applying pressure straight down, upwards and downwards to make sure all angles of the thread is covered. Ink can be very stubborn!
Hi Christine - ah this is a good tip thank you!!!!!
Can we use catrage on it?.. and it's worth for 30 dollars? Plz reply soon because I ordered and I'm waiting for that .. it's cost 30 dollars
Hi Aravind -- I have been very happy with mine!!!! The nib is super smooth and it NEVER and I repeat NEVER dries out ... which I can't say that about very many of my pens. I think I had paid $24 but it is worth $30 to me. The grip section is on the thick side but comfortable for me. Some people don't like these pens because of the size -- they are FAT basically but top quality in terms of the nib and the fact they don't dry out. I have had Monteverde Purple Reign in mine for 5+ months. It has a big ink capacity ... I am sorry but I don't know if it takes cartridges ... I believe it's 100% eyedropper ... I had great luck .... NO leaks at all it tightens very nicely. I hope this helps!
@@ChrisSaenz13 wow mam thanks for you fast reply thanks a lot you're great it's really helpful for me.. now I'm clear about moonman q1 day after tomorrow I'll got for you sure.. because of ur review ❤️ and this reply too
What's different about that pen than any other pocket pen?
Hi dbeezy -- it's an eyedropper pen ... and oversized width wise ... it never dries out that I've seen so far. I'm sure it's not for everyone though because it's not going to fit in standard pen sleeves and cases.
McKenzie remarks make me laugh....maybe lots of attention n may change from hate to love..🙄🤠thanks Great Pen
Hi Ho Keat seng. This pen is quite a conversation piece to say the least. LOL
Tq for liking ......no comment actually🌏
Hi! Could I get the weight of the pen without the cap?
Hi Miguel -- mine is full of ink now so it will include 3 ml of ink but here's what I got: 21.6 grams - like I said - full of ink. :)
@@ChrisSaenz13 excellent! Thank you so much for the info 😁❤️
that looks like quite the behemoth
Hi acrophobe -- it really is -- no wider pens are in my collection -- I'm having to keep it in a narrow makeup zip pouch til I get a sleeve fitted for it. :)
The sexiest pen l had ever seen in my life
Ha ha!
Does this pen. Suffer from ink burping?
Hi Rahul -- mine has not. In fact, it has been inked a LONG time without drying out too ... simply incredible!!!!
@@ChrisSaenz13 That's great. I have already ordered mine!!
To bow makes a large barrel pen. It is supposed to be helpful for people with arthritis in the hand. Easier to hold
Hi nr3rful - I was watching OdE's video about the Tombow Zoom egg - that is a cool little pen!
first komment! :)
I got rid of mine because it was to big for my hand and it was hard to hold and it made my hand hurt when holding it
I like the pen it just to big for me I like it because it's a mini size
Hi Claude - I find the grip to be pretty big too and I greatly prefer my original Wancia Moonman Mini fountain pens. I'll be updating my opinions when I do a full review. :)
That's one fat girthy little pen! Never seen anything like this haha is it heavy?

@@herrkeks8509 thanks! Was hoping to see the weight of the pen without the cap.
@@Kamdorian That would have been nice. :) I often don’t care how heavy a pen is with the cap, because I usually don’t post them anyways. :)
@@herrkeks8509 same here, I usually don't post. I am guessing the weight of the pen without the cap is around 25-30grams so pretty heavy.
@@Kamdorian …probably. It indeed wouldn’t be light, especially for such a small plastic pen.
shoulda just waited, and had patience... (also the girth helps people with arthritis to write easier without pain, it is better for your hand :) )
No regrets on this pen -- it's still inked and going without issues since the day it arrived. :) I do like the looks of the smaller original Moonman Mini better but this is a very good pen too.
@@ChrisSaenz13 yeah i really love it. I dont have silicone but its a good pen
Your ink syringe matches with the pen. Lol
Fun chonky looking pen. I wonder if they based them off the old Japanese ones. I think the original idea was to provide a substantial grip surface for older folks with arthritic hands.
Hi Script Keeper -- I hadn't heard of the Tombow Zoom one until people commented on this video -- so I went and watched a video about that pen and they do SEEM to look a lot alike even the clip. The nib on this Moonman however is a regular #6 which has some advantages I think. Wish I had one of the old Zoom/eggs to compare it to. :)
I think that is for people with arthritis.
This is a meme of a fountain pen. Totally cartoony proportions.
LOL hi dpanch_89 -- yes it is. You should have seen my husband when he saw it. And he said -- you don't have a pen case that will fit in do you?
