The Traveler's Brass pen has been in my jeans pocket almost every day for two years now. Recently I had to take it out while on a trip, when I came back I couldn't find it, panicked a little, and ordered a new one. A few days later I found it safe and sound in a different pocket, and then the new one turned up. I guess I'll keep it as a backup.
Looking at your collection they're all very pretty, but I can't help but think most of them would be quite impractical as an actual pocket pen far a variety of reasons, at least the way I use them. As you alluded to, ink capacity isn't a big deal. I have a standard cartridge in mine that I keep refilling, and will last me a month easily. KWZ Grapefruit at the moment.

Hi AkselA -- oh I'm glad you found your Traveler's brass pen! :) Yes, some of the pens I have are a bit big for actual pocket carry for sure. And yet I do often carry around the Moonman Mini Wancai's - I'm just more careful in the extreme heat. :)

TWSBI Mini Silver was my first pocket pen. I had it in a coat pocket and lost it somewhere in a restaurant about a year in. I really should invest in another one. So easy to clean and maintain and wrote so nicely. I love my Kaweco Brass Sport and use it as my EDC. I can tell it's actually in my pocket. You know when a pen is comfortable, useful and the writing is bliss. I have several more expensive pens but I'd never leave the house with any of them. 1. I second your approval of the Pilot Petit1 ($3.30), although developments in my preferences have resulted in mine being retired.
    2. I HATE my Kaweco Frosted Sport but LOVE my Kaweco Steel Sport. The plastic feels cheap but the steel feels invincible.
    3. My favorite pocket pen is my favorite pen overall, the Sailor Pro Gear Mini. A flawless little beauty. Pricy, though.
    4. I don't really consider the Pilot Elite/E95s a pocket pen, because it is too gorgeous and precious ever to be actually put in a pocket, despite its diminutive size when capped. Highly recommended anyway. But get the champagne/burgundy, not the boring all black like mine.

Hi Ichiro -- I looked at the Pilot E95 they are great and it's on my long range wish list!!!! :) I think the heavier aluminum or steel Kaweco's would be better for me than the plastic due to my understanding that the nib units screw in ?? Love this video. I only have 3 pocket pens, a 2007 Pilot petite, a Kaweco Sport im neon yellow and a Kaweco liliput in aluminium. Once posted the last of these writes beautifully, but I find posting it a bit fiddly. I don‘t write as much as you, so a cartridge is plenty for me. I rinse them out and use them again with a syringe. This works much better than most converters, especially the little Kaweco one.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  2 роки тому

Hi nommh -- I definately didn't like the little Kaweco converter at first but I finally adapted to it as I like to draw the ink in thru the nib and feed for nice instant writing ... however using a cartridge works too and I just dip the nib part into the vial which normally works great for quick start writing. :)

What a fun collection of pocket pens! You have a nice diversity of them. I hope you get paid when people watch half the video then rewind back to the beginning because I probably did that about 8 times while I was cooking dinner…lol. I leaned some new things in this video, such as try different inks when there is a flow problem. I’m having that issue with some of my pens. Didn’t occur to me to try different inks.
Have you tried using a sonic cleaner to get rid of the stains in your pen? I wonder if that would work.

The Pilot Petit 1 is what got me properly into fountain pens generally, and pocket pens in particular. I currently have three (and one of the brush pens). Only weak point for me is the clip, which breaks easily. Flipside of that is that the stub left after the clip breaks off makes a great rollstop once sanded smooth, and I never actually clip my pens to anything really.

"I picked everything I thought was pocket size." Exactly it. There's a range that is called a pocket pen today. 😁
What really IS a pocket pen? Is it one that fits a shirt pocket? A watch pocket? Trousers pocket?
The definition has changed over the years. My smaller than a standard international ink cartridge uncapped one: is it one? Any of the ringtops: are they all "ladies" like some say, or were they worn on a watch chain as well, like old-timers said, making them pocket pens? If your Waterman's model ends in a V, it is a vest pocket pen. 😉
Is it the size? What is it? 🤔
IMO, it's all of the above. 😁
What a lovely collection of the range! I'm impressed! Thanks for sharing them!

    • @ChrisSaenz13

Hi Paul --- I still am not so sure on the TWSBI Mini size side of things those seem too big to be called pocket size but I went with it because it's generally accepted as a pocket pen and I had the Opus 88 Mini and the Sailor Lecoule in that category. :)

I'm easy. I just go by what the maker says. If they call it a pocket pen, so do I. But, really, a pocket pen is one that can't be used comfortably, or usually at all, unless it's posted. Posting makes it a full sized pen because the body is very short, but the cap is extra long, and can almost cover the barrel when you put the cap on.
This has really been the definition for several decades at least. You can then put such pens loose into pretty much any pocket. My pocket pens don't even have clips, though you can buy clips for the Kaweco Sports, if you like. I don't because I'm an old man, but I doubt if I've used the clip on any pen, whether fountain pen, rollerball pen, or even mechanical pencils, more than two or three times in my life.
The odd thing is that I still like pens with clips because I think a pen looks naked without one, and because a clip makes a good roll stop, but I just hate actually using a clip. It wouldn't be very smart to carry my very expensive pens with them clipped onto a pocket, so it makes sense to carry them in pen cases, but I even carry by cheap TWSBI pens in pen cases.

I resisted getting any pocket pens for a long time, but eventually gave in and bought a Kaweco Sport, and immediately understood what the fuss was about. However, I found that it was too easy to pull it out of my pocket without realising. I now carry a brass Sport with me instead with a medium nib and Waterman Mysterious Blue - because it's for ad-hoc use, I want something that will write on most paper. Hi Chris, as you obviously like pocket pens a suggestion would be to look at the Ohto Tasche. I found one on Amazon for £8, and it's a wonderful very tiny pen. The ink that came in the cartridge with it was awful and just seemed to pour out of the nib, but once i flushed the cartridge out and loaded it with Diamine Writer's Blood it writes like a dream. So smooth and perfect and nicely fine.
I did buy an MVP but the nib was seriously bad. In the end i just put a Jinhao #5 in it and it writes lovely now. Since then i've been practising nib working on cheap jinhao nibs so i'll probably put the original back in soon and see if i can get it writing nicely.

First, you may already know this, but Iroshizuku is adding four new colors to the ink lineup, and getting rid of three others, or so I've heard. I'm always ready to buy a new Iroshizuku ink.
I like pocket pens, but I don't have very many right now. I have two of the Kaweco Brass Sports, one with s steel nib, and one with a gold nib. I absolutely love the Brass Sport, whether steel or gold nib. There's just something special about the way in feels in my hand. I think I'm going to collect the metal ones. There's aluminum, steel, and I'm pretty sure there's a copper one. Even with gold nibs, they cost very little, and there's only fo0ur of them. Beats collecting Namiki Maki-e.
I have only four of the plastic Sports now. I lost one, and gave three away.
I'm up to, I think, a dozen of the Petit1 pens. The seem to almost never dry out, so I have one in every type of carry bag I have, and in every pencil or pen kit. The Petit1 is so cheap that losing one is no big deal, and cheap enough to give away to anyone who wants to try writing with a fountain pen.

Both in solid colors (Ruby red and Iron Blue). Like you, I always love broads best. But Sailor’s medium-fine (in both gold and steel) is a particularly sweet and extremely satisfying nib to write with. Almost addictive and unputdownable. And I’m hardly exaggerating. I’d take a Lecoule over any Safari, Metro, Eco etc…every day of the week. 🙂

LOL I don't carry those 3: TWSBI Mini, Opus 88 Mini and Sailor Lecoule in my actual pocket because my pockets of my jeans are not big enough but a shirt or jacket pocket would work. Even a hoodie pocket. LOL I'm hoping I bond better with the F/M Sailor nib -- it's all about ink I'm sure for me. :) More experiments needed.

Paper and ink certainly play an under-appreciated role in the performance of our pens and the satisfaction we get from using them. Have you tried any of the numerous Sailor inks out there? My Wancai came with a fungal infection. I wanted to like it so much but it smells like feet and I'm afraid to get another one.

Oh that's awful - I didn't have that experience - it would have bothered me awful if it happened to me!

Over the years I've heard it pronounced so many ways ... I guess when I return from my break I'll study up and see if I can make myself learn the real correct way to say it some big channels say it similar to me but I have no certainty. Sorry if I've offended. I always thought it was Ka-Vekko in pronunciation.
