Trying Out a Weird Jumbo Fountain Pen (Ironically called the Q1 Mini)

- This pen surprised me in several ways. First of all, I didn't expect it to be so big, when it's called a mini. I also enjoyed the little magnifying glass on the cap, and I was skeptical about how easy it would be to grip, but it turned out to be pretty comfortable. I think if it had been longer or made out of a heavier material, things could have gotten bad quickly as far as ergonomics are concerned, but it turned out to be ok.
Here's where I bought it, and at the time of me posting this, you can see that the brand name is officially "Majohn" instead of Moonman. I don't really know the official status of that though: www.amazon.com...

If it’s critique in class you are absolutely obligated to listen to them.
The amount of blue is highly subjective (ask Picasso) you speak up for what you believe. This maybe the wisdom your prof is trying to impart, stay true to you!!
Remember "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" ... one mans "Too much Blue" is another mans "Perfect amount of Blue" , as long as your not getting upset and defensive over the critiques than just take others opinions as a way to understand more of the world :) you don't have to agree but understanding is powerful :)

That black ink is probably the most satisfying thing I’ve watched in a long time.
I love using eyedropper pens - I have found that just dipping the nib in the ink is enough to get things started if the ink isn't making it all the way through the feed as fast as you want it to in a pen that has been cleaned and dried all the way (or a new pen)

I want to start out by saying great video as always, I'm looking forward to seeing the full sketchbook!
For what you were saying about criticism, I think I'm the same way in crits, I am usually pretty confident that there are errors and mistakes in my work, but I find that a lot of the criticisms I get are preference based or just plain wrong, so I find myself defending my work more than I would like too, only because I don't think half the criticisms I get are even remotely close to why I don't like the way things I made turn out.
The problem is then I get really into my head about whether or not my dismissal of certain criticisms is just some subconscious defense mechanism and if my work is even worse than I thought, and from then on it's just an downwards spiral of mistrusting my own eyes and all positive feedback I have ever received.
The moral of the story being I don't think you're alone in that concern.

You got a calming voice bro. I got frustrated with fountain pens after having trouble getting them going then I switched to dip pens, your video helped me like them again. I only accept critique if it adds something new to my approach to all art, not just one piece. I think gathering different ways of thinking of things keeps things interesting, it's a great motivator and reflects in your work, evidently as it does in yours.

About the ink names, 'konpeki' means 'azure'. 'kosumosu' is just the way they pronounce 'cosmos' (I'm assuming the type of flower because of the pink colour, not as in space). And 'tsutsuji' means 'azalea'.
So the names are quite poetic too!

I was just thinking about writing in the comments a commendation (with a sliiiiightly negative reminiscence) when you started talking about how you might not take seemingly negative constructive criticism well. I, as an artist, completely understand your position. Now, I'm at an impasse. Alas, here goes...
The pieces in this video were both accomplished and impeccable. (I do love the blue one mainly because that's my favorite color.) When you use clearer lines and shapes (minus your paintings because of the nature of the beast, of course), your work finds its "PeterDrawness" with greater expression. Your bulbous characters from the (rather recent) past always felt as if you were stuck in a dark sludge that had been kept trapped by uncontrollable vines where once clear lines used would jettison. These past few months your work has felt reinvigorated. The fun you're having is pushing through the pixels of your audiences' various devices.
You seem like a healthier and happier you, now. Therein laid my original conundrum.

There is no reason not to defend your choices as long as you are willing to accept that you could be wrong. If someone can't back up their criticism then it is not valid so a healthy debate on disagreements is always a good thing.
I have this Moonman Q1 in every colour except for clear! The nib can be exchanged with Bock nibs - threads match up exactly, and Parallel nibs can friction fit inside too
Side note - Moonman was forced to change their name since Kaweco trademarked the "Moonman" name, so new boxes are now branded as Majohn or Mojiang. Kaweco felt that Moonman had copied their design of the Sport in one of their models that had hexagonal features, so Kaweco trademarked "Moonman" out of spite.

In all my years, i've never heard a pen described as "comically proportioned" lol
As an artist and teacher, I would have to say that not many people, especially at the undergraduate level, understand the purpose of critiques. Many take a critique of the work as a critique of their person. Some tips I give on how to take a crit are, 1) don't take anything personally. Your art is not you and you are not your art. One can like your art and not like you or one can like you and not your art. 2) don't point out the flaws or problems in your work. If the viewer doesn't see it as a flaw then it may or may not be one. 3) the crit is there to give you a chance to view the work through another person's eyes. It is not to make you do it their way. (this goes back to the "you should have used more blue")
We think of a crit as a negative when it is simply a way to discuss pros and cons of the work. Yes, you should be able to defend your choices but you should also be open to the possibility that your choices are not automatically the best choice. After all, is the student in school to learn, or do they have it all figured out already?

Taking a semester off from going back to school atm, definitely don't miss those types of classroom antics. I would definitely talk to the professor about it and see what he / she thinks about you defending your work, if they would prefer you just took it and dismissed what you don't agree with on your own or not. I'm studying IT security, hope I can make something out of it soon enough

I don't take criticism well either. Especially on my designs or artwork because I pour so much of myself into the work so I take the criticism as an insult to who I am.

Can’t wait to see what you put up next! Also, I think it’s fine to speak up. The fact that you’re asking whether you’ve got an issue with taking on feedback means you’re better than most. As the creator you have the right to say “This is what I intended”.
They’re quite a nice pen,very comfortable to hold and use. There is also a fude nib.

The point of critiques are to learn what others are seeing in your work, have an open discussion and learn how to talk about your work. As a professor I want to see my students actively listening, taking notes, and responding with thoughtful statements, rebuttals, and questions. Each professor conducts critiques in our own way, if you are growing as an artist then you are doing what you need to do in class.

Iroshizuku Ajisai (hydrangea I think) is my absolute favorite ink color...it is the perfect blue in being just slightly every so slightly purple so that it isn't a boring navy blue but not too much that its obnoxious. That on top of being the quality of Pilot's ink....its just great. I like Kon-peki, but its a little stayed for my taste

I have struggled with the question of how much critique I take to heart, Peter. The answer for me is that all criticism is listened to but only criticism touching on concepts I am presently developing is attended, the marginal criticisms have either been addressed or are existential to the process. (Don't try to deal with the tsunami of criticism you will hear on UA-cam or other media.) On another topic: I too got a bottle of Tsutsuji and it was good for correcting papers I guess. It was put to good effect on a window sill and in the early morning throws extravagant color on the floor and walls. It is also a charming paper weight, of course.

I feel I should mention in relation to your comments on the lawsuits. That Ford was sued for his gasoline powered automobiles, by the Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers. These kind of things are normal in business, and generally big companies will always try to put down anyone who challenges their market.

The way I view it as far as art criticism goes is that, art is incredibly subjective. what you like other people will find awful; it's just the nature of the Beast. And the famous line you are your worst critic becomes compounded when others outside of yourself also criticized and ends up creating negative feedback loops and this then leads to doubt in yourself. it can cause you to change something about your art style that you fundamentally don't like and cause you to be discouraged from creating anything. If you strongly feel that this looks good then that's all that really matters because art is a representation of yourself, not someone else. And if that person feels that you don't have enough blue in your art, that just means that's how they feel. Art isn't like math where 1 + 1 is 2 and there's no other answers, this is because everybody's wired differently, quite literally. This means everybody's "Machinery" in their head will compare different Hues, line, thicknesses and, lengths differently than another person. this means for you this amount is perfect but for somebody else it is not. again this is fine because this is your representation of you, not that one other person or 10000 or ten billion. You shouldn't take this as an attack on your personal image though. personally I think most people don't fully grasp this and why it feels so damaging to be criticized in art is because it feels as though they're criticizing yourself. But they're not; they're merely comparing their image to yours and saying mine has more blue in it than yours and everybody wants everyone else to be just like them. so they share that regardless of your feelings and your self image that you put on the page because when other people look at art. their looking for themselves. when they can't seem to find that or feels it's removed; they can't quite connect with it and then they think how can this be changed to fit me better. Aside from all that I find your drawings very deep and rooted in meaning and Beyond just interesting. I find your use of light and dark incredibly mesmerizing and very well-balanced, I suppose that could be said I find a lot of myself in your drawings. Your drawings are packed with immense detail supplemented with white empty areas that for me, compliment incredibly well.
but that's just my opinion ;)

i think with criticism, you have to take into account that people are saying things from a perspective that isn't yours which is cool, but that doesn't mean either of you are right and that then creates an opportunity for exchange and reinforcement of your ideas to achieve the best product if that is your goal. I run into this with my graphic design work where someone will have a critique of your idea, you push back, and they can either accept your reasoning or defend their idea which is totally valid from both of your sides. Usually this works well in a group scenario when you are all on the same team trying to achieve the best work as a team and letting the best ideas float to the top requires a lot of defending your takes on ideas, but also being willing to see when other people have an idea that works better, both are good. if you find yourself only thinking other people are wrong and your ideas are always right though, you might be straying into the territory that you fear being in. i end up thinking about stuff like this a lot, as a graphic designer, your work will go through 3-4 rounds of critique by multiple parties before seeing the light of day so that type of process is very central to that type of work, you have to also take into consideration who the critique is coming from (for ex. a design professor vs your friend that doesn't know color theory or really anything will have entirely different things to say that are both valid and true to them, but who they are should also play into how much their opinion affects your ideas on a certain project).
Q for Qcumber? Holds a LOT of ink, surprisingly it is very comfortable to use. Only "Mini" is misnamed.

Also, Peter, I think you have a point -- feedback/criticism that isn't accompanied with proper reasoning or thought is sort of useless because it is just someone's opinion without any of the background. If someone wants you to add more blue, maybe it is because the piece feels very melancholy to them (or they feel very melancholy) and thus the blue makes sense for them, though for you it is not a melancholy picture and thus doesn't require blue. But that explanation and reasoning is what is most important ya know?

Hi Ya Peter! Love Ya! 💕 Great video! I would say, let the other people give their critique, then totally disregard it. Unless you're getting critiques from professionals with more experience than you, I wouldn't worry about taking them seriously.
Also, maybe sometime you could design a back-lit shelf to display those beautiful ink bottles with. It might look cool behind your desk somewhere where we'd get to see it! 💕
Love the idea of a back-lit shelf for inks, the bottles are beautiful. Fancy pens standing in a fancy wood block would look nice, too. I wish paints came in nice bottles, but can't imagine the price markup that would cause, lol!

I'm in my second year of a landscape architecture course in college (don't ask me what landscape architecture is) and I have the same 'problem' as you do Peter. I feel I'm plainly dissatisfied with criticism even when I'm constantly trying to learn something from it. And that leads me to occasionally argue my case to an extent I feel no one else does in my course. I think it's because I spend the most time thinking about my own projects, obviously. So for someone who in contrast has spent so little time with it to criticize any part of it often feels like they simply haven't appreciated it fully. In case you haven't heard it, I was recently reassured from one of the main teachers that the further we get into the studies that dissatisfaction with others criticism becomes far more common.
I've had my fair share of unsatisfying criticism in architecture school, but I took it as a challenge that either I am not explaining my project well, or my subject matter is not as compelling as I had thought. Also I doubt you are the only one invested in their work at your school, so I hope you find someone to talk shop with and bounce ideas off of.

On yet another note, I've been "speaking up" to teachers since first grade, and I make no apologies for it. A good educational critic should always ask "why?" and invite debate, wherein your own inner critic will either fight for dominance, or acquiesce with grace. Either way, you end up learning something. Otherwise, they're just another person moving their lips or fingertips!

How do you store all your pens? You must have 100s this follows my having to make a very big pencil case for mine.

Hullo Peter, Wonderful video and I enjoyed the drawings and I rather liked the blue ink and the beefier nib! i wonder if you have trouble with your pens getting clogged? DO you leave your pens filled with ink? I have found mine tend to dry out and cleaning is not an easy thing. The Triple Tail from Noodler's is so hard to clean and I empty it after each use. Maybe I need to use it everyday? I just do not have enough drawing in ink do do everyday. I know you draw a lot, but it is relative right? Ah well I have some sweet noodlers ink it is a Turquoise Blue and so nice. I like the bottles you showed us today, but I believe the price might just be a bit much for my wallet! Be safe out there and have a grand day!

Yeah these kind of pens are pretty easy to fill if you’ve got an eyedropper, and a lot of them come with one

I look at criticism like this. As the creator of your artistic expressions, your decisions are yours. If it comes down to technic and choice of medium; and the advice is actually from a place of genuine knowledge of craft that could be useful to your artistic growth, do with it what you will. Your uniqueness as an artist deserves no defending. Lots of unnecessary heckling to creative individuals to make the artists bend more towards popular opinion and lose their individuality as a creator/artist.

High chance that you won't see this, but I feel compelled to answer your end-of-the-video musings: Whether or not you 'push back' I think is highly dependent on the setting. On one hand, pushing back is a good way to challenge the initial proposition in a way that spurs them to elaborate and possibly get more out of it (for the both of you), as well as shows that you've obviously put a lot of thought into your work and it isn't just lackadaisical. However, it is also very important to be able to just sit and take criticism. Many times outside of school you can't be there to actively defend from criticism, so getting used to hearing (more likely - seeing) opinions which are not wholly sensical, is just necessary. It's also valuable to be able to hear criticism which you may not agree with and discern what that criticism stems from, so that you can get an understanding of how people outside of yourself view your works - in this way even if what they're saying is incorrect, you can still improve your work in the future by learning where people's eyes are drawn to in regard to certain patterns/colors/etc. and leverage that to your advantage (just as one example).
Final thoughts though, it really does depend on the setting and what the prof is actually looking for you all to get out of it. If that's in question - just ask them! Any prof worth their salt will appreciate a student's interaction, and if they aren't worth their salt then what do you care how they view your ability to take criticism :p
Never 'shut up and take it'. I never did in school and I don't do it now. It's OK to rebuff criticism kindly and thoughtfully. No need to get heated and it would be fine.
