Whenever he got to play with half decent players, he became unplayable. The fact that he was always up there in the list of top players despite playing with less than decent squads speaks volumes of his greatness.

That's a silly thing to say, Gerrard was moved further forward throughout his career because he never had the tactical or positional discipline to be a holding midfielder, ok so Rodgers played him as one, but Rodgers couldn't organise a defence if he had the US military and it showed by the fact that we were defensively weak the entire season under Rodger we got close to the title. Sitting and spraying passes about, great, chasing back and tackling, amazing, but a great DM like Fabinho doesn't NEED to chase back and tackle because his positional ability means he never needs to. Maldini said it best, if he has to chase back or make a sliding tackle it's because he was in the wrong position to begin with, that was Gerrard all over and why we were such a strong side defensively under Rafa, because Gerrard was playing as an AM behind Torres with Mascherano brought in to hold, if he was as good as Fabinho why bother signing the Monster Masch? Because Rafa CAN organise a defence (as long as the players are competent, hence how Everton is going). Gerrard was a real life Roy of the Rovers and was best when given a free role, like Under Rafa, when even the man himself admits he was playing the best football of his career. I question whether people actually watched him play throughout his career when they say things like that. Also claiming he could pass as well as Thiago is ridiculous too, and Henderson is a playmaker, sets the tempo of the game, another thing Gerrard never did. All 3 are great, in the top5 of their generation for what they do, what Gerrard had was being almost as good as Thiago at passing, almost as good a finisher from midfield as Lampard, but not as good as these players at what it is they do best, but that's what made Gerrard so good, being almost as good as multiple players in different aspects of the game, maybe making him the most complete midfielder the world has ever seen. The ONE single attribute he was better than every one at of his generation (besides MAYBE Juniniho Pernambucano) was long range shooting. It was being such an all round talent and his ability to grab a game by the scruff of the neck and drag us kicking and screaming to a win that made him so good, but stop giving Liverpool fans a bad name with this kind of hyperbole, it's ok to not be as good as someone else at something, it doesn't make you a poor player or worse than that player, he was clearly more valuable to his team because of being such a well rounded midfielder

Mo plays in one of the world's best front three, with a world class backline and goalie. And now a bench that can actually replace you and let you rest. You put Stevie in this team, he'd be the best player and captain no question. For example, he scored more goals in 08-09 than Torres did and almost the same as Ronaldo 😂 that's the year he dragged us to within four points of United in second place. He had some good players around him but Ronaldo played all season with Tevez and Rooney, they had Vidic and Rio at the back, they got to the CL final. I love this team but nobody else could have done what he did. Only Suarez came close, but Stevie did it for years. People forget how many times Gerrard was nominated for the Ballon D'or. Not exactly anybody's fault two freaks of nature played for so long. You think Mo would have had a shout when CR and Messi were at their peak? During Gerrard's early years and his prime, Liverpool were under incompetent and corrupt ownership. Liverpool's current manager Klopp is one of the best managers ever and his pressing-style of play is perfect for Gerrard who was all-action all the time be it attacking or delivering bone-crunching tackles. That Gerrard you see in the video playing under Klopp would've won him at least one World Player of the Year and that's an understatement.
Anyone who doesn't have this man at the top of their all-time greatest midfielders list didn't watch him play. Don't try deny it. Liverpool without Gerrard would be fighting their way out of relegation.

Against Portugal in the 2nd half he made some incredible tackles. They subbed out Gerrard in the 82 min and conceded in 83rd lol without him shielding their defense.
Positionally lacking tho, so we were always much stronger when he didn't play as a holding midfielder. It's where he started his career yet ever manager after Roy Evans refused to play him as a DM, except Rodgers and we all know how good Rodgers is at organising a defence

Gerrard was an incredible player, what a complete midfielder, absolute leadership, technical, elegant, powerful, physically strong, scorer, enormous shot from distance, defensively formidable.... Stevie G is the reason why I am a Liverpool fan, Gerrard is the last great "box-to-box" midfielder of this generation
On a different level to Lampard and Scholes, more of a complete player, knew he was a top top player but certainly didn't give it the ego-maniac attitude and almost seems embarrassed by the plaudits/adulation he received.

It's spectacular that many people compare De Bruyne to Gerrard and even think that he's better. De Bruyne is a better playmaker and is probably level with Gerrard on technical ability but Gerrard was better at everything else. The goals he scored, the exceptional tackles and defending along with his ridiculous physicality and work rate. He could also play in way more positions than De Bruyne as well

I'm a Liverpool fan, but come on, don't be blinded by who you support. Lampard was a better finisher than Gerrard, Scholes a better passer than Gerrard, but what Gerrard had was ALMOST the same quality as both of those in both departments AND was the real life Roy of the Rovers, able to single handed drag us through games and win us Trophies. Only 2 FA cup finals have been named after a player and that was Stanley Matthews and Steven Gerrard, but to try and paint him as 'better' than Scholes and Lampard is as myopic as Wenger asked about his own players poor tackle. If he was THAT much better than Lampard so many successive England managers wouldn't have tried shoe horning them both into the midfield. I'm nearly 46 and Gerrard is my favourite player of all time, but even I'm not foolish enough to think he was so head and shoulders above those 2 because he wasn't, but the benefit to Liverpool of Gerrard was like having both those players in our midfield rolled into one player, but both Scholes and Lampard were in the top 5 midfielders of their generation, Gerrard was just a better all round player but not better than either at what they were best at.
SG8 was asked to play in many areas to cover the team. He was even asked to play as left back during houllier time. A defensive midfielder too.. So he was never really played at his best position as creative attacking midfielder. He sacrificed a lot for the team. Never had the opporturnity to have a complete team like LFC has now. Djimi Traore as team mate? Tell me that scholes and lampard have ever done that

Over his career, Gerrard demonstrated most of the skills Giggs, Scholes, Keane AND Beckham managed to show off. This video's chapters demonstrate that. Together, those 5 would have been immortal. A midfield three of Gerrard, Keane and Scholes with Giggs and Beckham as the WFs. Neville and Irwin on the overlap. Epic. Cantona or RVN would have thrived in that front 5 in the late 90s/00s era.

Scholes was a better passer, Lampard was a better goal scorer, but neither of them came close to Gerrard's all round game and what it brought to a team. He picked games up by the scruff of the neck like no other English player I've seen in the modern game. It's a huge shame that England couldn't find a way to accomodate all three effectively. Personally, I think a 4-5-1 morphing into a 4-4-3 when on the attack, would have been the best option. None of that nonsense of diamonds with Scholes shunted out left like Euro 2004, or putting Gerrard on the left wing like 2010. England managers in the 00s were too rigid with their 4-4-2s to try something better suited to their players.

with Lampard you have a leader that can give you goal threat from the midfield, with Scholes you have a passing magician with seamless playmaking, with gerrard you have an all-rounder that can seamlessly into any system you put him in.
