Much of the non-European/American world considers anyone that is your parent’s footing as your uncles or aunts. I.e, your parent’s first cousins are on equal footing as your parents, therefore they would have seniority over you as an aunt or uncle would.

I think part of why the Samoan family tree is so confusing is because they don’t quite understand it themselves. For instance, your dads cousin is not your uncle. And like when they throw Jimmy Snuka in the mix, he’s not blood related at all. They just call him family because he is a fellow Pacific Islander. I’m not sure if some of them even know that.

This is true with a lot Samoan/ Pacific Islander families. I used to work at a high school in San Diego, CA and some of the students were of Samoan descent. Some of the females played varsity softball and when they played a game at the school, all of their uncles, aunts, cousins, brothers, and sisters would attend. Trying to figure out who was related to who was like a calculus problem.

Or just by name without relation title. However, my cousins' kids all call me Uncle. Really, relation title is all about age and respect.

So the thing about islander families that a lot of people don’t quite understand is that we don’t put hard tags on who everyone is. We have cousins that we call uncles or visa versa. We have people that we grow up with that we call cousin but aren’t actually related. We don’t refer to half brothers or sisters as halves, they are just brothers and sisters because it’s not genuine to call them half’s. Basically my point is that I see a lot of people saying stuff like “they aren’t actually related” when talking about certain people. We don’t think like that.
