Brad, You inspired me to test my tap water. turns out it's 130 ppm so I could use that in a pinch. Now I'm going to test EVERYTHING, MUAHAHAHA!!!

Thanks for the water video. I do think you have saved my carivorous plant collection. I have been growing several types of miniature and aquatic sundews for about a year. Because I am in southern California my sundews live outside and haven't completely gone dormant but have slowd down. I knew from the California Carnivore site not to use tap water or even the Brita filtered water. I have been using a "filtered" water from CVS pharmacy. After seeing this video I got a tester. Wow! My tap water has 485 PPM and even with the Brita it is 465PPM. I tested the filtered water bought from CVS and it is 0 PPM so not good, but not yet lethal, for my sundews. I have found Arrowhead Spring Water from Costco that measures 133 for this 2 1/2 gallon container but the web site gives a range of 29 to 239 for this water. I have emialed the company for some clarification. At least I have some to use for awhile. I assume since the 0 PPM water hasn't killed the plants by now, after a year's use, that I don't need to create a new bog garden. Please advise if you think I should. How are they doing
I live in San Diego, CA and collect rain water off a small asphalt roof. I wait for the roof to get a good washing before collecting and have a 500 gallon system to water my orchids throughout the year. I just got a TDS meter and my rain water is 15ppm. My tap water is 436ppm! I've been watering with the rain water for three years and it's made a big difference in what I can grow and how they do. Only have a couple carnivorous plants but would like to get more. Don't have a greenhouse. Really enjoy your videos. Update: Just checked a couple bottled waters, Aquafina 3ppm, Kirkland (Costco) 19ppm.

Yes Ph you want as acidic, lower on the ph scale. Soft water like rain, distilled, or RO.

Thanks for your video. Do you know what conversion factor your TDS meter uses? The one for KCl or 442TM? The second one is optimized for drinkwater, river, pond and gets you higher values. I bought a EC meter and have to calculate the TDS values myself, so it would be interesting to know which factor was used.

Just got my tester, it turned out that my tap is 42ppm. After filtering in with(old) britafilter- 20ppm!!!! It is hard to believe since i live in Queens NY. It looks like the "myth" that NY has a pretty good water turned out to be true :). Cheap bottled water which i get in local BJ's is 0-1ppm. I hope that the tester i got is not faulty because i will order myself a carnivorous plant this week. Fingers crossed.

Yo...ive always just used distilled water.....the water tastes surprisingly nice as well. Been using it for about 2 years now and i get very nice green and purple colours mixed with peat moss.
Def not boring to me...when you water ur nep..can the leaves get wet..I have a cutting in with spagham moss n fern bark in a pot set in a glass terranium. Can i also use fish tank water.... Plz advice. Great video as always. I'm a newbie

Nice video, I recommend to everyone who grow carnivorous plants to buy a TDS taster to check your water do to the difference of where you live, I did same experiments in my house and this was my reading,

I am trying the RO/DI water I make for my reef tank. It has zero TDS. Let me know if this is wrong. Venus flytraps and Serracenia in trays along with Sundew. Thanks.
Mine is 146 in Kelowna, in the Lower Mission area. I'm curious what the tap water is at my parent's house as they are up in Knox mountain.
Will a gravity fed ceramic filter like a Berkey clean unsuitable tap water sufficiently to make it safe? Berkey's will remove over 99% of chlorides and fluorides as well as bacteria and heavy metals.
"Great Value" is NOT "spring" water. Wal-mart's generic bottled water (Great Value) is actually "tap" water from the St. Louis water system. You may use "purified" water, which was not tested. Make sure the label states the water is purified using distillation or reverse osmosis.
Brad, do you think it is ok if the water is 0 tds? (Specifically for tropicals and nepenthes)
How about mixing Distilled water with one of these other waters? If my tap water is high and I mix with distilled water, couldn't I find a ratio to get the right PPM? I know my tap water has fluoride and possibly chlorine and possibly ammonia. I guess I need to buy a PPM meter.

Hey brad, I thought about your "bug water" and over 5 days the pitcher would be absorbing the nutrients as needed so the TDS would be slightly lower in nature? Would be great to see this tested inside of a pitcher somehow
You should look into investing in a water Ionizer aka a Kangen Machine Its a licensed medical device that creates 11ph, 9.5, 8.5, 6.0, 2.5. I'm giving my Venus fly trap 6.0 (Slightly acidic water). Plus the fact that it has so many antioxidants all my plants love it!
I am just a beginner with orchids and I have been misting them with the Evian mister you get in the beauty departments, as it is pure mineral water, (I thought that would be the best as tap water in Scotland like many countries contains added chemicals, etc). Does anyone have any advice about what you should mist orchids with please. I only have four plants and only want a hand held item that can be stored in the cupboard.

I purchased a meter and find that my tap water is 124 ppm, I am now using my tap water instead of constantly buying distilled water, great information.
cool, Not buying distilled water will pay for the TDS meter 10 fold! plus you will be able to more accurately fertilize your orchids.
Is Demineralized water safe to use for carnivorous plants? Distilled water seems hard to come by now.

I appreciate you made this video a long time ago & Iv always subscribed to the theory that completely pure water is bad for us to drink & possibly bad for other biological life for the reasons you explained. I thought it seemed like a logical hypothesis until recently when I came across these zero water filters which filter water for drinking which is 0ppm. Does this mean pure water is not bad for us or the plant's? It's a bit confusing...

I have been using water condensing from my air conditioner for my Venus fly trap anf the result is remarkable. The leaves and the trap sections have grown larger and healthier! I livein Mumbai, India, truly a tropical region where the Venus fly trap sharesw the same location of orchids, hoyas, staghorn and bromiliads!.I take care to protect the Venus fly trap from any nutrient that I apply for the rest of the collection. Can I udse sea weed extract for my Venus fly trap?
My tap is over 100 ppm, I live near DC, I have a reverse Osmosis water filter for my fish tank, I wanted to know what I can put in my pure water (0-1 ppm) so I can use it for carnivores plants
Nice. I used tap water that was run through a Brita filter pitcher. Could you do a further video using a Brita and bottled water? How about distilled water?
Britta filters are not sufficient to remove most minerals, and are mostly designed to improve taste (removing chlorine, for example) and are therefore not recommended for Carnivorous plants

I was wondering if Walmart distilled water was good. Been watching watering Venus fly traps for 3 years with it thinking it was the only option.
It's the other way around, deionised water get absorbed into the body much faster cause osmosis will drive lower towards higher salinity. So deionised water would be somewhat more hydrating ;)

With the water from a dehumidifier I saved a flytrap in 3 weeks :D works just like purified water

I used dehumidifer for 3 years on my carnivorous plants, I still have the same ones. There may be metal in the water, but it seems to be insignificant in bothering my collection

This is wonderful. I've just bought a dehumidifier and noticed how much water comes out of it. I live in a very wet area in Alaska and I felt bad pouring all of that seemingly clean water down the drain. Water can be expensive. I've used it and my plants seem to be fine with it, but I just wanted to know if anyone else had been doing the same thing. 😃
A Zero water filter at the end of life is 6ppm. Looks like I have a use for them after replacing the filter. They also include a TDS meter in each new purchase.

In Europe bottled water is usually marketed as "mineral water" which kind have gives the game away! Better for you but rubbish for plants (plus the whole idea of hauling water around the place is ludicrous). I think distilled, DI and rainwater are all basically the same - rainwater may have a tiny amount of dissolved acids in it which will give it a non zero TDS reading but rarely contains any mineral elements. My rule of thumb - if it tastes nice, it's probably no good for CPs or ericaceous plants!

Very good vídeo , essential to compare some water types, i have to a TDS and if you dont mind i will say here my results... Revers osmosis water:3ppm,Rainwater:3ppm,Pond water:94ppm,Tap water : 144ppm
I normally use revers osmosis water for all my cp´s, .. consider yourself a lucky one because you can use tap water ehehehehe(envy me -.-)
I know people who use too dehumidifier water and air conditioner and have good results... but i advise to check the ppms first if you guys want to use it..

You should consider the fact that the water is only being used for raising non-consumable plants. Since nobody will be eating them,I wouldn't worry about the heavy metal levels in my Sundews.
How do you know when to replant a Carnivorous Plant? Thanks
I replant mine every three years. I divide them up and replant the healthiest two bulbs or rhizomes and throw the rest out. Basically, do it when the consistency of the medium has broken down or when the pot is getting crowded out. If you want you can replant the other divided plants and expand your collection. Maybe, sell or give the extra plants away. I just want to maintain a one pot collection so thats why I throw most of my divisions out. Do not replant them into the wild. It's basically a judgement call and you will know when it needs to be done.

I just measured water from my tumbler dryer with a tds meter. It measured 30 ppm. Anything below 50 is optimal for venus fly traps, 50-100 is acceptable. Never buying water again. Just thought anyone with a tumbler dryer would appreciate this info.
Nice video, but a small note on DI water. It is absolutely safe to drink DI water, it just doesn't taste nice. Your kidney actually re-absorbs excess water.

I've been using tap water with all the plants I have, orchids, carnivorous plants, everything, but they seem fine, I live in a desert in California, so I do not have rainwater available, I have to remember to test my tap water.

How can you find out your tds without a tds meter
Take a litre of water (accurately measured), boil it down to a residue in a precisely weighed vessel until you have a solid residue - by convention at 180 C - and weigh the difference. Residual solids in milligrams per litre = ppm TDS.
Much more accurate than a meter but not very practical.
Do you even think about growing carnivorous plants with hydroponic? It work really well with normal plants so it has to work well with carnivorous. Unfortunately, I don't have enough carnivorous plants to test.
Naa, Never thought about it. I don't grow anything hydroponically but im sure you could do it with certain Carnivorous plants. A nepenthes cutting will last for ever in a jar of water and grow lots of roots.
Could I water my carnivorous plants with distilled water?
Yes. I have used DI water since I started my Bog Garden, 3yrs ago. The garden is in a pot outside, so it supplements with rain water (which I also collect in clean buckets, then store in empty DI water jugs.)

tds meter won't measure chlorine, ammonia,, etc in tap water. not sure those are good for plants or much else

I'm in Orange County California. Our tap water is 400+ ppm. Also contains fluoride and chloride, chlorine. Very toxic to plants and humans.
Tds is not everything. I have a ro system and i have to change filter every 6 months.
