just gonna add that the last ova being black n white was a deliberate artistic choice, as many animators had said it, animating in black n white with that level of detail is actually more expensive than doing it with color, other than that the rest of the video is criminally underrated and one of my favorites, as well as Gunbuster itself.

No, they ran out of time & colouring everything in would have taken too much time
That's why the last battle is only a diashow
They didn't have enough time to animate it

Just wanna draw to your attention how Gunbuster was released. Two episodes on VHS every few months. The arc of dad revenge is there so that the first two episodes have a cohesive arc. Smith dies in 3 to give her the push to use Gunbuster in 4. And then the final two episodes are the final two battles. I can see what you mean, while marathoning it's a weird pace, but if you watch it in blocks of two it feels like 3 two-parters and I dig that

There's also the point made about Kazumi's supposed heel-turn. Being released in pairs (and viewed as such) infers more time passes between 2 & 3 and 4 & 5 than is apparent - as if each pair of OVAs is essentially its own unified movie. Which, in many ways, they are:
~ 1 & 2 centered on Noriko finding closure with her father
~ 3 & 4 centered on Noriko learning to fulfill her true potential
~ 5 & 6 centered on Noriko rising from apprentice to mentor

It's really weird watching retrospectives of shows you remember waiting with anticipation for as each volume was released. It also makes you realize how much time has passed; sorta' like Gunbuster's time physics in reverse where years (decades actually) have flown by which seem like a short time to you, is looked on like ancient history to a generation that probably wasn't even born yet when these shows were created (wow I actually witnessed the "golden age" of anime first hand!)
I'm glad that people can still watch these shows and be moved and excited by the passion that was often put into them by pioneers that were figuring it all out, and Gainax was definitely an inspiration to many of us who had dreams of being creators ourselves because that's exactly what the Gainax team was; fans like us. Even today watching the last ep of Gunbuster can still attract a speck of dust to my eyes.

Well its a bit better than the subscription model for Ginga Eiyu Densetsu with 110 episodes and each laserdisc bringing you just 4, of course they later added some 50+ more because why not... I watched until about ep 40 in the 90es and had to wait a decade to watch the rest from a modern fansub (thankfully from the same fansub group). When i watched Gunbuster in the 90ies, i was able to obtain all 3 VHS tapes (2 episodes each) in a relatively short time. Mainly because i met a person with 1&2 and another with 1&3. VHS copying days... What i missed back then but watched last year, was Fushigi no Umi no Nadia, it was important as that is also a base for EVA, oh and the names for the ships in Gunbuster are in there too... Its not like Gainax ever stopped from reusing or referring their own content.

Ahhhh this video is criminally under-viewed. All these videos are criminally under-viewed! Subbed!
I used to have this thing I'd do when I was in college and had time/energy for three movie/media nights a week. We'd watch two episodes a week of an arc I called 'Gainax 101: Killing Super Robots and Bringing Them Back to Life' (it was art school practice to give everything a nasty pretentious title) where we'd watch Gunbuster, then Evangelion, then Diebuster, then Tengen Toppa, which had just come out. It's sort of emotionally exhausting to go through it all, but I think we made the circuit three times with new people before I finished school. I really see Gunbuster as an amazing feat of classic animation, like you put it so nicely, 'a standard of anime's golden age'. There's such an incredible energy to it all, and despite everything that by all rights usually lead to a narrative mess it's amazingly tight.
Anyways, cheers! I really enjoy these videos, I'll keep watching them!

The "criminaly under-viewed" part is 100% true. I bumped into this channel yesterday accidentally after watching Riding Bean (what a stupid name). I loved the Bean and this channel, and was really surprised when I saw it has 4k subs. I'm sure it'll blow up, the content is very high-quality.
And I think it got me on retro anime hook. I watched Wicked City after watching 5 mins of review on this channel, and it intrigued me very much.
      Now I need MORE
Btw, if somebody has a recommendation of smthng of a similar vibe to Wicked City, I would appreciate it. I like dark and gothic atmosphere, prolly should watch some OG Castlevania. (loved the Netflix series)

Great analysis on a masterpiece of an anime. However, one of the most overlooked parts about Gunbuster is how much it borrowed from Robert A. Heinlein's novel Starship Troopers. Just like the aliens in Starship Troopers, the space monsters are giant insects capable of interstellar travel. Also, the Noriko vs. Kashiwara fight references a chapter in Starship Troopers when Johnny Rico turned off the monitors of his powered suit during a training exercise.

    • @mabusestestament
      @mabusestestament 5 місяців тому

I agree Starship Troopers was a big influence. However, only one type of the aliens is insect-like or something. All others aren’t, they’re inspired by microscopic lifeforms and polyps etc.

Correction you cant believe the original uncut/unedited complete OVA is coming out on Bluray soon. The dub is an added bonus. Even if an English Dub wasnt included it wouldnt matter at all since it has English Subtitles. Not everything has to have an English Dub. What you have to understand and realize is that dubbing costs a lot of money. You have to pay to rent the studio to record you have to pay the voice actors. That's a lot of money. So if releases dont have them its not a big deal. This is up for preorder now at Right Stuf Anime so lock your preorder in

Gunbuster is one of those shows that doesn't leave you. even after watching it all those years ago, you still comeback to it over and over again. Plus that ending has never failed to make me tear up every single time. The last episode being in black and white was pure genius, but it would have been nicer if they remade some of the scenes to include more action sequences and animation.
    I love noriko so much

    • @freeculture
      @freeculture 2 роки тому +1

Yeah no matter how many times i watch it, it makes me cry as well. Seems the use of time dilation hasn't really been used much by others, I'm told the Sci-Fi novel "The Forever war" has this as well, gotta read it. "Ether" is from an old concept but it turns out modern astrophysicists currently do not treat space as an absolute "vacuum", it does have density albeit a very low one, but not zero.
I mean, explaining someone about time dilation, vs showing them this masterpiece... Do you get it? Because its real. Even if you don't travel near the speed of light and thru a generational ship reach another star and start a colony, that colony will have decoupled from "Earth" time. Think about it, each star is moving, and we are relatively in the far edge of our galaxy which is like a disc rotating. Relative to the inner parts, the outer is moving faster MUCH faster than the inner part. Our time is flowing different than the center of the galaxy. How could Einstein deduce this from pure thinking is beyond me... But it was verified by NASA etc, time dilation is a fact of the universe.

I get teary eyed in the last 3 episodes. Okay, last 5 or 6 episodes. The ending gets me every single time. I weep uncontrollably every single time Noriko's eyes widen as she sees the lights of the Earth coming on to spell it out in a 10,000 year old (likely) dead language. She starts the series looking up at the stars wondering what's out there, and ends it becoming one herself returning to the home that she has saved. I love Gunbuster so much. 11/10. If they cut out the gratuitous nudity every single episode, easily 15/10. lol Even just listening to the music in my car will get me really emotional and unable to prevent myself from choking up. It's probably dangerous actually. lol

Hey! I really enjoyed this vid, thanks.
I know I'm two years late but... lemme add something.
The final episode was made in black/white not because of budget restrictions, but because of artistic reasons.
They thought the black hole bomb was near-impossible to depict in color. Too beeg and stronk. Additionally, it makes the events look more "historic" and marks the timeskip.
Actually, painting a celluloid in monotone B/W takes about the same amount of time as colouring it any other color. Paint your car red or paint it black, it'll be the same price.
It is in fact more likely that this episode cost more to the studio. It was longer, more ambitious, and damn kino.
    Aim for the top!

    • @heinrichagrippa5681

From what I've hear/read it's even more crazy than that. It would have been simple to draw in colour but then shoot using black-and-white film, but being the unhinged maniac he is, Anno insisted on it being literally drawn in black-and-white and made the studio spend a fortune ordering expensive specialty ink in various shades of grey. So, far from saving money, the episode was actually significantly _more_ expensive to produce.

I like it from this old-style fanservice and having that good 80s, or 90s, look (although I mistook this as something from the 90s due to the design, but it's quite good). Here is lesser known lore between gunbuster and diebuster, like in 2048-2100: Next Generation Light Novel begins here
    Buster Machine 3 is built.
Debate over whether or not to leave the earth begins.
    Gunbuster Episode 6.
The half that want to leave earth do so, and colonize Sirius.
Remnants of an alien civilization discovered.
The 'Sirius Alliance' is formed and wants freedom from the overall Human Empire.
Thanks to the ancient aliens they discovered Energy of the Spiri Sirius Alliance figures out how to weaponize it. They no longer need computers
Earth refuses independence as they ran out of resources in the war with the Space Monsters, plans 'violent crackdown'.
Earth starts with a tech and numbers advantage, but has no industrial capacity anymore. Presumably, they build Nono here, as the last weapon created on earth with pre-Sirius War tech.
    Sirius War begins.
2100-2480 Earth is losing war; both sides have undergone a massive tech slide.
Jung Freud and the Eltrium Fleet come back the earth Empire tries to order them order them around but they overthrow the Earth Empire and establish a federation. Jung is elected president of Earth shes a called the hero of all humanity. clones of Kazumi Amano, Noriko Takaya, drive the sizzler against Sirius Alliance
    Ceasefire is called. Accepted.
Mission to retrieve the Gunbuster is launched. Fails as humanity can no longer understand the pre-war tech to do so.
Jung enters cryo sleep, a mass scramble to recover pre-war tech begins, s War restarts.
    2480-14292 Sirius War has stalemated.
Earth discovers an old Super-Excelion. Produces Two 'Werutoriumu' class ships based on it.
    Next Generation Manga begins here.
The 'Great Attractor', a being claiming to be God, attacks the Sirius System. Begins drawing in all of the particles in the universe towards it.
Jung reawakened, leads fleet consisting of the two Werutoriumus, and Buster Machines 4 and 5, built with pre-war tech, to fight it. Buster Machine 7 is not noted, as she wasn't thought up here. 6 doesn't show up for similar reasons.
No one knows because manga and the light novels were canceled.
Warp Tech sealed away at some point here
    Then
    Diebuster happens

(And perhaps, this was colorized and then made black and white during photography/post production.) And it might make the process of actually drawing that stuff harder. Doing contrast in black and white is a more delicate process.(Manga is more stylized than that, and uses a lot more whitespace.)

So Gunbuster black and white is "stylistic" despite being necessary (and i agree on that) while NGE still frames are only out of necessity, despite being even more symbolic than GB b&w. Ok.

That was the one thing I disagreed with in this video, too.

    I ship Noriko x Kazumi

IMO the only real flaw Gunbuster has is totally unnecessary bare tit in the culmination of the last episode, and maybe ep1 is somewhat boring. Everything else is great or at least fine.

well, considering Noriko was about to detonate the mother of all bombs that would eliminate the aliens once and for all and save humanity, not to mention that will likely could get her and kazumi killed, modesty wasn´t exactly the top of her priorities. plus, the badass aura she emits during that scene kinda lessen the fanservice effect, at least for me.

Gainax shows have this thing where they exaggerate the fanservice so much that you are forced to notice that it is in fact only there for your viewing pleasure and not for any reason within the story itself. Not sure what they were thinking this would achieve, but it seems a deliberate choice.

Oof, i'm going to have to skip this review. I absoutely DESPISE Hideki Anno and I think Evangelion in particular is quite possibly the worst piece of steaming trash I've ever seen in my life. So i'm not about to sit here and watch this guy get praised for anything he's ever done, when I am convinced he is absolutely a talentless hack and not even worthy of remembrance.

yet you still took the time to write all of this for everyone to read, yet no one seems to care,. when you despise something, you just walk away and watch something else, its not even worth telling all people you dislike it and youre about to throw up, unless its a rant or trash talking video. as for me replying to this? its saturday in the morning and Im kinda bored.

All that unnecessarily aggressive hyperbole made me think I was back in the 2011 "costumed rant/review" era of UA-cam again for a second *shudder*.

When the words "Twelve Thousand Years Later" appeared on screen, my heart just shattered. But then Jung's Welcome Homɘ grew it back so quickly I just got a cardiac arrest and died anyway. And now I'm a permanent resident in Mecha Heaven.
