Nicely done. I now know exactly how these speakers compliment each other. If you continue like this with the rest of the WGS line, we can all start buying more WGS speakers confident in what the speaker will sound like, and really dial in our speaker mixing strategies.
I needed a 112 cab for my Marshall 1x8 Origin 5 combo so I bought a used cab and it came with WGS Retro 30 in it. WOW, it sounded incredible. The Retro 30 blew away my Greenback and sounds amazing for my punk rock style. Now I need another 112 speaker cab for a 4 ohm combo amp and now I want to try either the Invader 50 or ET65.
I put veteran 30 on my blues jr and it sounds amazing. The stock fender speaker get muddy and floppy in the low end when you turn up the volume but the vet30 keep bass tight while preserves the high ends no matter how loud it gets. It kind of produce Marshall like tone with you put distortion pedal in front of it. You can call it poor-man-portable-Marshall setting.
I like the Retro better on the cleans, and to be honest I like them both on the dirty channel for different reasons , but If I had to pick one, I think I'd go with the Retro, but would totally depend on the amp, cab etc. The Veteran is definitely more of a scooped tone but still has a nice high end and abit of a bigger low end, and the Retro is more mid/high forward with nice balnced low end!
I use WGS green beret and celestion vintage 30s in an X pattern in one 4x12 and I also plug in a 2x12 with it and run a WGS veteran 30 and a celestion Greenback in it. Pure magic
The Retro sounds better here, but the mic placements are pretty different. The mic on the Veteran is pointed toward the side of the cone and the Retro’s mic is pointed toward the cap. That could make almost as much difference as the speakers themselves.
You need a speaker that is a combination of these two. I need them both in one speaker. The veteran has more low end chunk for heavy palm muting but is a little loose. The Retro has less bottom end but it's definitely tighter; Retro has high end clarity for leads and chording as well as a less reduced upper mid frequency. You need more upper mids and top end in the Veteran or more low end response in the Retro. It'll probably work either way. I'd buy 4 of them. For now I have to experiment between them in Combonation with the HM75s. It's going to take months to drop the cash on all those speakers. Great video though. We need many many more like this. Tomorrow.
Retro 30 is the best. Articulate, snappy, full, open sounding,, low mid oomph and touch sensitive. Basically... One word... BALLS. In a 412 cab? Killer... smiles for days...
The Retro 30 is obviously brighter. I've got one and it sounds fantastic by itself in a 1x12, but I've got it paired with a Reaper 30 in the top half of a stereo 4x12 and they sound fantastic. The Retro 30 sounds much like my Vintage 30 from the 90s, but a bit louder (103 dB sensitivity vs 100 for the V30). I think it's a fantastic speaker. If playing rock/metal and need one speaker to do it all, I highly recommend it.
That's one hellova mic placement illusion. I didn't realize the cabs were angled inward. I first disregarded this video as I'm sure many do due to the illusion. WGS should consider redoing just from a sales standpoint. I actually just bought two Retro's but not from this vid!
I have 2 retro 30s in my marshall 1966 2x12 and I couldn't be happier.. I however lean towards the british tones and contrary to some nay sayers, they are not overly bright.. I guess i have the right combination paired with a blackstar amp
I have, and use two sets of both these speakers. The Retro can handle more bass and the lowend gets tighter with volume. The Veteran can mush out there. The Retro is brighter, but it's mids are narrower sounding. The Veterans mids are wide and yawning. It's treble is smoother, not as spikey as the Retro or crisp as a real V30.
Guys, what do you think of the combination of the Vet 30 and the Retro 30 in a 2x12. Would it get similar to 2 Celestion Vintage 30 in a 2x12 cab? Would it be a good match for playing mostly hard rock and 80's metal? What about Vet 30+ Reaper for classic rock, hard rock and even 80's metal? Thanks
+Michael Olivier The cabinets are angled toward each other slightly. This is what gives the illusion that the microphones are in different positions in relation to the speakers.
+Michael Olivier Different speakers have different sweet spots, so it would be unfair to favor one speaker with a great mic location where it wouldn't work necessarily on a separate one. Competent engineers tend to look at a linear graphic representation of the mic signal, and can tell what a good mic location is based on the curve. You'll still hear the different characteristics of each shine through this way, but it's more likely to fit any mix without EQ.
Both are good, but if I had to choose, I'd go for the Retro 30. A clearer sound with slightly more high-end. The Veteran 30 sound a little mid-scooped.
hey i just wanted to say the last 2 amps have had warehouse speakers in them and i wont go back to anything else now, they are the best speakers out there, and I am picky.
@@PieIX I'm using G12H-75's Creamback and a Vintage 30's mixed in in the same cabinet. It probably sounds similar. I have an Egnater Tweaker that I play through it sometimes. Pretty versatile little amp.
I know this is a very old comment by the Veteran 30 I have doesn’t sound muffled like this at all! Maybe this will help others out who read this comment. I have it paired with a Reaper HP and the combo sounds amazing! I’m about to grab a et90 to pair with a Redback cuz I think it sounds a lil better than a creamback 75 plus has more watts than one too. The Redback is 150w so want something that’s closer to 100w at least
@@MetalheadOv666 Can't go wrong with the ET. Used and ET65 in a couple of amps and was always pleased with it's performance. I did have it paired with a separate cab with the Retro however the Retro never did grab me like the ET. If I were to need 2 x 12 again I would make them both ET's.
Wow. I didn't realize there would be that much of a difference. The Retro 30 sounds way better. The Veteran 30 has a weird midrange and yet still has the top end fizz.
hey wgs! was wondering you guys can tell me what speaker is the best for a blackstar htclub40 for punk/metal tones and I do play clean sometimes so I hope it handles dirt and clean fairly well
Withe drive engaged Honestly I can not tell the 2 speakers apart, The Veteran on clean is a bit darker but clear to my ears, the retro is a bit more mids to me but still has that awesome tone, Decision decision,
@@pieroog pretty awesome! I had a Reaper HP mixed with a Eminence Governor before that. I swapped the Governor and now the cab has a lot more clarity with agressive mids, tighter bass and a nice high end. I have a comparison vid up on my channel if you want to check it out. ;)

Retro has more mids than the Veteran but less than a Celestion. Just the right amount!!!
Shameless plug for the G12Q. I have a quartet of them in my 4x12. Pure magic.
Man that Tweaker amp sounds great! Both speakers sound great with gain with slight nod to the Retro 30. The Veteran is much more mid-scooped sounding.
Please do more videos like this, even combining both at the end. Thanks
This demo made it clear for me. I needed new speakers for my Marshall Code 100 2x12 (couldn’t stand the stock ones)
Retro 30’s brought it to life!!!!
Reapers are good too
Great video. WGS are great, i owned many and they will never let you down.
Hey what do you think about a G15 C or C/S for Xtreme metal with a VH140C ampeg head?

Which of these two speakers would you recommend for a Katana 100 Head? I'm not going to run the head in 50 watt mode or less for obvious reasons.
Did you figure out anything? I've got the same curiosity
Retro seems to have a little more presence and high end clarity
I want to hear them together for a 2x12 cab
That is what my daughter uses in her 2x12 cab. Sound killer together!
I put the Retro 30 and an ET65 in a 2x12 and they are a great pair!
Both together is the way to go
Veteran 30 has a more chunky bottom end - especially clean.
Pair them together. Wooh hooh!
Try it with single coils. Those buckers sound wolly/muddy. Both examples sounded like a blanket was tossed over the speakers

Why do a demo video with two entirely different mic positions on each speaker? we're not hearing a true comparison if you record each one differently.
+Michael Olivier Exactly what I was thinking... so much of the tonal differences are due to the slightly off axis of each mic
+Michael Olivier The cabinets are angled toward each other slightly. This is what gives the illusion that the microphones are in different positions in relation to the speakers.
