Add 2” brush/rock guards around the camper to protect all of your work from being damaged from a minor contact with anything. AND… put a set of throw-chains on the rear end for winter adventures. GREAT PROJECT‼️
Cover ugly wrinkles on the sides with Mat-Tracks (traction/recovery boards.) mounted so as to hide flaws. Add a High-Lift as well. Love what you’re doing!!!
I definitely would’ve went with more composite materials to build this rig, can’t imagine how much this thing weighs and not even having any interior done.
If you add heat/ac to this box; I advise ducting your heat to come out of floor vents and the ac from the roof mount/or vents. That way the heat rises all the way through the box and the ac falls all throughout the camper. Love the series and I can't wait to see it finished. Also I'm very excited for the door, can't wait to see how it works!
Today for Thanksgiving I am thankful for this channel, and all the effort you and your crew put into making these videos for us. Whether it's a crazy single-seater, an off-road Huracan, a drill-powered bike, a boat, or an insane off-road custom camper, we're here for it. Thank you!
Sorry to say Chris but the biggest mistake you have made so far is that you didn’t upgrade the suspension in the back because of the use of steel instead of aluminum. With what you have right now is probably pushing the weight limits before you start putting in cabinets, storage, refrigeration unit, heating and cooling systems, water storage, waste storage, wiring and plumbing, windows, doors, and there still is things like cushions and beds, etc. To fix it now you will need to remove the shell RIGHT NOW before it gets too heavy to lift. Before you ask how do I know? 20 years experience of building recreational vehicles just like you are doing. Oh, you also might want to check on the center of gravity and make sure that it’s not too heavy, you’ll have a tipping problem. Not trying to rain on your parade, just wanting you and the gang to be safe.
I should have waited until the end to comment, you need to stop now!! The truck is already starting to squat down because of the weight. Please rethink the design. There needs to be six inches of clearance AFTER you put the interior in the camping shell, how much do you have right now? I’m sorry but your project looks like it is now becoming a little dangerous.
@@brianswanigan9891 They haven't listened to reason on anything. It will get used once and parked like everything else. The boat still needs about 4k pounds of ballast to sit right in the water and I doubt that will ever happen.
@@BlueDually4x4 I know, and it’s scaring the crap out of me. When we would work on trucks like this we would avoid the Dodge Rams because of their frame using a C-channel style. Even when I had to install a 5th wheel hitch on a Dodge I would collapse the frame and we would have to spread it back out and reinforce the frame. So we would use Fords, and something of this weight should be on a F450 at the minimum. I checked the weight limit on the Ram and it’s 5-7k. He’s hitting that with the camper shell along. I just hope nothing fatal happens.
I once made a small charge pipe from stainless steel cause I didn’t have a welder for aluminum. I thought that was ghetto and was ashamed of it. I painted it to hide it. This was like 15 years ago when I was only 20. But this is next level ghetto. This thing is gonna weigh 15k lbs and be super top heavy. Ambition strikes built an aluminum shell on a newer 3500 and were within like 100 lbs of the “legal” gvwr. They said it handled like garbage until they did some suspension work. This thing isn’t doomed for failure, it IS a failure.
Ive said it multiple times in the past and ill say it again, Oscar is absolutely insane with that welding gun. Props to the guy for all his amazing work, he really puts out some top quality welds.
I am sorry I dont want to be rude or anything. I love your channel and have been following it from past couple of years. I dont know why you dont finish one project first and have a brainstroming session with your team and ask other before beggninng. I know you are the master along with Oscar it makes a great team. Just wish you take suggestions from others as well that would help you overcome these drawbacks well in advance.
@@cinnamonrollypoly short buses are also made of aluminum and fiberglass without several pounds of of appliances, holding tanks, waste tanks, and other required camping equipment on top of the suspension. An E/F 350 is barely the minimum size truck for a job like this and a Dodge Ram is absolutely not the vehicle to use with a weakened frame and a under powered transmission (unless it’s a manual). Building it on top is a lot different than having a gooseneck/5th wheel hitch in the bed, most of the weight is being pulled not carried. This suspension is going to break after the first pothole. I don’t know about vehicle inspections, but this wouldn’t pass R.V. inspection by any of the industry standards or state guidelines.
I remember you mentioning earlier on in this build that you’ll be getting a bunch of lead acid batteries to use with a power inverter. Just wanted to throw out a quick suggestion that you go the lithium (LiFePO4) route instead; the energy density is far better, they weigh significantly less, have a longer life, and are just generally way less finicky/tempermental. Renology is a fairly popular brand, but I personally went a cheaper route and went with ampere time (I think they changed their name to li-time). Then I found a charger-inverter, which when plugged into shore power will automatically charge the batteries, then when on battery-only it switches to inverter mode. I also added another DC-DC lithium charger for when we’re on the road, so the tow vehicle can charge the batteries too.

Nice, personally would have built a steel skeleton frame, got it galvanised, and riveted alloy/composite panels on with marine grade sealer, but great build none the less
Chris, mount these boxes with bolts. You will be able to remove them if it is needed. Also, in these gaps between you will accumulate a lot of mud and dust from the road, and that will rust. So I think it is better to have them removable.

I love this build from the start my only concern is tgat it's going to be too heavy. You should have used a combination of other materials to offset the weight
Even for non-automobile types this You Tube channel is interesting and enjoyable. The creativity and workmanship that goes into building the camper truck is admirable. Looking forward to watching more progress occur.
Its awesome how you've been listening to the comments and feedback. If you could do a track day on all of your old builds that would be sick! Maybe all race each other or something lol
I really hope your friend with the Porsche shop can get your 911 fixed. I bought my first 911 a few weeks ago and it's my absolute favorite car I've ever owned
you guys are brilliant at this, better than any car program/show shown here in the UK,been watching since just before COVID hit and am never disappointed with any builds,iv even made a skyline on my gta5 to look like yours, great work keep going and don't change how you are
Hey Oscar!? Does he have a freaking mouse in his pocket? All I kept hearing was we this or that, but all I saw was you cutting, sanding, welding, etc? 😂😂

Nice to see you back on the camper build, it’s looking awesome. I think your 911 needs a smoky old 5.9 Cummins under the hood, with a greasy hood stack. Lift it and stuff some ugly old mud tires under it, with kiddie pool fender flares bolted to the sides. Drive it past the Porch dealership as often as you can, just because. Keep on building guys!
Man i love this build its really looking awesome i do think lighter materials would have been a bonus but no one can say this isn't a absolute beast of a camper
The camper is a really cool project. I like the idea of painting it with bedliner instead of traditional paint. How are mud flaps going to fit behind the rear wheels, what if the rear boxes get soaking wet in the snow in the mountains. You are lucky to have Oscar on your team for a project like this.

Don’t most of these things get built by aluminum and fiberglass ?! I don’t get how they are using steel for literally everything

Insulated fiberglass panel instead of metal was my plan for light weight but you look ready for camping downtown Detroit
Love this thing! As an adventurous, camping person this is so cool. It looks great, boxes are beautiful addition plus pull out tables 👌
Oh good, you added more weight
