I'm so sorry your mom made fun of you. My mom was sympathetic, but she had no idea what to do because she'd always had dry skin and seldom broke out. That is, until she developed rosacea in late middle age. Then she learned for herself how frustrating constant breakouts are.
I eventually got her to take me to a dermatologist, but this was in the 70s and we didn't have good topicals to use. He prescribed antibiotics, but they only worked while I was taking them. I finally ended up taking Accutane in the early 80s, which cured my cystic acne. So now I have really dry skin and lips, but I'd rather deal with that than the constant breakouts.
Actually, your mom was right about the sun helping with acne. UV light does help, but of course, it's very harmful to the skin.

Oooh for me it was the "acne lines" from companies that had salicylic acid in every step of the skincare. The cleanser, the toner, the moisturizer and the sunscreen😵 that paired with that clarisonic brush and swimming in a chlorinated pool daily wrecked HAVOC on my poor face

For the scents thing, my mom always told me that if I mixed my scents it'd smell like an overly mixed bag of scents. She strongly encouraged me as a kid to have some scentless products and the rest all smell the same so I'd get one signature scent. I'm so thankful to her for that and for her refusing to let me do the thin brow trend, insisting it was a trend and that I plucking was for cleaning up your naturally shaped brows.

I was born in the mid 90s so I had a phase of being obsessed with seventeen magazine too. I was definitely in their target demographic in the 00s and early/mid 10s when they were really popular. I loved tying out their half-assed “high intensity” workouts and beauty “tips” that would overtly promised me a “flat abdomen” and a “flawless complexion.” Any advice unrelated to hair styling, fashion, or peer pressure was so bad bad back then.
They always recommended the most overly fragranced, overly color dyed skin cleansers from Neutrogena and Clean & Clear.
I know I was an impressionable age at the time but I’m still embarrassed I got fooled into expecting my fresh pimple would “heal overnight” if I dabbed dollar store toothpaste on it.
There was a Sept 2012 issue that promised we could clear zits & smooth skin texture overnight if we made a mask out of cooked oatmeal _(they didn’t even bother to specify to get plain oatmeal)_ then mixed in a raw whole egg + a ton of lemon juice. We were supposed to wear it on our face overnight and wash it off in the morning. Spoiler alert: it didn’t work. I’m reading the magazine right now (I keep nostalgic items) and their explanation was the oatmeal antioxidants will bring down swelling, the acidity of the lemon will “kill bacteria inside of the pores” & the vitamin e in the egg will “tighten skin” making it appear smoother.
What’s more horrifying is that they said it’s fine to keep using the same concoction every night for a whole week straight as long as we stored it in the fridge. I feel like a leaving an uncooked egg in the fridge for week in a jar with no freaking skincare preservatives is a disaster waiting to happen.
In their March 2012 issue they celebrated using a exfoliating facial scrub that is “tough enough” to get “all the grime” out of your pores. They also insinuate not following the tips “may sabotage your skin”. Dear goodness.
Silver lining is that even back then Seventeen recommended everyone should at least try to find a sunscreen that works for their skin type and skin color. They also emphasized that we should use fake/spray tan because our risk of skin cancer would increase a lot if we used UV beds or oiled ourselves up and sunbathed
No Seventeen skincare tip I got was as shitty as when i trusted Michelle Phan and used cat litter as a face mask in 09

    • @maenad1231
      @maenad1231 Рік тому +3

I’m now flipping through a bunch of their old mags for nostalgia and I’m realizing how problematic they would be today. On the front cover of their June/July 2010 cover they have huge text saying “Get your best bikini body: the ultimate secret to flat abs!” Below that they advertise their article that tells us to avoid using the “cancerous” drug called pot because smoking it can make you become “fat and ugly”. BTW in the same issue on a different page they put in a promotional ad for a show called “HUGE”. Which was a ABC a show about a fat teenage girl whose forced to go to fat camp by her rich gym-chain owner parents. The whole time shes at the camp she intentionally tries to not lose weight in protest of her being forced to be there and she speaks out against anyone who tries to make her feel like she should dislike her body or herself just because she’s fat.
I don’t know if I realized how hypocritical Seventeen magazine was when I was younger -perhaps I did but just let it go because all the issues that promised workouts for a slimmer waist usually let us easily win a free lipgloss or nail polish for them or something else like that.

"be aware that these things are trends" is such an important message! i love to take care of my appearance and I think a good way to do it is exactly what you described: highlight the features you like. my look is always "me, but better". for example, i blow dry my hair in a way that is similar to my natural waves, but less frizzy and more voluminous. i pluck my brows very close to their natural shape. i wear eyeliner in a way that enhances the shape my eyes already have. conversely, I leave my lips alone, because if I try to make them look bigger, I won't look like me

I am sad for my little self but I am thankful that we made progress in skin education and protection and above all that I have not developed skin cancer. My skincare routine from 2005 and for several years was NOT to wash my face accept from when I shower and then only with water. Unless I had makeup on which needed to be removed (which I seldom use) and I never use foundation because it would totally mess up my skin. I didn't have any issues with my face and noticed whenever I washed it the skin would first feet tight and then got completely out of balance with pimples as a result. Not washing it was actually a better choice than the horrible formulas of face cleaners that was out there back then and from which I had really bad experiences. I believe this has saved my face 😅 Now there are more mild products to be found which I use (maybe there were then too but they were not marketed the same way and nothing I knew about). Also the reactions from products were always dismissed with the "it's proof of the product working, it's the old toxins coming out now thanks to the product" putting the blame of breakouts on me or "if it feels it's working".

Not sure if it was the 90s or 2000s, but boy that Clean&Clear toner that was almost like something I could put in a shot glass, and the Eskinol toners that had those micrograins of what is like solid alum for the underarm (yep, I happened to crunch into some - please do not ask how it happened lol, and it tasted like alum).
They were stinging and I thought they worked well (and I had clear skin so I thought it was okay), but the after a week, there was redness and irritation, and the "tight-face" feel was too uncomfortable to deal with.
Also, a certain brand of alcohol-laden toner + tea tree oil made me think I was allergic to it as I broke out and had welts on my face and neck after one application. Steered clear from it since, but when I discovered a serum formulated with tea tree oil around late 2010s and used it, huh, I didn't break out. Maybe formulation is the thing there among other factors?
Now, I use Heimish balm (I dunno but it works for me as a single cleanse), Thayers witch hazel toner, a niacinamide + Vit C serum, a basic moisturiser (with hyaluronic acid + ceramides), and sunscreen for morning (and yep, reapplying as taught by skintellectuals of this era) and a thicker occlusive moisturiser (using it as a leave-on mask) at night.
Skin's pretty okay, but I can see some wrinkles forming (aging is a thing haha); would love to get a trip to the dermatologist for a consult and recommendations for a gentle exfoliant and probably get me started on retinoids.
Thank goodness for research on skincare ingredients and peeps like yourself Cassandra for getting that info across.

*When I went away to college back in 1993 my mom bought me a bunch of Bath and Body Works bath gels, but I had to give them away to my suite mates, because it gave me headaches. It was after that experience that I started getting into aromatherapy with natural essential oils instead of so much artificial fragrance.*

I have been doing an experiment this week
I've been having problem sleeping since i've quit prescription sleeping pills
I've been having 5am, accidental all nighters. so i grabbed my phone and put yputube to entertain myself, video of choice: Cass. Result: started to fall asleep inmedeatly
so, whenever i had sleep problems i put cassandra's videos and started to get sleepy. Yet when i played other videos, i didn't
When i can't sleep i put cass' videos and start to get sleepy, as soon as my lids start to feel heavy i leave my phone and bAM great sleep
I haven't seen the sunrise without my consent this last week and it's all thanks to funny, caffeinated, crazy cat lady cass, our acne big sis 🤘🏼

I think we’ll look back at Niacinamide being in EVERYTHING and realize it was a mistake. I’ve already developed a sensitivity to it, and when it’s in every step of people’s routines from cleanser to SPF to now even makeup- it’s too much!

I would have been more impressed of your St Ive discussion if you had done more research. I want to double click on the clean & clear sets, those destroyed my skin especially those moisturizers with salicylic acid/benzoyl peroxide and no sunscreen 😬😬😬💀💀💀

I have actually bought a few things over the last few weeks with fragrances and some of the fragrances do smelly very nice but I bought a beard oil and that specific one irritated the heck out of my skin and I literally felt the fragrance on my skin and it was a weird experience. Even some detergents when I smell them or go down the detergent aisle it literally stops me from breathing and just irritates my nose or something where my body just stops breathing it’s weird especially very strong fragrances.

I think our fascination with plants, and yes even the ones we eat, and desire to utilize them for beauty is a tale as old as time. We have done it since as long as humanity existed, many knowledges were lost and many were acquired too. I heard a lot of the witches who were witch hunted were local healers or midwives who had a lot of these knowledge, so perhaps the current west climate regarding botanical knowledge has something to do with that history. But since those fascinatio and desires don't go away, which is why all those food diy tricks existed and why currently the west has become more openly intrigued and obsessed with east's traditional medicinal and food based or inspired skincare I think.

My 2000s skincare were cucumber face masks, egg yolk face masks, milk face masks (all for after sun care), Banana Boat (their after sun gels and banana body lotion which my mom adored and I did not lol), Vaseline jelly and body lotions, and Etude House Moistfull Collagen Cream (back when it came in a glass container, who here remebers that?). Missed the sunscreen but at least I wore hats and did after sun care 🤣☠🙏
