That elm looks like it might be eligible for a healthy trunk chop right above that first little branch! Clip and grow!

Really liking the vigor in that Buckthorn. Great to see green head to toe. My success has been spotty with them. Dropping branches for no good reason. At least to my way of thinking! Great to see yours flourishing.

Just a suggestion. If you really want the trees to thicken up, just pull them out and slip pot them into a pot twice the size with a more organic soil. They won't look like "regular" bonsai for a year or two, but I think the results will be worth it.

I have the same experience on willows, Nigel. Every winter pruning fails

Do you have your willow sitting in water? That should help it out a lot. Mine is in the water fall with a plenum and soil and water and lasts all winter long, 2 winters, as long as I have the water in it and the air stone in the bottom of the plenum to keep the water from being stagnant. Just a thought.

i read that the purple can be from increased sunlight. it might just be that that lemon tree is a little more sensitive to sunlight after winter. but it says its not a bad thing, and natural for some citrus trees. it can also mean a phosphoric deficiency. or "ferric" could be a combination. but i love your lemon trees. but i bet it is just the sunlight, makes sense.

Purple growth means it's not Citrus but some variety of Citrus reticulata, probably Clementine, they do leaf out darker under the sunlight and then getting green. You can also tell it's not a Citrus limon by how the leaves are shaped. They also grow and mature faster than lemon trees.

I almost feel sorry for that Chinese elm and I agree on ugly s-shape trunks. Still be interesting if you can somehow make it decent in future - if noting else it can be a source of elm cuttings 😉

HI Nigel, I know you like your weird tree species and I wanted to suggest to you to maybe try and get your hands on a Paulownia tree, I have one that's been in training for 2 years now and im pretty confident they can be trained into quite nice bonsai, mine has smaller leaves than your norway maple already and they have amazing flowers in spring.
And I was wondering how your giant sequoia are doing? They've inspired me to get one aswell, I am surprised by how much root you can cut off from them without damaging them.
