Having just finished Mass Effect and walking into Mass Effect 2 and seeing my Shepard in all her glory, knowing what we had been through in Mass Effect 1... it's an amazing feeling. More so than I can imagine Mass Effect 2 would have been without the first one.
i hate when people say "should i skip mass effect 1 and go straight to 2". hell no! you need to experience all 3 games. the story is what you make of it. if you just jump into the 2nd game the background story is fixed into whatever bioware decided. you need to play mass effect 1 to create your own story throughout the games.
+Mark FR Yeah man, I really don't understand those people....some people just jump into games without playing the previous ones, they just start playing witcher 3, mass effect 3 or DAI...I mean, HOW CAN YOU DO THAT?
+hahaha - agreed. when DAI came out i refused to play it until i played the first 2 games first ( i was late to the party with dragon age, first time i played origins was december 2014, even though i heard amazing things about it for years, turned out to be my favourite rpg ever). i'm glad i did, because inquisition is 1000x better when you played the original games first.

+Geoff Keslowski Just because YOU had no crashes, glitches, or bugs doesn't mean other people didn't, and is still a problem worth mentioning. There is no such thing as a perfect game, regardless of how much we may love them it simply doesn't exist. 9.6 sounds fair to me.
I played mass effect 2 first, because I didn't have a necessary console at the time ME1 came out. In fact I got mass effect 2 because Dragon Age: Origins was the first Bioware game I played and I wanted more. But as someone who did play the sequel first, I think it can be a con. What I mean by this is that at the time of release not enough steps are taken to truly catch you up on the events of the first game. Mass effect 2 has had by far the best sales of the trilogy, so it isn't unreasonable to assume that a lot of people played 2 first. Especially considering that the first game wasn't even on PS3 when 2 came out. So actually I think that IGN does have a valid concern. I would have phrased it as "difficult for series newcomers" rather than "overly referential" but the same effect is there.

This game is THE BEST in whole trilogy. Overall story in this one might not seem so deep and polished, but the method of presentation and dynamic twist it was given is indeed - incredible. Atmosphere in this game can not be compared with 1st and 3rd Mass Effects for following reasons: 1) Staging. (Pay attention to it, because staging in this mass effect game remind me of soap opera, it is that great, better then in first and third combined) 2) Illumination (It is has best illumination of cutscenes/character/events/action sequence, level of such skill cam be compared with the most atmospheric films in history of cinematography, such as Alien, Lord of the Ring etc ...) 3) Atmosphere (It is outstanding, I've never thought that there is a game with more depth atmosphere then Super Metroid/Metroid Echoes/Dark Souls/Shadow of the Colosus before I've tried this one) 4) Fast phase and extremely well delivered dialogues/voice acting (As always, Bioware proves that it is the best in voice acting and dialogues delivery apartment) 5) Dynamic and story driven events (Do you know how DIFFICULT it is to combine such action and story in one beautiful sequence? No, you don't, so far this is the best I've seen in gaming) 6) Easy but atmosphere driven gameplay (Yes, many may complain about "how easy the system is" since Dragon Age Origins release, but such intense, easy and refreshing gameplay creates more immersion in whole picture rather in a lvl segment) 7) Dialog/consequence variation (Branching of dialogue and change in atmosphere is astounding, every dialogue variation brings change to the exact character/even. thus creating new ways of interpretation and immersion, although consequences are not that brightly delivered as one would wished them to be, but still, its better then in Mass Effect 3) I could continue writing about it for hour, but believe me, I tell you this for a good reason, Mass Effect 2 is THE BEST game in whole trilogy. p.s. I've finished Mass Effect 1 - 4 times, Mass Effect 2 - 11 times and Mass Effect 3 - 2 times, my point of view is not unfounded
While I do agree with most of your points, I still have Mass Effect 1 to be the best of the trilogy. Atmosphere in ME1 is the best, simply because the music (Vigil, spectre induction, main theme, virmire ride, noveria etc etc), the villains (Saren, sovereign) and the nihilistic/ lovecraftian theme covering this game is outstanding. It also emphasized exploration to a great extent, while ME2 was mostly combat combat combat. Story/plot, come on, its horrible in Mass Effect 2. The only redeemning factor is that the squadmate acquisition and loyality missions quarantire themselves well enough from the main storyline. ME1 had one of the best stories/plots I've seen in gaming. All while making it feel incredibly intense and be cohesive. Finished ME1 - 6 times, ME2 - 3 times, ME3 - 3 times.
***** Because suicide missions aren't cliche. And the best way to execute them is to have the characters bullrush the thing. And above all they are less cliche than ME1's plot? Have you really seen that many stories involding god-like robot beings, countless cycles and their interference in galactic civilizations? Its one thing to say " I don't like ME1 story I like ME2" and get up and leave, but you're layign down discussions for cliches and stuff, oh boy, ME2 is the very definition of cliche.
***** I'm talking to a person right now who tells me the mass effect 1 story is more cliche than the old "we gun go on a suicide mission boyz". I'm sorry but I can't understand you.
Even though Mass Effect 1 had some technical issues, I still believe that Mass Effect 1 was a very good game. Mass Effect 2 was better, and Mass Effect 3 was just as good. I may be a major recipient of flame when I say this but who cares about Mass Effect 3's ending? It may have disappointed some fans, but BioWare did a really good job. Plus, they released a free Director's Cut DLC to emphasize on the choices you made in the series. Another thing that I hate is that people started calling BioWare "sellouts" because they gave the public something they asked for, a clear explanation for the ending as far as the Director's Cut DLC. Sure they had some press issues but they released a piece of quality content, and I don't give a f**k about the ending.
If you aren't aware of the original endings they had intended to go with and why they scrapped it you might be a bit more upset. The search terms are "mass effect 3 dark energy ending." I'll give you the skinny of it. Remember how the Quarians kept mentioning dark energy in ME2? Well basically, dark energy kept popping up more because the races of the galaxy were using biotics (which apparently makes dark energy happen I guess) and this was causing the universe to go through entropy faster. The Reapers (who are immortal) have more stake in the universe than the organics would appear and harvest the sentient species that were using biotics to save the universe and help reverse the entropy through their Reaper tech. It still would have been three choices in the end like what we got, but it would be a little different. The reason the ending was scrapped was because it was leaked and EA told Bioware to make a new ending. I agree with you though, Bioware didn't sell out. EA just sucks.
To be honest, i prefered the long elevator rides over bland loading screens. Also, the Mako missions, even though they were repetitive and had bad controls, were still alot of fun. They are 100 times better than that boring mining mini-game. I think this could have been a great element if they reworked the controls and level design.
I just started this series a few weeks ago. I'm about 10-11 hours into the second one right now and it's easily one of my top 10 favorite games (and series). And I've been a gamer for more than 20 years.
I've played this game when it came out, and I've played it again this week, and it changes so much if you have changed as well, plus if you take the tame to really get in all the little things on the trilogy you get the most unbelievable gaming experience ever, this is not incredible, it's a masterpiece...
Anyone else excited as I am to know that the entire Mass Effect Trilogy will be on the Xbox One and PS4 in a couple months? (Even though I'm wondering how ME4 will be and how it turns out or what ever it's being called nowadays) ME2 was my all time favourite game of 2010 and still is today. I'll be honest, when I saw the trailer for the first game I wasn't entirely hooked on it. Yeah it was a really good experience and all but after playing ME2 I was sold that this is an epic trilogy and game in general. ME3 was good to, but not as good.
Got done playing this game for the first time and the fucking end mission pissed me off in a good way :(,this game was fantastic even the sidequests are awesome ,thank you bioware.
side quests are very important since they make the world feel bigger and real, since there are people places and things that carry on whether you're there or not. Unlike games like gears of war where the world feels like a movie set prop and there is nothing to save.
I'M NEW TO THE SERIES: I want to use a biotic class, should I pick Adept or Vanguard? What's the pros and cons of each? I am leaning towards Vanguard though...
TheIntergalacticN Agreed, I've recently realized that ME2 is extremely glitchy. Have played through it like three or four times and there is always some major glitch that affects a scripted event or other.
I hate to nit-pick, but anyone else hate that they switched to ammunition? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a challenge - I'm a Souls gamer - but I liked being able to use my favorite weapons often, rather than have to switch out because I was low or empty with a certain gun. If it weren't for biotics, I would have almost given up in the beginning. I know, this is a petty complaint, but a complaint nonetheless
I didn't mind. If anything found biotics less useful because on hardcore and insanity after the tutorial area Every mook has shields, or armor, or biotic barriers. And biotics do nothing to defences except for doing a tiny amount of damage, reave is different.
golbezchaoslord Allow me to explain about the biotics - I just straight up like the force-like power. Vanguard in particular is fun to play by charging into the fray with shotgun in hand... I love an up-close and personal fight. But the ammunition restriction is less than accommodating to that kind of play - especially if you're trigger-happy. Just my opinion, but if they'd kept the overheat system or given larger ammo reserves, I would've enjoyed the game quite a bit more
Personally, while playing me1 i found myself using the same weapons over and over again (Mainly the Assault rifle and the Shotgun) simply because they never ran out of ammunition which at some point began to bore me (Sniper was awful and the pistol-mehh). Having ammunition brought to the scene i not only found myself experimenting with basically all the weapons (which were all good) but also had to use them wisely. Saving a single rocket could change the course of your next encounter with the enemies. In this case i felt the need to pay close attention to my weapons and how i should use them effectively whereas in the past having infinite ammo, i went in each battle with the same mindset which as i mentioned before, began to bore me. At this point this is all opinionated, yours and mine... i just wanted to share my thoughts and experience. :)
Yahiko SH I understand the viewpoint, but at the same time, you had to watch your heat levels in ME1, or give your enemies an opening while you either wait for the overheat to go down or switch weapons. Granted, this is only a problem if you're getting flanked or don't know how to use cover effectively, but the same can be said of reloading and swapping in ME2 and 3. As for my own humble opinion, I liked infinite ammunition mainly because I have a bit of an itchy trigger finger, and tend to use more ammo than necessary. Also, I actually liked the sniper rifles in ME1, because they required some skill to use effectively. But as you said, it's all according to personal opinion at this point
@MrDiamondRockstar To get everything in the game it will take you about 60ish hours. Make sure you talk to your team (in the ship) constantly through out the game.
It's a negativity that the game references the first game? LOL. If you're a new player to a series and start halfway through then you're not suppose to know everything that's going on because it's your own fault for not picking up the first game.
I got stuck in the environment a few times, the series is pretty popular on the Xbox 360, it's ok. The Xbox 360 version is basically the PC version at 720p and 30fps and maximum settings. Bioshock Infinite was one review where they called out the PC version as being the best.
Topgamer357 The 360 can't display 720p? What do you mean? Faster load times on PC sounds good, I'd recommend playing the entire Mass Effect trilogy on PC like I did but they sold very well on the 360.
It's not true 720p native. It's up scaled to 720p to make it look better. If you look at up scaled 720p next to 720p native you can tell they're not the same.
I haven't played either Mass Effect 1 or 2. However i have heard that Mass Effect 1 had a bunch of issues that the second doesn't. Can I just get the second game?
How? I was talking about in the final mission if you don't do some ship upgrades, assign the right people to do certain jobs such as tech expert or team leader, if you didn't get those upgrades or put the right people on the job someone may die because of it.
Like can I import the Mass Effect one motion comic choices into my mass effect to Shepard even though I've beaten it and then replay using New Game plus and everything from the comic and my ME 2 stats carry over? Please help me.
Is it worth it to buy this game on the Xbox 360 so I can import my Mass Effect 1 savefile or should I just go with the PS3 version which includes all the extra content?
just wandering i have played any of these games but i really would like to but i'm a bit sided in buying 3 games do i have to play them all to understand the story?
do they have hours and hours of dialogue like the first?...i have to be honest i didnt really like the 1st, it felt too slow but ive heard the gameplay and everything was really improved so i think ill check it out, especially now the price is dropped :) one more thing, ps3 or 360?
Actually I take that back, I have two complaints. I was stuck in the background very often, maybe 30 times in my first playthrough. The game does not like you using powers near something that moves, or if you bump into something. I got stuck and had to reload multiple times in my first playthrough in ME2.
Is it a bad thing that I'm 6 years late with this game? (I'm loving the hell out of it tho).
Hell no.

ME1: Good setup for the trilogy
ME2: Best standalone game in the trilogy
ME3:Best DLC in the trilogy
I still feel the "overly referential" minus is idiotic though.......
Yeah, a sequel is supposed to be referential.
They had to come with at least one thing to include as a minus. Can you think of anything else? I sure as hell can't! This game is a mastapeece :D
LOL. Best DLC. 😂😂

Bioshock
Counter-strike
Red Dead Redemption
Warcraft III / Starcraft II
Uncharted 2
The Last of Us

+Thomas Lorentzen For me the whole series are the best video games but everyone has of course their opinion ^^
Thumbs up if you never had a casualty during The Suicide Mission.
I had two on my first playthrough Jacob and Garrus. Every other playthrough since then, I made sure nobody dies on the suicide mission.
I had Thane, Jack, and Legion die on my first playthrough, then just Legion.....
Mass Effect 2 FREE ON ORIGIN!!!! GO GO GO!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! *SPREAD THE WORD!*
Infametheus I was playing and Tali died on it so I reloaded a save 2 hours prior so I didn't lose her

In terms of new IPs that came out this generation Mass Effect 2 is the best:
1. Mass Effect 2
2. The Last of Us
3. Batman: Arkham City
4. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
5. Red Dead Redemption
6. Bioshock
7. Assassins Creed 2
8. The Walking Dead by Telltales
9. Gears of War
10. Dead Space
Replace last of us and mass effect with uncharted 2 on third the list would be perfect

1) Staging. (Pay attention to it, because staging in this mass effect game remind me of soap opera, it is that great, better then in first and third combined)
2) Illumination (It is has best illumination of cutscenes/character/events/action sequence, level of such skill cam be compared with the most atmospheric films in history of cinematography, such as Alien, Lord of the Ring etc ...)
3) Atmosphere (It is outstanding, I've never thought that there is a game with more depth atmosphere then Super Metroid/Metroid Echoes/Dark Souls/Shadow of the Colosus before I've tried this one)
4) Fast phase and extremely well delivered dialogues/voice acting (As always, Bioware proves that it is the best in voice acting and dialogues delivery apartment)
5) Dynamic and story driven events (Do you know how DIFFICULT it is to combine such action and story in one beautiful sequence? No, you don't, so far this is the best I've seen in gaming)
6) Easy but atmosphere driven gameplay (Yes, many may complain about "how easy the system is" since Dragon Age Origins release, but such intense, easy and refreshing gameplay creates more immersion in whole picture rather in a lvl segment)
7) Dialog/consequence variation (Branching of dialogue and change in atmosphere is astounding, every dialogue variation brings change to the exact character/even. thus creating new ways of interpretation and immersion, although consequences are not that brightly delivered as one would wished them to be, but still, its better then in Mass Effect 3)
I could continue writing about it for hour, but believe me, I tell you this for a good reason, Mass Effect 2 is THE BEST game in whole trilogy.
***** Rouge kind of personality but on a somewhat epic scale, which is why I like it
***** I'm talking to a person right now who tells me the mass effect 1 story is more cliche than the old "we gun go on a suicide mission boyz". I'm sorry but I can't understand you.
***** Ok.
Alongside Red Dead Redemption and Dark Souls this is the best game of the 7th console generation.
I know this comment is 2 years old but I couldn't agree more these are the 3 best games of the 7th generation
hey i need some help if i buy mass effect 2. will i miss the sory cuzz i droppped mass effect 1 after half way through?
I just finished this game in 2021 and I absolutely love it
On to Mass effect 3?
To be honest, i prefered the long elevator rides over bland loading screens. Also, the Mako missions, even though they were repetitive and had bad controls, were still alot of fun. They are 100 times better than that boring mining mini-game. I think this could have been a great element if they reworked the controls and level design.
2024 still playing this game
@SweetSinFZ in load there is a switch career button so your saves are kept separate, click change career and you can get those old saves
I just started this series a few weeks ago. I'm about 10-11 hours into the second one right now and it's easily one of my top 10 favorite games (and series). And I've been a gamer for more than 20 years.
Mass Effect 2 is the best game ever.
Finally Backwards Compatible, along with Mass Effect 1 and 3.
Just replayed the trilogy on x1, truly nothing like it.
amen to that
4 years later from your comment they remade the whole series!! And it's amazing!
@@thedonofthsht76-58 bought it day one.
should i get ME3 or play the first two games first? i don't know if i'm gonna like playing these type of games
You should ignore the first three games and jump into the 4th one 👍
@@fervcorsica3358 ok thx, i'll start with andromeda first 👍
Mass effect 2 is a masterpiece one of the greatest games of all time the greatest for me
Playing this for the first time on PS4, it has definitely held up. Fantastic game
I've played this game when it came out, and I've played it again this week, and it changes so much if you have changed as well, plus if you take the tame to really get in all the little things on the trilogy you get the most unbelievable gaming experience ever, this is not incredible, it's a masterpiece...
@MrDiamondRockstar You're looking at about 30 hours total if you do ALL the recruitment and loyalty missions
Free on origin right now
CautionCU I just got it
I'M NEW TO THE SERIES: I want to use a biotic class, should I pick Adept or Vanguard? What's the pros and cons of each? I am leaning towards Vanguard though...
If it wasn't for the glitches, I'd consider this game to be perfect.
TheIntergalacticN Agreed, I've recently realized that ME2 is extremely glitchy. Have played through it like three or four times and there is always some major glitch that affects a scripted event or other.
TheIntergalacticN Well there is the at times horrendous voiuce acting and bad combat
Anyone watching in 2022 ?
me
I hate to nit-pick, but anyone else hate that they switched to ammunition? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a challenge - I'm a Souls gamer - but I liked being able to use my favorite weapons often, rather than have to switch out because I was low or empty with a certain gun. If it weren't for biotics, I would have almost given up in the beginning. I know, this is a petty complaint, but a complaint nonetheless
I didn't mind. If anything found biotics less useful because on hardcore and insanity after the tutorial area
Every mook has shields, or armor, or biotic barriers.
But as you said, it's all according to personal opinion at this point
for sure man... i respect that... loved me1 btw :)
Just finished ME1 really looking forward to starting it !
This reason alone is why you should play this game, GRUNT!
This game sounds really good, bought it a few days ago, looking forward to getting into it
DID YOU END UP PLAYING IT?! LOL
This game is the best ever made ; unique experience and far more better than ME3
Xavier MOLLY For me Mass Effect 3 was a boring pile of shit.
Xavier MOLLY meh, not the best, the combat is pretty shit and voice acting can get extremely horrendous.
To each his own, imo ME3 is the best in the trilogy.
@MrDiamondRockstar To get everything in the game it will take you about 60ish hours. Make sure you talk to your team (in the ship) constantly through out the game.
I'm only here because of PlayStation Plus.
yup
Same
I am too
+ThaBalla79™ If you will like the story and gameplay you should really buy the others too. It´s really worth it ^^
Martin1538|Nr.1 Mass Effect Fan I will.. I love the series.
9.6? Cmon ign it deserves more than that..
9.6 is a very good score for the issues that he mentioned
I loved the tone of this game
Haven't played any mass effect and wouldent mind to try it. is it kind of like Gears of war in the way of cover system and stuff like that?
ORIGIN IS GIVING THIS GAME FOR FREE!!!!!!
It's a negativity that the game references the first game? LOL. If you're a new player to a series and start halfway through then you're not suppose to know everything that's going on because it's your own fault for not picking up the first game.
Favorite game ever created
There is the extended cut though right? That helps.
I hated mass effect 1 will I like this one?
Same here..i just played 1 for like 6 hours but its just too old and shitty..the entire trilogy just cost me 4.90$ on PSN at least.
rfp415 yeah it feels too primitive
Camman6972 i could see myself loving it 5 maybe even 3 years ago.
rfp415 Yeah
Camman6972 Didn't think it was possible to dislike Mass Effect 1
9.6 is insult of this game
Overly referential? Really IGN? This game is perfect for f*ck sake. I'd give it a 10/10. This game is a masterpiece.
Happy 10th birthday, ME2
and gears 3 of course!
Came here after that shitfest andromeda
Glen lol same
why do they review this using a xbox, PC is the far better version, none of these technical errors happen on PC.
I got stuck in the environment a few times, the series is pretty popular on the Xbox 360, it's ok.
The Xbox 360 version is basically the PC version at 720p and 30fps and maximum settings. Bioshock Infinite was one review where they called out the PC version as being the best.
***** The 360 can't display 720p? And this doesn't matter but the load time are ridiculously faster on pc on all games if you have great hardware.
Topgamer357
The 360 can't display 720p? What do you mean?
Faster load times on PC sounds good, I'd recommend playing the entire Mass Effect trilogy on PC like I did but they sold very well on the 360.
It's not true 720p native. It's up scaled to 720p to make it look better. If you look at up scaled 720p next to 720p native you can tell they're not the same.
Pretty sure all three Mass Effect games run at native 720p on the 360/PS3.
how do you zoom with the sniper?
Connor Kenway left trigger
Vanguard sucks
you suck
its complete ass the submachine guns are fucking pistols i have one through nine hours of the game im starting over and using solider
Alex Yanakiev when do u get that bous talent u get to choose
Prodigy396 vanguard with sniper rifle and reave kicks ass
Vanguard is the most overused class in ME.
What about the quest system not updating you on your progress in your missions, or separating the list of missions from side missions.
I haven't played either Mass Effect 1 or 2. However i have heard that Mass Effect 1 had a bunch of issues that the second doesn't. Can I just get the second game?
UA-cam after 11 years...M.E L.E is out let's recommend this video 😃
Does the wershion from origin come with dlc
How? I was talking about in the final mission if you don't do some ship upgrades, assign the right people to do certain jobs such as tech expert or team leader, if you didn't get those upgrades or put the right people on the job someone may die because of it.
Witch class has the blue burst thing were he goes flying into enemies?
Like can I import the Mass Effect one motion comic choices into my mass effect to Shepard even though I've beaten it and then replay using New Game plus and everything from the comic and my ME 2 stats carry over? Please help me.
Im about to start the Mass Effect series should I start with the 1st or the 2nd... I have seen reviews and it seems like ME1 has alot more bugs
Is it worth it to buy this game on the Xbox 360 so I can import my Mass Effect 1 savefile or should I just go with the PS3 version which includes all the extra content?
@miclovin222 You mean Mass Effect 3 right? 2's ending was amazing.
just wandering i have played any of these games but i really would like to but i'm a bit sided in buying 3 games do i have to play them all to understand the story?
do i have to play the first mass effect to get the story? i have ps3 so i cant get the first but im thinking of getting the 2nd and 3rd one
2020 and still no remaster :'(
I was planning on buying all 3 of the games but I can't find the first for ps3? was it even released for the ps3?
do they have hours and hours of dialogue like the first?...i have to be honest i didnt really like the 1st, it felt too slow but ive heard the gameplay and everything was really improved so i think ill check it out, especially now the price is dropped :)
one more thing, ps3 or 360?
9 years baby... going strong
How do you get into ME1, I've tried so many times. I don't get the story and the gameplay
Can someone please answer this question: Can I import my decisions in the Mass Effect motion comic to a New Game Plus save in Mass Effect 2?
is the omega DLC to mass effect 3 out yet?
Actually I take that back, I have two complaints. I was stuck in the background very often, maybe 30 times in my first playthrough. The game does not like you using powers near something that moves, or if you bump into something. I got stuck and had to reload multiple times in my first playthrough in ME2.
