Gracias a canciones como "Maybellene" (1955), "Roll Over Beethoven" (1956), "Rock and Roll Music" (1957) y "Johnny B. Goode" (1958), Berry redefinió los elementos del rhythm and blues.[4]
In 1980 I was on a Navy ship doing a training cruise, and we stopped in Seattle for a few days. I went out into the town and just stumbled into the Bumbershoot festival. While walking around I saw there was a free concert with Chuck Berry opening. I can't remember who the main act was, but I remember I didn't like them. There were about 30 people in the audience, but Mr. Berry put on a show like there were 10000! I was in the front row, very appreciative, and Mr. Berry made it plain to me he appreciated me. As he finished his set people were starting in. I just couldn't believe they would not want to see Chuck Berry. I stayed for about one minute of the next band, then got up and left. No better in person then on the radio. If it had been one of the other days I might have seen Emmylou Harris, or Etta James.
Now THAT's what I call talent! Chuck was so, so good at his presentation. I can't imagine how this must have been viewed in late 50's racist America! It's a wonder he wasn't shot! Absolutely fantastic!!
The greatest line in music, "I saw her getting into a coffee colored Cadillac" We all know what the color of coffee is, but to each one of us it is different, example if you drink your coffee with or without cream, and then how much cream will give you a different coffee colored Cadillac. Decades ago in a Psych glass I took in Grad school we tested this theory with a 125 students for their definition of a coffee color Cadillac, only 2 of 125 agreed on the same color, and in a follow up question all the male students who participated when asked to describe Nadine had the lady with a very attractive derriere! The power of words and the genius of Chuck Berry, with out him, Little Richard, Fats Domino, and James Brown my childhood through early adulthood would have been so boring! Thank you Chuck!

@64downtown You've got a great memory. It was recorded in Sydney, and luckily it was a clear night. Recorded on an old National VCR, though at the time it was only 6 years old. It lasted years - i've actually still got it, and it still works well. Thank you - Merry X !!
Oh, yes, we ALL love Chuck!! :) I imagine it's age related, heck i'm a good deal younger yet have difficulty some days getting out of bed !! Many thanks! Cheers, :)
I read Bill Graham's book. Graham asked if he wanted a check or cash the first time he played the Fillmore. Berry gave him a look that said "Are you serious?" So Graham wrote out a check, had Berry sign it and then Graham slid him the cash. I think after many bad experiences with promoters early in his career he always demanded cash. BTW, fantastic book.
@karod77 He travels solo and uses whichever musos are available. Very funny story when he toured Russia some years ago - demanded to be paid cash, before going on stage !! Think it was Russia,,, Thank you !! :)
I'm trying to figure out when Chuck lost it... he still had rhythm and tonality in this video, but in recent videos starting in 2010 ish he has lost his ability to sing melodies, instead grunting the lyrics, and plays in the wrong key, only having flashes of sounding good. Totally understandable considering his age; I still love him.
Pure Talent !!! He's Singing like a Telling Story...god of Rock and Roll...
True, he's making that guitar talk. Amazing!
A true Rock God! Chuck Berry was an original, one of a kind GREAT! I just enjoy watching him perform. ❤
