    Have never commented on UA-cam content until now. Wanted to let you know how much this episode meant to me. My father has recently passed and as a result, I have come to appreciate the videos you do with your Dad even more. This was was especially meaningful, since my father, who was a menswear buyer and eventual Restaurateur would always drink Sambuca. He said it reminded him of his buying trips to Europe and Italy specifically. It made my laugh when you spoke of your Uncle and the coffee bean, because that was always the way my Dad would drink it.
    If that wasn't enough, when you both did your wrist check, you were wearing the same model Must de Cartier Tank watch my father purchased in 1982 and had worn everyday since. I now wear that watch in memory of him and wanted to thank you for bringing back such wonderful memories.

    I like patina if it's my watch. If I "created" that patina. If that patina represents my life and all the good and bad stuff that happens in it. If that patina somehow tells my story. If it's not my watch, it's just a banged up old aka "vintage" watch I have no emotional attachment to.

    • @oxysoxos
      @oxysoxos 6 років тому +2

      I guess your point is as good as mine. It's a matter of perspective and perception. But apart from some technical risks that are always involved in buying used watches I simply prefer to start with a blank sheet and write my own story right from the beginning with a brand new watch that can last MY lifetime rather than paying good money on a "vintage" watch that has been worn by some strange dude who did who knows what wearing "my" watch. In my opinion, many of those collectors just sweet-talk themselves into believing they got something really special when it's actually just an outdated blemished watch. But again, I respect your point. It's all about enjoying watches. No matter if it's my way or your way.

    Of course they’re going to “love” patina even make a video about it. They only sell vintage watches , and most of them have patina. Well done Mr. Christian! In my opinion, I like patina to some extent. Some of the watches you have sold are borderline “damaged”!

    I've spent the last 20 yrs buying high end watches, designer jewelry and coins from the public, items with 'patina', in particular, watches, DO NOT command higher prices in the open market, the exact opposite is true. The more 'patina' the lower the value. Not my OPINION, my experience.

    I think I explained this before, but the gold does NOT patina. It's the other elements of the alloy (Ni, Cu, Ag, Zn) which take a patina.

    love the attitude. price tags of things are only indicated by human beings. Different people look at things differently, if you can create a trend to let main stream accept your point of view and start appreciating chocolate brown patina over green saggy ones, it is an achievement in my opinion. props for you!

    Nice video. I love classic and vintage look. There is just something about a 1980s or 90s bmw, Benz, or caddy. Same thing goes for a simple and elegant timepiece. I have a nomos Orion 33 which I can tell that it will be a patina and will have a vintage look to it.

    I completely agree with you Christian. I am a sucker for patina to the point of getting a watch that ended up having a very damaged movement, but an amazing patina! I took the hit and love the watch anyway!

      Man... I don't want to be an asshole but that is idiotic... That's like buying a sandwhich with the insides all decomposing... to eat it you have to buy a the insides all over again. Unless it was really cheap. Then I'm on your side. The movement can be swapped.

      Andres De Moya i would compare it to wine or cheese. Some things do get better with age. It wasn’t hat expensive though. Just a movement swap

    Patina is the biggest meme in the watch community it’s just the effect of UV rays on on type of paint they used in the past, yes it can look attractive but it will not necessarily stay looking like that. The dial will continue to age and degrade as the years go on.

    I think when you can see age on things like watches it just adds to the soul of the item, a little like smartphones, it needs to have wear marks some places so you can see its being used, though not abused.

    What is your opinion on the Seagull 1963: a Chinese-made, manual-wind chronograph? Is it a great value prop (I'm hard pressed to find another mechanical chronograph under $500) or is it mass produced, uncultured and poorly-made?

    I had a friend who looked at my watch, bought the same watch, and yelled at me after it stopped "working" when he left it on the table for 2 days.... It's a damn automatic!

  • @c.w.9615

    This issue harps on the inevitable count down to our last days. Am I young enough to patina a new watch to that degree of beauty, or will I settle to buy the privilege? Here's the conclusion: the watch can span generations of blood lines; an individual will not. One who pays for patina, corrects the truth of their own mortality.

    • @MrJamesDuffy
      @MrJamesDuffy 6 років тому

      I remember volunteering at a retirement home and wondered if the smell on their breath on some of the folks with thick European accents was Sambuca, Ouzo, or just their medicine. Also, some families will allow kids to a single sip of sweeter liquors around the holidays; sometimes to pacify a rowdy child, sometimes just to see them react to the booze.

    I don't know but isn't "patina" one step before corrosion? Damage is damage any way you look at it. I'll keep buying perfect examples. There's a reason Jean Claude Biver only buys perfect examples of Patek Phillipe without any damage whatsoever, and most collectors do. And they know what they are doing.

    • @AndresDeMoya
      @AndresDeMoya 6 років тому +1

      Perfect is an expression. Or when was the last time you found a perfect thing? Still. Damage is damage. It shouldn't carry a premium. That is just wrong. Would you buy a used car with a rusted exterior for a premium price because of the rust?

    Gold is actually a nonreactive metal. The patina would be caused by some other metal reacted with air since this probably isn’t 22k or 24k gold.

    • @AndresDeMoya
      @AndresDeMoya 6 років тому

      I think it's gold plated. I once saw a Must de Cartier similar to that one which was also babied on a safe and it looked the same. But it was gold plated. Anyhow, it's damage. It's not something I would appreciate. If I sold someone a car with rust with a premium price and told them it was patina I would probably get a punch on the snot. I love imperfections but damage is damage.

    • @TheoandHarris
      @TheoandHarris  6 років тому

      VERY interesting!! And you’re right, that was gold plated but I have owned and seen many 1803 Day Dates in 18k that develop the same or similar patina!

    • @AndresDeMoya
      @AndresDeMoya 6 років тому +1

      That's because it isn't 100% gold. I think even 24k gold has some other metals like copper or zinc on it in minimum quantities. Or you would not be able to make solid shapes with it. Gold is really not that strong alone. But I may be wrong, don't quote me on it. If it turns a little greenish it has silver and if it turns a little blueish it has copper.

    • @Bteebz
      @Bteebz 6 років тому +1

      It is also why pure gold jewelry from ancient times still looks identical to how it would have looked thousands of years ago. One of the reasons gold is so valuable is because pure gold is highly nonreactive and resistant to the majority of chemical reactions, like the other noble metals, platinum, palladium, among others.

    Please stop bullshitting us about that Cartier. Vermeil = gold plated silver. The plating of this watch has just worn off. It is nothing but a worn down watch and there is no basis for a premium whatsoever.

    You know my opinion on patina, man. It is not for me unless it is perfectly even, light, and symmetric. I get the whole story of battle scars but I also like the idea that all the scars on my watches were earned by my own dumbshit experiences. That is how my dad and older brother treated their watches so I probably picked that up from them.
