I owned my '94 88 for 7 years from 43,000 miles to 115,000 miles...and these were my mileage numbers:
      17 / 18mpg - More City
      20 / 21mpg - Usually the Average

I remember never being able to accomplish 30mpg haha but always trying.

The Jeep's flashing computer just means it lost power and needs the time set. The false errors on it are almost always caused by bad solders, so if you know someone who knows what they're doing that's an easy fix. I just ripped mine out until I get it taken care of lol. Especially cool because the 5.9s can still go off-road and tow, unlike the later SRT8 models. Fantastic vehicle that'll pass anything but a gas station.

  • @aaronw8606

The 5.9L trans was beefed up, but still required an annual flush and filter change to keep it running. This is especially if you're out doing Jeep things on the trails and power-pulls on the streets. Kinda wish we hadn't sold ours. 275,000 on the original motor and still an absolute beast.

    Fun video.
For every day use, pretty hard to beat a 3800 Series II. There's still no other large, comfy sedan that gets that sort of mileage. It was always surprising about those big W bodies that if you go the speed limit or under, you can get right up on 30 MPG. Super impressive. Very reliable, simple and easy to fix when they need to be, parts are available everywhere.
That Grand Cherokee 5.9 is for sure the more interesting/rare vehicle of the 3.
But the 5th Avenue in that red color also holds a special place. My grandma had one years ago. Super comfy boat.
It was replaced with a 98 Grand Marquis eventually, which she really really loved.

The 90s V6 cruisers were so much more efficient than modern luxury cars. My buddy’s 97 Concorde gets up to 40 mpg. Meanwhile my grandma’s 2017 Lincoln MKZ averages 18 with a smaller engine.

Brendan: The Jeep 5.9's benefit greatly from bolt ons. The Mopar chip is supposedly worth something like 30 hp, and any good tune should be worth equal or better. Full 3" exhaust will net serious power, as will an intake and ported kegger or M1 manifold. There are 5.9's with heads/cam and bolt ons into the 13's. The automatic used in the 5.9L limited grand cherokee was the same as the one with the 5.9L gas engine dodge ram. It was a 46RE, difference is the started bolted on the opposite side on the grand cherokee vs the dodge ram. The 5.2 grand cherokees used a 44RE and it wasnt up to the task.
The big killer of the chrysler RE, RH transmissions was the thrust washers they used between the planet carrier and the sun shell. They wear out and it loosens the clearances and tolerances and the transmission would eat it self up, basic transmission fluid changes held off the inevitable for a while, if they would have used thrust bearings, it would have been a much stronger transmission

My old man had a Fifth Avenue. His was silver with grey velour seats. It rode very nicely, though it was under-powered and the 3-speed automatic robbed it of any lingering zippy-ness.
$1600 for that Oldsmobile is a steal. No, it's not an enthusiast's car, but take care of it and that 3.8L V-6 will run damn near forever.

My kid is learning to drive. I bought him a solid-but-banged-up ‘95 Accord: 4-door, automatic, comfy velour. Since he’s just 16 and still on a permit, I get to drive it a lot. It’s become my new favorite out of the family fleet. Almost ashamed to admit…

Granddad had the New Yorker that is a smooth ride, my coworker has the Oldsmobile for years now and refuses to get another car because he says it is too dependable and too good on gas for his hour-long commute for him to go to another car but I would have loved to have bought that jeep my dad had that engine in his ram van 2500 and it was powerful I can only imagine how it feels in that jeep with sunroof 10 speakers and leathers.... Great buy!

My mom had one of these and I'd love to see a follow up video. Like all MoPar products, it's love it and hate it deal.
Comfy, pleasant environment for long trips, powerful(ish), off-road capable, and decent looking. Paired with consistent electrical issues, built in money-suck repairs (the one that stands out for me was replacing the radiator because a plastic drain plug broke), super shitty assembly, bad paint (yours lived in a garage), inconsistent textile matching, and so on.

You guys teased me with the first 2 cars, the comfy Chrysler New Yorker-Fifth Avenue, and the Oldsmobile 88 Royale. I miss my 1991 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Elite, it shared a platform similar to the Lincoln Town Car of the time, had the standard V6 engine front wheel drive; depending upon the model you got you could have the LCD display and if 50th anniversary model had adjustable struts. Next time you come across an Oldsmobile 98 or 88 with great milage on it and in overall good condition you need to bring me along to see if I can get it.

All great cruisers, but let's face it, they're all 20+ years old. The ZJ is the obvious pick of the bunch, but i wouldn't expect to have it as my daily driver. Fine for the weekends and tinkering, maybe even lift it a couple inches, but as a daily driver i feel like you'd be dumping money into it faster than you would like.

Oh that Jeep brings back memories. I owned a 1997 GC Laredo in 2008 - bought it for £700! Drove like all Merican cars, that is to say bloody awful. BUT the stereo was incredible. Probably one of the best sound systems I've ever experienced in all the 53 cars I've owned. Sadly it failed the MOT spectacularly and I had to sell it for parts. Happy memories tho :)

I loved my 5.9 ZJ ... looked just like this one. Three problems I had with it - AWD viscous coupling was going out, so it would bind in tight turns. I had to rebuild the front diff (somebody else did the same and they overtightened the central shaft nut - took some doing to take off (working outside in early season snow - not fun). Spark plugs or ignition related problem at high RPM - felt like a miss on hot days. During the winter, it made it up the ski areas in style - nice torque, but so much heavier than the WJ that followed it. Incidentally the WJ's frames were co-engineered with Porsche to make the stronger and lighter (but they didn't have the 5.9).

Yep the Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 was the worlds fastest production SUV in the late 90s until the Mercedes ML55 AMG came out in 2000. Then in 2002 the Cadillac Escalade with the 6.0 V8 was the “most powerful production full size SUV in the world” but wasn’t the fastest overall.

The ZJs are so underrated with Jeep enthusiasts. I always loved the style and reliability of the XJs, but nowadays they are complete rust buckets and anything made of rubber under the hood basically needs to be replaced. The V8 Laredos are cool as heck too, I drove one or year, never have had a chance to drive one of these Limiteds but it looks like they've aged well.
