Early SN95s are definitely not ugly.
Calls this the ugliest Mustang. Tell me you’ve never seen a Mustang II without telling me you’ve never seen a Mustang II. 😂
Wasn't the Mustang ll just a Pinto with makeup on?
@@explodifier6021 the fox body Mustangs aren't bad looking, the early 90's models at least. It's just like it looks more like an economy car than a muscle car. Just my opinion.
@@asbjrnkvisle5831 yeah pretty much but it was still considered a mustang that was based on the ford pinto just to cope with fuel crisis of the 1970s.
Ya this title is a bunch of crap
@@explodifier6021 the fox body looks way better than the mustang ll, there’s no comparison
I have to disagree. This is the mustang that got me into mustangs growing up.
Same, and now own a 515WHP SN95 Cobra. People tease the looks of this generation all the time…almost like its the thing to say to make it seem like you’re cool to the other bros at cars & coffee. At the time, these were some of the best looking sports cars on the market. And they sold an a## load of them too. When the 99 restyle came out, I distinctly remember people hating on that too. SMH.
Same, yup and I owned one when new Edges came out and I disliked the changes, obviously the New edge has grown on me over the years, I’m on my second New Edge, 5th sn95 right now…I also had a 98 cobra back in 2003, that car got drooled over everywhere I went…
Same!!
Same here!
Me too honestly. My aunt had a 98’ black convertible V6 with tan leather, Mach 460 System and I absolutely LOVED it. Up until the day it was totaled in a nasty accident. I’m still trying to find one identical to it. No such luck. (Of course) I’ll always remember this particular body style as the generation of Mustangs that I will hoard in my memories until the day I die. Just like the 1960’s and 70’s generations. Haha
I fell in love with the SN95 when it first came out. I have a 98GT that I've had for 9 years, I drive it hard all the time (see my channel) and it has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. I absolutely love it!
Yep I remember in 1998 everybody either wanted a 98 mustang GT or the Camaro Z28 having either of the 2 was something special
Good review - I have a stock 1994 GT 5.0L/5 speed in the same red. Is it fast? Nope. Does it sound good? Yeah, it has the classic V8 rumble. After driving a 1993 Fox body 5.0L/5 speed, the fox body was faster because it was lighter, but the ride, seats, brakes, squeaks and rattles are so much better on the SN95 that it wasn’t even a comparison. They don’t get the love they deserve, but that’s okay. Some of us still enjoy them :)
Why hasn’t the “labra” came off yet? Please remove it lol
The 93 mustang cobra also had a horse in the grill.
I honestly liked these a lot back then... specially with staggered wheels and with stalker or cervinis ground effects...I remember Joe on powerblock had a black one
Best comment so far, it references Sunday mornings on Spike 15 years ago. 😎
I remember that too. Joe and Chuck on Horsepower. I remember that black vert on the dyno
I believe Tommy just loves hybrid vehicles because this is not worse mustang or ugliest mustang and I believe they sold pretty good. The interior was badass at the time with the mach 10 sound system, I say let Tommy stick to hybrids or things like that
Idk. I love classic cars and the original mustangs and I agree with him. This generation mustang sucked ass in terms of styling
The vents on the 94-95 Gt mustangs had real vents. Real vents on the hood & Side vents
Yeah I think the 96 had real ones too.
@Bad Drivers of AZ & NV lol good question. I guess it was some kind of “areo dynamic” vent or something. On my 95 you can see straight through it & it has fins in the wheel wells above the rear tire directly behind the vent. It’s kind of cool but with 215hp I don’t know if it’s necessary lol must be why they stopped
What's cool about the 5.0L compared to 4.6L and later engines is the possibilities for modifications the 5.0 offered. It was the very same for the 351 Windsor that was tougher than the 351 Cleveland
I had a manual '99 GT. The extra 45 HP made it a lot of fun to drive. Loads of torque in 1st and 2nd. It was a blast.
Talking about the interior, again you are showing your young ignorance. Prior to this generation of cars, the interior vinyl dried out and cracked easily. So while not, luxurious, the plastic they used was to combat the complaints of cracking plastic in previous generations. So to those of us in those days, this was an advance, not a negative. Is it as luxurious? No, but as you said it is holding up well.....and it is a convertible. obviously the person who bought this was not looking for a hard core sports car, hence the fake wood. Again, stop judging the past by today's standards. Your generation seems to love to do that without knowing the backstory.
Those had 6 cats on them too. I'd knock off the back 4, the o2s only read the 1st 2. Unclog it and hear that mod mill sing
The stock exhaust and intake really choke these. Upgrade the exhaust and intake and it’s a whole new beast. They also love 4.10 gears but be ready to have to buy new tires every couple years!
That strut tower brace and fake wood trim are not factory. I had a 97 convertible and loved it. I do wish it had more ponys under the hood but it sounded and looked amazing.
Had a 96 GT with the stock rear gearing and it was anaemic with 2.73 gearing and only 215hp. It was fairly heavy for its power but still super fun being manual, rwd, and having an LSD. 1st was the only gear you could have fun in and you could nearly reach the top speed of 143mph in 3rd and cruise at around 3,500rpm in 5th at top speed before you lost momentum.
I put 3.73 gears in mine. A great improvement.
I just found a 98 GT for dirt cheep! Can’t wait to get wrenching on it. I don’t need a race car, just want a reliable, nostalgic daily driver 🙂
I like this version much more than the new edge ones.
Hindsight is 20-20. Compared to the fox bodies, these were a breath of fresh air. had 2 fox bodies and they were, and are, ass ugly. But thats what we had. that fake wood in the interior was an aftermarket kit. Usually ads for it were in the back of car magazines back in the day. A "magazine" is a "website" printed on paper and thousands of copies were sold and sent by "mail". "Mail" is an email delivered by people instead of computers.
Haha foxbody is amazing! Especially 87-93. Check out what they’re going for. I have three. 90 vert 88 t top 87 t top. Try and find a 88 t top. To each there own but the fox body was and is one of the best.
@@mynameisfrank6519 Sure, if you like replacing heater cores. Both of mine ate up 2 of 'em. And alternators too. Maybe it was those 4th to 2nd downshifts or going from 10mph to 70mph in second. As a collectible or funnin' around car, yeah it's fun. As far as pricing goes, sure u could get alot for 'em now in relation to the original price. BUT as daily drivers, they were downright terrible. Drove mine for years. Harsh ride, don't even try it in snow or rain. ZERO traction. just too light in the ass end. And ughh... 4 lug wheels. had an 88 GT new. heater core, and burned a quart of oil every week since it was new. Ford said it was normal. A few years after i sold it, got a 90 LX 5.0 for 4500 bucks. Did a motor swap (Ford racing GT40 shortblock and gt40 intake) and 2 heater cores on that one. Or was it 3? And a clutch cuz the Kevlar clutch i put in it vaporized trying to go up a hill in snow. dont put a kevlar clutch in em. they chattered and were noisy af and slipped like a mf-er. stick with the stock setup if you're gonna drive it. And a transmission. And 3 alternators. The drivers seat track busted and the floor rotted through and the rear hatch would open if i hit a big pothole. Bought the second one, so that shows how much fun they were. But still fugly. Oh, and be very very careful messing with those heater core hoses, dont twist em around too much. if ya gotta take em off, just cut em and get new ones. and LEAVE that flow restrictor in there. trust me on that one
I just picked up a 04 gt vert with 7200 miles (not 72,000) for 8,500 bucks. Top and the majority of the car is immaculate. Has the bumper, hood, and trunk clear coat issues in spots, replaced the wiper cowl, had to fix the power window motor (just had to un stick it), replaced the mirrors little sun faded but could have be painted, painted wiper arms and honeycomb trim parts. As a summer car for us in ct, I could not be more happier in my choice. Does not bring back my high school days as a fox body or grand national (kick my self for not getting one of those when I had the chance) but such a fun car. Parts are all over the place and are totally affordable if not cheap. Think I paid 120 bucks for oem power side mirrors. I agree spend a few more bucks and get one a little more lower in mileage or in better shape. If ur thinking about a fun summer car or a nice dd, u can go wrong
I have the 4.6L V8 32 valve 280hp in my 1997 Lincoln MK8. No check engine light purrs like a kitten to this day....
I remember that smooth, effortless acceleration and that 4V motor had killer mid-range and top end power for the time.
That's still a cool car timeless design. Despite what these knuckleheads say.
I just bought a 94 cobra with a v1 supercharger black on black hardtop with 139k miles. Owner owned it for 11 years took really good care of it. Bought ut for 4500 bucks! After I took it two 4 diffrent mechanics 2 mechanics from CO pltey different shops said dude I was looking at that on Facebook and tried to buy it but they said someone was already looking at it. Yup that was me. 👍 haha got a great deal. Its really clean and cared for. Keep your eyes open there's always a killer deal out there in time.
As an owner of a 97 Mustang GT convertible in the north. Drove it 9 yrs winter and summer before keeping it in the garage for winters until now. With the right snow tires I can climb hill even buses were sliding backwards. As far as driving and power, it matches my 92 Acura Vigor except with better brakes. From trim and refinement, no doubt the Stang is no match.
From styling perspective this model saved the Mustang brand, it was an instant hit. The Camero and the Challenger have been in the rearview mirror of the pony since this model.
It blows me away when I hear these guys calling the SN95 "ugly". Personally, I think It's a beauty. I like it much more stylistically speaking than the Edge version.
To each his own.
I had a 96 Cobra convertible, never considered it to be ugly. They definitely improved the taillights from the earlier years
Have you never seen a Mustang II?
Finally working on ours. Has the Mach 460 stereo as well and it still works great. It’s driven on wash board mountain roads and has been beat but runs as good as the day my dad bought it.
Thank you. Someone finally said those years of mustangs were variation of the fox body
I’ve honestly loved all Mustangs, even the Mustang IIs 😂
Still have my '98 GT Convertible. 51k miles. White w/White top and gray leather. All stock. Bought it in '05. Rarely driven anymore, just sits in the garage. Probably hold on to it as long as I can, just because...
Well this body model is what got me into Mustangs, I love the look very much
I've owned a '65. '68. '99 and now own an '04 V6 convertible. All of them were and are six cylinders. I've always been into style more than power and although I do appreciate power, it's something I enjoy going to the track to watch more than own. BTW, those weird scratches on the hood look like cat scratches. The previous owner probably kept it parked outside and hoods tend to become cat beds, especially during the winter! Been there! Thanks for the video.
It needs a hurst short throw shifter with the positive stops. Third gear always goes when you powershift it, the stops fix that. Cheaper than a transmission.
IMO, not as ugly as the Mustang II. Looks much better without the black bra and the headlight covers. Even better as a coupé.
When I was little my parents had a 95 Cobra. I loved it. They ended up getting rid of it for a 97 Z/28.
I always loved this gen mustang especially the SVT COBRA 🐍
Those were awesome
My 1994 mustang has functional side scoops. I’m not sure what year they stopped, maybe 96, but they vent air directly onto the tire, so I am not sure how well that affects the cooling of the brakes.
And that fake wood was a very common mod in the early 2000s. They sold kits like that for all makes and models. Definitely not a dealer add on. I also don’t know what year they stopped this, but most of those pieces with the decals were coated in that infamous rubberized coating, which was very cool when new, but easily scrapped off or got sticky over time. Some owners would paint theirs, others, I suppose, went with decals.
These youngsters are being very disrespectful to the SN95 GTs. I loved them, especially the 96-98 with the 17s! One day I'll buy one.
I've had my 98GT for 9 years and I absolutely love it!
This is my all time favorite design, prob because I was in my teens when it came out. I have a 2012 now, but this one still makes me smile
Personally, I believe it's one of the best looking Stangs out there
the 302 Windsor made a lot more power than they claimed it did. they claimed it only made 225 at like 4000 rpm's but it revs to allmost 6000 rpm's. the 281 makes 215 at like 5000 rpm's and its a slow revving sadgassim! They ripped a 302 out of a 1993 GT and engine dynode it and it made about 255 unstressed. they put down about 200 rwhp so they are around 240bhp its not huge but ford always seems to nerf their power numbers. like how they said the 67 gt500 only had 335bhp but made over 450 with its 428 SCJ engine!
The terminator and svt cobra were smoking the Camaros and even the Corvettes..... Those mustangs were no joke 👍👍👌👌👌🔥🔥🔥🔥
Young guys….. I had a ‘95 Cobra and I thought it was beautiful car. I wish I still had it.
I'm 24 and have a 96 GT with a 01 bullitt swap, I love it. Although I put a cobra bumper on the front, it's lowered and has fat tires in the back so they aren't tucked under the fender
I owned a 97 v6 for years , one of the best cars I've ever had convertible to...I recently upgraded 2004 gt . Great video guys , new sub
In 1995, I got a new Miata, which was probably the most fun I have ever had in a car., and I have had several corvettes, Firebird, big block cars over many years. Now, the Miata was not powerful, but the handling was incredibly fun, even at over 100MPH, it was so addictive. I then got a new 1998 Mustang GT, and it was a let down. More power than the Miata, but handling was boring. Build quality was poor, Interior quality was mildly OK. The engine was not a powerhouse, but very dependable.
I have a 98 cov that I bought forteen years ago this almost bullet proof best car to have fun with for the money and won't fall apart on you
I love this car so much I own one when I was 15 I saw this car I fell in love with mustangs
My first Mustang was a '00 convertible V6 I bought cheap. I loved that damn car for the 18 months I owned it until I blew the rear differential (at that point, car had tooooo many issues to fix)
I could care less what people think about these cars. I could drive one til I die and never want any other car.
that dual cockpit was taken directly from a C2 corvette. look at a 63-67 vette interior
The side vents on all gt 94-95 were real on 96 and up they became fake.
I resent that. I think my 2004 limited edition 40th Anniversary GT is Beautiful. No it doesn't have to be the fastest to be a great car.
I had one juts like this but a 6cylder as my first car looking back it I miss that car so much
I love your channel but may I correct you on a statement you made. I know you most likely have been told already and it's that the Fox Body Mustang ran from 1979 to 1993 ,Not 1978. You Guys rock
Please keep the video's coming 👍.
I had a '96 in Bright Tangerine, one of only 800 or so in that color. I drove it daily for 7 years and put 150,000 miles on it.
The side vents on mine were functional. I think they deleted that feature for 1997.
Those 90's Mustangs were really well made. And those 94 and 95 302 short block motors are damn near indestructible if you maintain them. The 4.6L you have there are also strong. Good choice to represent the US in your comparison.
I bought a 1997 Thunderbird LX with the 4.6 engine a few years ago. I picked it up to be a cheap beater. Other than the paint job, it actually wasn't too bad! It was on the same foxbody platform as the Mustang and had IRS to boost! Sure, it wasn't as good as the Mustang, but it wasn't horrible. The only thing I wish it had was a manual transmission. I ended up giving it to a friend who was in desperate need of transportation. Anyone looking for a cheap cruiser, definitely check out the Thunderbirds/Cougars of this generation if you want something a little different.
I agree, the wood grain doesn't look good. But, it beats the "piano black" that scratches if you look at it wrong. :) With that said, I own an '07 S-197 Mustang GT w/the 5 spd. I tell people she ain't fast, but it makes up for that with the fun factor.
4:20 I've got a 95 GT and the vents on the quarters and hood are both functional on mine...
To tell the truth, this was one of the better looking Mustangs. The ugliest Mustang was the Mustang II, which when I was a little boy I absolutely hated. The SN95 Mustang was a hot seller with affordable performance, outselling the Camaro which I preferred.
I mean it's a stock vert of course it don't look that great. They have tons of potential. A stock vert from any year isn't gonna look that great lol. Lowered on 18s with a styling bar and blacked out windows, freshened up headlights with HID light upgrade headlights and fogs, and you can really update the interior with Dakota digital led gauge cluster, a nice new screen and a nice set of aftermarket front seats with a rear seat delete. That could really make a difference inside. Need a good shift knob and short throw shifter just like with any manual trans mustang or otherwise. I would do a cobra front bumper and black taillights and Saleen rear wing for that Saleen look from the back. Trust me when I say these things can look sick done right.
UGLY ?
WTf they are beautiful, those 90s curves makes me crazy !🥰
Hard top 5.0 would be nice but still that car had a lot of aftermarket support. With the fox mainly the 86 and up you could set it up to run 11s at the track or probably quicker, drive it to the track and back home then to work the next day. I had an 88 LX 5.0 5 speed with 2 stage flows headers and 3.55 rear. Was a fun car that sounds great. As far as at the track the 87 to 93 was the car you didn't see coming and when people went up against it they'd get pissed. At one point I believe in the late 80s you could get the battery in the trunk from the factory as well as air-conditioning and radio delete.
I have a 97 and a 98 and I love both of them
The IRS wasn't available until 1999 to 2004 models and only on the Cobra.
Hey there I have a 04 mustang GT automatic dark shadow gray and I get complimented on it all the time. Mustang GT for ever
This is the Mustang that started the revival of the Mustang.
My 1995 Mustang has over 350k miles. It's retired now [in TJ] but it could be my daily driver if I wanted to.
The current Mustang looks more like this model [not identical] than the future Mustangs that followed.
I will swear up and down the new edge is the cheapest, most reliable, best looking car for someone starting a car hobby. The after market is there for anything you can dream of and power is easy to make, if you know what your doing. Sadly most owners and critics think that they have no potential.
Headlight covers look cool 😂 it could protect them from fading too fast and bugs during the day.
I dynod mine back in the day and it made 170 horsepower but theyre fun.
I actually hate the new edg Mustang even more, this one was one my favorites and to this day I'm kinda fond of for some reason. Maybe cause I test drove one when I was younger for fun (I wasn't really gonna buy it) and I loved it.
Lol my first two cars were 98s bought them for 1k a piece the one lasted me a good 100k on top of the 150k it already had when I bought it the second one is pushing 250k and still truckin so call it ugly if you want but they run for a while and they’re fun
1974-1978 were the ugliest Mustangs ever. Even with the V8 they were slower than a turtle and looks well a rebadged Pinto.
I had a 1994 Mustang GT in my late teens in the late 90s. One day Ill own another 94-95 GT and soup it up. 😆
The ‘94 and early ‘95 mustangs and cobras did have real ducts for the rear brakes
This one of the good looking mustangs in my mind
My dad had almost the exact same car. 1998 convertible GT Premium, manual, red.
I dont get the rolly polly description. I owned a stick shift gt, and it was enough power to be exciting
The concept car names made me think how appropriate terminator was. Guess I wasn't old enough to get it when they came out.
i had a 96 saleen. easy to drive. good to drive. not much performance. so if performance is not on top of your list but easy, nice to drive, reliable and nice then this car is great.
Remove the 6 yes 6 cats from the 4.6 and add some gears you make some decent power!
Supposedly the 94 and 95 the side vent went strait though
Calls the sn95 ugly like he doesn’t know what the Mach E and mustang ll is
I got a 95 its sweet AF
3:46 It looks like the offspring of a Ford Probe and an Audi.
I still like this car to this day!
I am sorry, it is not ugly. You are able to have your opinion. But you are not the be all and end all of design. Without it, you would not have a mustang, even if ford is currently trying to destroy.
I like the new mustangs ....they have come a long way . Some people like the mustang 2 's . I do not myself . I do like the foxbody . It was winner when it came to a light fast car , cheap , lot's of go fast parts , suspension parts . Alot of bang for your buck . They came out with the sn95 ....it was a more rigid , better car ,suspension , brake wise . It was still a light car , you can still make it handle ,make it go!! for not alot of money . Alot of bang for your buck . I don't think it is ugly at all . The 5.0 has alot of potential , so does the 4.6 2v or 4v . A supercharger , forged 4.6 2v , cams , a built 5 speed , transmisiion , suspension , You see where my mind is going !! 400 hp in a light little car , it is not a 500 to 700 hp coyote 5.0 . But then it does not weigh 3900 pounds like a Dark Horse Mustang , or way anywhere near a Hellcat either . Less is more !!
My 98 the motors worked on I can burn rubber and 1st gear I burn rubber in 2nd gear
There's nothing harder than trying to upsell a so-so convertible that's only living because of it's V6 engine. On the other hand, a lot of cars that old are already scrapped and how many 2020 on up cars will be roadworthy in 2055 given the shitty parts problem?
This one is a GT, it has the 4.6 V8. I'd prefer the coupe though.
@@damilolaakanni My mistake. I assumed it was a V6 because most of the V8's have either been driven hard or exploded.
Well blessings to the channel I'm a proud owner of a 1998 Mustang GT w 89,000 original miles; ugly as it might be its mine 🤷🏾♂️
Awesome video! I took an obvious interest as soon as I saw the video lol. Paint problems were huge issues with these cars, I would call you guys lucky that you got a car with no clear coat peeling. The side and hood vents can both be made "useable" but the side vent are particularly tricky, as in stock configuration if you drilled out those vent meshes, air actually just seeps into the cabin. If you took the vent piece off you'd see that it just leads to a big hole underneath the rear seats/trim, so "useable" is a stretch without serious mods. I never knew about the wood interior pieces which is a funnily terrible looking thing! Although I like these cars, obviously, I am always impressed with the things Ford dealers were able to rip people off for. In some trims, that ash tray is dual-cup holder that, in manual trim, loves letting 2nd gear kiss your drink a little too hard.
Are these cars ugly as f&*k? Yes. But in some weird way it grows on you. Biggest thing these cars need are lower ride heights.
Left relatively stock, these are awesome cruisers. I plan on getting a second one for just that, nice cheap cruising. In terms of performance, eh. Sport bucket seats were definitely a let down in all aspects, even comfort. Do not get excited about IRS, as far as I know that only ever came with 03-04 terminators. While the loose, easy going shifter is nice after you get used to it, it is not for performance. For some reason it is mounted way too far forward which is partly the reason the throw had to be so long. Throw a cheap short-throw in without an ergonomically-correct handle and you will find half of the gears very hard to reach. The chassis is soft, any mod with the word "brace" in it should be high on the priority lost, but I still find that with just a regular suspension upgrade, these cars can feel tight and fun below the limit. Everyone into these model years has... opinions on the 2V 4.6l. They can be built, for more money than a pushrod, and make less power than a pushrod, but there is something to be said about *driving* the 4.6. I would not call it a terrible motor but for performance there are just better options; I.E. the newer 5.0L Coyotes.
A little trick for everyone looking at these cars; you know the "modular" part of the name "Ford 4.6L Modular"? Ford never stopped doing that modular thing. Coyotes are modular motors and drop right into these cars with minimal effort, even bolts up to stock driveline stuff. Take a wiff of my channel to see what thats about
If I didn’t knock off a phone pole with my 98 gt I’d still have it! Now I’ve had an 05 gt for the last 10 years
My 98 I had it topped out as a 157 miles per hour
94-96 rear vents were functional actually
That’s not a composite hood unless it’s aftermarket. Also the quarter vents were real depending on the model and year. I had a 96 GT coupe and vert with real vents. That car appears to be a 96 based on the dash clock so the vents should be real just check the wheel well and you’ll see vents. Further, sn95s didn’t come with IRS that wasn’t available until new edge with the cobra…. To be technical since I’ve noticed multiple errors explaining the car, the top is power hydraulic, not electric.
By "composite" he means fiberglass.
@@ostrich67 stock hoods are steel, only after market hoods are composite or fiberglass
@@Steve-zr1tt nope. I owned one. It had a heavy fiberglass hood from the factory.
@@ostrich67 that’s not stock. Stamped steel came from factory exclusively. Meshed up fiberglass isn’t really heavy at all. I’ve had fiberglass and aluminum hoods both are light weight. Also thin steel hoods are very light. You can’t source a fiberglass stock looking hood cuz no one made those and ford never manufactured them.
@@Steve-zr1tt well, I owned one from new and I've seen some wrecked ones that were bone stock and had broken fiberglass hoods, but hey, you're the expert.
Yes, the SN95 was the ugly stepchild of the next 25 years, but...they're good cars with a lot of potential. For example. If you have the funds Tommy you could get the cams and intake for a nice 30-40 wheel horsepower gain. If you really have free funds, find heads from a New Edge and swap them over with the intake and cams for an even better gain which can in most circumstances put you in the neighborhood of 300-310 crank HP on pump gas.
my 99 mustang also has those SRS fonts
I never loved the styling of this generation but wouldn't call them ugly.
The ugliest Mustang is whatever model was out in the early 70s...the big, bloated carbage that preceded the Mustang II.
