Explanation:
Eugene Shoemaker was a geologist and founder of modern planetary science. He studied craters on Earth and on the moon and realized that they were created by asteroid impacts. Shoemaker was the lead geology researcher for Apollo missions, and he also helped train the Apollo astronauts who went to the moon. He himself was a candidate for an Apollo Moon flight, but was disqualified after being diagnosed with Addison's disease. Later in life, he said, "Not going to the moon and hitting it with my own hammer has been the biggest disappointment in life."
Schoenmaker spent much of his later years searching for undiscovered impact craters around the world. He died on July 18, 1997 in a car accident in Australia, where he studied craters.
In recognition of his scientific achievements, part of his ash was brought to the moon by the Lunar Prospector spacecraft in 1999. His final resting place is close to the moon's south pole, in the Shoemaker crater named after him.
The shoemaker's urn was engraved with a quote from Romeo and Juliet:
"And when he will die...
Unpack it and cut it out into small asterisks
And he will make the face of heaven so beautiful
That the whole world will be in love with the night
And don't show worship to the bright sun."
He is the only man buried on a celestial body other than earth. After his death, he was finally able to go where he always wanted to be.

When I first heard this on the album I thought they would never be able to do this live. Wrong! They did it perfectly. And Floor absolutely nailed the operatic part at the end. She never ceases to amaze me.

Tuomas, Keyboardist and Composer, wasn't sure they could do this one live but Floor convinced him and EVERY time she knocks that ending Operatic part OUT the park!!!! This song is a tribute to Eugene Shoemaker, a metorologist who mapped craters on the moon to plan for the moon landing. He also visited various meteorite sites on Earth and died in Australia in a car crash while visiting a site. His ashes were deposited on the moon in a container which had the quotation from Romeo and Juliet written on it. Once you know that it is worth revisiting the song.

So ,... Eugene Merle Shoemaker (April 28, 1928 - July 18, 1997) was an American geologist. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn S. Shoemaker and David H. Levy. This comet hit Jupiter in July 1994: the impact was televised around the world. Shoemaker also studied terrestrial craters, such as Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona, and along with Edward Chao provided the first conclusive evidence of its origin as an impact crater. He was also the first director of the United States Geological Survey's Astrogeology Research Program.
He was killed in a car accident while visiting an impact crater site in Australia. After his death, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon with the Lunar Prospector mission.
The spoken word in this is done by Tuomas Holopainen's Wife Johanna Kurkela ( a section from Romeo And Juliet is also carved Eugene's urn ).

I really liked your verbal and emotional reactions, and I can see that you have an ear for beautiful music. What I don't understand about you Americans are your associations. Your comparisons to movie music, which I keep hearing in Nightwish responses. Europe has an infinitely long musical tradition and this is also used again and again in modern pieces. We Europeans find comparisons mainly to pieces of music by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Ravel or the many other composers and less often to films. This is because film scores are usually also based on classical European music! It would certainly be an interesting listening experience for you, there is enough classical European music on the net. Floor was not the first singer with classical training to join Nightwish. Tarja established the classic vocals in metal and Floor is just a successor. Tarja is traveling solo today:

@Justin: What other band can sing...? Nightwish with TARJA and of course Epica with Simone Simons! You really really have to checkt out Epica, the 2nd unbelivable Symphonic Metal Band next to NW. Start with a ballad. Simone was made for ballads. Epica feat Apocalyptoca "Rivers" AFAS live or "Once upon a Nightmare" OMEGA Alive. You will be blown away.
