Thanks for a nice shout-out. I'm glad you decided to continue exploring, I'm sure you won't regret it. You have in front of you a real ocean of good music, of a unique diversity (actually, they don't have 2 similar songs), created and performed in more than a quarter of a century of activity. Of course, you have a new subscriber here.
I really liked your interpretation, you got the meaning of the lyrics well (hint: the band's official videos have almost all subtitles). Creative imagination is a major theme of Nightwish's songs, and especially of the album "Imaginaerum" (7th, 2011) of which "Storytime" is a part.
    All the best, from Romania!

2015 also was the year, I stumbled about their Wacken Live-DvD and got hooked ever since. Utter frustration came, when I realized, that I have been blinded with all that research on YT, so I didn't notice that they gave a concert a fortnight earlier, just 10 miles from my home. Luckily I was able to attend 4 Nightwish concerts and 1 solo-concert of Floor Jansen live at the venue in the meanwhile, only to notice that they are really as good live on stage as their video-clips suggest.

    Blake. . . . . . . .
We might have told you already but it might help you to know Tuomas uses several pseudonyms to refer to himself in various Nightwish songs which he writes from experiences, observation or imagination, he says he is a man with a boy's heart, a grown-up Peter Pan, and you will see that directly in places even when he uses boy narrators sometimes in place of himself. Digging into his lyrics is almost a second bite of the cherry. He will also use poet, dreamer, writer/song writer or ocean soul - Tuomas has an affinity for the ocean, he was studying to be a marine biologist.
So here, "A writer by a fire. . . . . ." Tuomas is speaking to you directly, he is the story-teller, the “writer by the fire” - "Took a journey into a child-man’s heart" would be Tuomas remembering the childhood stories, the Peter Pan escapades of his imagination and fascinations, but the boy has grown up from being a Peter-Pan, the crib is empty.
Floor sings the bridge "Neverland, innocence, dreams of every man. . . . . ." in a high operatic head voice, a pitch you might expect from a very excited small boy.
Now, go look at all the lyrics and the references to the childhood classic stories and it all drops into place; it's one of the songs where it is easy to dig inside Tuomas' metaphoric lyrics and unravel them.
Good stuff, you keep at it, Nightwish will not disappoint.

    Hello
I have some info on Floor Jansen for you here.
She is married to Hannes Van Dahl, drummer of the Swedish power metal band Sabaton. Together they have 2 daughters (Freja & Lucy)
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 3 octaves (C3 to F6). Re-singing style ranges from opera to screams and grunts. She usually sings in English, in addition she has also sung songs in Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Latin, Italian and Swedish.
Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she cool singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.
    Greetings from the Netherlands.

Nightwish is a band of many facets with a singer of many facets. Nightwish spans a broad spectrum of metal, from a song with death metal elements "Yours is an Empty Hope" (ya, Floor growls), to a jazzy number "Slow, Love, Slow" to Celtic folk metal "My Walden" to thrash metal "Romanticide", so it's up to you how you want to go.
And then we get to Floor's previous bands ReVamp (a fusion of prog and death metal) and After Forever (symphonic, prog metal). Or there's Floor's recent pop solo album, her COVID covers or her hard rock project Northward. Then we have her German and Dutch TV show appearances where she swings from an aria from a German operetta to German rap. Then to top it off, we throw in her singing the phone book live on Dutch radio. Or we could listen to her sing "O Holy Night" in Finnish while six months pregnant. All live of course.
So do you want to go down this musical smorgasbord, randomly sampling here and there or carefully plan out your musical meal?

Each song is like it’s own mini movie requiring a story and a score. It’s a complete production composed for the purpose of connecting listeners to the story and to the emotion entwined within. Tuomas writes captivating stories, the band brings them to life, and Floor (with help from Marko & Troy) delivers the story & emotion. It’s good you’re paying attention to the lyrics. Enjoy Ghost River or Song of Myself from the same Wacken 2013 live show.

Hi Blake! Yes...your first Floorgasm haha. And more to follow, I promise you! Fyi: As you also like classical music, the pipes around Tuomas' keyboards resemble the monument in Helsinki of the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) and is a tribute to him. In 2019 Floor participated in a season of a Dutch TV series called "Beste Zangers" (Best Singers). A group of famous Dutch singers come together and sing songs to each other which has a meaning to them. Floor decided to join as one of the artists was Henk Poort, a baritone, who was the Dutch Phantom for years and Floor was a fan of him from a very young age. The last episode of each season is a duet one. Floor asked Henk to do "The Phantom of the Opera" and he said yes on one condition...to sing this song with NW when they would come to the Netherlands. Their Phantom duet exploded the internet! And when NW finally came to Holland they fulfilled their promise. But although the concert one is very good I prefer the TV version, much more intimate. NW did the Phantom with their first singer Tarja but I personally like Floor's version better. Cheers from The Netherlands!

I'm so glad that you are continuing your journey with Nightwish. This band has so much to offer, as you have just begun to discover. And, there is so much more. They have been around for almost 30 years, with three different female vocalists, Floor here being the current one. For 20 of those years, their bassist also acted as male vocalist. His duets with the female vocalists are all wonderful, reaching almost perfection with Floor. He also takes the lead in some songs. I forget the exact order of Gabriel's list, but if you are following that, you should begin to hear from him in one or two songs. Tuomas on the keys is the composer and lyricist for the great majority of their songs. Emppu on the guitar can create the perfect tone for any of the many feelings that this band can produce. The two drummers, Jukka who you saw in this video, and Kai who took over when Jukka had to step away due to severe insomnia, are both spectacular but very different in their styles. And, there is a sixth member of the band who you haven't seen yet, Troy, the multi-instrumentalist, who can play just about anything spectacularly. I am looking forward to following you on your journey.

There's not much I can add that hasn't been said but I really love how you take the time to give your interpretation and appreciate the artistry. There's so much depth and a lot of their music encourages you to think and find your own meaning behind the words.

New subscriber for Nightwish. As I said in a comment on your last Nightwish reaction, Tuomas (keyboardist who writes the majority of the music and lyrics) writes from a very personal, introspective place and as a result his lyrics can sometimes be a bit difficult to interpret, and he’s not very keen on explaining. While this song is a bit more clear in its meaning, I’d recommend not getting too hung up on lyrical meanings right off the bat. When you’ve gotten to know Tuomas and the band more, that sort of thing will come more naturally. And yeah…Floor is indeed intriguing. I’d recommend you check out her personal UA-cam channel…during the COVID lockdown, she posted a series of “Storytime” videos where she just sort of took you along with her on a typical day at home…gardening, building a paddock for her horses, singing, etc. You’ll get a great sense of who she is beyond the Valkyrie you see on stage…she’s actually a very gentle, humble, beautiful soul.

You have a lot to listen to and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Although that world's Greatest show on earth is from Tampere for starters😎🤘

Hey Blake, great analyzing and yes,Nightwish is a fun band to see and hear, but their lyrics have content/meaning in the sence that it's not so much a message but more a overthinking of some human attributes. You stepped in a wonderfull journey if you dive deeper into Nightwish and also discover some other qualities of the seperate members.
Gabriel and the Nightwish (army) fanbase will help you on your way with Nightwish and give some nice suggestions for other "epic"bands like Sabaton,Epica,Ayreon.........and more.😉
    Sooooo much more to discover.🤘

Imaginaerum is not only an album. Nightwish made a movie, as well. It's about this demented old composer who's trying to remember something important, and travel back to his childhood through his dreams to search for the answer. It's pretty special, but as a member of Nightwish Army, I simply just love it. 🤘😎

    10:45 "Underrated? Yes!"
Oh I absolutely see why you'd say that from an American perspective. The obvious answer from an "outside" (the US) perspective would be to say "only in America". Nightwish is a big name in the world. Another way of saying this would be that the US is underdeveloped at this point and that you guys have got its entertainment industry to "thank" for it. Really like your idea about journeying with specific bands for a while. So stick with Gabriels guide and in due time, you'll be ready for your next adventure into melodic/prog metal: AYREON. Cheers from Amsterdam! 🤘

Blake, hi! Glad you’re continuing your Nightwish journey. Gabriel is great, he won’t steer you wrong. The beauty of Nightwish is there songs are cookie cutter sings, each song is different and great. It is truly a shame we in America have truly embraced Nightwish like other countries have. But that is changing, thank heavens, with youtube. Sadly most Americans compare Nightwish to Evanescence, which is unfair since Nightwish is way way better. I do like Evanescence but Nightwish is superior.

The best thing about Nightwish is the variety in there music , every song is a little bit different from the last one but they all have the signature sound .......Tuomas ( the keyboardist) is one of the greatest songwriters that's ever put a pen to paper and has top level musicians to work with along with the most versatile singer on the Planet....
Anyway great reaction Blake ......your part of the Nightwish Army .....new album will be out later this year .....unfortunately they wont tour for a few years ( we'll see ) taking a break but when they do you have to go and see them , its a night you wont forget , you think Floor is intriguing through a video wait to see her live , you cant keep your eyes off her .

So Nightwish has opened the door to symphonic metal, kick it open and have a listen to EPICA as well - Maybe start with ‘Once upon a Nightmare’ Omega Alive, or ‘Unleashed’ Live from the retrospect concert (which has a full orchestra and choir backing the bands live performance) - Most Nightwish fans also have a soft spot for Epica and vice versa.

haha well welcome and agreed it will probably be a good idea to dedicate a night cause they have lots of songs and concerts to check out and I too can't figure out why they're unheard of as also many other reacters said the same, they've been around since 1996 Floor's the third singer Tarja was first until 2005 more operatic, then Annette which was more "pop", then in 2012 Floor. and Gabrial will help you out as others, just a caution the only one you may want to wait on and research first would br "Poet and the Pendulum" it's real and involves a bad time for the band but as you progress you'll love the members and Toumas's writing genius (he's the keyoardist) enjoy your journey

If you like history you will like their longest song to date called "The Greatest Show On Earth" It charts the history of planet Earth, the history of people and the history of music all in one song. It is based on a book of the same name by an English prefessor called Richard Dawkins
Also Floor is married to the drummer of a group called Sabaton who are famous for their songs based upon historical events. You might like to go check that band out at some point

@Blake: trust me, you haven't even scratched the surface 😂. But one thing is for sure. The goddess has grabbed your soul 🤩 > welcome to the army. So if you like Symphonic Metal you really must discover the 2nd unbelivable band, too. EPICA. I always say NW & Epica are my Yin&Yan of Metal music. Why? Because you will find every emotion you can imagine in their music. Simply said. Nightwish is about creating unbelievable harmonies (with Marko, you haven't heard yet, and Floor). Epica is about contrast (building harmonies), more heavy stuff, but also blessed with incredible beauty. To start with a ballad, getting chills, please react to EPICA feat. Apocalyptica "Rivers" AFAS live. And yes there will be a cherry on top of the cake later. A duet with Simone & Floor. But that's another story 🤪

From a more personal note, the Waken 2013 concert, is pretty mush the gold standard of Live music, and very few concerts reach that level. That also means that if you have a choise between a studio recording/Music Video or the live version.... take the Live version :)

Love your reaction... WELCOME TO THE NIGHTWISH ARMY 🥰
This song is mainly about Tuomas's dream; the one he's been having since he was a small child. (It's from an album and a movie called IMAGINAREUM)
This song was written for the second singer, Anette Olsen, so it's more "pop-ish.
But our Valkyrie FLOOR JANSEN has made this "her own".... and I think it's BETTER ! ❤

  • @chrisoleary1909

This is really such a great follow on to Ghost Love Score, because GLS blows you away in one way, this in a completely different one.
With GLS, you know why you've never heard it on the radio, you can't imagine something like that played there... Storytime makes you wonder how the heck it wasn't all over the radio the minute it came out, because it grabs you the way great radio tunes do.
You're about to hear a third song, probably Romanticide, and you'll be blown away again, and again in a different way.
And that is the most amazing thing about Nightwish. They're going to keep blowing your doors off. But every time they do it's going to come from a different angle.
Great rabbit hole to find yourself in. Alice you know, once did!

Just a thought…. Personally, I think it would be very wise if the US starts to explore what is good and wise outside US boundaries. I’ve been quite a lot of times in the US. Very often when I talked with US counterparts (I served Netherlands Navy for 38 years) I got the feeling that there was very little awareness what happened in the ‘rest of the world’ if it didn’t concerned them and/or they didn’t like it. Music is one of those aspects. The country where I am borne and raised (The Netherlands) is very small in a big world, but a pretty good thing in Europe. One of those things I consider really good is a yearly music thing called ‘Vrienden van Amstel’. I think you would be amazed if you give you reaction of ‘Kensington & Di-rect in Vrienden van Amstel’. It is on UA-cam. Hope you do… Thanks for reacting on this one

you could say that Tuomas has a bit of a fixation on the loss of innocence, or the child inside, that the big bad world tends to remove from us as we age! I think that a lot of the woes of the world are due to this very fact and the longer people are able to hold onto a sense of wonder, the longer they care for what is happening. I travel...a lot, and I travel to some very remote parts of the world where people have nothing that the western world would consider of value and yet they are content and happy and when you talk to them you can see a sense of wonder that is still there alive and kicking and you feel good inside and just for a little while think, we're all going to be ok! Then you return home turn on the tv, catch the news and realise that all these elected people are trying their best to destroy the world around us whether through greed, incompetence or just plain old ignorance. Stay young at heart, keep an open mind and LIVE life as we only have one shot and it ain't for long in the grand scheme of things 🤣

This is our Valkyrie Goddess for you. And you witnessed first hand a "Dutch Windmill" , and to finish you off, The Operatic "Cruise Missile" !!!!
Floor has 3 distinct styles. Head banging(straight forward, then back), hair whip(almost like cracking a bull whip) and the Windmill(continuous 360 degree revolutions). Why Windmill? Well she is Dutch.
Awesome tune , although it is kind of a pop/rockish sound (originally sung by Anette, the second singer of Nightwish), but Floor gave it soooo much POWER !!! Including this "Operatic" part, what was originally done by children's choir because vocal limitations on their second singer (Great singer also, I might add), but Floor has none of that "Limit".
Nightwish lyrics are often a bit interpretive, and not as "straight forward" as many other bands, because Tuomas ( The Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen: founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish.) prefers people to put their own interpretations and life experiences into the lyrics. you connect with songs on a personal level when there is something there that relates to things you have gone/are going through, and you may even find new connections later on in life when you have gone through other big events/emotions. there might be songs you are quite indifferent about (oh, nice song) and then you go through something big and all of a sudden it makes you break down in tears because now you relate to something in the lyrics you didn't before, and see it from a whole new perspective. imagination and life experiences are powerful, and Tuomas has great appreciation of this.
