Upper Brewers to Chaffey's Lock - Rideau Canal Solo Canoe Trip - Day 2

- All of the clips in the video were filmed on Sunday August 29th, 2021. This video summarizes the second day of my solo canoeing adventure on the Rideau Canal.

In this episode, I begin from my campsite at the Upper Brewers Lockstation and paddle north to the Chaffey's Lockstation. I took the canoe through 6 locks: Jones Falls - Locks 39/40/41/42, Davis - Lock 38, and Chaffeys - Lock 37. I paddled through the Cataraqui River, Court of the Duke, Cranberry Lake, Little Cranberry Lake, Whitefish Lake, Sand Lake, and Opinicon Lake. I paddled under a total of 3 bridges including the Brass Point Bridge (Burnt Hills Road), Jones Falls Road, and Chaffeys Lock Road. I also visited the community of Seeley's Bay where I stopped at the grocery store. The municipalities I paddled through include Kingston, South Frontenac, Leeds and the Thousand Islands, and Rideau Lakes. After arriving at my destination, I spent the night camping on the top side of Chaffey's lock.

The canoe is a Bluewater Peterborough 16', made of Kevlar and manufactured in Guelph, ON in the early 1990's. I filmed this video using a Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone. The GPS I used for the trip is a Garmin eTrex 30.

Too bad you didn't pick up a "Walking Tour of Chaffey's Lock" brochure. The Chaffey's Lockmaster's Museum is closed for the season but the brochures should be available at the Park's office where you purchased your camping pass. Come back to Chaffey's again one day and maybe take in a dance at our Historic Chaffey's Lock Community Hall! A tour of the Opinicon is a must as well! We are hoping everything will be up and running again next spring.
Awe, too bad indeed! I enjoyed my visit to Chaffey's Lock and I'm sure I'll find my way back there again one day, perhaps on the Cataraqui Trail. Hopefully by then everything will be running as usual again. Maybe I'll even get to see a mermaid :P

Have you considered canoeing on the French river? I did a 7 day trip there and had a ball. Saw black bear and rattle snakes.
Raw corn on the cob is delicious, I recommend it! I've done my fair share of backcountry camping trips, but for the last few years I've been most interested in trips which combine together natural landscapes with urban ones such as small towns.

I get the impression that you are not a fisherman, otherwise it would be interesting to see an occasional fish or two landed. Good series.

I have to say, based on what I've seen thus far in your videos, the Rideau Canal locks are much more interesting, have more character?, than the Trent Severn Waterway ones. Also, how nice to have gotten that sandwich! - A bit of "lock magic"? (is there a "trail magic" comparable for paddlers?)
I think that the Rideau Canal is more picturesque than the TSW, probably because most of the locks are made out of stone, as are many of the buildings. The Rideau Canal is nearly a century older and a lot of the infrastructure has not been modernized. At the same time though, the Trent-Severn has some really unique pieces like the Lift Locks and the Marine Railway which are impressive to see. Both systems have a ton of character and I thoroughly enjoyed visiting both of them.
How do you safely lock up your canoe please?
I use a bike lock and lock it to a tree or metal pole usually.
I considered that but isn’t the “handle bar” on the canoe technically removable so thieves could remove the lock that way?
@@RongRoseLiu Yes, you're right, they could. I attached my lock to the 'yolk' of the canoe which can be removed by loosening off and removing 4 nuts and bolts. However, this would be a somewhat time consuming task, especially when the canoe is locked up against something and underside is harder to access. If a thief really wanted to steal the canoe, they could just cut the lock off with a battery powered angle grinder (a tool that many bike thieves apparently carry these days). There's nothing that you can do to make a canoe (or a bike) completely unstealable if it's left unattended outside.
