    In this episode, I begin from a small island just south of Cambridge and paddle south to the Brant Conservation Area. My total paddling distance was 35.5km. I paddled under 7 bridges including Footbridge Rd, Glen Morris Rd, the CN Dundas Subdivision railway bridge, William St, Dundas St W, Highway 403, and the Oak Hill Trail bridge. Another point of interest I passed was the Murray Overlook where there are old stone pillars in the river from the ruins of a Great Western Railway bridge. I portaged around two dams: The Penmans Dam in Paris and the Wilkes Dam in Brantford. After completing the first portage I went for a walk around the streets of Paris, stopped to buy sunglasses from Home Hardware and ate lunch at a restaurant called edit. The municipalities I paddled through include the the Township of North Dumfries in the Waterloo Region, Brant County and the City of Brantford.

    The canoe is an Old Town Penobscot 16', made of Royalex, which I rented from Element Canoes in Hamilton: www.elementcanoes.com I filmed this video using a Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone. The drone shots were filmed using a DJI Mine SE. The GPS I used for the trip is a Garmin eTrex 30.

    Wow! I was surprised to see the wonderful, fancy portage in Paris now! Last time we got out there, back in the 80s or 90s (we used to live right across the river from that spot), you had to haul your canoe up a relatively clear area on the bank. I love those canoe/kayak stalls! And I laughed at your efforts to keep the raccoon out of your food barrel at the end! Looking forward to video #5.

      Yes, I'm almost certain of that now, especially since I later discovered that a loaf of break was missing from the barrel (hadn't noticed at first). I had initially written off the possibility of it having been a racoon because I really didn't think they were capable of opening a barrel.

  • @ADVENTUREKM
    @ADVENTUREKM 2 роки тому

    I was surprised to see a raccoon able to open that barrel. Isn't that a bear barrel lol! I have done a few sections of this river would like to complete the rest as well. Nice videos cheers

    • @cjhoyle

      I was surprised too. The company claims they are "critter-proof", which I assumed included racoons. However, I've since discovered that the lids can be locked shut which I think will keep the racoons out. No, they aren't bear-proof, but there are 'bear canisters' which are (apparently).

    When turtles hatch, it looks like a crime scene, just like your images showed. I’m pretty sure the hatchlings were ok…they weren’t dug up by man nor beast. This series of vids have been most enjoyable for me. Thanks for sharing.

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  2 роки тому

      Hmm I see, but wasn't this too early in the season for turtles to hatch (early June)? Around the time I was filming this I had seen some posts about turtles starting to lay their eggs.

    • @billzielke6798
      @billzielke6798 2 роки тому

      @@cjhoyle Here in eastern Iowa, we can have different turtles hatch at different times. Snappers seem to have a wide range of hatchlings. Your vid gave me the impression that the holes were dug by snapping turtles. The babies leave shells everywhere and moms dig huge nests in rough soils…even gravel roads/banks. It seems that exposure to sunlight is key.

    • @billzielke6798
      @billzielke6798 2 роки тому

      @@cjhoyle Maybe…could be any number of reasons. It looked like the nest got full sun. That could push hatching. Another factor of climate change?

    When you said a weird breathing sound outside your tent, the first thing I thought of was Darth Vadar lol! That's the problem with the blue food barrels, they aren't really 100% animal proof. I've read a lot online about animals still being able to get into them. I guess you could have hung the barrel, but I imagine a raccoon would still be able to climb up the tree and down the rope to the barrel. Hanging is probably more effective for bears, not small animals. They have these new types of animal proof containers that look interesting, called BearVault, which are supposed to be extremely difficult for animals to unscrew and get into. Probably one of the most difficult things to figure out while travelling by canoe, or bike, or even on foot, is what type of food to bring, how to transport the food, and where to put the food each night.

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  2 роки тому +1

      haha I've tried to look up the sound afterwards and I believe it was somewhat similar to what you can in hear in a UA-cam video titled "Doe blowing". I really wish I had filmed my encounter, but having no idea what animal I was hearing, I was genuinely afraid. As far as racoons go, I'm hoping that bringing a small padlock with me next time will solve that problem. I will definitely have to look into a BearVault though if I'm traveling through bear country.

      @@cjhoyle You must not know much about sling shots. As in any projectile weapon it depends on the ordinance. A clay pellet will sting, a steel one will kill. p.s. Even though I've been an archer for 40 years, it's still very hard to place a precise shot past 50'. A sling rifle however will place that shot within 1 MOA every single time with a laser sight--without practise.

      @@cjhoyle so about that lmfao I seen your second video after I commented but I had no encounter until the 3rd night I do put the cooler in the car so only had the charcoal bbq and a few knives and spoons left on the table but it wad around 1130 Saturday my company had went and laid down a hour before but the fire was just getting to its end and I had the tent set up in the back corner their leading down to the water and I had a tiki touch set up half way in the middle of the sit on the permit post side and the car was towards the road sideways on the site and I had my back turned to the tent and I heard a weird sound coming from behind the car on the road side but I was quiet so it didn't know I was there and it walked right up between the car up the tiki touch and that's when i seen it and I yelled twice and it went away didn't see it again but it wasn't beefy like most I have seen at the campgrounds i travel to and it looked just like the same one u seen and showed in your video so really strong possibilities it was the Same one but yeah I did have a run in
      But your video gave me a Good chuckle and after i saw ur video I was reminded about Saturday night but yeah that racoon in your video looked the same I had a good 2 to 3 seconds look at it b4 I got it go away unsure if it came back but nothen was messed with so that's all that matter but hope for future ur blue bin stays safe
      Also the 6 nations campground I watched them build those cabins on the front of the property I never knew it was a campground I go down there every 2 weeks I am a smoker and I'm assuming your next video will be you at byng we stayed their in 2019 and I will laugh if u have the same site again we had a water site there too so never know lol

    I bet that was pretty spooky to wake up to a deer during your stealth camp, but neat to see you try it out. What's the average price for a camping spot? It was $50 last time I went to a provincial park which really adds up on multiday solo bike/canoe trips. The price makes me want to try more stealth camping.

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  2 роки тому

      The deer actually came in the early evening, before I went to sleep. That of course made me wonder all night if it would be coming back again. The average price was a bit more than $50 per night. It's definitely a better deal if you're traveling as a group and can split the price of campsites.
