  • All of the clips in the video were filmed on Monday August 30th, 2021. This video summarizes the third day of my solo canoeing adventure on the Rideau Canal. My total paddling distance on this day of the trip was 34.2 km.
    Strava for Day 3: / strava
    In this episode, I begin from my campsite at the Chaffey's Lockstation and paddle northeast to the Colonol By Island on Big Rideau Lake. I took the canoe through 2 locks: Newboro - Locks 36 and Narrows - Lock 35. I paddled through Indian Lake, Clear Lake, Newboro Lake, Upper Rideau Lake, and Big Rideau Lake. I paddled under a total of 3 bridges, including the Cataraqui Trail historic railway bridge, County Road 42, and the Narrows Swing Bridge (Narrows Lock Road). I also paddled past the Scott Island Ferry, which is a very small barge with a crank that uses a chain to pull itself across the small narrows between Indian Lake and Clear Lake. I decided not to stop to visit the community of Newboro, nor to paddle the extra distance required to visit Westport, but after arriving at Colonel By Island, I paddled south across Big Rideau Lake to visit the community of Portland for dinner and to stock up on some groceries. The municipalities I paddled through include the Township of Rideau Lakes which is part of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville and Tay Valley Township which is part of Lanark County. After returning from dinner, I spent the night camping on Colonel By Island in front of the abandoned Danny Arnstein cottage.

    I love all the singing loons. You did well to paddle so many km solo with the wind. When I did this trip with my daughter several years ago I was impressed by that manual solo ferry and all the creative solutions for lifting and anchoring boats and docks. Great video - subscribed!

    The number of kms you do in a day, with crosswinds yet, is impressive. Another good video, looking forward to the rest.

    That's neat that Parks Canada just lets people camp wherever they want on the island and at the locks, and for only $4.90 is a really affordable price!

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  2 роки тому +1

      Ya definitely. Later in the trip I spent one night camping at a Provincial Park, and the price ended up being 11x more expensive than lock station camping!

    • @adventureswithjosie
      @adventureswithjosie 2 роки тому

      @@cjhoyle Wow! Yeah provincial park prices have really gone up over the years, and they don't have any lower prices for people who are just camping with a canoe or bike and a tent.

    7:06 that old bridge abutment was for the Brockville and Westport railway which closed in 1952!

      @@WheelsonaBike Haha going to Perth didn't happen until Day 4. This comment was left on Day 3, so Portland was correct! I probably confused you by responding to a comment that you left a week ago.

      @@cjhoyle Yes! That's most likely what happened. I just left a comment on your latest video, in which you visit Perth. Well then... I need to keep track of my comments. 😂

    When you locked your canoe, how did you secure your paddles? Or do you take them with you into town? Also, when you camp at a lockstation, and go into town, how do you lock your valuables?

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  2 роки тому +1

      When I locked the canoe, I simply placed the paddles underneath of it without locking them. I was much less concerned about them going missing than the canoe. When I leave my tent unattended, I bring all of my valuables with me such as electronics and my wallet.
