In this episode, I was dropped off in Kingston's Confederation Basin Marina at the eastern end of Lake Ontario where I paddling northeast to the Upper Brewers Lockstation. I took the canoe through 7 locks: Kingston Mills - Locks 46/47/48/49, Lower Brewers - Lock 45, and Upper Brewers - Lock 43/44. I paddled through the Cataraqui River, Colonel By Lake and the River Styx. I paddled under a total of 6 bridges including the La Salle Causeway, Hwy 401, CN Railway, Kingston Mills Swing Bridge, Lower Brewers Swing Bridge (Washburn Rd) and Sunbury Road. I also paddled past the Joyceville Institution (a federal prison). The municipalities I paddled through include Kingston and South Frontenac (part of Frontenac County). After arriving at my destination, I spent the night camping on the top side of the Upper Brewers locks.

The canoe is a Bluewater Peterborough 16', made of Kevlar and manufactured in Guelph, ON in the early 1990's. I filmed this video using a Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone. The GPS I used for the trip is a Garmin eTrex 30.

Thanks Josie! The videos are fun to make and it's a huge privilege being able to share my adventures with others.
@@solidfusion316 My day 2 video has now been posted! I'm planning on releasing one video per week.
I’m so glad to hear that you had a great time through the locks, Lower Brewers is definitely one of my favourite places to work. We hope to see you around sometime this year!
Thanks! I'd love to paddle the Rideau again one day :)
Excellent! This is one of my "things" to do when I get the chance to visit Ontario! Anyway always enjoyed your videos!
Thanks, I appreciate it! The Rideau Canal is a beautiful place to visit, I recommend it.
I admire your energy. Look forward to day 2.
Thanks! Video #2 has now been posted :)

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Video 2 has now been posted.
Amazing video!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Hey how ya doing ? I thought I might try doing some of this Rideau river paddling this summer, so I just started watching some videos to learn about it. It looks like fun, and I enjoyed your video, it really helps give me an idea of what it would be like. I'm gonna keep watching your other videos.
I hope I can find a friend or two to go with me, i don't really want to do it alone. Anyways thanks for sharing your adventure !
Whoo hoo. Great video
Thanks!
Did this trip by kayak back in 2018, look forward to the rest of this series.
Awesome!
Awesome video and I look forward to the entire series. Showers are quite the unusual amenity at lock stations. Great to know this lock station has one. I've also never seen the tent/cabins in real life, although I've seen it advertised on a website.
Thanks! I think there's actually a connection between the oTENTiks and the showers. Another lockstation that I encountered later in the trip which had oTENTiks also had showers.
@@cjhoyle That would make sense. You can't offer glamping without showers.
I've been considering canoe sailing the Rideau and found this video to be incredibly informative. Packed with useful information! Not a common feature of paddling videos. Thanks CJ!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I try my best to cram my videos full of as much useful/interesting information as possible.
Glad to see another series of yours on Canadian waterways. The Trent Severn series helped me a lot in planning where to paddle this year. BTW, in my experience when you come to a lock and no staff is around to let you in, you can use your phone, google the lock website and call the phone number to let them know.
Awesome! I'm glad my Trent-Severn videos were helpful to you. Good tip. That's something which occurred to me later in the trip, although I never actually ended up using it. When spending so many hours of the day inside of the canoe, it was actually kind of nice getting to stretch my legs when I would get out to find the lock staff.
Hey cj this trip definitely looks like it was pretty fun. Maybe for your next trip in the future since you know most town close early maybe you should stop to eat dinner around 3 or 4 then continue to the camp site
The trip was definitely a lot of fun! On this particular day of the trip there actually weren't any restaurants along the way. I do very much enjoy stopping at restaurants along the way and supporting their local economies. However, I don't feel it's worth jumping through hoops just for a meal at a restaurant, when packaged foods can serve as an acceptable alternative.
I was just wondering when your next trip will be. Always a pleasure to see. Are you planning any bike trips for the fall?
Thanks! Unfortunately no bike tours for me this year. But if you're looking for a fun bike tour of rural Ontario to follow, I can recommend the UA-cam channel: Wheels on Bike (ua-cam.com/channels/Qu0CzjuHrokNVR3wVv0w8A.html) She's been posting videos from a 7 day bike tour she did this summer which I've really been enjoying.
@@cjhoyle Great recommendation. Thank you! I hope to see you back to doing bike tours next summer!
Hi, really enjoy your videos! What kind of canoe are you using?
I've paddled it twice, same direction. Once solo. Once with a friend. We stopped at the same places as you. So for me, your videos are great. Good job. BTW what make is your canoe? I used my 17' Grumman. Not ideal for solo, but it was what I had. I could have taken a cedar strip, but preferred to bash the Grumman off lock walls. Those things are bulletproof. Once again, good job. I look forward to future episodes.
Awesome, glad you're enjoying the series. The canoe is a Bluewater Peterborough 16', made of Kevlar and manufactured in Guelph, ON in the early 1990's. I used 2 Litre pop bottles as bumpers to protect the canoe in the locks, which work surprisingly well.
Another CJHoyle series? there goes my evening
haha, I appreciate the vote of confidence!
Where do you buy your canoe?
I didn't buy this canoe. It's been in my family for about 30 years (since it was new).
