Imagine you think a guy is really cute and smart and he takes you back to his room and shows you all his cool gadgets and then all of the sudden he shouts “Brad, romantic mode” and then you hear the deafening mechanical screech of his blinds closing as he stares at you waiting for your reaction
while this seems pretty standard today, three years ago home automation was in its infancy, furthermore it seems everything used is quite price sensitive as would be for a student. dope stuff.
Nothing puts a lady at ease like a gentleman telling a robot 'romantic mode', causing the lights to turn off, a giant disco ball to start flashing, and The Lion King soundtrack to start playing. "Um, excuse me, I just remembered I have an important exam in the morning..."
Such an inappropriate joke! Does the fact that the guy had the idea for to renovate a room like this and had put in the effort to make it happen impresses you so little that you feel necessary quip about what's probably satirical joke mode instead?
I am planning a cross continental trip and a friend recommended your blog to me.... I really loved your story and pictures dereklow.co/across-the-usa-by-train-for-just-213/#.WL9BCGU0gKs.facebook
just read your posts about the Suites Class experience on Singapore Airlines, WOW. then see this vid. WOW dude!!! Best dorm room ever! love party mode! haha!
Incredible!!! My daughter hung a "clamp" study lamp to the exposed water pipe in her dorm at UNC Chapel Hill & earned her first violation. LOL. I'm very impressed to have witnessed a college student with more initiative than to just play online games & PS3. You're my new hero!
DMAN D oh I was actually just about to ask u what episode...I'm currently looking for it, searched "GMM best dorm room" but all I found is their episode on a mobile dorm...is that the same one?
Proud Golden Bear (Your video is definitely not Unit 3 where I was at lol), just wanted to drop my 2 cents on awesome work. To the negative comments below, sorry but most people who can do the things this guy did are the rich and successful ones. Keep up the good work brother.
I am super impressed if you are not an engineer! Geekdom has a new meaning at Cal! Yours, Joseph Y. Lee Bachelor of Arts Physics and Applied Math University of California at Berkeley
LOL! Can you imagine walking by and seeing the dorm room flashing like that while the others are not? Imaginations would run wild thinking that a mad scientist or an Avenger was transforming in the room. 😂
What is that type of laser called? I want to buy one too because my room mate used to have one just like that in our old living room and it was great for parties.
Fine.. he's not rich, but he's very well off. He's graduated from Berkeley with some sort of engineer related degree. He's definitely at the VERY minimum making 6 figures, but most likely this guy is making around mid 6 figures.. Sorry, but that's a lot of money. Also he's won many awards for innovation and other things. I'm pretty damn sure that he's gotten offers from many large tech companies.
prinny714 man, even being an engineer you dont have nothing sure, im an engineer and i've had no work offers (even though i got graduated with good notes) good thing i already had a job lol, sad but true
davidhg117 I guess it depends on where you're from and how you go about it when you're in school. I'm not an engineer unfortunately..compared to my cousin that graduated from Berkeley with a CS degree. I got mine in business. Took a lot longer and had to work a lot harder to find a job and even then I don't even make half the amount he makes -__-..
John Muir did many of these same things in 1860. The difference is that he carved everything himself, including every part of the clocks that powered his "alarm clock bed" and his desk, which turned the pages of his books for him, and switched to a different book every half hour.
My history teacher showed me this in eighth grade, if I remember right. Coolest thing ever. Got me into EDM, actually. I graduated high school in 2019 and came back to this for the first time just to feel the nostalgia.
Dude thanks, CAL is a great school. I chose GA Tech over it due to personal reasons, but yea he obviously doesn't know how the things that happen at these schools. Even us geek's have to have fun now and then when we arnt preparing to make solid money
this video might seem abit lame because the dorm looks small as hell, but i think for what its worth you made it your own and thats pretty cool . keep up that amazing skill and one day you might invent something we can all use in our daily basis.
Nice work! I want to do something similar to this. What did you use for active voice recognition like at 1:53 ? Does the computer constantly take input and wait for you to say 'brad'? What programming language do you use for this?
what programming were you using? i have rgb strip lighting hooked up to an Arduino and i love the laser show I ended up just using diffraction grating so i could run a blue laser too...i just cant figure out how to run it all from my laptop tho any help much appreciated!
This is amazing! I wish I had rigged something like this up my freshman year...instead I had a tiny dorm with a horrible roommate. Kudos to you for being so awesome!!
I see that your using MacSpeech Dictate on your computer to manage some settings, but can you tell me how your integrating everything together? Are you using an Arduino board or something similar? I found this really interesting, so anything you could tell me about this project I would really appreciate it.
You should write up how you did all this because it's super awesome and I would love to try to do it but I don't think I have the know-how to put it all together (or the funds for that matter but those can surely be procured some way. Knowledge first!) I’m afraid my level of technological sophistication is painfully low.
Dude, how about an FAQ of how you made this? The parts, the software? I'd like to set up some things like that in my apartment, but the few things I find online about home automation are several hundred or thousand dollars. I heard you built all this for around 700$.
3:00 Lol. You're a funny guy. Continue doing great things like that. Maybe start your own business? I am in the middle of automating my home. I was wondering if were are using wireless technologies?
what I want to know is what you're doing with your room this year and also did cal pay for you to live in the dorms this year because this is probably the best advertising they've ever got
He didn't use any remix of it, just a fadeover to another song called; Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso - Calling W/ Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike - Generation X The part is taken from the soundtrack made to the 'Tomorrowland 2011 Official after movie'. Search and watch here on youtube, a 15 min. long video about the Tomorrowland festival in Belgium. Fantastic festival btw. - Worth travelling to!

Don't forget the curtains closing. Unwanted privacy.
These stuff can be tweaked. That is just a presentation. And ladies come in all type of packaging, some enjoy such stuff :)
But at least they wont turn you down, you know, because the implication.
Such an inappropriate joke! Does the fact that the guy had the idea for to renovate a room like this and had put in the effort to make it happen impresses you so little that you feel necessary quip about what's probably satirical joke mode instead?
Your comment fails to possess the criteria of a yes or no question on the basis of bad grammar.
romatic mode = super bright fluorescent light on a disco ball and a lion king song by elton john....
Stop, you're turning me on!
This video came out as I finished high school, and was what originally motivated me to become an electrical engineer. Thanks BRAD (and Derek)!
"Ridiculously" had to be added to the name to not make it BAD eh? :)
omg this room is the floor above me....
really?
If curtains wouldn't be so noisy, it'd be perfect.
Great job anyway!
Very impressive. Found this your train blog article very informative as well.
+Michael Chernoff I just read that too - great read.
\//\/\
+Michael Chernoff yes! i just read that!
I am planning a cross continental trip and a friend recommended your blog to me.... I really loved your story and pictures dereklow.co/across-the-usa-by-train-for-just-213/#.WL9BCGU0gKs.facebook
emergency party mode ftw
Who will not be annoyed of a Justin Bieber alarm clock? nice touch :)
just read your posts about the Suites Class experience on Singapore Airlines, WOW. then see this vid. WOW dude!!!

@@celia-ov6rm Aaandd 2 years after you here I am for the same reason doing the same thing :)
@@emmaleez :)
Party mode a.k.a "trip your ass off and fuzzy studying for a week"
Incredible!!! My daughter hung a "clamp" study lamp to the exposed water pipe in her dorm at UNC Chapel Hill & earned her first violation. LOL. I'm very impressed to have witnessed a college student with more initiative than to just play online games & PS3. You're my new hero!
Just goes to show how amazing Berkeley students are. :)
Home Alone 3. :D
When all else fails, press the Emergency Party Button
A blacklight in a college dorm room? Baaaad idea buddy.
His sheets are blinding in such low lighting. Weird..
James Calver y
came here from gmm!
i went from gmm to his blog to this
I watch GMM but I didn't see this from that...I searched this cuz I'm going to college in like half a month
Wachi Wachtenheim oh god sorry idk what episode this was so long ago
DMAN D oh I was actually just about to ask u what episode...I'm currently looking for it, searched "GMM best dorm room" but all I found is their episode on a mobile dorm...is that the same one?
Wachi Wachtenheim idk im trying to find if 4 u
it's one thing to do something like this in a regular room, but to pull this off in a triple in one of the units is phenomenal!
great work dude
:D
My guess is Old Derek never got to use the "romantic setting" rather just the "crysturbation setting"
Don't be mean. I'd kill to be in his position.. he's loaded.
dereklow.co/what-its-like-to-fly-the-23000-singapore-airlines-suites-class/
So rich kid bought stuff and is celebrating being a rich kid by posting travel blogs all for conspicuous consumption.
This is VERY time worthy, but also pretty hard. Especially the party and the voice control.
Panpan bamboo You had to be technically very advanced, in order to really appreciate the difficulty of the project.
Proud Golden Bear (Your video is definitely not Unit 3 where I was at lol), just wanted to drop my 2 cents on awesome work. To the negative comments below, sorry but most people who can do the things this guy did are the rich and successful ones. Keep up the good work brother.

oh my god the sound of the curtain it kills me lmao
LOL! Can you imagine walking by and seeing the dorm room flashing like that while the others are not? Imaginations would run wild thinking that a mad scientist or an Avenger was transforming in the room. 😂
The first and last time romantic mode was ever used
Spent a year in Unit 3 in the 90's as a freshman, in a triple room.
I never saw anyone using a dresser as a nightstand. Brilliant.
I came from GMM. :-)
Me2 haha
same
anchio! :D
I bet all the tech firms are lining up to hire this dude. Only a freshman and already doing this. Do I hear a signing bonus?? GG my friend.
i would have a forever alone mode
What is that type of laser called? I want to buy one too because my room mate used to have one just like that in our old living room and it was great for parties.
let me know if you figure that out, thanks
Douchebag roommate pressed the Button every day. :D
This video can serve well in a resume. Take your talent as far as it will go my friend.
Epileptics beware.
What apps and specific items used. I'm surprised there's no list in description. Is there a how to video by chance?
So well designed room yet autofocus not working first few minutes of video. -_-"
Song is Lovers' Carvings by Bibio. The song was also used in Google's Project Glass video.
Yeah, this kid needs a Romantic Mode. That's rather optimistic, don't you think?
Don't be mean. I'd kill to be in his position.. he's rich..
dereklow.co/what-its-like-to-fly-the-23000-singapore-airlines-suites-class/
prinny714 did you read the first parte where he wrote he used the miles he earned from his job right?
Fine.. he's not rich, but he's very well off. He's graduated from Berkeley with some sort of engineer related degree. He's definitely at the VERY minimum making 6 figures, but most likely this guy is making around mid 6 figures.. Sorry, but that's a lot of money. Romantic Mode : Forever alone.
Party Mode: Forever alone.
What a shame.
Lol what a waste jk

LOL "romantic mode"? That geek ain't getting any lol
^obviously can't/couldn't get into Berkeley / doesn't know how Berkeley level colleges are...

I logged-in just so that I could upvote your comment and down-vote NuBmeathax 's. This is the 21st century dude.

One of the coolest things I've seen at Cal. Awesome job, man.
This is why rooming with Engineers is so cool. I plan to study Physics so if I room with a potential Engineer it would be awesome
I Love what you have done with the space!
I am currently working on version 2.0
I hope you enjoyed your flight, looked amazing :-)

The best customised dorm ever....keep it up
Can u tell me where you got the lights for party mode and how you programmed it thanks
"RomanticMode" took a little bit too long to get goin... ide be smoking the cigarette by the time Eltons tune came on !
"Romantic mode!"
SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEECH
How much did this cost to make in total?
Dude, you are an inspiration! I think I'll be making a few changes to my apartment after watching this.
Min. @3:47 whats the name of the lamp that projects those pretty dots? Would really appreciate it if somebody could help me out.
I see that your using MacSpeech Dictate on your computer to manage some settings, but can you tell me how your integrating everything together? Are you using an Arduino board or something similar? great job derek..i am also from spore but living and working here now. u have a great future at the silicon valley.

@dereklmy can you please tell me the type of lights you used for "party mode" please !!!!
OMFG That's gotta be the best room EVER. Congratz dude.
@dereklmy Do you know the name of the slow song at 0:41? Ive been trying to find it for a while now!
AMAZING. SO SMART. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR PHONE CONNECTED WITH EVERYTHING SO THAT IT WOULD WORK OUT?
Dude, how about an FAQ of how you made this? The parts, the software? I'd like to set up some things like that in my apartment, but the few things I find online about home automation are several hundred or thousand dollars. I heard you built all this for around 700$.
Hell yeah. Blinds are a little noisy but definitely the coolest dorm room ever
This is awesome! Great idea and implementation!
hey , this is really cool haha , how did you connect all your devices to the things that have to be done? and how did u do the curtains?
what programing language did you use? and is it made on a computer or a microcontroller?
dude! cool dorm! i remember you had a blog or something. do you have the link?
9gag , facebook , youtube and all of these stuff make me miss the study mode . is there anything called a study mode ?
3:00 Lol. You're a funny guy.
Continue doing great things like that. Maybe start your own business?
I am in the middle of automating my home. I was wondering if were are using wireless technologies?
That is ridiculously AWESOME! I am 100% jelly, bro.
Love the automated system. How did u come up with the Idea?
Hey what's the remix of that Avicii-levels that he used on the party mode ? need it :( tell me pls.
Awesome! I'm so impressed! Can you share your awesomeness by posting a guide on how you did all this?
Very nice room. god, how can you set alll of them. Can you give some technique help? Thank you very much.
FANTASTIC!! Party mode is AMAZING
What was the slow song that plays through most of the regular day modes?
Knew about this because a NYP lecturer shared it during lecture. Thumbs up! Singapore's pride!
I swear, this is amazing. =) Good job man!
Your going viral buddy! Hope the electrical inspection doesn't shut you down!
Man i need an emergency party mode button in my room.
You are all that is awesome. Keep building man.
The only feature I'd think about adding is the control "open the door, BRAD" to which it would respond "I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."
ur gonna have to make a tutorial for all of that and how u made it because thats awesome
what I want to know is what you're doing with your room this year and also did cal pay for you to live in the dorms this year because this is probably the best advertising they've ever got
What's that song called?
lovers carvings by bibo
Would like an easy way to do this in my studio appartement/dorm.. Is there an easy way?
Your amtrak story led me here. I used a Pabst PBR neon light in my dorm window for party mode...it also served well for romantic mode and sleep mode.
He didn't use any remix of it, just a fadeover to another song called;
Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso - Calling W/ Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike - Generation X
The part is taken from the soundtrack made to the 'Tomorrowland 2011 Official after movie'. Search and watch here on youtube, a 15 min. long video about the Tomorrowland festival in Belgium. Fantastic festival btw. - Worth travelling to!
Rivals MIT for sure!
that room is AMAZING!!
the screech of the auto-curtains will drive me nuts. LOL
Did you use some sort of micro-controller when designing this? If so, then what?
this is amazing. now all thats left to do is learn to focus that friggin' camera
"Sleep Mode"
curtains: BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Love the party mode BRAD.....hope you dance up a storm in there! :)
