Garageband is a great DAW. I had released my first album using it and have gotten so many compliments. I released on iTunes, spotify, etc. Of course I took the time to learn some sound engineering. It can be done! I have upgraded some of my instruments from third parties and that helps allot as well. I used to be in a band and we used to rent recording studios and engineers for $50 per hour. Garageband has made my life so much easier. Thanks for defending Garageband Lewin!
@The Branch Discipleship Ministries I've never used Garage Band on an iPad. I've been using a desktop mac. I would think it would have similar capabilities but how much memory does am iPad have to run several tracks?
@The Branch Discipleship Ministries here is the last album that I recorded with Garage Band. ua-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_m5LXYxrf223n177IzmFa7TRWtoOMfxu5I.html
Probably the idea that GB doesn’t sound professional happened because it put recording capability into the hands of virtually everyone. “Everyone” isn’t a pro singer/player/engineer. Some might be, someday, though. Gotta master the tools we have today, in order to improve. Lewin speaks the truth!
Yup I’m one of those people but yah gotta start some where but I’m not sure I’ll get better. Seems my older stuff gets more streams than new so maybe I’m getting worse 😬
Lewin , you are an inspiration to me and to a lot of musicians . I wish I had 3% of your drive and dedication . I'm pushing 40 and fighting a lot of demons and can't seem to get my shit together . I've wasted a lot of time but to be honest I couldn't find the inspiration or drive to create . It's like I have anhedonia . When I watch your videos it does cause a spark in me . Maybe one day it will catch on . Keep doing what you do , brother !!!
The best songs I did I wasn’t inspired and forced myself to work on it. The thing about waiting for inspiration is a fallacy, treat it like work you do a set amount of time a day .
That’s so cool! I love music and I have never imagined I could make my own music ...I just played around GarageBand and I was totally SHOCKED! I love it! My new addiction ...
I personally enjoy logic better now but GarageBand is solid af and can get the job done. Although not completely compatible with many, it still supports some external plugins and shares many of the great features that come with logic. Perfect for composing too. For a free program this is very underestimated
Garageband is just a DAW. What makes a pro sounding record? Great ears, musicianship, production skills, unique musical arrangements (optional in 21st century, so far), great mics, great recording environments with great acoustics, a knowledgeable and musical sound engineer, finely tuned instruments, recording/processing equipment to help capture sound as best as possible, etc........... So can a pro record be made in Garageband? Yes. But this would depend on various other factors.
Happiness unfurls is an amazing song especially for being written and produced in just one day! It astounds me that you had the time to also create a really engaging video. I just wish you would do a break down of your work flow when creating that video. A tutorial on your creative process behind your videos would be greatly appreciated by many of us.
I do use GarageBand for my videos and I know for sure that if you don’t know anything about rhythm your songs won’t sound great. I figured it out myself!
As usual, fucking great! As a musician, singer songwriter, American Roots Music archivist, and expert, I've always loved yo' stuff! As a tv producer, videographer , 3d photo-realistic, renderer and animator, I'm blown away by your video production values!
Bro I watched all ur vids and really believe how GarageBand is all you need thanks to you. I’ve seen ppl put lots of money in professional recordings that are just not worth the time and money. Ur mixes are great every recording I like the way ur bass sounds on all ur recordings it sits really nicely. I have the little boy version (iPad) lol.
GaragebandandBeyond - OK, to support your honesty, hard work ethic, content, and talent, I’m your newest subscriber. FYI I found you from YT searching “GarageBand best covers.” Here’s to you soon reaching that magical 100K subs!
If you have a moment, I just put up 9 video/songs on my page that was recorded solely with a XAir 32 to GarageBand. The drummer mixed it on his Mac. I couldn’t believe how it came out. Absolutely free! Thanks for your content. ✌🏻
Great video. I think GarageBand has been an excellent tool to help myself record and get songs out into the world. But what was said from the top is key. The songwriting has to be solid.
You are very talented man that's for sure, great song writing, playing, vocals, recording! And on GB no less! I may have missed it, but where are the drum tracks coming from?
First song reminds me of The whitest boy Alive. I'm currently using garage band to start producing then I'll change to logic or Ableton but I'm impressed of GB atm I just want to use all the resources of Gb Thanks for doing this series it would be so much helpful greetings from mexico
Wow! I want to learn from you! I have garageband on my mac and it’s sitting for a long time. I got discouraged when I can’t finish and when it sounds not right. I want to watch all of your videos and check your website too!

is logic gonna be a better step? im using garageband and thinking of logic? but still undecided.. nice videos by the way, greetings from the Philippines..
I started with Ableton because it came with my Focusrite interface and I like it,but have nothing to compare it to. I think if the song and producer are good the DAW shouldn't matter that much. I thought about trying Cubase actually, but we'll see. Im a PC user btw. Cheers!
Three videos a week is a huge amount of work. How do you have time for your other girlfriend....(motorcycle)? ;-) Hey I really think you do a tremendously good job of doing this. It's amazing. Thank you for doing it. All my best. Trevor
I love GarageBand! I was always go to upgrade to Logic, but honestly GB does everything I need it to, so I don't really see a reason to "upgrade" to Logic at this point.
Very inspiring work, love the videos too. Have one question. You say that the Slate plugins are worth the investment. Is there a minimum requirement for your Mac to handle it. How many of your tracks can you use it without slowing down the computer. My nightmare would be to pay monthly for something I can only use on a few tracks.
Baci302 Spector was recording and bouncing down tracks on a 4 track tap recorder? The Wall of Sound had much more to do with imaginative arrangements rather than technology.
Hello. Is it possible to create pro sounding music on the ipad verion of gb? Specifically version 2.3.8? I hope you could put up a tutorial for that version. Thanks you, sir. Instant subscriber here.
Hi Lewin, I just came across this "old" video of yours. lol. You raise some really important points. Do you think it's possible to get good/professional results in GarageBand using only its internal/MIDI instruments? In and by themselves, I think GB's internal instruments generally sound quite decent and I'm usually happy with my recordings as I'm working on them. However, when I compare my final results with other music posted online, mine just don't seem to sound as good or as loud. I've been using the Loudness Penalty Analyzer site as a gauge and my recordings are normally in the 0 to -6 range, so this would seem to imply that they're at a "competitive" level... but they never sound as "big" or "open" as other recordings. Even though I try to pay attention to EQ, panning positions and instrument levels, my recordings still seem to sound so puny and squished...no depth. What do you think? Thanks.
Really enjoyed your music but I’m having problems with my Garageband music sounding loud, rich and the same on my car radio like my studio monitors. Any suggestions? To hear the backing music in my car I have to turn the volume up very loud. The mic recorded the Sax is loud and rich but the midi keyboard and guitars are extremely low even when I max them out. I’ve tried turning the Sax mic down but background music still sounds low. Enjoying your music.
he said "if your song still doesn't come out the way you want it, its still not GarageBands fault.. Its your inability to use GarageBand properly." So in other words, if your song is still trash then that's all you pal. Go read a manual. hahaha
The instruments on garbage band sound like crap the guitar don’t even sound like a guitar same with flute and my iPhone mic sounds terrible and no matter what mic I pic on the app it’s just awful and yes my ability not good either 🤦🏾♀️
How much of this video did you watch? Because obviously I'm going to 100% disagree with you. I always say....If you can't your songs recorded and mixed on garageband to sound good, that's not garagebands fault, it's yours.
I still can’t believe your write, record, AND make a music video for all these in 1 day. Incredible.
Check out Steve Lacey he records all his music on garage band
Yea fuck reason lol GarageBand for life

Just kidding 😂
Rock sounds better vocals

No. It does not sound professional. It sounds like anybody that has any kind of free d a w sounds, like it needs to be run through something better
It has the same exact audio engine as logic, so there is zero sound quality difference AND did you even listen to the examples in this video?
