    Looking for a good podcast setup (interview setting) and am between these two. With the G85 I could likely afford to get my full set up with my current budget (mics, camera, lights, A/V extras) but if I went with the sony I would only walk away with the camera. Which would you reccomend?

  • @jamielmp4

    Love this review. I want to make budget short films but not sure which one of these should i purchase. What would you recommend?

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому +2

      If shooting short films my gut tells me the G85. I think Panasonic cameras have more filmmaker features in mind, as Sonys tend to be for more content creation and self shooters. The G85's IBIS will help a lot with handheld shooting and it's a lot nicer to use when behind the camera. If you can afford to I would look into the GH5 as well. This camera is a huge step up from both of these cameras for shooting short films. It's still my main camera today. I have videos comparing the GH5 to both of these cameras as well here:
      GH5 vs G85- ua-cam.com/video/pVFSaqpa-wg/v-deo.html
      GH5 vs a6400- ua-cam.com/video/fWeD0lHT5wk/v-deo.html

  • @AndyLifeInVideo
    @AndyLifeInVideo 3 роки тому +5

    I have the G85 so I'm a bit biased, but I did think that the a6400 showed more detail on your hair during the autofocus test and the color gradients were smoother IMO. If you can learn to wrangle the G85's finicky autofocus or are good at manual focusing, then it's a great 4k camera at an affordable price!

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому +2

      You are right on. The a6400 has what the G85 lacks and the G85 has what the a6400 lacks, so you just have to pick what is most important to you! Thanks for watching!

    I’m leaning more towards Panasonic. The Sonys don’t have a viewfinder for photos, and the swivel screen on the g85 also makes a huge difference. Thanks for the vid!

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому

      It depends on the Sony camera for viewfinders. This one has one, but I wouldn't say it's as nice as the Panasonic's. Maybe should have added this into the video 😂. The flip out screen is much nicer in my opinion and it's quicker to adjust as well. Thanks for watching!

    • @dzheyd9609
      @dzheyd9609 3 роки тому

      Viewfinder on a6400 is crapier but sufficient enough for taking shots. But as a photo camera Sony 6400 is much superrior i think. It can make nice phtos with beatiful boke easier. Because of low light capability you rarely have a blurry shots at the edge of camera capabilities while with pana you do lots of time. And out of camera Sony colors on 6400 are better and pops out.

    M43 is amazing especially when you look at zoom lens 35-70 2.8 (70-200 equivalent) 897.00 if you compare that to the Sony 70-200 your looking at 2300. M43 comes to life with 2.8 or faster glass. And being a content creator the 4k crop photo creates amazing broll without a slider.

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому

      I love my 12-35mm f2.8. I use it probably 90 percent of the time if not more. I would like to try or buy the 35-100mm to pair with it. And the 4k live crop is amazing! I use it all the time for the b roll. Thanks for watching!

    • @JakeMcHugh

      I would say that the G85 would be a sufficient camera in your case if you don't think you will rely on autofocus heavily, but you can always use the app to pull and set focus as well. The Panasonic app is the best camera app out on the market in my opinion and it does help a great deal when you are a solo shooter. The G85 would also be a good choice if you plan on shooting a lot of hand held shots with it's IBIS. Just remember in order to have the weather sealing work with the camera you are going to want to use a weather sealed lens with it. I hope this helps!

    I have to say I appreciate this one. I'm on my way to purchase the GH5. I have more professional video needs. However in my opinion the 6400 is the way to go if your needs do not aquire extensive video production. Later on down the line I'll snatchup a 6400.

      Congrats on the new camera! I agree with you. Both are amazing cameras in their own way, but if you need more professional needs the GH5 is the way to go. The a6400 is great for content creation if you are a solo shooter. Thanks for watching!

    For documentary, where shooting conditions are unknown, would you prefer the sony? Thanks for the great video.. my concern is low light, auto focus, and battery life. Thank you!

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому +2

      If lowlight and autofocus is the biggest concern then the a6400 is the way to go. Battery life isn’t the best with the a6400, but you can always use USB power or a dummy battery with a V mount or NPF Battery to help with that. Something else to consider is the GH5s, it’s better at lowlight than both cameras with Dual Native ISO and has better autofocus than the GH5, but not quite as good as the Sony. It also has better image quality than the Sony, but cost more. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    Just wanted to clarify on the a6400 if I’m using an external monitor just for the monitor but not to record do I lose face detection

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, using an external monitor will cause you to lose face detection and cause the back screen to go black. However, if you use a recorder and disable the internal recording in camera you can override this issue. This video will help explain it more: ua-cam.com/video/kLn8gAGHrDk/v-deo.html
      I personally haven’t tried this on the a6400, but I did use a monitor on it a while back and was still surprised by the autofocus performance without face detection. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      Depends on if you plan on being in front of the camera more times than not. If so, the Sony is much nicer with its autofocus while still taking better photos in my opinion. If you’re shooting others mostly, the G85 is easier to use when behind the camera. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

  • @uHnodnarB

    Might be a bit weird to say, but I think during the walk and talk vlogging section, the A6400 still looked better/more "natural" even though it doesn't have IBIS and thus is necessarily shakier. Some amount of shakiness, I guess, might be what I've come to expect or see as natural, but with dual IS on the Panasonic G85, there are weird shakes in the corner of the video that don't look natural and is not what I would expect from dual IS.

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому +1

      To each their own. I think the bigger issue for me is the Rolling Shutter with the a6400. Cinema cameras don’t have IBIS and you can get some great shots using handheld with those cameras, but they don’t look like the a6400 because it handles the rolling shutter much better. With Dual IS you can get warping in the corners on the wider angles so sometimes you have to turn it off to avoid it, but it really shines when using standard to telephoto lengths. Thanks for watching!

    I hate gimbals. I soooo much hate gimbals. I shoot travel videos and the problem is i have to be versatile. Take a beautiful photo in portrait or picture some action quick. With gimbal its impossible to use the camera as hybrid for photo and video. It takes 5 minutes at least to put and balance even when you get used to it.
    I looove the panasonic and olympus ibis. Its night and day compared to any other system. And the size of that lenses is so sweet for travel. For travel size of lens means much much more than size of the body. Sony apsc has awful camera body. They rarely think about ergonimics. Panasonic has waay better 1080p which is very important too. Buut nevertheless I shoot on sony a6400. Why?
    Because low light. Lots of action happens at night, and its the factor of having somewhat usable footage or none at all. I’d rather have a jerky but footage that i can try to workaround rather than usable black scene.
    And about autofocus. For travel videos with action autofocus on Panasonic g85 is sufficient enough. I had rarely ruined some shots with panasonic in daylight outside or at sunsets etc. it was rarely the problem. So please dont be afraid of panasonic autofocus if you are shooting mostly outside.
    Ps. I shoot travel videos offroad, overlanding, hiking, cargo trains travel and other legal and illegal things

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 роки тому +1

      I get what you are saying for sure. The Panasonic only lacks two things, autofocus and low light, which the Sony has, but the Sony lacks much more at times which the Panasonic all has! Haha so really you just have to pick your poison and create with what you have. Both are great for the money and we are lucky to have the options we have in today’s market. Thanks for watching!

      @noblegendforever2052 3 роки тому

      most gimbal nowaday has lock switch, which allow you to set and mark the balance even when you fold it in travel mode. place camera and on mark spot and ready under 1 minute. ex; g6 max.

      can you help me I'm turn between LUMIX G85 or Fuji XT20

    • @dzheyd9609
      @dzheyd9609 3 роки тому

      @@imnotyourdaddyx Photo Fuji, Video Lumix. Hybrid with more for video then lumix. Need cheap small lenses availability that is good for video, lumix. Most old Fuji lenses are usable for video.
      Need run and gun camera then lumix, because of stabilization. If you shoot a lot low light or indoors in evening then fuji. Ease of use as hybrid Panasonic. Easier and friendlier for beginners. Fuji needs some kind of mastering and understanding.
      Don’t be afraid of autofocus for g85. Yeah, it is terrible. But so does Fuji with its lenses. G85 on bright day wont disappoint you at all. On blue hour without fast prime autofocus unreliable, but you can always switch to manual in those rare cases.
      If you are 80% photo and higher Fuji. If 60 photo and 40 video then G85.
      One thing to consider: the system. If you are from country where people rarely use fuji then may be look at Sony 6100. You can always buy used lenses and save a lot of budget. Panasonic Micro4/3, despite my love for it, has uncertain future until gh6 is released. And if GH6 turns out good then and not tweaked gh5 then no worries. Fuji on the other hand does not have any intentions on leaving x mount. It is a factor if you plan to stick to the system and not the camera.
      Overall g85 is better hybrid camera.

    • @dzheyd9609
      @dzheyd9609 3 роки тому

      I meant unusable old lenses for video for Fuji. Fuji lenses tend to be not cheap, especially those that are good for video, and are desired by most.
