World's First Hydrogen Train - Coradia iLint

  • The Coradia iLint is the first low floor passenger train worldwide, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, which produces electrical power.
This zero-emission train is silent, and only emits steam and condensed water, and any excess energy is stored in ion lithium batteries on board the train.
The hydrogen tank feeds a fuel cell that generates energy, which is then pushed to an electric drive train. A small battery helps maintain power continuity, as well as storing energy saved from regenerative braking.
These new hydrogen trains, can run for about 600 miles or 1,000kms on a single tank of hydrogen, similar to the range of diesel trains, and will run 100-kilometer trips at up to 87 miles or 140 kilometres per hour.
Alstom has made the trains so that they operate in the same way as existing diesel trains, to avoid any culture shock for passengers and crew, except that they need to refuel their 1,000km capacity tanks, at dedicated H2 fueling stations.
    Thanks for watching

Most of the rail in the US is heavy long-range freight hauling, which would be much tougher to tackle with hydrogen fuel cells. Distances, power requirements, and fuel consumption would all be WAY higher than light passenger rail like this, and the infrastructure to switch over nationwide would be a massive undertaking.

Electric trains are also zero emmision and silent
The only difference is this produces electricity via a fuel cell where as an electric train picks up power via overhead catenary and a pantograph.
The question is what energy source is used to produce the hydrogen.
Maybe solar or wind, fossil fuels or even nuclear which is also carbon neutral

It is literally _the_ most common element in the universe.
In fact, out of all the things we can detect in the observable universe, approx 75% is Hydrogen, approx 25% is Helium and what makes everything else - like humans - is, statistically speaking, a rounding error.

I'm a bit nervous about the idea of generating and storing hydrogen to refuel the trains. Also, fuel cells use expensive and rare metals like platinum. A new passenger line just recently opened in my area in California using DMU trains similar to the one in the video. Supposedly they're going to be testing a hydrogen train in about a year. I'm not sure how I feel about it. It's interesting technology, but it still seems a bit dangerous to me.

Hydrogen powered trains aren't really worth the effort in comparison to any other kind of electric train, and even a gas-powered train.
Like natural gas. It's easier to process and acquire normal natural gas. Yeah, hydrogen power works pretty well for commuter and light rail.
But it doesn’t get up to speed at all. It would be cheaper to keep gas in the meantime and electrify more tracks and build electric locomotives than it would be to develop commercial-grade hydrogen trains.

Wondering why they chose hydrogen? The tracks seems to be electrified with overhead lines. Seems like this would only make sense where electrified lines can't be installed or on cargo trains that need a lot more power.

You can electrify trains inside cities, and that is more efficient than hydrogen. But extending the electrical supply for long distances outside of cities is not very practical.

I would have thought batteries would be better since weight doesn't matter so much in trains. Green hydrogen is still very expensive, so I would assume a battery would make long term costs much lower.

    • @RonanB99
