- When the weather says 'high winds and lashing rain' then the best place for a narrowboat is moored securely to the towpath, but I have to move because I need to get to my Christmas destination before time runs out or I get frozen in again! I haven't moved the boat in high winds before so how will I get on? Sit back, relax and enjoy! Take care🦋🌻

Hi Vanessa, I live in Coven, South Staffordshire right by the canal, near to penkridge, Brewood and shrugborough with so much history locally, and a wealth of bird life I can see why you love it, you just can't see it all in just one visit, I hope you return. I was bowelled over with you finding the Goldeneye, I had never even heard of it and it was such a feast to my eyes. When I am gardening I entertain a family of Robins, my favourite bird and I am sure the same family of them has been in my garden for a decade or more. I have found them nesting in my garage, conservatory, shed, tool store, under my work bench and on workshop shelves, behind the tins of paints. After we met, I was digging, he was leaf lifting we were friends for life and he would always be close by looking for lunch.

Extremely beautiful video. I live in America and I tell my friends there is nothing like the British countryside. You bring us wonderful views of it.
You should probably consider a high end set of breathable waterproofs. I find they add considerable warmth while reducing the bulky layers needed because they block the wind and reduce the heat lost to damp or wet clothing.

I just love your poetry and your total oneness with the natural world. I also love to watch the various wild life here in Central Florida. We have lots of great Snowy Egrets, Blue Heron, Sand Hill Cranes, Rosy Spoonbills, and of course Cardinals. You are enjoying your journey to your Winter mooring. Was amazed by those longhorns - horns growing the opposite of our longhorns. What you're calling buzzard, we call hawks. Stay warm! and stay safe!!

In PEnnsylvania we call birds both Hawks and Buzzards with Buzzards being big Hawks !
@BookmavenUSA What we call buzzards are the large large black ugly faced birds that are circling above over a dead animal, in the streets eating dead squirrels, skunks, etc. etc, but always dead that we call "road kill." Our hawks, several varieties, fly high above searching for live animals. They eat rats, mice, small animals and fish, but always live, not dead. They are beautiful birds of prey.@@BookmavenUSA

Just love your positive outlook, it’s been so rainy this week & easy to feel low when things seem gloomy.. lived in Stafford for a few years and went to college there, so nice to see some old haunts like Shugborough Estate. We had a narrow boat moored at Moat House and penkridge for several year's, it is a lovely area! We thoroughly enjoyed our time there!

Brings back memories of my first 10yrs continuous on the cut , I'd cruise in all weather no matter what ....
But now I have a quiet mooring near a famous junction , dry non windy days are cruising days for me now .

We have a single fieldfare visit our garden and has a great time eating old apples on our tree and having serious discussions with the blackbirds its really loads of fun watching the antics, this is the 3rd maybe 4th year its visited, its just the one. Great vlog as always, really look forward to seeing each episode 😀

narrowboat life is such a good life for a dog. Zepher can run along the tow path sniffing everything and exercising herself while you focus on navigating the water knowing she is safe

When Zephyr is on the towpath and I am driving, my husband is with her, but he won't appear on the film as his work's Code of Conduct doesn't allow for a social media presence. Egrets do like to be near water, especially lakes. Amazing birds, so tall. What conditions for you. Zephyr really is your companion. You see a lot of birds on your journeys. Wish birds would appear as not seen any for ages, only a few blackbirds.
If you walk along the canal this time of year with the bare branches and berries, you'll see lots of birds, Vanessa- I promise you. Take care🌻🦋

This vlog was filled with drama. Especially when you got taken by the wind. Glad you made it through the storm. You did not say but I assume you got the throttle cable fixed. When you were doing your imitation of bird calls it reminded me of a new bird I discovered when I was on the phone with my friend who lives in Hawaii he spotted a bird called Io pronounced Eo in Hawaiian I think it was so named by the sound it makes EeeeeOoooo It was a Hawaiian Hawk. That white Egret was truly spectacular We are coming quickly to the start of a brand new year hope it’s a good one I came to the end of your 2022 journal today I liked the way you summed it up by listing your favorite things. Wow! Cruising during stormy weather. While I'm watching, I'm sipping some hot chocolate in my Wise Owl 🦉 mug and wish I could make you a cuppa! ☔🫖☕🍫 At least it was pretty along the way to make your 4 hour-plus slog worthwhile! The great white Egret was quite lovely to see along the towpath the next morning. We have them mostly in southern and eastern USA. I'm not sure if we have Jackdaws or Rooks in America. We do have Ravens and Crows aplenty. Your artist-poet jitters before beginning a new boat journal I can certainly relate to. I haven't drawn anything in a couple of years. I've been waiting since my cataract surgery in October to finally get my new eyeglasses, so I can see clearly again. I'll be inspired to draw, go bird watching, and see the world around me with new eyes!

For a period of time we owned a cabin cruiser and cruised the canal network, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We had thought of purchasing a narrow boat, but I'm glad we didn't because our advancing years has impacted my sense of ballance.

it is good to see that you dress sensibly for the cold wet weather, but do get yourself some warm waterproof gloves. The metal parts of the boat, that you handle, will take your body warmth away faster than anything.

Well, nature certainly brought its all to make the first entry in your new diary as dramatic as possible, and your poem and sketch reflects it perfectly.
I have just spent three days thinking about the first page of my 100 Days-of-Drawing sketch book 🤔🤔 - which is just a bunch of folded paper signatures and a home-made cover and DEFINITELY no chance that anybody will ever take even a sneak-peak look at it - so I can just imagine the pressure on a professional diarist like you when facing that first pristine page of your beautiful new sketchbook. 😊

Nice to see Fieldfares, but they're right bruisers, picking on the smaller Redwings, chasing them off the berries. PS. The first time i saw GWE i may have wet myself. One thing for sure, size wise, ya ca'nt get 'em mixed up with 'owt else. PPS I thought them bickies were "Farleys Rusks". I've never seen the like !

You would love boating down the Rideau Canal, in Ottawa, Ontario, not far from where I live. We have locks after locks. We have taken a drive, following the Canal route. Had many a picnic, dogs included...little Dachshunds. I love that you have your Lab with you.
