- Our 1970s Duster Chopper mini bike looks great and has a reliable and well running Briggs and Stratton 5hp engine, but it's time to take it to the next level! In today's episode, we install new hot rod style 5 spoke wheels with a staggered tire setup, and this vintage mini bike looks AWESOME. We also add a new drum brake, replacing the rigged, faulty disc brake, we add new controls, and modify the seat so that it looks and rides much, much better. Our cheap mini bike always looked great, but now it rides MUCH better, and looks even better too!

You need one of those motorized bicycle fuel tanks to make it even more chopper-like. Or a Honda Monkey tank. Basically any tear drop-shaped tank will work.

I lost the top of my right thumb as a 16yo from a motorbike chain. Heart rate was off the scale!

A bent seat like this one would have had a strap (leather, vinyl, maybe a different color) to go over the crease in the seat cover. The vintage chopper bicycle had a white one. Keep doing what you do!
Loosen the engine bolts and slide the engine forward. Retighten. Had one back in the 70's ! Fun times !!!

The best I recall those mini seats of that day (my day) had a seriously thick wedge-shaped rear section. Many were twice as thick as the replacement you were able to get. Your Bend mod makes it about right
I'm pulling 46 mph with my 3 hp flathead 1070s ARCO. No bs. And its reliable too.
We had a chopper just like that. The ol Stars and Stripes. That thing didn’t have pedal pads or grips. Have a scar on my ankle and my brother has one under the chin from the handle bar. That was 40 years ago. Still remember riding in the yard. O the good old days. Can’t wait till yans get er out and going good.

Oops I meant to respond to the comment about ike putting the chain back on with the engine running. I amputated my own fi ger in the chain of a gokart
@@theoverlanderutv2747 ouch!!! Yea, i should have said something there too, never touch the chain with a running engine. Ive nearly lost a digit on a not running bike picking it up by the sprocket
Wow, thanks for the Memories. I think this is a better JCPenney than the one I had, I could never figure out what was more fun to jump my Stingray or my JCPenney. My Stingray never broke so I guess it was more fun, noooh. If I remember my gas tank was mounted better than yours, I didn't even need a screwdriver to tighten it. I just had to pull on the zip tie!
brought me back to my go cart days . and my five horse Briggs with epoxy block where rod would come threw .

For handlebar grips i use hair spray. Its good lubracant, then dries to a sticky solution when its on. Thats what works the best for me
I'd love to see you guys do a little porting on that engine 😉
A 40 series torque converter setup would make that little thing a rocketship.
30 series my bad. Installed one on my Manco Dingo. Almost like a whole new cart.

They came with a hand brake and a foot brake. The foot brake rubbed against the tire to stop and the hand brake was a disc brake that used the rear sprocket as the rotor. Cat also had one with springs on the forks and a plastic gas tank mounted on the frame like a motorcycle.
I have a purple one with a Honda thumb throttle, Suzuki foot pegs & sprocket, Peugeot seat & predator engine .. she’s eaten many engines over the years ...once had a hot rodded brigs&Stratton 8 push start For long distance street rides .. went 71 mph one time on cat eyes pocket bike tires.
I love this video im been having one of these mini bikes for ever my grandpa got it over 40 50 years ago n now im just starting to work on it again for my son its a old sears bike just like yours i love it rode it for the first time n like 8 years my grandpa n i have so many motors n the back yard trying to get ride of it ant funny wish yall liveed close to me i would love to give some to yall GOD bless yall

It would be neat to see DIY performance mods on this. Cut every other fin off the flywheel. Clean the coil/ hotter plug. Do the 3 degree key in the flywheel

I had the same minibike when I was 13.
Brigs& Stratton 3hp, "flapper plate" brakes, and a chrome square gas tank.
I painted mine "Chevy light blue".
I was a bit heavy then, but it pulled 30+ mph.

I still think some springs under the seat would not only look cool but will be much more easier on th back and prevent sliding back. Keep up the awesome work guys!!!!!!
I figured y'all needed a curved seat like that, but I didn't know about that trick. Them rims and that exhaust tip add just the right amount of new to it. Looks fun! 🙂
2:18 A tip for getting rubber handles off is to pour some rubbing alcohol inside it. It should then slide out quite easily with a bit of twisting and turning.
Well done guys! Now I'm looking for another old mini to build!! Hint, a small squirt of brake cleaner down the screwdriver will help loosen those hand grips.

kinda reminds me of my deathtrap1.0: Chinese scooter frame with a 4 horse i think Briggs engine and a Toro lawnmower rear end making it a trike, dining table chair seat that wasn't bolted down. just like theirs, it struggled to get going from a stand still but i reached 37mph on it! it was fun while it lasted!
Those wheels are the icing on the cake. Now it just needs the 420 race engine with a turbo running E85.

Wrap a hand strap around the seat where the crease is. Use gussets under the back of the seat pan, to tie it into the frame.

Hey, john, and Issac, I'm working on a rototiller from 1971 with that exact engine. not too long ago I found the gas tank had rusted out, and seeing that you took the carb and the gas tank of, I was wondering if I would be able to buy the gas tank and carb assembly off of you because replacement parts don't exist for that engine anymore. I live in North Carolina as well so I can pick it up if needed. thank you and keep up the great work. P.S. say hi to Leroy for me

I was always told 1 tooth change on your top gear is equal to roughly 3-4 teeth on your bottom gear. If you don't want to go through the hassle of changing that bottom gear, put a smaller gear on your clutch. Love the video... giving me the itch to get my old mini bike from my youth that is collecting dust int he attic out and give her a once over.

Runs great. Y’all touching the plug to stop it from running reminds me when I was a kid I was mowing the grass bear foot after a rain. With our push mower flipped the metal tab to cut it off. It got me good. Thanks for the video as always I enjoyed it.
The angle on the seat helps, but I still think that springs under the back of the seat and a pivot up front would be a huge improvement

Build a long chopper. High sissy bar,with a pipe following it to the sky. Ape hanger bars....you can do it.
About 25 years ago, I had one just like it. Alas, I destroyed the original engine, but later replaced it with an old school B&S Animal.

Hair spray works real well for removing and putting on grips pry up the grip a little spray it work it comes right off. Spray the inside of the grip before you put it on. Slides right on and drys sticky
You should put a vinyl hand strap across the fold in the seat to make it look better.
the best way to get power from a flathead is to increase flow. do a port and polish and a minor eyebrow shave. that motor will haul you around with no problem after that. i did that to a 5 hp lawmower and I got some great results.
Repaint the thing bright racing orange and it would look mint 👌

Naiz bike! Those tabs holding the rear wheel seems to be original, maybe the problem with the chain coming of? Make a more solid plate, and weld it in instead, takes 10 minutes.

You should put a tillotson 212 on it, or do a Briggs build like you guy's guys did on the rat rod wagon.
The trick for hand grips is wd-40. It lubes for a few minutes, then by the next day they are bonded to the metal bars.
Im not sure how common west bend 820 engines are there but would be neat to see a build on one for that bike.
Wonder if you could hinge the front of the seat and put some springs on the back for added ride comfort, a bit like a ride on mower seat.
