I'm with you there. That big chord in the middle used to give me shivers. It still does. Nothing, nothing like then Tornados. I still play them regularly. And, yes, a different world...dangers out of sight but still there. But to us...innocence!

For so many years, I thought 'Telstar' was the only Tornados'hit, but only fairly recently I discovered so many other songs like 'Globetrotter' and this one. What wonderful tunes - If I ever got to travel back in time, it would be to the studios where they produced these magical songs....

True. Who would ever consider the use of a clavioline as the primary instrument of a piece? The Tornadoes also hold, as many know now, the distinction of being the FIRST UK group to land a song at #1 on the US charts with Telstar in late 1962. Producer Joe Meek was a true innovator of their sound, and the group might have had more chart success, had it not been for the Advent of the "Mersey Sound", which foreran the "British Invasion" which shunted aside many good and great artists of the pre 1964 era.

One of the last Tornadoes singles released received little air time and disappeared into the mists of time, but still made good use of that unique sound, and a melody that probably sounds better today than it did at the time of its release, that was "Monte Carlo". No never released as a single. I agree one of their best tracks and would have done well as a single if issued at the right time. Unfortunately the group had a relatively short window of success as pop music fashion changed about a year after Telstar, with the advent of Beatle mania and the Mersey sound. After that their records struggled to make the charts, but they carried on making great music into the mid sixties.

@@GWAYGWAY1 Spot on summary Graham. One of the only re-masterings that got it right. was a series made from the Norman Petty Masters of some Buddy Holly and instrumental tracks by the String-a-longs. It took a superb and dedicated engineer to transfer these especially fine Mono Masters to CD with that 'special' Analouge sound. It can be done, but they have to want to spend that essential extra time - and the engineers have to have a loving 'feel' for Anolougue mono.
