I saw Lester Holt in the picture and thought I was going to hear something different. You showed a picture of Dion instead of Tommy Allsup. Buddy's hits were on Coral Records and Brunswick. Decca might have been the major owner of these companies but only one album has ever appeared on Decca which had the original version of That'll Be The Day and old cover songs. As for the glockenspiel, it belonged to Norman Petty's wife and Buddy liked the sound so she played it on Every Day, the flip side of Peggy Sue. As for dark secrets, there were none really. Buddy became independent when Petty wouldn't pay royalties he owed Buddy. A lawsuit was pending when Buddy was killed. Buddy's widow carried on with the lawsuit but Petty's name was on all the Clovis recordings so he was free to release any records made in his studio. Love Is Strange was one of the tapes Petty reworked by adding strings and extending the 2 verses to 4 plus adding a bridge . It fits very well with Buddy's guitar. Maria might have had a falling out with Buddy's family but I do know she left them and Norman Petty out of The Buddy Holly Story. Paul Mccartney's Real Buddy Holly Story ,a documentary, is much better as Jerry Allison and the other original Crickets are in the film. So is Buddy's family. Maria is mentioned once. As for the fortune teller...well I have never heard or read that before. But it's possible I guess. ❤❤❤

And I've also heard that it wasn't true because Buddy chartered the plane for him, Waylon, and Tommy but Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper who was sick asked to fly instead.. Ritchie lost the coin toss. The Big Bopper just asked Waylon to swap places with him. There was only one coin toss..

His dark side consists of arguing with his brothers (much like everyone ever - that had brothers) and occasionally being slightly naughty at school (much like almost everyone who ever went to school). He also had a say in his own career and did all the hard work himself. Had the link for this video said “Buddy Holly was exactly as great as you always thought he was” I would’ve still clicked. He was someone very special and it hurts to think what more he could’ve achieved. RIP

Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison had three things in common. they both were from Texas. they were known for their glasses. and they both were extremely talented and skilled musicians.

I was riding on a school bus the morning after Buddy Holly's plane crashed. On hearing the news on the radio, I was crushed. I'd become a fan of Buddy. Later in the summer of 1999, I had a business trip to Minneapolis, MN. My drive took me past the spot where Buddy's plane crashed. It was a sobering moment.

He was very good to our family, and always spoke well of his long-dead friend, Buddy Holly. I visited Buddy's grave in Lubbock once, and the Fender guitar was in fact carved on it. J.I.'s first wife was the actual Peggy Sue.

Buddy Holly, along with The Everly Brothers were vital to the development of modern rock and pop music. Their influence on the likes of The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel was immense.
Mick Jagger saw Buddy Holly in concert as a kid. Buddy, Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins...those are the forces that culminated in the British invasion. Additionally, The Stones' sax player, Bobby Keys, knew Buddy from around Lubbock as a kid, and played on "Return to Sender" for Elvis. As great as Buddy was, and he most certainly was, but to a lot of people, they forget that Valens and Richardson were part of that tragedy. The film La Bamba made people aware for aware, but it's far enough removed from the public collective memory, a lot of people have don't even know who they are. Very sad. And Peterson...forget about it. No one bud us music geeks know who he was.

I've been a fan of buddy holly since I was little kid. Had the privelage of visiting the ballroom where he did his last concert and the crash site. Still listen to his music, it'll never die.😢😊
The part about his glasses surprised me the most...most of the time, a person who wears glasses either has them on or very near by...for not finding them for years and where the glasses were found is very interesting. Favorite song of mine is "Maybe Baby." 🙏 RIP BUDDY HOLLY 🙏
Buddy's glasses were lost in the crash. A few months later as spring approached, the farmer was out preparing his field for planting. Since the snow had melted, he found the glasses and turned over to the Sheriffs office. They were placed in a manilla envelope marked 'Charles Hardin Holly'. There they stayed for a little over 20 years until a new sheriff was elected. That sheriff decided he was going to clean out the courthouse. In a file cabinet, in the basement he found the aforementioned manilla envelope. He gave the glasses to Buddy's parents. Then the widowed sued and won.
I always heard the same . Buddy's glasses were found by the farmer. He turned them in to the Police but it was years before they were turned over to the family. In a way,I think the family should have got them but Maria donating them to the museum was probably the right thing to do. That's better that what Yoko did with John's glasses She sold them which outraged Paul Mccartney..I heard later that Paul had got them and placed them in a museum but it was probably just a rumor.
A couple of photo editing errors here are problematic. The photo at 1:14 is not of Holly and partner Bob Montgomery but a picture of Buddy with my late friend, the legendary Vancouver Disc Jockey, Red Robinson, taken in 1958. The photo recounting Richie Valens' coin toss with Tommy Allsop is a photo of Dion Dimucci who actually was also on the tour. Try to get it right you guys, ok?
Buddy was immensely talented. Not to knock Elvis, as he was GREAT, but he never wrote one song. Never produced one either. Buddy did it all. Also, he was a MASTER guitar player, in the same class as Hendrix, Clapton, and Page for his time. The guitar, for Elvis, was mostly just a Prop. I was too young when he died and only learned about him after years and years. Every year, he is honored in England as he has his very own "Hollyday," where his music is played exclusively. Paul McCartney has attended this event, and credits naming "The Beatles" after the success of "The Crickets", both insects. Also, The Hollies were named after Buddy. Both are honors that Elvis cannot claim. His Legend will live FOREVER.😀😀😀😀

It’s been said that the very few people who’ve listened to The Velvet Underground formed their own bands. Well, some talented people who’ve listened to Buddy Holly formed the GREATEST rock acts of all time, like Bob Dylan, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to name a few (the first Beatles recording, still in their teens as The Quarrymen, was a rendition of ‘That’ll Be The Day’) . The Crickets were the blueprint for every subsequent rock band to this day, Buddy Holly was the first true complete artist in rock history and ‘The "Chirping" Crickets’ was the best rock album of the 1950s.

❤ Buddy wasn’t a master guitarist as someone wrote here. He wrote very good pop rock tunes. Some were among the best ever published. Buddy was terrific at being an arranger, and was innovative with sounds long before anyone else in the rock world. Buddy also had a great talent for taking a melody and creating a beautiful guitar solo which was influenced by the melody but was a Variation on it. Before that you often heard a guitarist or piano player simply play the song’s melody, or something very similar to it, during the solo section if there was one. His song structure influenced Lennon and McCartney more than anyone else. And since they were emulated by editions from the mid60s onward we can say that all of pop or pop rock music that would also include southern rock etc., has its roots in buddies ideas. That by the way it’s not an exaggeration that’s not hyperbole it’s the truth.

I was 15 when Buddy Holly died. He was my idol, more so than Elvis. I was in a singing duo in Brooklyn, NY called the Taylor Kids, with my partner Carl Pace. We were Everly Brothers wannabes. We had a manager called Jay Fishman. He phoned me and said, "Did you hear he news, Buddy Holly died?" I told him I was very sad and cried about it. He came back with this unbelievable statement, "Well, look at it this way, there's more room at the top now." We fired him.
I bought an eight track tape of Buddy's greatest hits back in the 70s and played it all the time. It was one of my favorite albums back then. I still love his music but the 8-tracks are all gone now.
Interesting! He was breaking free from the record companies and then he died. This may have been the first fime a musician was sacrificed but given he wasn't the last; remember there is the 27 club. The same goes for Jimi Hendrix who was going to leave his manager and whose autopsy showed so much wine in his lungs the coroner said he had to have drowned in a pool of wine and Janis Joplin dealer said the "government" came to him and told him that if he didnt sell her this packet of heroin hed spend the rest of his life in jail. I consider Buddy Holly the best in Rock and Roll history. He's a good and prolific composer, singer. guitarist and innovator. He pioneered the dubbing of his own voice. He's ahead of his time that's why he was not recognized fast as a recording artist. He inspired me since I was a kid. He likewise inspired me to be the lead guitarist of a band. I collected all his cassettes and cds. His glasses are iconic
Les Paul came had an Ampex 8 track recorder installed in his home back in 1957 for a princely sum so NO Buddy Holly was not the first to overdub recordings.

Paul McCartney did not like "The Buddy Holly Story". So, McCartney made his own version called "The Real Buddy Holly Story"1987..I think that Paul was very sincere in educating people about Buddy's life in this documentary. I definitely recommend it!!
My oldest sister-in-law was present for that final concert at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. Tour schedules seem to have an iron grip on artists, with no allowance for bad weather or break downs. This is just wrong, as it is inhumane. So many have perished from accidents or become addicted to drugs because of the relentless pressure and little time for rest.
I was at the 2009 "50 Winters Later" Dance Party on Feb. 2nd, 2009 at the Surf Ballroom. It was quite a party. Went to the crash site the following day. It was a sad and somber occasion. Buddy will not be forgotten any time soon, not should he be.

I've heard Buddy was the pioneer of using two guitars, bass, and drums. My Buddy faves are True Love Ways and It Doesn't Matter Anymore. It's well-known Buddy influenced the Beatles but IMHO Ritchie had at least a little influence on the Beatles. The opening riffs of Labamba and Twist and Shout are very similar, just Twist and Shout is slower.

Buddy Holly definitely needed glasses to see; his visual acuity was 20/800 in both eyes. Without glasses, he couldn't read the large letter E at the top of the eye chart.

I was riding on a school bus the morning after Buddy Holly's plane crashed. On hearing the news on the radio, I was crushed. I'd become a fan of Buddy. Later in the summer of 1999, I had a business trip to Minneapolis, MN. My drive took me past the spot where Buddy's plane crashed. It was a sobering moment.

J.I. Allison, the Crickets' drummer, was Buddy's friend in Lubbock. He helped my brother get his first record album contract. He was very good to our family, and always spoke well of his long-dead friend, Buddy Holly. I visited Buddy's grave in Lubbock once, and the Fender guitar was in fact carved on it. J.I.'s first wife was the actual Peggy Sue.

Mick Jagger saw Buddy Holly in concert as a kid. Buddy, Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins...those are the forces that culminated in the British invasion. Additionally, The Stones' sax player, Bobby Keys, knew Buddy from around Lubbock as a kid, and played on "Return to Sender" for Elvis.
As great as Buddy was, and he most certainly was, but to a lot of people, they forget that Valens and Richardson were part of that tragedy. The film La Bamba made people aware for aware, but it's far enough removed from the public collective memory, a lot of people have don't even know who they are. Very sad. And Peterson...forget about it. No one bud us music geeks know who he was.

The part about his glasses surprised me the most...most of the time, a person who wears glasses either has them on or very near by...for not finding them for years and where the glasses were found is very interesting. Favorite song of mine is "Maybe Baby."

Well, he was thrown violently out of a crashed airplane, so I don't imagine he had them on when his body was discovered.
Buddy's glasses were lost in the crash. A few months later as spring approached, the farmer was out preparing his field for planting. Since the snow had melted, he found the glasses and turned over to the Sheriffs office. They were placed in a manilla envelope marked 'Charles Hardin Holly'. There they stayed for a little over 20 years until a new sheriff was elected. That sheriff decided he was going to clean out the courthouse. In a file cabinet, in the basement he found the aforementioned manilla envelope. He gave the glasses to Buddy's parents. Then the widowed sued and won.

I always heard the same . Buddy's glasses were found by the farmer. He turned them in to the Police but it was years before they were turned over to the family. In a way,I think the family should have got them but Maria donating them to the museum was probably the right thing to do. That's better that what Yoko did with John's glasses She sold them which outraged Paul Mccartney..I heard later that Paul had got them and placed them in a museum but it was probably just a rumor.
A couple of photo editing errors here are problematic. The photo at 1:14 is not of Holly and partner Bob Montgomery but a picture of Buddy with my late friend, the legendary Vancouver Disc Jockey, Red Robinson, taken in 1958. The photo recounting Richie Valens' coin toss with Tommy Allsop is a photo of Dion Dimucci who actually was also on the tour. Try to get it right you guys, ok?
Buddy was immensely talented. Not to knock Elvis, as he was GREAT, but he never wrote one song. Never produced one either. Buddy did it all. Also, he was a MASTER guitar player, in the same class as Hendrix, Clapton, and Page for his time. The guitar, for Elvis, was mostly just a Prop. I was too young when he died and only learned about him after years and years. Every year, he is honored in England as he has his very own "Hollyday," where his music is played exclusively. Paul McCartney has attended this event, and credits naming "The Beatles" after the success of "The Crickets", both insects. Also, The Hollies were named after Buddy. Both are honors that Elvis cannot claim. His Legend will live FOREVER.😀😀😀😀

❤ Buddy wasn’t a master guitarist as someone wrote here. He wrote very good pop rock tunes. Some were among the best ever published.
Buddy was terrific at being an arranger, and was innovative with sounds long before anyone else in the rock world.
Buddy also had a great talent for taking a melody and creating a beautiful guitar solo which was influenced by the melody but was a Variation on it. Before that you often heard a guitarist or piano player simply play the song’s melody, or something very similar to it, during the solo section if there was one.
His song structure influenced Lennon and McCartney more than anyone else. And since they were emulated by editions from the mid60s onward we can say that all of pop or pop rock music that would also include southern rock etc., has its roots in buddies ideas. That by the way it’s not an exaggeration that’s not hyperbole it’s the truth.
Buddy Holly and Chuck Barry to me are the architects of Rock n Roll music as we know it. No Buddy,no Barry No Rock!!!

I was 15 when Buddy Holly died. He was my idol, more so than Elvis. I was in a singing duo in Brooklyn, NY called the Taylor Kids, with my partner Carl Pace. We were Everly Brothers wannabes. We had a manager called Jay Fishman. He phoned me and said, "Did you hear he news, Buddy Holly died?" I told him I was very sad and cried about it. He came back with this unbelievable statement, "Well, look at it this way, there's more room at the top now." We fired him.
I bought an eight track tape of Buddy's greatest hits back in the 70s and played it all the time. It was one of my favorite albums back then. I still love his music but the 8-tracks are all gone now.

A good friend of mine and I were at work talking about Buddy Holly and Elvis. I told him that Holly would out do Elvis if he had lived. For a second I thought our friendship was about to hit bottom. It didn't though.

I consider Buddy Holly the best in Rock and Roll history. He's a good and prolific composer, singer. guitarist and innovator. He pioneered the dubbing of his own voice. He's ahead of his time that's why he was not recognized fast as a recording artist. He inspired me since I was a kid. He likewise inspired me to be the lead guitarist of a band. I collected all his cassettes and cds. His glasses are iconic
Les Paul came had an Ampex 8 track recorder installed in his home back in 1957 for a princely sum so NO Buddy Holly was not the first to overdub recordings.

That was a great movie. I believe the orchestral part of True Love Ways might have been added after Buddy died.
Paul McCartney did not like "The Buddy Holly Story". So, McCartney made his own version called "The Real Buddy Holly Story"1987..I think that Paul was very sincere in educating people about Buddy's life in this documentary. I definitely recommend it!!

My oldest sister-in-law was present for that final concert at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. Tour schedules seem to have an iron grip on artists, with no allowance for bad weather or break downs. This is just wrong, as it is inhumane. So many have perished from accidents or become addicted to drugs because of the relentless pressure and little time for rest.
I was at the 2009 "50 Winters Later" Dance Party on Feb. 2nd, 2009 at the Surf Ballroom. It was quite a party. Went to the crash site the following day. It was a sad and somber occasion. Buddy will not be forgotten any time soon, not should he be.

"At the time, Holly and Santiago had been married for only six months, and she learned of his death from the reports on television. As a result of psychological trauma from the incident, Santiago miscarried with her husband's child on February 4. Her husband was interred in Lubbock.
Santiago-Holly did not attend the funeral and has never visited the grave site. In a February 7, 1959, interview with the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, she said, "In a way, I blame myself. I was not feeling well when he left. I was two weeks pregnant, and I wanted Buddy to stay with me, but he had scheduled that tour. It was the only time I wasn't with him. And I blame myself because I know that, if only I had gone along, Buddy never would have gotten into that airplane."
Following the miscarriage suffered by Santiago-Holly and the circumstances in which she was informed of his death, a policy was later adopted by authorities not to disclose victims' names until after their families have been informed."

Dark secrets? Not so much.
I've heard Buddy was the pioneer of using two guitars, bass, and drums. My Buddy faves are True Love Ways and It Doesn't Matter Anymore. It's well-known Buddy influenced the Beatles but IMHO Ritchie had at least a little influence on the Beatles. The opening riffs of Labamba and Twist and Shout are very similar, just Twist and Shout is slower.

Buddy used overdubbing and early tape recorders to create many of his later works. He was inspired to do so by studying tbe recordings of Les Paul.
As huge of a Beatles fan I am, I truly belive that if Buddy would have live the Fab Four wouldn't have had the impact they had in 1964.

His 1956 recordings on the Complete Buddy Holly CD collection are great underknown tracks (Changing All Those Changes, Blue Days, Black Nights...)

Buddy Holly seemed like a regular guy who made it good, thats what i liked, he appreciated his fans and his fans appreciated him, i wish i could have heard all 3 of them play in person, im glad you mentioned the pilot, he tragically lost his life and also had a grieving family

Interesting you say that, looking at the photos of Buddy, I often wondered if the glasses were part of "the image" he wanted to portray to his fans. 🤔
Buddy Holly definitely needed glasses to see; his visual acuity was 20/800 in both eyes. Without glasses, he couldn't read the large letter E at the top of the eye chart.
No need to put one down over the other...Elvis and Buddy were both superstars in their own right with totally different sounds and styles....forever etched in the history of music!
Elvis' advantage was that he had a manager who know how to exploit his star.
