Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on UA-cam, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on UA-cam. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on UA-cam, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.

This is a master class in song writing. Love Jim’s voice. Maury’s guitar playing is spectacular.

Jim wrote this song during his time in the service. Watching guys who had received Dear John letters lined up at the pay phone trying to call their girl. Love your reaction. ✌️♥️🎶

Jim Croce and Harry Chapin - two of the greatest storytellers - both died tragically, and far too soon. RIP - the world is a sadder place without them. Thanks so much for doing this reaction. FYI, his son AJ is continuing the tradition started by Jim by covering his songs and producing his own material as well. Here's AJ doing this same track on the 40th anniversary of its original release. He explains the lyrics as an intro: ua-cam.com/video/_BDRAMAaM3c/v-deo.html

From the first time I ever heard this song, I ALWAYS tear up because I KNOW what he was voicing, and how the people who wrote this for were feeling ... let's just leave it at that 😢🤧!!!

Jim and Maury, what a tragic ending, but they made some beautiful music together.

Great and thoughtful reaction! As some others have noted, Jim was writing not about his own loss of a relationship but of the losses of others with whom he was in an army training camp that allowed the trainees to line up at certain times of the week to place calls in a pay phone; Jim would see and hear the struggles of some of the others, so he imagined what they might be saying and feeling. That ability to empathize is one of the qualities that can make someone a masterful storyteller, whether it be as a writer or musician. Jim does that a lot in his songs, imaging himself in the shoes of someone he's met, a quality I relate to because I am a writer.
A word about Maury: he really raised he bar of quality on Jim's musicianship, Maury's fingerpicking really elevates the music too, and his soft and gentle voice, and willingness to always be the one singing backup harmonies, brought out the best in Croce.

I remember where I was, and what I was doing when the news came over the radio, while I was working on my truck, and listening to the AM Rock station in the 1970s. I just couldn't believe it. He was just starting to take off like a rocket in the music world, and then like so many other music and movie stars, they die in a plane crash. I instantly thought of the incident in the mid 1950s, when Rock just started. Buddy Holley, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens all killed after a Rock show in a small plane, going to their next gig. The plane crashed in an Iowa corn field in the middle of the night in a driving rainstorm. And now this.
This man was so talented. Just like the great young actor James Dean, they will be forever young in our minds.

I agree with below, you definitely need to react to "Time in a Bottle". Some other good ones to react to are: "I'll have to say I love you in a song", "Photographs and Memories" and "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown".

Thank goodness someone gets it.... the song is sad but equally as sad as the song is the countless reaction videos related to the song where people just seem to completely miss it. They missed the simple fact that it is a super super sad song... raw well-written.. honest, candid and, most of all, vulnerable.

You got it on first listen. The only thing you might have gotten wrong is the match book thing. In the years before cell phones, when you met someone you would grab matches from the counter and write a phone # on them to keep it safe till you could write it in your book at home.

Every time I hear this song I'm brought back to the seventies - I was in the ski club in high school and they were playing this over the speakers for the people on the slopes!

Pure talent and musicianship on display here. The songwriting - melody and lyrics...the playing by both Jim and Maury (Maury, literally Jim's right hand man during his career, who sadly perished in the September 20, 1973 plane crash with him)...the vocals, both Jim's solo and Jim's/Maury's harmony and phrasing, along with their ability to convey the lyrics. To balance Jim's prowess as a balladeer, I highly recommend your next reaction down the Jim Croce rabbit hole should be "Roller Derby Queen" -- with it's funky, bluesy music and comical lyrics. Jim perished when I was 11 years old and I write today as a 61-year old preparing to remember him in-memoriam on the upcoming 50th anniversary of his tragic and too-soon death. Rare has been the month or even week in all these years that I have not listened to at least one Jim Croce song.

Wow. Fifty years since he died. You just made me feel old - and I hate to break it to you but I’m the same age as you. We’re twice as old as he was when he died. I think about some of the songs he wrote in his short life and I can’t help but wonder what else he would have written over the years if he were still alive. What songs would have been inspired by his different experiences and stages of life? I imagine his talents as a songwriter, singer, and musician aging like a fine wine. I wonder if he would have ever teamed up with his son. Sad. All that talent and potential lost so suddenly.

A friend of mine and I played and sang this as a guitar duet at a high school talent show back around 1976. My friend had figured out both guitar parts note for note and we killed it. We won second place to my rock band that played Stairway to Heaven. ☺️ This song brings back massive memories for me. Great review channel btw!

This has nothing to do with the music, but I enjoy your reviews. You look a lot like a friend I knew 35-40 years ago. You also have his mellow, kind mannerisms.
This is great music. Glad you really try to hear classics, things that used to be hits, not obscure tracks.
You nailed the meaning of the song. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether the number being on a matchbook cover means the couple are currently living in a hotel. But that's a side issue.

Good reaction, but you missed an aspect that I think is important. In the second verse there is the line: "it happens every time," relative to the tears. I think it means he has tried to make this call several times before and can never carry it off. A broken man.

If you want one for fun, You would love "Rapid Roy the Stock Car Boy!"".
" He got a tatoo on his arm that say baby, and another one that just say hey"
"And every afternoon, he's a dirt tract demon in a '57 Chevrolet.". Don't make lyrics like that too often.
