    Shon, welcome to the Jim Croce rabbit hole. It’s not as deep as others as we lost him to an airplane crash way too early. He left behind his wife Ingrid and toddler son A.J. He was a great story teller, like Harry Chapin who in the next decade would also be gone too soon. Some more Croce to explore would include, Time In A Bottle and Bad Bad Leroy Brown. There’s more this is a great start. Well done!
    Joe

      Jim's son, AJ is now performing his dad's songs and does an excellent job of it. His life continued to be very tragic after losing his dad as a baby. His mother moved in a boyfriend who beat AJ so severely, he went blind. You can see father and son singing together virtually in this TV special. ua-cam.com/video/tunthj57yDU/v-deo.html

    Another great folk rock singer songwriter who we lost so young. This is the music I grew up with. Unique storyteller & ballad singer. He touches your soul. He had a lot of great hits in his short career. "Time In A Bottle", "Photographs & Memories", "Bad Bad Leroy Brown", "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "I Got A Name", "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues," "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song", "Roller Derby Queen", "Rapid Roy", "Lover's Cross" etc.

    I watched a documentary about Jim Croce. He wrote this song when he was stationed in Fort Jackson South Carolina (where I am from) He was waiting to use the pay phones to call home and heard someone having this conversation. It's only one of his best songs. Sadly he died before we heard more from him.

    Jim Croce was a insane talent, grew up with my dad playing him all the time. Jim's story is an interesting yet sad one, his son who also went into the music industry has just in the past few years starting performing his dads music and sounds a lot like him, its kinda crazy.
    As for the song Operator I found this. "The story was inspired during Croce's military service, during which time he saw lines of soldiers waiting to use the outdoor phone on base, many of them calling their wives or girlfriends to see if their Dear John letter was true.

    Listened to Jim when he arrived. What a super talent. Youngsters today may not know that we used to access long distance calling via an operator, a real person.

    • @terri2494
      @terri2494 Рік тому +3

      And at the time it cost ten cents to make a call at a phone booth, but that was only for three minutes, I think. I couldn’t remember if it was three or five but then I remembered “Sylvia’s Mother”, where “the operator says 40 cents more for the next three minutes.” I guess that was a long distance call, back when they cost a lot more than local calls. That’s two great songs from 1972 that mention phone operators.

    Jim Croce was one of my favorite singers when I was a kid. He was a fantastic storyteller and all his songs had great melodies that you could sing a long to. "You don't mess around with Jim" is another one of my favorite songs from him. "Roller Derby Queen" wasn't a single of his but it is a great song too!

  • @KC-gy5xw
    @KC-gy5xw Рік тому +10

    Jim Croce, a great songwriter and singer. Time In A Bottle is my favorite of his with I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song. Beautiful singer.
    Robbie Robertson (RIP) from The Band (and Bob Dylan's backing band, also a great individual songwriter) and Sixto Rodriguez, (RIP) "Sugarman" - a singer who never realised he was HUGE in South Africa and never knew about it until about 15 years ago. Check out the documentary "Searching for Sugarman" - two excellent songwriters and singer. Plus my man, Bobby Caldwell, he died a few months ago. What. A. Singer. Leo Sayer, criminally underrated.
    I must say, it's nice seeing a young man reacting to great music with appreciation. I owe it to my two older brothers sitting me in front our our old Decca gram stereo (seated at optimal position in front/centre/distance) to hear the stereo bit - my reaction to Yes album was legendary in my family) and I heard EVERYTHING from the age of 0 to 15. that's in the 60s/70's.

    What he means by "I only wish my words could convince myself, but that’s not the way it feels". Is not that he wishes his girl didn't run off with his ex best friend. He means that he wants to call her just to say, that he's doing good, and it doesn't bother him anymore. He's basically lying to her, but he knows he can't lie to himself, and he is still in a lot of pain.

    Love this song! Thanks for covering it, Shon. Jim, unfortunately, didn't live long enough to develop a deep back catalog (due to plane crash), but the songs he put out in such a short time were very popular. Jim was a great guitar player and his sideman, Maury Muehleisen, was incredible. I love "Time in a Bottle", but his other hits like "You Don't Mess Around with Jim" and "Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown" are very fun.
    As for the origins of this song, Jim was in the Army and they often had to wait at pay phones on base to call their girlfriends, families or whoever. Oftentimes, soldiers get "Dear John" letters from their sweethearts breaking up with them while they're away, so he was inspired to write this song.

    Harry Chapin (Chay-pin) was another legendary songwriter/singer from around the same era, who also had an ultimately demise ( single car accident). He's probably best known for the two epic tracks: "Cat's in the Cradle" & "Taxi".
    (" It was raining hard in 'Frisco,
    I needed one more fare to make
    my night,
    A lady up ahead waved to flag me
    down,
    She got in at the light.....")

  • @terri2494
    @terri2494 Рік тому +1

    I was ten when this came out. I never thought that he actually changed his mind about talking to the person he was trying to reach. (Someone in the comments said it was his ex who cheated on him.) I always thought he just needed someone to talk to so he made up an excuse to call the operator. That’s the beauty of good writing. Sometimes it is open to interpretation. I guess this is one of those times.
    Gosh, he was a great songwriter and singer! So sad that he died so young. The plane crash that took him from us happened just over a year after this song was released. RIP.

  • @joel65913
    @joel65913 Рік тому +2

    He was very versatile being able to go very introspective with songs like this, "I've Got a Name" and "Time in a Bottle" but also swing from the rafters and rock out with tunes such as "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "You Don't Mess Around with Jim". For the short time he was on earth before he and his main collaborator Maury Muehleisen perished in a small engine plane crash he was quite prolific.
    Another fine story song along the lines of this one is "Please Come to Boston" by Dave Loggins.

    Shon, you're going to get a TON of worthy Jim Croce song suggestions. But as a lifelong Jim Croce fan, trust me on this, please explore two deep-cut gems that are so beautiful you'll be amazed! 1) "The Hard Way Every Time" and 2) "Walking Back to Georgia" "The Hard Way Every Time" is probably Croce's most honest, self-reflective, confessional song and "Walking Back to Georgia" is a heartbreaking yet hopeful song about a lost love. No one else will recommend these deep-cut wonderful songs and I think you'll thank me for the recommendation. Enjoy!

    Trying to get closure, he intends to make this excruciating call to convey he's "overcome the blow" of betrayal and loss of "the love that I thought would save me".
    But, he can't even read the number he just wrote because the tears are welling up in his eyes. He realizes he can't go through with the call and, besides, "there's nobody there I really wanted to talk to." So, "let's forget about this call". Appreciating the kindness of the operator is his last grasp at something positive in this experience.

    For another artist I put in a similar category to Jim, have a listen to Gordon Lightfoot and his song "If You Could Read My Mind". He's a brilliant storyteller. "The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" is another great true story that he put to song.

    You got it, spot-on. And your shoulders! So remind me of my husband. Shon must be the name of a great-looking man.

    Shon you'd be hard pressed nowadays to find a storyteller/singer/songwriter of this caliber. They just don't make em like Jim anymore. Check out his songs "Bad , Bad Leroy Brown" & "You Don't Mess Around With Jim". Both are great upbeat cool songs i think you would love.
