      Transmission, radiator hose, battery clamp, all the bearings, some part of the frame near the wheels, and lord knows whatever else the dealership charged me. I basically bought a second fj in my repairs.

    I had a 2008 FJ, bright yellow (we called it the short bus). Owned it 6 years never had anything break on it with 60,000 miles. I lived in Seattle and I would pick up my coworkers when the weather was bad. Now I own a 2007 FJ. I bought it in 2018 and it only had 50,000 miles on it. 6-speed manual. Not even a scratch on the skid plate. It's so reliable and fun to drive. Where I live now, every day is an offroad adventure.

    For the 2010 - 2014 FJ's, the transfer case and transmission breathers were extended into the engine bay next to the battery. But they left the rear diff and e-locker breathers the same. The only troublesome part I've had on my 2012 TT is the MG/CLT relay, which I've had to replace twice. Another annoying thing is the drive shaft slip yoke. It has a tendency to stick. So when you come to a stop, when it lets go you get a feeling like you've been bumped from behind. The solution is to keep the slip yoke well greased.

    2007 FJ. 310,000KM currently. Only owned it for 2 years. Failures: Alternator - died when backing into my driveway, pretty easy replacement done by myself in the driveway for a couple hundred $. Seized brake calipers - front and rear, at different times. Sway bar bushings. Transmission 'shudder' - partial flush on the trans fluid and added 'anti-shudder' additive. Passenger side CV boot torn, replaced both inner and outer boots myself with factory Toyota boots. Replaced (what appeared to be original) shocks with Bilstein 5100's - much better ride, and added a 1" lift while at it - shocks hadn't failed, but at 300,000+KM on them, it was time.

    The Lean is normal when you lifted it you needed to add 1/4 spacer on drivers side strut tower. This takes the lean out. When ony the driver is in vehicle and the gas tank right under the driver you have more weight on that side.
    You can buy lift springs and the good ones will have 1 spring a little taller to compensate for the lean. I own a 2010 in iceburg white myself. Great rigs.

  • @DaLizMs
    @DaLizMs 3 роки тому +2

    Only thing that has worn out so far was my steering kingpin shaft thing, FJ only had 45k KM on it. I've owned it since new (2014) and that was only thing that failed, I'm at 98k KM now and nothing else has been changed other then Oils and a new set of tires 3 months ago. Bonus is I haven't lost a penny on it yet value and mechanically wise.

    The surprising one I ran in to is the wheel studs. They are super soft metal. I snapped one off hand tighting, then looked at the rest and several others were elongate. they can be replaced with modified lexus studs; but, strange to build such a great off-road machine and cheap-out on the studs.

  • @MeetJackBlack

    For "steering wheel chatter", there's a little plastic pin that keeps upper column true with lower column. The reason for the plastic pin is due to safety. In the event of a collision, this pin is sheared, and the steering column is designed to collapse in on itself. You might have inadvertently sheared it by turning the wheel without assist of power steering. I made this mistake on mine when working on the car. You can either replace the column, have yours spot welded, or live with it. 🙂

    Your steering wheel chatter is a result of the needle bearings being worn out inside the front differential where the cv axles enter the front diff. There is a replacement kit from East Coast Gear Supply which replaces them with needle bearing replacement sleeves. Be sure to get the needle bearing removal tool and sleeve install tool. Info is on ECGS website. This would also be a great time to upgrade the cx axle inner boots with heavy duty ones. Can all be done in a day in the driveway.

  • @noobasdfjkl
    @noobasdfjkl 3 роки тому +4

    Steering wheel chatter is probably caused by worn tie rods, steering shaft coupler, or the steering u-joint. Any one of these three are likely causing your issue.

    My FJ kinda has that steering clunk/clatter shit and when going over bumps it gets knocked around. Kinda like a bad tie rod but my tie rods are fine. I ordered the upper and lower intermediate steering shaft parts which should be the fix. I would look at those.

    On the 1980s F100s they all had an extra shim on the outside side of the shocks to make up for the camber of the road. Is was only 1/2 inch and bareley noticable but on the flat concrete you could just pick it.

    Hey man. Nice video! Love the FJ content. I have an 07 FJ myself with 220k miles (about 354k km). Bought it used with 140k on the clock. So far it's been ridiculously reliable for me. I maintain it meticulously and do my own fluid/ oil changes and spark plugs. I've had a few things break/go bad for me. Including: power steering pump (twice), rear diff bearings, brakes (twice), wheel bearing, serpentine belt, windshield (three times 😬), aaaand my transfer case needed replacing. Honestly a pretty low maintenance rig given the maintenance. The transfer case replacement was unexpected, but I guess it got contaminated somehow? Hopefully the engine and transmission last a while with good maintenance. Trying to get this beast to 300k miles. And yeah, I'd love to see an in depth vid on the diff breathers. I've had my 07 FJ for about 30K mi over the last 3 years. I've done the batter, breaks(all 4 caliper, rotor, pads), steering universal joint (stupid rust), tires and oil changes. The dealer had just replaced the rear axle gear set and locker. The cars reliability is just boring. I took it on a 600 mile trip with 150 miles of off roading and it never complained even a little. Although I was very over loaded and probably will need a set of wheel bearings a bit early in the back. But that's totally my fault.

Since then, the only thing that's "broken" is the headlamps and one of my battery fuses rusted and needed replacing. I did my brakes once in 2021. That's about it. Not a single rattle or squeak. I think my FJ is a starfish and repairs himself so as not to inconvenience me. 🥰 But also I regularly do full checks at the mechanic and tell them to fix anything they find broken. They get so excited but then never find anything. 😅 Happy travels!

    they have lean cause the fuel tank battery steering and brakes components are all on the drivers side. fj even has left and right specific springs but that apparently isn’t enough. my 4th gen 4runner which is identical to the fj had lean. fixed it with coilovers and small rear spacer

    How do you change it without breaking the mirror?

    • @stokedtour
      @stokedtour  3 роки тому +1

      Ahh you actually have to pull the mirror out of the casing first, and then you can access the light from behind. You can do this with prying tools - the mirror is "clipped into place" so it should just pop off with the right angle - good luck!

    Have a question, I have a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser two wheel drive automatic and the ABS and the differential light came on when driving on freeway and won't turn off back wheel skids when I turn under 10 miles, I changed the ABS speed sensors and the wire for the speed sensors on the back nothing ABS lights are still on I did run into some heavy mud-puddles when it was raining. Any ideas?😢

    hey dude cool video I've had my fj for about 8 years in September can't complain the only one time it died on me was in my own garage it was the battery but after 5 years but that was my fault for taking to long to change it but from there no problem
    the only things that I've changes is the oil ,the time belt ,brakes, oh the back door wouldn't open but besides that can't complain it's been pretty good to me I'm a us citizen that lives in Mexico so I come back and forth every day for work 😊

    Got my 07 with 200,000 kms on it. Ive now got it up to 345 xxx. Mechanics were shocked when they saw how good of condition it is in. Only downside ,, frame rust -_-. Had to replace my exhaust, both front and rear brakes, ac compressor and lifted the front 2.5 inch attached a 3/4 inch disc on top of the driver side puck and it leveled that driver side dip.

    • @stokedtour

      As a 50 year mechanic I would wager it's simply a universal joint! Sometimes they can be hard to diagnose if you can't easily get to them to apply torque left, and right to see "slack/movement" there should be none!

  • @thomasmullins1783
    @thomasmullins1783 3 роки тому +1

    The early autos have torque converter problems if you don't 1) follow transmission maintenance and 2) add a transmission cooler. For some reason Toyota didn't add an aux cooler and it allows the trans to overheat

    I've got a 3rd gen 4runner, but I love Toyotas; therefore, I subscribed! I just got some rebuilding the entire front-end! Newer version SPC UCA's, and Dobinsons IMS shocks and their tallest springs, because I plan to upgrade all the bumpers and ad new sliders. I replaced the lower ball joints 1st, then the LCA's bushings with Whiteline. I also replaced the steering rack, and sway bar bushing with Energy Suspension. After this I plan on rebuilding the rear-end suspension, but need some time... 2 days of non-stop work at it feels as if all 7 dwarves beat the shit out of me with clubs for hours! The LCA's bushings and fitting the washers really kicked my ass! It looks funny to as the front-end is up like a bro-dozer. Lol It will level out nicely when the rear lift is done. Thank you for your content and great sense of humor! Go anywhere! 🛣🏞🗻🏕🏖🏜🌄🌌

    Summary of the video, when not modding or lifting the FJ, typically the main issues that could go wrong is brake calipers seizing and transmission shake (usually fixed with a fluid drain and refill). Napa has a lifetime warranty on their calipers, just make sure you hang onto the receipt. For the transmission it is better to drain and refill bit more frequently so you possibly won’t run into the issue.

    I'm having a horrible, almost metal on metal rubbing sound at the rear of my 07 FJ. I think it's the body mount on the side of the frame by the rear bumper. Everything else seems to be in good shape, and yes, I hate the body lean to the driver side. People always ask me if I was in an accident.
