This is my second FJ. I had a auto transmission first and now I have a 6MT. I didn’t think I could love an FJ more till I got this one. So much fun to drive. I look forward to any time I have to get into it. Even driving on regular roads is fun, and when I get down to the pine barrens and bomb around those trails with the sugar sand it’s a blast. I’ve owned Audis, v6 Mitsubishis and Alfa Romeos and this is still the most fun car I’ve ever owned. And I set the back up with a comfy bed for over landing so I take it to the drive in and stay all weekend long. There is NOTHING like an FJ!

Stock to 285 tire size, with supercharger and red trd suspension, the awd makes it even more fun around town uo can throw it aroind and its more sticky and the supercharger makes this thing an insane.
I had a awd bmw 3 series that was 60/40 power diff and turbocharged and the fj us just as fun. The fj as it in its class is more nimble and performance as a daily driver

The MT FJ is amazing. We’ve had ours for over five years and love it. The FJ sounds incredible joining the highway and even in NYC the MT is not a problem. Actually makes for a great city car. I always walk away with a smile after driving the FJ.

I own a 2013 Manual AND a 2007 automatic FJ. I LOVE my manual, as it feels more agile, responsive, and I hardly ever have to use the brakes to slow my FJ - especially helpful here in the mountains of Colorado. And at this point, a stick shift is basically an anti-theft device, since an ever-dwindling number of people know how to drive a stick😂

The biggest difference between the AT and the 6MT FJ is that I wouldn’t have bought an FJ without the 6MT (unless I was doing a fully electric conversion). When I accidentally found mine, the dealer was like “you know this a manual?” I was, “I’m here BECAUSE it’s a manual.”
Did have to do the throw out bearing; but I went URD hydraulic; which should be the only choice. Mine drives like a slow Supra; but not that slow. Only downside is the gas mileage; but love always requires sacrifice.

If I found a FJ in the 100-150k mile range I would have bought auto. But I bought a 200k+ mile fj and I like to think the manual is alot more reliable than the automatic. Given if you take care of the auto Im sure it’ll live a long life. But now you’re hoping the previous owner took good care. I think if you neglect both transmissions, the auto will die first. I’m creeping on 250k miles in my 6MT with no problems and a joy to drive 👍

Strange. I don't research them much but I literally beat the living crap out of mine like it owes me something. 4 high, 4 low, diff locked, atrac on, doesn't matter I'll row all 6 gears and catch air, drag logs, push vehicles, drift at 60mph in the mud or ice, pull limos out of an intersection, pull rv's up a dirt road. All on the original clutch at 140k. I drive her hard and replaced the tires and brakes so far more often than the clutch. The wife's is at 180k with original clutch and I drive her har too just not as hard as mine I actually had a 3500 lb dump trailer I was towing and didn't know I had 3500lb + in it and hammered down to hit the freeway, it lifted the front tires and barked them in second and third while merging. She didn't skip a beat. Not just an fj fan but a toyota fan. My 82 mountain goat will start any time of the year in high triple digits or 6 foot of snow with old fuel. What machines.

It's not an "obsession" with manual transmissions, it's a logical performance and investment preference. Manuals are mechanically more reliable and less expensive to repair, they're more fuel efficient and usually have more gears than the automatic offered in the same vehicle, plus having a clutch provides control of power which an auto cannot, using them correctly saves on brakes, and they're exciting to drive. Automatics are mechanically more complicated and more likely to need service, they cause more wear and tear on the braking system, they are exceptionally more expensive to service or rebuild/replace, the fact they're always engaged is a disadvantage in many situations, esp. slippery ones, and they're boring to drive. The ONLY thing an auto does better than a manual is the speed at which it can shift, and that's a measure of only tenths of a second, which matters only on a track/race.

  • @Kana0211
    @Kana0211 Рік тому

Whatever the previous owners of mine did, it now grinds 3 and 5 really bad plus a clutch louder than a banshee and like 3 inches of drivetrain backlash. I never felt these on my test drive cuz I was a new manual driver at the time and only drove around a neighborhood. Oof

So now I have two 2014 FJs with automatic and the crawl control which we still love. I love my 08 manual FJ. The AWD is the best part. Winter driving is where it shines. I never have to constantly be shifting in and out of 4WD like in my old Tacoma. However my only complaint is with the placement of the cup holders. When shifting into 6th gear the drink in the forward cup holder will be in your way. A bit of an oversite by the designers in my opinion. Great job on the video.

Still have a few days before I pick mine up, but a couple of thoughts. First, while there is a learning curve to driving a manual, it isn't particularly challenging. Also, once you are accustomed to it, shifting is an automatic process, you only notice it learning the clutch in a new vehicle or after a clutch replacement. Second, replacing a manual transmission clutch is a fraction of the price compared to any work an automatic transmission might need. People are all different, but for me, without a manual transmission, I never feel like I'm actually controlling the machine. Finally, my friends in the insurance industry say that a manual transmission vehicle is a bigger theft deterrence system than anything else today.
Once again, thanks for the channel, without it I never would have know the manual transmission FJs existed. I'm not sure where you are, but if we can arrange a time you'd be welcome to have a go with mine.

Pretty sure most vehicles clean up better from out west but that color wouldn't have been on my short, probably anecdotal, I have a 2011 army green one that's awesome except for maybe the worst front hood lip I've ever seen it looks like it's been detailed with a blowtorch the last few years it just pitted away to metal pretty sure it's a defect some years have had or something specific im unaware of

If I was doing a lot of rock crawling and didn’t have to contend with Seattle hill starts, the MT would be my preference. That said, I love my FJ and very glad I found a 2012 in such great condition.

Feels weird replying to a 1 y/o video but in the market for MT FJ. Found a 2012 TT (red) with 122k miles for $24900. Is that too high or a good deal considering? 2 owner with one minor accident reported and no damage reported. Texas vehicle for all of its life and got photos of the undercarriage with no rust. Not even surface rust. I hate to buy without seeing in person but haven’t found one near me 2010+ in many months less than $30k.

That definitely makes the Mt better with throttle tip in with the clutch feel . Also a tune really helps in that department as well next fj that's the first thing im doing bolt ons just kill the torque low off throttle especially noticed on auto trans at 50mph cruising speed, where a tune again modded shift points as well.
If you get maf calibrator that's a must top as intake exhaust mods throw off the fuel mapping the 4.0 can deviate quite a bit as it is with how it reacts to it.
I'm letting the market cool a bit and selling my FJ and importing a uzj100 V8 with manual transmission to drive daily but next time it's fj manual transmission, mild lift (really love the stock trd red suspension) with pizza cutters and supercharger or just a tune. Its just as fun as a sports car I actually like the grip and with the extra power you can get that 60/40 to understeer if you're not too top-heavy lol that's why I love the stock semi Baja soft raked suspension setup, even something more adjustable might make it more fun in that regard.

Great video as usual! I have a 13 6MT and absolutely love it! It definitely is quirky as hell and can be a little of a handful to off-road, but I feel more engaged at all times with the drivetrain. First gear is the shortest of any vehicle I’ve ever driven, but then again lends itself to being very useful for crawling. You have to take what you know about driving a manual on the street and throw it out the window when wheeling though, for instance I’ve found that I have to constantly have my hand on the shifter in certain situations. One time while climbing the Test hill on some sand dunes, while screaming up the hill, the shaking of the vehicle while driving up caused the shifter to slip out of gear into neutral, which is NOT ideal on a climb! When I lost engagement, I had to slam on the brakes to keep from rolling backward. That situation can be super dangerous as you can imagine. Wheeling an automatic is easier by far, but the challenging of wheeling a manual is super rewarding.

I have driven other stick shift Toyotas like a 2015 6MT Tacoma and a 1973 FJ40 with a 3 speed floorshift. But since my Junior year of highschool, I have been honored to daily drive and personally maintain a 2010 6MT FJ Cruiser. My parents trust me quite a lot to drive such an awesome vehicle. I absolutely love this car so much, very fun to drive, and you feel to be at one with the car when driving offroad, constantly switching through gears. I haven't ever driven a 5AT FJ, but I can say the 6MT has a surprising amount of get up and go considering the vehicle. And this rig seems to have torque for days, you have to actually try to stall this car. A buddy of mine I was driving home suggested I don't give it any gas and just drop the clutch in 1st gear at a standstill on the acending portion of a bridge, and it wasn't even close to stalling. Both of us were quite impressed. The only thing I'd "complain" about is the full time 4wd, sometimes I would like to be able to really kick out the rear end on some loose sand and gravel ;), but locking the transfercase allows for some fun powerslides. The full time 4wd definitely helps in the rain and snow where a locked transfercase would be less than ideal. And everysince we have owned it, there seems to be a chirping bearing that goes away when the clutch pedal is depressed, textbook throwout bearing on the way out that I should get around to sooner than later. The only thing is the fuel economy, she's very thirsty. I believe there might be something causing my issue, but I average around 11.5mpg. And what's even more odd is it gets better mileage the harder I drive it, with it becoming worse with more conservative driving. Quite odd, if any one has any ideas, please holler them at me, I've done quite a bit of poking around on the car, and I am starting to suspect alignment might be the culprit. Even with that being said, absolutely love the car.

As the video showed, I love talking about my 6MT FJ. Same throwout bearing issue on my '08. My MPG isn't as awful but also below 14 if I drive conservatively. I think it may be time for what used to be a "tuneup". Spark plugs, air filter and all that jazz. Do you have a lift or tires on yours? Mine is very very stock with 160k miles for the sake of comparison

What the California tests miss is that the FJ is a great winter vehicle. The fact that it is AWD is key to winter driving. In addition to my FJ, I had a Tacoma that was a 4X4 and in winter you either had it in 2WD and it had no traction or you locked the center diff and it hopped around corners like a rabbit. It was a real problem in parking lots where you couldn't make a sharp turn. If you live where you get snow then the manual FJ is the only way to go. I had a nephew that rolled his 4X4 and I said what about 4 wheel drive and he said "We were on the highway so we had to be in 2WD so when we hit ice it went sideways".

Yeah my FJ auto gets squirrelly on wet pavement with my bfg ats and not in a controllable oversteer type of way. I prefer throwing it into a corner with confidence. Importing a V8 manual 100 soon hopefully I can find an FJ down the road in Mt that's clean. I just can't pay those kind of numbers and in a couple years early 2000 vehicles from Toyota and a number of companies with more generational updates makes for some manual transmission fun with a few technical and safety caveats but closer a few years back and those wet corners without traction and stability control and anti lock brakes and it's making the bad ass safety cave FJ an easy decision.

And finding what I wanted was a long search (wanting a manual in iceberg white, all the trd goodies, 13 or 14 model year low miles and the rear locker/atrac) and finally got lucky back in 16 and I have enjoyed it every moment since! good to know the gear ratio differences. I always wondered why my tire size upgrade didn't affect me as much as most reports but that makes perfect sense why. Now i just to get new gears with a front locker, do my final jump to 35s and let's see if I can beat the Rubicon crawl ratio!

I started driving my first 6MT in 2007, which was unfortunately totally destroyed by a idiot who ran through the red light & T bone my FJ. It was so strong that it sacrifced to save my life, allowed me to walk away without any injury. I then immediately ordered my second 6MT & got it in 2014. I recently drove it all the way up north to the Arctic Ocean via the famous Demspter Highway in July 2024. The truck just ran through all the tortures without any issue.

Mine is 2008 manual. It’s really not difficult to drive on stop and go traffic since 1st gear is so short it will creep forward in idle very slowly.
Something that’s worth mentioning it’s that there was a design flaw in the casting where the throw-out bearing rides and it would lead to premature failures. Even though mi clutch plate and disc where fine the bearing would start squeaking and that happen to mine. A steel sleeve solve this problem but once you are there might as well replace the clutch since you have to drop the transmission anyway.
This failure happened at around 120k miles. If you look for throw-out bearing squeak Fj Cruiser a bunch of results will appear.
