I've been using Spotify for a while and one of the reasons I found their service so good is because of how easy you can find new songs and artists. It makes me happy to find a new artist that isn't famous but makes great music. Unfortunately now I know that these artists aren't being paid fairly by Spotify :(. Personally, the biggest selling point with Spotify compared to other streaming brands, specifically Apple music, is the fact that you can connect to it on pretty much any technological device you have. For example, the Spotify and Playstation partnership has added way more subscribers to spotify as you can now play your favourite music while gaming
I like Spotify (I even pay for premium on&off), but their main issue as a company is that they're actually not profitable enough... because of how much they pay out in royalties.
Apple Music isn't profitable either. They just use the rest of their business to subsidize their music service. Not exactly fair competition (this applies to Amazon and Google as well of course) but that's how it is. Spotify may not be profitable, but investors believe in it, hence why it is still very much alive. Very glad it is as well, someone challenging the giants is good for the consumer in the long run.

@samruddha tupe perfectly said, true true. also, soundcloud in a mobile broswer like firefox allows adfree, screen off, music listening, nonstop, all day. And often many popular songs are hard but available to save or bookmark, including hour long playlist compilations... beats spotify there big time, no install required at all
a lot of famous artists now started on soundcloud namely billie eilish, marshmello, post malone, kehlani. it's a good place to start for artists. soundcloud is very different also. it's more like a social media for artists since artists can repost songs comment on songs reply on comments. it helps other artists to go viral like marshmello when he got reposted by skrillex.
Spotify has hands down changed how I listen to music. In the last six years, the only music I bought was Tool because they were still not online. I have tried EVERY music app that has ever existed since 2002. The only one that I use and pay for is Spotify. They have the best UI; the best recommendations; the best social connectivity; they even tell me when my favorite artist release new music and tour. The ONLY thing missing is a hi-resolution audio option for audiophiles to feel good about ourselves and our gear.
Spotify's release radar, discover weekly, and daily mixes are what makes Spotify stand out from its competitors. Not to mention the equalizer controls, user stats, and fun third-party websites that you can use with Spotify that just make it a better experience than any other audio streaming app out there.
So you are tellling me that before they overcharged music customers for CDs 200% and nobody cared but now the tables have turned and they and they throw a tantrum? Idk I feel the democratization of music is a good thing. In my opinion the blame is in part on the big record studios which also take a big cut (it's an oligopoly Warner, universal and sony)
The major labels have always been greedy and taken more than their fair share. Now is no exception. They've struck deals with Spotify to stay afloat, and more money goes from Spotify to the suits at the major labels than to the artists they claim to work for, the ones who's product they're selling. You are right that 20 bucks for a CD is outrageous, and it always has been outrageous. People did care that CDs were overpriced, that's why piracy blew up. If people had remained happy with the price of music, I don't think they would have resorted to searching for low quality mp3 rips online. Then perhaps the advent of streaming wouldn't have been as quick and detrimental to artist. I also think that 20 dollar price stems from the fact that before digital, CDs were considered to be higher quality than vinyl, and vinyl records were around 10 bucks for a new album, maybe 12. It wasn't until iTunes and Napster really made everyone realize that CDs are just the plastic on which the digital music files were stored that CDs were eventually deemed to be worth less than records. Nowadays new vinyl records are around 20 bucks and new CDs are closer to 10, same price as new digital albums on iTunes and Amazon.

I personally prefer UA-cam Music because it literally has everything you can listen to on UA-cam, including unofficial remixes and covers. The app is laggy though
I was always buying, listening and making playlists on iTunes. Thousands of them. Several years ago my son told me about Spotify. So I downloaded the app and started listening via the free service. Kinda changed pop culture not just the gaming industry if I'm being honest. Lots of movies and shows are heavily derivative of Valve's games and their stories.
Valve isn't like Microsoft or Sony with gaming platforms, or Netflix or Spotify. They do whatever they want. They're almost frustratingly mysterious sometimes. They stopped making big games after 2013 or so. Why? Who knows. They do what they want. They're almost always silent. No adverstisements either. It's really weird. Even some of their games have an ominous and such a compelling feel, you see games like Portal 2 and Half Life 2 and it can only be a Valve game.
The only thing I can think of to compare Valve to is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, very weird company. Quite fascinating. I'm not even a gamer.

It makes me happy to find a new artist that isn't famous but makes great music. Unfortunately now I know that these artists aren't being paid fairly by Spotify :(. I hope that will change in the near future, there's nothing more rewarding that knowing that the money from my subscription is going to support small talented artists

Without big record studios you won't even meet the half of the music you have. And of course they won't sound the same neither.
