    The earliest film kiss held by the BFI National Archive is this stolen smooch aboard a steam train, intended as a comic filler sequence to play as part of the ‘phantom ride’ films popular in Victorian cinema. G. A. Smith's 1899 film shows a train going into a dark tunnel, revealing a couple in a railway carriage taking the opportunity to steal a kiss. As the train apparently emerges into the light the couple move apart in a guilty fashion, and although scarcely enough to make your Victorian grandmother blush, it gives the scene its slight frisson of naughtiness. But Smith's Kiss in the Tunnel is also one of the world's most important early films because it is one of the first to edit together several related shots. Exhibitors were recommended that it be shown, to add humour, between a phantom ride of a train going into, then coming out of, a tunnel.

      Well, the first film with a kiss in it is simply called "The Kiss" from 1896, and Thomas Edison was behind it.

      @@TheUnforgiven59 Yeah, but this is the more refined "cover" version, Kinda like where Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light" is cool, But "Manfred Mann's Earth Band" improved the thing.

      Trax-3 I'll have to look into it. I would never have guessed that an industry standard 35mm would have already existed in 1899. But I'm speaking out of ignorance with this, so I'll just stop and check

      For some reason, footage from this era is usually shown digitaly at a 480p resolution which significantly reduces the detail. Even a 9.5mm print can be effectively scanned in 1080p

    Of course it is clear. All the information is there in a 35 mm print (16 mm came much later). The image is uncompressed, a resolution equivalent of probably 6K. 35 was used from the beginning, it became standard around 1905. Bad resolution on UA-cam is usually because of the up-loader. A bad VHS-print in 480p is still a bad VHS print. You can't improve the image by using a higher resolution, the information is gone forever. You can rely on BFI to use the best methods.

      Not to discredit BFI, but you said it yourself...the quality of the uncompressed source on the bigger format is the key here, not the processing. Sometimes I wonder if the digitalisation of things (which look great now) will look artificial in the future and we wished we hadn't compressed things so much.

    This is such a beautiful video. Right at the beginning of the film industry, set in the Victorian Era and showcasing the most powerful and beautiful gift we have - Love. No war, hate or violence like today's films. Just a beautiful example of the love between a man and a woman. That's what we all need - Love. It's the only thing that will move us forward as a species and civilization and the only thing that will save us.

    There was no audio back then. Titanic videos from 1912 are no where near this quality and have no sound. What they suddenly decide to stop producing videos with sound?? Fake

    • @Red_____
      @Red_____ 3 роки тому +3

      the sound is probably a later addition, and the video quality looks good because - well - this is a good copy and those you watched simply were not

    • @debranchelowtone
      @debranchelowtone 2 роки тому +1

      Obviously this audio was added recently. There was no audio on the orignal film, but since the begining of cinema silent films were not silent. When the projections were made there were musicians very often. Most of the time a single pianist or organist, or full orchestras in bigger venues. Before title card was invented there was someone who read some text out loud to the audience. In the later years machines were used for sound effects, and also pre recorded effects on disc were used. So those silents movies were never made to be played without music, hence this modern interpretation suits well the art of that time. Maybe the locomotive noise is a bit too much, but the music is just fine.
