    I recently bought a 99 Camry at an impound auction, it came with no keys but the tow driver opened it. This will be very helpful, kind of feels like I'm stealing my own car LOL.

    Just a suggestion before you start spending money and replacing parts, it's possible you may just have a worn out key. If you have a spare key try that first. I had this exact problem where my ignition cylindar wouldn't move, i was getting ready to order a new ignition cylinder when i ran across a spare key that came with my car when i bought it and had never used. It was obvious from comparing the 2 keys the one i used on a daily basis was significantly worn. Anyway when i tried the spare key it unlocked just like that.

  • @sjsmith801

    That is not the ignition switch. It is the key lock cylinder. The ignition switch is behind the lock cylinder. It's important to be accurate when ordering parts etc.

    One of the best repair videos I've seen out of hundreds! Clear, concise, clear video and lighting. My ignition is in a similar condition; were it not for teflon lubricant I would not be able to get it past the ON position. Thanks to you I'm confident I can do this myself. A local lock shop wanted about $500!
    A couple of questions please: Is it absolutely necessary to disconnect the battery? I would prefer to avoid having to reset the emissions by going through all the drive cycles.
    Secondly, did you get the lock re-keyed so that your door key fits or do you now have 2 separate keys?

    • @craig84074
      @craig84074  4 роки тому

      I'm not an auto technician, but I think disconnecting the battery is just a safe thing to do, but for this repair probably not necessary. Maybe someone else can comment on that. As far as keying my door properly, I just unlock the door with my keyfob. So, to answer your question I did not, as I am fine with an ignition key and then just use my keyfob to unlock the door.

    Thank you so much. Bought a new part and had trouble getting the bezel off. Changed it all out. Now I’m having trouble getting the bezel back on. The one on the bottom right corner won’t snap it. Got a set of pliers and pushed the metal piece which actually snaps into the hole to push in a little but still having trouble getting it forced in. I even tried with my rubber mallet. Any ideas? Do I just have to push that metal piece in just a little more before trying to replace the bezel? I also had a moment where the new key wouldn’t go all the way back to the left so I was having trouble getting the key out. It’s my bad luck but at least the new part is I’m so thank you so much. Can’t believe how easy this stuff can be and the mechanic will charge you and arm and a leg? And I’m very fond of my appendages. Lmfao.

    • @craig84074
      @craig84074  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not an auto technician, but I'm wondering if maybe the metal clip moved a little on you and it is not lined up properly to accept the stab on the back of the bezel. Sometimes the key will hang up a bit and you may need to just turn the steering wheel to the right and left to kind of free the key up. Not sure if any of this will help, but good luck.

    This lock cylinder is exactly like the original. However, the item description does not tell you what else is required to install this, nor does the item come with instructions. The part comes with keys that must be used as a template so you can have keys made with the resistor in them. You must take a resistance reading of the your old key and cross-reference that value with the GM key resistance chart. That will tell you which key can be used. Then you must use the provided template keys to have keys made of that resistance value. At most locksmiths, getting two keys made will cost roughly $100. If you use the wrong key or a key without a resistor, the car will not start.

      Do you know if your car was equipped with anti theft system and at one point had a transponder key? The reason I ask is because our Camry did originally have a transponder key and now we have a copy that no longer turns the ignition when it did work for years. I am just wondering if getting a new ignition lock cylinder will fix the problem. Or would I have to buy an ignition lock cylinder and then get a transponder key programmed...

  • @msh104utube

    So, I did this and now my car will attempt to start, but it doesn't catch (i.e. it just keeps cranking). Is this because I didn't get the ignition lock with the transponder or is some anti-theft feature kicking in? It's a 2000 Camry XLE, so I surmise it's got some transponder or anti-theft feature preventing the car from starting. Thanks.

    • @craig84074
      @craig84074  3 роки тому

      Michael, I am not an auto tech, but I too have a transponder for the front door lock/unlock, on my 2000 Camry and I did not experience this problem. Typically anti-theft devices are devices connected into the wiring that will prevent the engine from getting any power, which means your starter would not even be engaging. If your engine is cranking, but not starting I tend to believe it is a mechanical issue. On a vehicle 20 years old I would first check to make sure fuel is making it up to the engine....if not, it would be reasonable the fuel pump died on you.

      @@craig84074 I appreciate the info. The car was driving fine all week, and right up to the moment I changed the ignition cylinder (I had to start the car with my original key, and drive it up to my garage to start the replacement process), so because the timing is so particular, I think it may be due to the ignition cylinder. Also, this ignition cylinder I ordered is a bit different from the original (even though it states it is for my year); there is a extra metal protrusion around the key hole that prevents the wiring and harness that went around the original to fit back in, so I had to leave that dangling inside the plastic covering. That's something I have to look into, and may be the cause. Thanks for the info btw; everything went so smoothly thanks to your video up until this point.

      @@craig84074 No worries! I replaced the new one with the old ignition cylinder, and put on the harness exactly as it was before, and the car started with out issue. I'm pretty sure now that harness has a transponder chip that communicates with the transponder in the key. This is why when a new cylinder is installed that does not have a the transponder set to the new key, the car will just crank and crank, but not start. I'll trying to fix this issue, so I can sell this car, for a 2018 Prius Prime so that's my motivation for doing this. Thanks, Craig!

    So I have a problem with my push to start in my 2011 Camry it’s a SE and I think it may be a problem with the headers I’m guessing that’s not recognizing my key and sometimes takes me many minutes to maybe start it by pushing and holding the push start button down with the fob against it for about 30 seconds and it will make a small beep sound then I’m now to
    Push the button and the car starts eventually I’ve taken it to the dealership and they told me that I have to replace the push start ignition switch and they gave me the push to start button and I didn’t want to let Toyota dealership install a single a button and small time and get charged a lot for it :( can anybody give me a recommendation of what to do or if maybe a mechanic may be to install it for a better price? Please thank you
