watching this made me realize that i'd actually like paranormal romance to come back a bit more, but with the current gender sensibilities. Like you mentioned with the first one, paranormal had a lotta controlling/alpha man stuff that tbh steered me away from adult romance as a whole. I think it'd be fun if trad publishing split the difference between current fantasy and contemporary romance and had a more updated paranormal trend

I'm 57 and trust me there were soft heroes. I've never been a huge fan of the Goods Read List and you have now confirmed that I was absolutely correct! 😀.
New video idea; Your over 40 year old subscribers picks the romance books that got them to fall in love with romance novels. The genre from the 80s was WAY more gentle and full of depth of characters that somehow got lost in the intervening years.

Just in case anyone was curious, like I was!!!
I found a list of the 2009 Goodreads Choice Awards winners that directed me to the old 2009 Goodreads Nominees polls' page.
That page appears to have been taken down, or something, by now-but I put that link into the Wayback Machine and found an archived copy of the 2009 Goodreads Choice Awards nominees poll(s) pages!
So... THESE were the 2009 Romance nominees:
    " Poll
The 2009 Goodreads Choice Awards: ROMANCE
An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon 465 votes 24.3%
Vision in White by Nora Roberts 189 votes 9.9%
Destined for an Early Grave by Jeaniene Frost 189 votes 9.9%
What I Did for Love by Susan Elizabeth Phillips 163 votes 8.5%
Black Hills by Nora Roberts 158 votes 8.3%
Kiss of a Demon King by Kresley Cole 157 votes 8.2%
What Happens in London by Julia Quinn 148 votes 7.7%
Dream Warrior by Sherrilyn Kenyon 134 votes 7.0%
Smooth Talking Stranger by Lisa Kleypas 99 votes 5.2%
Silent On The Moor by Deanna Raybourn 86 votes 4.5%
First Comes Marriage by Mary Balogh 72 votes 3.8%
Dark of Night by Suzanne Brockmann 52 votes 2.7% "
I did the same for the 2010 Goodreads Choice Awards too, but I only found a list of book covers/thumbnails for all the nominees and not the actual poll results, so I don't know how many votes each nominee received before the winner was decided.
The 2010 Goodreads Romance nominees follow below:
Savor the Moment by Nora Roberts
The Darkest Passion by Gena Showalter
    The Search by Nora Roberts
    Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione
    Lover Mine by J.R. Ward
    Naked Edge by Pamela Clare
The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook
    Promises by Marie Sexton
First Drop of Crimson by Jeaniene Frost
Love in the Afternoon by Lisa Kleypas
Ecstasy in Darkness by Gena Showalter
Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole
Cowgirls Don't Cry by Lorelai James
Play of Passion by Nalini Singh
    Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks

Susan Elizabeth Phillips romances are the reason I got hooked on the genre. A friend of mine recommended Nobody's Baby but Mine to me and I was like, "There is sex in books?!"👀Ahh, little naive me. In hindsight, this book is VERY problematic, but I devoured it back then.

I've read something like 14 of Susan Elizabeth Phillips' books. (She is known in shorthand as SEP.) I had no idea she was considered the originator of the sports romance, but I've read many of her books in her "Chicago Stars" series, which focuses on various people - coach, owners, players, managers, agents - involved with a fictional American football team. The first book is "It Had To Be You" and concerns a woman who inherits an NFL team from the father with whom she had a rocky relationship. The series is pretty good. (I think I've read about eight of them.) SEP has also written at least a couple of books featuring golfers. "Lady Be Good" is the one I remember from those.
In terms of books not involving sports, I really liked "Ain't She Sweet" about a young woman who used to be a horrible, mean girl in high school, has changed her ways, and as an adult, has to face the people she tormented. SEP has also written books involving celebrities, including "Glitter Baby" and "Breathing Room". I honestly can't say I've hated any of her books but they're not all stellar. She's just one of those trailblazers of romance that most romance readers might have or should've read. They did an interview with the author on Fated Mates. It was a fun listen: fatedmates.net/episodes/2021/7/6/s0346-susan-elizabeth-phillips

The first Romance series I encountered back in like 2011 was the "Midnight Breed" series by Lara Adrian and I love it dearly (much like you described your attachment to the Black Dagger's)
It's a paranormal romance about vampires as well. The series is structured the same as the Black Dagger book in that every book follows one warrior of "the order" finding their mate as well as a plot that arches over the whole series with several showdowns, new problems and a pretty big time-skip in the middle (and then being about the next generation). I found the world building really good, since it isn't too much to digest (in Black Dagger's I got lost at some point unfortunately). The vampires are all male and born vampires only with women who are compatible, I think they are called Breed Mates? Anyways, they have all the same birthmark which make them recognizable as such. The men drink human blood from random humans and once they find their mates, they feed each other (which makes the women immortal). They are big, strong, traumatized, full of flaws and burn in daylight or die if they are injured really badly. They also can get addicted to blood and become "Rogues" (there is no coming back from that unfortunately). I have the feeling, that all the character's are very well written, even the side characters when they first appear on (since many of them become main characters at some point) and the romances are all unique - from enemies to lovers over protector to lovers to "ups I drank your blood without knowing that you where compatible and now we are doomed to be together". I have my favorites among the warriors, but the overarching plot was so compelling that it never got boring for me. So, if you are persistent enough to read the Black Dagger Brotherhood and liked it, Midnight Breed will entertain you just as well. I highly recommend it aaaaand as far as I know the series is completed :D
Also, the smut is immaculate *.* I had a crush on at least 10 of these warriors because I wanted to be treated like they treat their women who are also all really bad-ass themselves.

I'm just getting back into reading romance and the last time I was into it was around 2011! Susan Elizabeth Phillips is one of my favourite authors but I enjoyed her books before Call Me Irresistible so much more. Ted is actually the son of a super popular couple in the series and you see him grow up in the series. Match Me If You Can and This Heart of Mine are two of the best but there's so many older books of hers that I want to find the 2023 versions of in writing quality and story execution. I hope you read more and think she's up your alley. I was disappointed by the lack of enthusiasm in the Goodreads comments.

Lemonade is fantastic! I have them for renters and pet insurance, and while I thankfully haven't had to submit any renters insurance claims, I've submitted a ton of pet claims 😅It's super simple to submit a claim, and I've never had any trouble getting reimbursed - I've gotten back thousands of dollars, over the last year (puppies needed a neurology consult, MRI, spinal tap, x-rays, emergency treatment for anaphylaxis, removal of an ingested bandaid, emergency treatment for seizures, etc.... it's been an interesting year, but they're happy and doing well 😅). Definitely recommend Lemonade.

Yesss! After watching ALL the videos about the GR awards last year, I decided to go through all the previous nominees going back to 2011, and the changes were wild. I've been on Goodreads since then, but I was only tracking my books and I wasn't actually paying attention to any of that for quite a few years. It definitely crossed my mind to check out some of these, but I do not have the headspace for it right now, lol.
The top things I noticed were: the obvious cover style changes, some of the different categories (there used to be categories for paranormal fantasy, and goodreads author, and YA/MG were separate), the fact that Brandon Sanderson has never won, and the realization that Colleen Hoover is inescapable.

I can't believe it's been more than 10 years since I was disappointed by Regin's story. The fates really conspired to make you read that book out of everything else in the series 😭 I do love Kresley Cole though. Her whole style is "Johanna Lindsey, but make it camp" and I like both of those things so the IAD series is a party for me 🥳
I hope you do end up proceeding with the Psy/Changeling series, Nalini Singh along with Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs are my ride-or-die/autobuy faves. Some books are better than others, but you can always rely on them to deliver good quality.

I started reading romance back in the mid to late 80s. So much has changed since then - especially contemporary. Lots of romantic suspense back in the day from authors like Linda Howard, Sandra Brown, Karen Robards, Nora Roberts, Tami Hoag, and Elizabeth Lowell among many others. Heroes were almost all alphas, but these ladies I mentioned began to show women as more capable. Most books similar to the ones we read now like dark or steamy were considered erotica back then, and the quality was not always the best. Historical "bodice rippers" ruled the shelves.

I have Susan Elizabeth Phillips on my tbr-i know she has a Chicago football series that was really popular. not sure if it was the first by her that kickstarted sports romance or another of her series but I do remember hearing on a podcast that once upon a time, sports heroes were kind of a no-no, that authors were encouraged to not write them but then she did and it was great! I think id like to see paranormal make a comeback, think it became way too saturated but with the amazing authors now id like to see their spins on it. and would definitely like more actual chick-lit romcoms that lean into the awkwardness that you're able to get away with in romcoms and that deliver on conflict and character wounds but never forget that they are in fact a romantic comedy and are funny!

Last year when I saw people going nuts over Things We Never Got Over, I was like, these people must have never read a Susan Elizabeth Phillips book before. Because TWNGO is lame mashup of Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Kristen Ashley books.
A lot of newer authors are repurposing works of these awesome older authors. But because these newer, younger readers stick to reading what's currently popular, they miss out on these on awesome OG books.

I liked the Psy-changeling series when I read it many years ago, but I got bored with it. But then during covid I was dying of boredom and I went on a binge reread of old series that I dropped. And I got obssesed with the Psy-changeling series. Like I reread books multiple times obssesed hahah I am pretty sure I reread Heart of Obsidian at least 6 times, BUT I HATE Kiss of Snow with PASSION. For sooo many people that couple is their favorite couple of the series while I can't stand it and i pretend it doesn't exist. Like sure I am not the biggest fan of age gaps in general, but I wish so much the main girl was at least 3 years older. And I just didn't like their relationship in general...
I did also reread the Lords of the underworld; I rerembered hating the first few books because they were just porn without any character connection. And when I reread them... well my opinion didn't change much. Like Lucien and Anya are an amazing couple who I love, but with the others I was just meh. Especially with Strider I didnt get his attraction to the other girl. Like I got how he wasn't interested in Kaia because she slept with Paris. BUT him being sooo interested and obssesed with the other girl who was only interested in his friend is so confusing since that was literally the reason he didn't even consider Kaia as a love interest...
Oh and i ALSO reread the Kresley Cole (yes I binge reread all three series one after another in 2020 hahah). I did actually enjoy Kresley Cole more the second time around BUT I HATED the whole turture island arc. I do think the Regin/Aiden book was my least fave of the series and i just couldn't forgive Aiden at all for his actions because they were just so pointless. Like him literally turturing Regin as much as he was allowed to completly turned me off and no amount of his sob story made me feel for him.
The immortals ever after series and The lords of the Underworld actually have a quick little crossover scenes hahaha. And for me they are truly really similar.
Basically: I love Psy-changeling series, it is one of my fave ever and I hate Kiss of snow book with passion and I pretend that relationship doesn't exist
Oh I did also reread the JR Ward series around that time... and i couldnt finish it.. like the first few books were ok; but I was so hyped for.. I don't remember their names anymore but the M/M couple. And since I was so hyped for the m/m couple and seeing how much their friendship got ruined just wasn't for me. I read the spoilers for their book.. and WOW it sounds like the plot for their book was awful and i am sooo happy I didnt read it and I saved me time so I dont have to hate it with passion ahaha

The old reviews from the first time people read books over 10 years ago, from a lot of genres, is cringy for a lot of books. I always have to refresh to most recent.

When Sadist is the soft one you know the men in books back then were awful. Though full disclosure loved the Blackdagger Brotherhood. Granted I understood why one of the books went out of print because the ending was utterly ridiculous.

God, I read so many of these authors. Paranormal romance is the only romance I ever really enjoyed. I will say Acheron is one of the most heartbreaking books I have ever read and Styxx I couldn't get through because it just hurt too much.

As soon as I saw the thumbnail-I knew you were going to have some Paranormal Romances that probably weren't to your tastes.😅😅 (I remember all those Gena Showalter, Kresley Cole, Sherrilyn Kenyon, & such books being all the rage back then; and kind of having a bit of a rep for all being fairly similar. 🙃 Lollll)
Recently put a Nora Roberts book on my TBR myself finally, and was very curious know what you would think of her books too because of that, so I was glad to get a bit of a taste of that in this too-nicely timed! 😀 😂🤍
I'm happy to know that there were at least a couple books you didn't totally hate-despite how far the times have changed. I always feel kinda bad for you when you're giving all these fun concepts a try for us, like this, and they don't always really pay off so well for you as far as your own reading/enjoyment goes. 😁😊
Thanks for another great video, as always!! (You're really inspiring me to try and get cracking on my own reading goals already too.!)💜💜💖

I’ve read every Susan Elizabeth Phillips book and Call Me Irresistible is one of her weakest. Ted is a side character from her previous Wynette books and like you said, he’s not compelling. Anytime she writes a book that tries to weave together characters from her previous books, it’s a giant miss for me. Ain’t She Sweet is my favorite of hers and completely standalone.

    S. E. Phillips was the reason I fall in love with romances in my teens. My all time favourite one is Natural born charmer, still 5 stars years later. Close behind will ve Ain't she sweet? .
Thanx for reminder how old I am 😁

Idk what it is about BDB, but I’ve tried to get into it several times, and the slang the brotherhood uses throws me off every time. That, and the outfit descriptions and how hard the author tries to make the brotherhood seem tough. I can’t take it. It feels so fake, like they’re trying so hard it becomes a caricature

One thing I’m always noticing about anything Goodreads curated as far as romance is LGBTQ+ rep, and I still feel like we have a long way to go. I was just looking at the most anticipated list they posted for the year, and there’s so few of them compared to m/f. I’m pumped we’re finally getting more mainstream f/f, to the point where I think it’s pretty balanced with m/m in their lists, but overall both are still so small it’s cherry picking.

Well, there is a love triangle in Berserk and imho it's the best love story ever, but that is not the main topic of Berserk.
I'm confused and I hope so are you :p

I hate read the end of the dark hunter series. It started out good but then the later books became sooo repetitive and she keep using the same words and phrases CONSTANTLY. The Acheron and Styxx were just torture porn. Just constant rape and woe to me. The series started out so well its so sad i hated it with a passion by the end. But i had spent years collecting these books before reading them i hate read them.

One star for Kresley Cole? Blasphemer! Heretic! To be fair you can't really start that far in the series and get the context. Berserkers are part of Norse mythology, not just a dude with anger issues. Speaking as someone who has been reading romance since the late 80's.

Needless to say, I deleted the app. NEVER, EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TRY TO GET A PRODUCT OR SERVICE THAT SPONSORS A UA-camR! I have had problems with Skillshare, Function of Beauty, some coloring app, and I think there were others.
