Well, Mobius is a Post-Apocalyptic Earth where aliens called the Xorda used Gene-bombs which melted most of the Earth's Bio-Sphere into primordial soup which then transformed into Mobosaurs, Mobians and Mutates. So, my theory is that the Mobini are the animals that didn't melt into primordial ooze but still mutated to an extent like how the Overlanders are slightly mutated humans that didn't turn into primordial ooze.
Or maybe they could have lived in the shelters made by the Humans before the gene bombs were dropped. The books said that only Station Square survived, but maybe the animals in the other shelters survived while the Humans didn't.

But we can see that Sega has found an alternative so that the animals in the Japanese part of the license still have something very similar to pets like Chao or Wisps. A certain rabbit won't probably appreciate my opinion on the Chao.
If we get into the canon and videogames, there are tons of different kinds of animals, you got flickies from the classic era (Sonic 1 to 3&K), flickies of the modern era (SA1/2) then you have all kinds of Realistic animals and insects like Penguins, Dolphins, Jiraffes, Dogs, Bees, Spiders and many many more (SA1 onwards till today!) We literally see a lot of different realistic animals during the series, huge range of species and animals to! I like to think that the Mobians could be descendants of the Ancients just like the Chao, and have the Chao's ability to get traits from animals but much, much slower, in a more evolution-y kind of way. So they're less like the actual animals, and just associate themselves with the animals they evolved alongside Doubt they'll even remotely consider to establish any hard lore like that tho
All life on the planet was liquified when aliens glassed it and was cajoled together. The lifeforms that we see are a mix of the DNA that was left in that primordial soup. The "mobians" all have human dna, the "animals" all have human dna, and the Highlanders/Humans... don't, cuz they were off planet. Some of them anyways, I'm pretty sure some converged back into Humans due to there being high density populations of only us.
There's something that fascinated me about how that world treated that delineation of its inhabitants and the impact that had on their culture. I've always felt there was a vital impetus exclusively intrinsic to treading that line, an impetus that's needed to overturn the world's trend towards exponential stagnation. The Little Tail Bronx series did similar with the origins of its two races, but not at all to this degree or scope. I'm of the opinion that the game/IDW minimalist approach of city folk/islanders as the explanation really robs the series of profundity and undercuts the deeper storytelling it's been trending towards post-Forces.
My headcanon is that there are 3 different types of "animal" species in sonics world Mobians - anthromorphic animal/mystical creatures that talk and live amongst humans Mobinis - the little animal creatures that come from the first Sonic games, they're their own species, they are sentient but no evolved to the point of living amongst human society Animals - literally just animals like we have here on earth, non sentient regular animals I like the whole archie thing with mobians just being hyper evolved animals with alien dna. In an episode of tailstube on the official Sonic channel, people like sonic’s friends are from islands while humans live on continents. So normal animals are probably from the main land that somehow migrated to the islands.
5:41-7:15 this tragic history concerning the Tasmanian Devils is a major reason why the endangered species storyline was the one I was the most interested in. Plus, I think this is what Ian Fylnn was doing with the Echidnas during his run pre-reboot. The fall of Albion, Knuckle's rampage as Enerjak and Thrash's wicked plan. These events are basically the Echidna's hubris and past sins coming back to bite them in a big way. Also, lets go with your headcannon in that there were other Mobian species the Echidna's experimented on. Thrash encounters some of these mobians and tells each one of them about his plan for the Echidnas. They agree because on top of the Echidna's and brotherhood doing jack all against Eggman(with exception of a few), they had deal with Dark Legion numerous times.
Yeah, kinda like how they made the Prey and the Hunters, with the latter evolving sapience and the former remaining, well, prey. That would make a troubling lot of sense, actually. In Sonic world, carnivorous and herbivorous anthropomorphic animals coexist, and if the herbivors' diet is not problematic at all, the carnivors' diet leaves questions. What, or who, they used to eat? Other sapient beings? What the hell is the meat our omnivorous hedgehog Sonic eats in his chili dogs? Do carnivors just eat non-sapient (as they think) animals that were genetically engineered from their former prey and equally sapient brethren, like cows and pigs? Sheesh, and I thought Beastars were a dark take on society full of anthros. My drunk headcanon is certainly darker.
