Thank you! I’ve watched many brush lettering tutorials from different artists and this is the best one I’ve seen for beginners. Yours is the first I’ve seen that provides instruction on the proper application of brush pen to paper: Most instructors begin by showing you what the strokes are and how they are formed but not *how* to hold your pen and when to release the pressure on a downstroke. I also like your method of using grid paper when first starting to learn the strokes. The paper with the slanted lines can actually be too detailed, not to mention intimidating, for beginners. The grid paper is more familiar to most people and as you demonstrated, can be used to accommodate larger or smaller writing, as desired. Again, thank you for the excellent information and demonstration.
Hi, I have been struggling with hand lettering for nearly a year now. After watching your video it finally clicked. You offer information that no one else has and I've watched a lot of videos. I feel like a whole new world has opened up. Your techniques are invaluable. Wow, Thank you sooooooo much, I am changed forever, I finally understand. You are a great teacher. Have the best day! Chelle😍
Thank you very much. I have never heard those advices before I feel they are the best advices to give to beginners and I will apply them right now! One more time thanks a lot.
Hi ma'am, I was very irritated by the fact by upstrokes and downstrokes were getting interchanged and I wasn't getting how to hold the pen. But your video the way you taught and told how to hold the pen,now I am able to draw the strokes write without getting confused. I have seen many tutorials but no one mentions how to hold the pen. Thank you so much for these helpful videos.
So very helpful. I definitely release too late. I will go home and practice today! Thank you Kelly! Quick questions, what is the appropriate number of squares of height when using for a tombow marker? I think I try to squeeze the letters in too small of a space and it becomes a big mess.
Usually my x height with large brush tip pens is about 4 squares high. You might be able to do 3. That would be lowercase letters like a c e and so on. The letters with ascenders and descenders would be double that or close to that, about 8 squares (like the letters b, d, etc)
Brush lettering is hard for righties too but you can adjust a few things as a leftie. Here is a good blog post for lefties on my website www.kellycreates.ca/2017/07/04/lettering-for-left-handed-artists/
Today i bought 3 black calligraphy pens...it is flat tip size ...but I couldn't find colouring pens like yours...😢Now i have decided to buy on Amazon...I hope I will definitely get here.
There are many different kinds of calligraphy pens with different tips. You have to search for BRUSH tip pens. If you're in India, then you can buy Camlin Kokuyu brush pens and Sakura Koi Colouring Brush pens.

Thank you so much! I definitely was making that pressure releasing mistake and didn't realize it!
Even I still have late release sometimes! lol
This was perfect. Thank you for the advice. I was having such a hard time identifying where to release pressure.
The transition of pressure is the key to calligraphy and takes a lot of practice. :)

Perfect tips. I was actually ready to give up trying! You’ve given me hope that I might be able to learn how to do this eventually!
Hi Barbara...oh no, don't give up. When I started learning, it took me about 4 months of daily practice until I saw improvement. You got this!

Is the grid and dot paper smooth paper? I've bought handlettering workbooks and it's not smooth, just regular paper.

I use pointed pen but not very often.

Do you have any advise for a lefty? Or is it all the same as righties?
Brush lettering is hard for righties too but you can adjust a few things as a leftie. Here is a good blog post for lefties on my website www.kellycreates.ca/2017/07/04/lettering-for-left-handed-artists/

Does your middle finger not hurt cuz of the pen pressure? Mine does. :(
No, my middle finger doesn't hurt. I hold the pen very lightly not tightly.
I hold. my pen very loosely. Shorten your practice sessions if your hand hurts
So beautiful
You're so kind.
Thank you 😊😊
