    Hi Jenn, just wanted to say you have one of the best contents in the platform! Not only the content itself, but how you deliver it! I’ve been devouring all your videos since I’ve started following you, and I cannot recommend your channel enough. Thank you for this! I tried so hard to make black turtlenecks work for me, but my current opinion is that they work best with more dramatic face types, whereas all my facial features are round. Now I’m seeking out more open and especially wider necklines, so would definitely be interested in videos on boatneck and off-the-shoulder styles.

    I'm super grateful for this video. It is the perfect example of the difference between professionals and amateurs.
    You never talk in absolute terms like "must have" or "staples".
    Even as well-intentioned advice, this rules show lack of knowledge. Not every garment is for everybody and saying: that thing is an staple can be even harmful when people buy and dress them and feel uncomfortable, washed out or, well, uglier.
    so when you go above all the noise in social media and say: stop, look at yourself and think about your features before following the rules, you are empowering women (and men) that are not canonically beautiful. And that is a marvelous proof of your professionalism and of the power of your profession to make people feel better about themselves.
    Also, I love that you pick examples of truly beautiful women that don't fit the rules.
    Personally, I don't own a black turtleneck and you have persuaded me I don't need one.
    I don't look anything like you, but we share many characteristics such as broad shoulders, a prominent lower face, and high contrast in our coloring. So a lot of what favors you also favors me and it helps me a lot to understand why.
    Bye the wat, I find the boat necks are really flattering on me and my only black sweater has one. Do you wear them?

      Thank you so much for this comment ❤️ It’s so encouraging to me to hear these words. 🙏🙏🙏
      I don’t particularly hate boatnecks but I feel I just never reach for them when shopping. I don’t have a short neck but I self-consciously think that the horizontal neckline accentuates my shoulders more? I do like off-shoulder sweaters and tops though!

    • @avlsoc

      Very well said. Definitely don't agree with everyone suiting a "must have staple". My biggest items I feel like this about are turtle necks, high waisted jeans and camel coats/trenches. Too many variables in individuals to make an item universally flattering. I can't wear turtle necks due to a slight double chin, short neck. Highlights something I am conscious and makes it look worse than it really is. Also, if you have a large chest it can not be the most flattering. Plus a lot of people don't suit black near their face, even if wearing make up.

    I have always hated turtlenecks, and unless icy weather requires one, it's a no for me - lol - even then, I'd opt for a wool scarf first! I'm at an age now where a turtleneck would camo a crepe-y neck, but I'm still Team Open Neckline. Reason being that I've always been tall rectangular and flat-chested, and I think a v- or lower neckline is feminizing. Appreciate your content, and wish you a peaceful and happy holiday season!

    I'm a soft classic and I absolutely love turtlenecks. My neck is rather lean and long and they suit me very well. I also own a black one, however I must say that due to my very low contrast (light blond hair and eyebrows), it looks very separated from my face and just too harsh. So I agree that a black turtleneck is definitely not a wardrobe staple for everyone!

    A "Closet Staple" should be something that works for you personally in such a flattering way that it is a constant. For some it may be a black turtle neck, for others a simple dark V neck, again it could be a cream cable.

    Great explanation once again. I often like turtlenecks and mocknecks although on paper I'm not the ideal candidate for them, but what the heck I enjoy the look and feel classy when I wear them :D I think the mockneck looked great on you as well.
    I have to say this though: I was surprised when you said you're insecure about your shoulders, as I think you should be proud of them! I have broad shoulders too and I've always liked them, thanks to my my mom who often complimented me on them and how stately they look. I tend to agree, it's not a bad feature at all to have. I think width in the upper body creates a beautiful décolleté, which is a very attractive and feminine feature to highlight with clothing.

    I'm not 100% sure on my kibbe but I think I'm a natural, I can wear wide, slouchy, knitted roll necks, but anything with a high neckline fitted to me skin makes me look so constrained. I also have quite a blunt natural-style essence in my face. So its just a no 😂

  • @SolveigMineo
    @SolveigMineo 9 місяців тому +2

    100% true ! Also, if you have a Romantic or Theatrical Romantic essence, a basic dark turtleneck might look too "geometric" for you. R and TR look better if the turtleneck has an intricate edge (picot, lettuce hem or lace) or luxurious fuzzy (mohair, fur or lacey knit reminiscent of Orenbourg shawls). You can wear a collar in these materials on top of a turtleneck and you will look fabulous.

    I belong to the Gamine family. I need high neckline and dark colours, especially near my face. I am a soft winter and need contrast in my clothes too. Light colours blur my contours, which doesn't look good. I have a normal-length neck, narrow shoulders and a rather small bust. Dark turtlenecks look great on me ;-) That's just how different we are. I don't think a white T-shirt is for everyone either, which is always touted as a must-have.
    Thank you so much for another great video!

  • @nusskernmischung5428

    Great video as always and it made me realize something important!
    As a soft Autumn with a really really long and slim neck, wide lower third and square defined jaw, broader but bony shoulders, small bust and small waist even a (tight fitting) black turtleneck looks better on me than a v-neck top in my best colors… I think it‘s because it compacts the whole area from jaw to waist and makes it seem more structured and defined, and kind of tackles a lot of areas all in one (covers extremely long neck, diffuses the transition from broad to too slim to broad, defines chin area, accentuates petite frame while covering visible bones ribs and throat, accentuates waist line and creates an inverted triangle shape towards my waistline where only a weird long straight line would be), so just like in color analysis where there is a primary characteristic, I think in our body types (I never fit any category except the wave type and have a hard time finding clothes at all because I‘m tall but also petite) there is one as well, and for me it just has to be my long neck.
    Also, I personally think that our distinctive features in our faces like for me my square face and jaw is something we‘re supposedly trying to conceal but I found myself also liking it when we bring that distinctive feature out, I don’t know why… I think it’s noticeable in Liv Tyler because she has that „long“ feature but with long hair and a middle part and a v-neck dress she looks stunning and ethereal! So maybe she is an example of accentuating what you’re supposed to hide?
    and I personally think a black turtleneck can look good on anyone, it‘s such an understated and elegant look and brings attention to our unique faces nevermind any shadows that might be accentuated. I think you looked beautiful in that black mock neck!

    • @stylerefinement
      @stylerefinement  9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for this comment! I agree with you - although from a balance perspective a lot of tips will lean towards concealing or making certain characteristics less prominent, but I think accentuating them also brings out the uniqueness of your features! ❤

    Always interesting.
    I love most turtle necks on me, but almost all give me a headache within an hour.
    My body hates anything fitted on neck, waist or torso....anywhere in general.
    Terribly frustrating.

    Hi Jenn, your unique perspective is why I love your channel and keep coming back. I have a long neck but fairly narrow shoulders, so am always looking to visually broaden my shoulders. You explained it beautifully.

    I think the mock turtle neck looks really good on you, personally. It really highlights how shapely and petite/fit you are around the shoulder and neck area. I think it draws attention away from all the visible throat "organs and muscles" that us slender women have on display. I have a recessed jaw/chin and I love a dark coloured ,thin ,cotton and fitted turtleneck but the chunky ones look horrendous. I think that is because I'm narrow and delicate and my face is short and I lack any real sharpness in my jawline to define my face in separation from the chunky turtle neck, so it just kind of drowns me really ?

    I understand what you are saying, but are we creating self hate? I’m plus sized and for years didn’t have options, so I got what was available. Only we as women are this critical, except your uncle. BTW: I would be blunt with him, glad he’s your uncle not mine. Your chin is beautiful. These rules aka guidelines make women even more hyper critical about themselves when someone might just like how they feel in their clothing and skin. I was bullied as a child and I’m not sure how to feel about all these rules. Plus a variety of makeup was not available during the 80s and 90s for black women, contrasting still is difficult. I’m trying to be open minded. Why can’t we like what we like?
