- See my newer video on the same job, it is shorter and the audio is much better. • Convertible top motor ...
Still consult this page for information though.
How to change the transmission fluid in a ford mustang convertible 2002. This information should be useful for changing fluid in many mustang convertibles and other cars and with other convertible top motors.
Research or Consult your make/model dealership for proper transmission fluids for your car. Just because I did not use the reccomendded transmision fluid doesnt mean you shouldnt.
Notes:
*After 10years and the transmission fluid being added-to at year 8, at year 10 it was black and filthy. Change if if its 6-10years or older. Research this too if you'd like.
*My measurements were wrong. I probably was able to put around 8oz of fluid in.
*Do not use water to clean out any bottle used for transmission fluid. Water does not clean out oil, it stays seperate. - Авто та транспорт
Thanks this video really helped me out. Someone was going to charge me $310.00.. Sad... I love youtube
I just bought a new top motor for my 90 vert, so I'll be switching the lines that feed into the side of the motor, hope it all goes smooth, your vid really gave me an idea of hoy to approach this job. thanks.
You are welcome. That's why I made the video when I did because there was not really a video on here yet about it.
To actually respond to your question, yes it was going slower for me and replacing the fluid increased the speed, or brought it back to what it is supposed to be.
Thanks for the video. VERY helpful. After reading some articles about it, they made it sound waaaay simpler than what you explained here. All in all, I guess it is pretty simple. I was thinking I needed to replace my motor but do you think changing the fluid out would be the best place to start instead? Thanks!
Assuming you have the E brake up and the car is in park when you go to try; if it is not doing anything at all it could be a number of problems. If you are hearing no sound and it seems like the motor is not trying to do anything the first thing I could check is the fuse box for the convertible motor. After that I'd make sure the fluid is full. After that I'd go to a mechanic (because I wouldnt know any better.)
Im not sure how much someone normally has to. Mine is leaking so I have to every 2-3 months. your motor could be leaking, but I found that it was the cylinders on the sides of the car that are leaking in mine. Its not too difficult to figure out how to pop out the side consoles on the side of the seats to check. Just go to an auto store and check all the transmission fluids, others will be compatible and will list them on the cover (example : Compatible with Mercon II III IV V)
Sorry for the delayed response. I was out of touch with my inbox. I just suctioned out what was left. I dont believe there is much of a problem leaving any old fluid in there, but I tried to get out as much as I could because it was so dirty. No need to bother with a pump.
Ok I'll try that 'cause I'm not sure, I just bought the car last year. Thank You very much.
I do not know, but it is worth replacing, or if you are lazy, you could just add to it (it might be running low). If you are going to go through the trouble though you may as well replace it. If you keep operating it and something is not right, you might risk breaking the motor.
If the fluid has never been changed that could be causing it. Changing the dirty fluid increased the speed mine was able to go up/down. The previous owner was probably the first one to change the fluid after the car was 9 years old, and it was about to stop going up/down because of it.
Thank you for posting
where did you buy the clear little re-fill bottles?
Same thing I would suggest to the others, if the fluid is dirty or low it could be causing it to go slow. Sorry for the delay in response.
HI, where do you get the fluid? Thanks.
Thanks for sharing!
No problem, you are welcome!
Also know though, I am not a mechanic, this is however what I would do if I was in your shoes.
I have a 2001 mustang and the top doesn't hesitate that much to go down but it takes forever to bring it back up. Was this also your situation?
Question: How often does one need to do this for a convertible? I did this for the first time in my 2001 back in April. Here it is, August and I am finding myself doing it again. Do you think it could be an internal problem with the motor? I wouldn't think that I would have to replace it so soon. Maybe it's the type of transmission fluid I'm using. Where did you find your Mercon? I haven't had any luck! HELP!
cobragirl15 I have seen it leak through the floorboard and below my car. And that plastic is easy to break, from taking out the side consoles and whatnot I've accidentally broken a few little pieces but it hasn't affected the integrity of the interior at all. I've just had to be careful.
Hmm leaking. Would you be able to see it on the floor of a garage after the car had been parked a while? Maybe mine is leaking too... I always hate "popping" any of that Ford plastic out because I'm scared it's going to break or not fit right again. Thanks for the insight! I'll check it out next time I am forced to refill the fluid!
You are very welcome!
Behind the rear seat, basically in the trunk right by where the hood retracts into. I have another video posted on how to remove the back seats.
I agree. There was wind and it made this audio horrible. I uploaded a new video that is shorter and the audio should be better.
First search what fluid is good for your car, then just look for regular bottles of transmission fluid in auto stores. Many of them will say on the bottle that even though they are one brand and number, that they work for 5 other brands/numbers. Just find one that matches with what you need
mine just opens... it doesnt close.. do you think it just needs oil?
I own a 01 mustang, and it takes a while for the convertible top to come up, its very slow, any ideas of how can i fix it? I'll appreciate any options. thanks.
I wouldnt know where to start. If it doesn't try to do anything I would first look in the fuse box and find the fuse related to the conv. top. If that is blown, fix that. If it isnt, and the top does not try to do anything, then you might need your motor replaced. If the fuse is working, and when you try to lower the top you can hear it is trying to do something, then check the fluid and make sure it is full. After that, if it doesnt work I would go back to looking into replacing the motor.
You are welcome.
Lied, I guess I did know where to start. When I started writing this comment I had not thought of it though :)
try not to tear up plug as Ford doesn't make them anymore..I went on web and ordered a couple for spares.
aaigt meen thanks
I got mine from Pepboys.
