It wasn’t too hard to get the seat out? My 99 needs this done and I’m asking my hubby, who is not a mechanic, to try. Do we buy a replacement motor, or does old one just get new fluid in it? I was confused about that part. Thanks ❤

After watching this video, I was able to refill original hydraulic motor and a have successful test in less than 30 minutes. Total cost for fluid and baster, $23. Taking plug out took 1 minute. Broke seal with pliers, only using thumb and forefinger finger (pull, twist,pull,twist) until removed. Putting plug in took about 4 minutes. Only using thumb and forefinger (push, twist, push, twist) until seated. Thank you 🐻
nice! did your top go down and not go back up (until you filled the motor with trans fluid)? I have a similar issue with my top and it's worked perfect for a long time and now it's stuck down. I feel it's low on fluid.

Doing my 2004 Cobra’s this week, thanks for making this video. By the way got the many questions I’ve seen, ATF fluid is Automatic Transmission Fluid. You can get cheap $9.99 bottles at Auto stores.

I have a 2003 Gt mustang. Took me 10 minutes to get everything off. Needed a 11/16 I believe to get off the upper back seat. Now my motor was never sounded like a dying motor, but more of a whine trying to keep the top moving. Ended up taking out the plug filling it up with Lucas universal hydraulic fluid. Did the bleeding steps, and then topped off the fluid I was done. Now putting the plug back on sucked. Since it was old the plug expanded a lot. So I took a flat head and slowly pushed each side in until about half way or however far you can push it. Then my father showed me a trick to pinch and twist to get the rest on. Now it’s quiet and moving like a champ. I got 0 issues! The good part is if you do this and see you got a leaky motor you are already there to remove it! Hope this helps anyone!
Mine ended up just needing topped off. The motor was fine, it was just low on auto trans fluid. Also, the 2003-2004 Cobra seats were definitely held on by two 17mm screws, NOT two 10mm screws.
The GT has 11/16 screws, was a bit odd trying to figure that out. 17 didn’t fit and 18 slipped around too much

One question, I’ve seen videos where they just add new fluid. Was there a leak? Fluid had to go somewhere. It doesn’t evaporate.

Great video on hydraulic motor and I watched the one for lift cylinders. How do I know whether the problem is the list cylinders or the hydraulic motor? My top still goes up and down but very slow and pretty loud. TIA
Did you ever figure it out? I’d say the motor needed more fluid because if it worked even a bit, I’d imagine the cylinders are fine
Question, I have changed fluid, worked for a bit but then stopped, makes a very loud noise as it was struggling, saw a video that it may need to bled. I do notice it is leaking. How do you know if motor needs to be changed?

If you can hear the motor usually it's still good but there is really no way to know for sure. Problems going up are usually cylinder related.
Nice job. I would suggest either turning down or eliminating the filler music. It adds nothing.

get an allen key that will fit in the hole and use that to stretch it and it should pop in

Replaced both hydraulics on a 2007 Mustang GT. Reconnected and filled the pump, but it doesn't go past half way when putting the top up. Then struggles going down, then just doesn't work after that. Now, it could be that I put the plug back in, which I will have to check tomorrow, but if it isn't that, could the motor just not be working properly?
And do I have to have the car started and running to test the convertible top?

ATF= Automatic TRANSMISSION Fluid

use dot 3 brake fluid

It states it right on the motor. And don't listen to this guy. 👆
Brake fluid will destroy the lines and connections.
ATF is a conditioner fluid, which is why it's used and not brake fluid. Imagine putting brake fluid in your transmission....that'd be a bad day.
Can you just add more fluid or do you always have to put a new one in?

ok . was playing with my convertible top , which would not work, i got electronic probe device and started looking to see if the wires were hot. as soon as i touch one wire, i had some sound. i un hooked it from the top , sound but did not move, so i put it down and probed another wire, it started to move up. i took off the power switch cause it did not work with it..but does come up when it touch the wire with electrical probe, i'm guessing for one thing the switch was bad, now what do i do? i watched your video over and over. any suggestions would be appreciated, i really don't have any one else to ask. my car is a 1996 mustang gt 4.6l.

Tekachahedron top up. The shocks will be extended leaving the most room for new fluid to go in.

@@BM-gj8pj I put in fluid, last year, it Worked. Then stopped. I put in more in this year, now works again. I'm keeping an eye on it thinking it might be leaking but so far, it's not.. kinda odd that I had to put in fluid twice.. we'll see ... Thx for your response
@@kennyplay5982 Just had to replace my rams. They would leak fluid from the seals were the piston comes out over time. Do you smell ATF in the inside? I would pop the seats out (Super easy) and see if you can see any red liquid or get the strong ATF smell, it often abosrbs into the recycled carpet material under the backseats. If you have to keep filling it its def a small leak somewhere. Goodluck!
Yeah, I have a leak in mine, but this is my daily and it's hard to find time to take everything apart without having the replacement parts to fix it so I just refill as needed. With mine personally, I get about 10 reps until the fluid needs to be refilled.
Mine spits out fluid through the fill hole when I lower the top. What gives?

A good video would be how to raise the top in an emergency. Can't figure out how to remove the trim and get to the hydraulic cylinder/rods

Check out their video on replacing the shocks. It shows you how to remove the panels to get to the cylinders
There's no way to put the top up 'in an emergency'.
It's all electrical, so bad parts or no fluid means it's not gonna work. If you have power going to it, then it can be pulled by hand with one hand pressing the switch or help from a friend.
It's not like a miata or solstice top that only goes up and down by hand.

What are symptoms of a bad motor? Because I just replaced both hydraulic press and top still won't go up. only works going down, I filled with fluid as well. Nothing is working
The motors usually get very noisy when they are going bad. If you have good cylinders and a properly bled system and it still doesn't work its probably the motor.

Atf all purpose, motors say atf 3 but any atf really works

You probably have the lines that are attached to the cylinders swapped.

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) any kind of it. Cheapest is best, auto stores have small 9.99 bottles of it.
my top started going up one side before the other amd then come all the way up but now it doesn't come up at all unless its helped amd it kinda slames down when its put down... should i change the motor or the cylinders? eventually ill probably change both.

But im gonna replace the whole top when i get back from basic in a couple months so ill keep that in mind before i also by a new motor for $200... i think its the motor because it leaks water in the back when it rains, right above the motor.

Such a poor design to have to remove seats to get to the motor.
Not really. It two clips and two bolts. Unless youre lazy as shit it's not a hard process. Alot better than having to remove the top or something.
