What remains of the Neanderthal in us?

- Since his first bones were discovered in Germany in 1856, Neanderthals have raised many questions in our minds.
Why did it disappear 30,000 years ago? Do we still have some of his genes in us? What does the work on deciphering the Neanderthal genome give?

I am truly fascinated by these intelligent, empathetic, and resourceful people. They were, I believe, as human as we are and I'm glad a bit of them lives on in most if not all of us. I'm proud of my bit of Neanderthal DNA--these people were survivors and hung on in conditions that might well do for many humans but managed to keep their humanity, caring for sick and injured members of their group, burying their dead and even managing to create a bit of art. This is why I refer to them as homo sapiens Neanderthalensis.
I am 2.6 Neanderthal. My older sister has a huge overhang brow. The most is 3.0. She would be a 5.0
It’s very possible that modern Homo sapiens would never have made it through to today if earlier ones hadn’t interbred with Neanderthals. I think they have given us much of their physical strength, and ability to persevere in very rough conditions.
@@kgs2280 I think that is very possible.
Yes my DNA test showed a bit of Neanderthal .. and I got a very nice looking brow ..lol
Africans have very very little Neanderthal DNA and they are strong, caring, and intelligent. We of European descent are all 98% African. The 2% Neanderthal DNA gave us lighter skin, maybe diff hair, maybe more blood clotting factors. Nothing so grandious as what you mention
Well done documentary. I learned things I did not know. Like Neanderthals being around for 300,000 years. We still have a long time to go before we are that successful as a species. Looking at the state of things today we'll be doing good to survive another 300 years, much less 300,000.

You are quite the optimist---I was going to give us maybe 150 MAX! I think it's called being too smart for your own good?
Well said 🎉
Well done as a fictional piece maybe! There has never to this day been ANY proof of ANY pre-historic human ever! There have been 1,000's of synthesized versions (faked bones and fragments) Still NO actual bones! That leaves the conclusion that they did not exist!

When a young teacher 55 years ago I told students one day it would be discovered Neanderthals did not die out, but intermingled. I also told them that the land bridge and mere 20,000 years ago being the sole humans to settle Americas was millennia off and not the only route.
And the "indigenous" American "natives" stole the land from Neanderthals! Reparations for those of us with Neanderthal genes! LOL!

Your translation is repeating his point. The act of mixing and making children is ALL he cares about. No judgment. That’s what he doesn’t care about, judgement.
He is referring to Svante Pääbo. A Swedish man who speaks Swedish. An Indo-European language like that of the Hittites of Anatolia.
Weren't the Denesovains and others also here around same time?
From what I understand, the Denisovans were generally further east, as in Siberia and maybe as far south and east as Mongolia. They apparently interbred with modern humans in other Asian countries. Although this video says that there is as much Neanderthal DNA in Asians and South East Asians today (of course I heard that just as I was typing the first part of my comment). I guess the origins and intermingling of Denisovans will be a separate video, as it seems to me that if there are Asians with Neanderthal DNA, some of them are likely to also have Denisovan DNA as well.
Love to hear more about them too...
All I could find about Denesovians is that they found a bit of finger bone somewhere in a cave in China and that some of us have some of their DNA. If anyone sees anything else I would love to see.
Man by any other name is still man.

I agree with the premise of this video’s point. The Neanderthal was highly intelligent. Why then, you would still paint them as unkempt and ungroomed, is beyond me. I am positive they combed their hair and tied it back or cut it or braided it. They bathed. They had better teeth than was portrayed I’m sure. Not as much carbs and sugars. I hope the idea they were neat and tidy and organized will gain popularity. 😊
Better yet, they were probably human.

About one of the best narrators and shows that I have seen on the subject
This was a most interesting story of the history of mankind . Enjoyed it so muck
thank you !
Absolutely fascinating, the parts that stuck out to me most were that according to 23 and Me I have more Neanderthal genes than 3 out of 1,000 people tested, I also have more Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, and Greek genes that I have, German, Scottish, Irish, British and Welsh. What I don't understand was the references to the great apes as my whole immediate family are Rh O- blood type and my tooth roots are 3 times longer than most humans. My MtDna also relates to a skeleton found in Scotland dating back 8,000 yrs. named Ava.
Good luck at the dentist.
Yay!!! A fellow Neanderthal! I have more Neanderthal than 97%of the population and I'm proud of that. I've always joked about my brow ridges and forehead , saying that I'm either part monkey or Neanderthal and that was years before 23 and Me! 😂😂😂 an orthopedic surgeon measured my limbs and told me they are abnormally long and not "in proportion" with my overall body. I do have however a short torso and long legs. Thank God! I have abnormally long tooth roots as well which has caused serious sinus issues throughout my life.
But yes, let's be very proud of our ancestry!😊
Thank you fellow Neanderthal!
You have no idea, when I needed to have all my teeth removed, it took 32 injections of anesthesia to remove my 14 remaining teeth and I was so anesthized that I forgot to ask for my teeth, but I saw then and they were truly scary. Since that time I have seen videos reguarding Denisovan remains and they also seem to have extra long tooth roots.😎
Hey, in this day and age in America maybe we all need to be More Neanderthal. 😎

I remember when a Neanderthal grave of a child was found and it had clusters of pollen and decayed vegetation that would strongly suggest the Neanderthals buried it with flowers.

@@fairchild1737 No, she is european homo sapien 5.0. Neanderthals have no chin and low forehead. Homo sapien have a chin and a high forehead. Huge high forehead, maybe.
Carefully chosen actors aside, its hard not to notice the Neanderthals skull shape, defined brow ridge and protruding face/jawline closely resembles that of the African "modern human". It would seem this socalled primitive "ape-man" migrated out of Africa, up into Europe where it adapted and survived until a more advanced species native to Europe wiped them out either through conflict or gradual interbreeding. There is a study that suggests the Caucasian homo-sapien evolved entirely independently of the "out of Africa" model.
A remarkable revelation. Thanks for sharing.

I feel the same way about meat. Especially when I was pregnant - most other food tasted like dust in my mouth, if it wasn’t meat. I make myself eat vegetables and fruit. Carbs like grain aren’t really my thing. Neanderthal heritage?
nah grains (carbs) are a newer addition to our diet 10k years. So cultures that grow them will have more tolerance to them. It isn't related to N genes as homo sapirns also were meat eaters and hunter /gatherers until the advent of farming and "civilization" which also brought on the use of slaves for labor and shortly after major warfare as other groups desired what entrenched peoples had .(much as raids on other hunter /gatherer tribes would be to claim women for breeding and to reduce competition for foods in the area. The homo sapiens were the travelers who entered the neanderthals land so food was likely the motivating factor for their movement out of Africa.(as Neanderthals also moved out of Africa 100,000's of years before)
I couldn't get enuf meat when I was pregnant, either. Especially hamburger.
And for some weird reason, molasses.
GRAZIE MILLE !
Loved this!
But if many of us have some neanderthal dna, well then they're not extinct are they? They simply bred with homosapiens sapiens over thousands of generations (many others too) and became diluted.
Hence many of us have a few % of their dna.
Please feel free to disagree/explain. The film made no clarification of this important point.
No, you make perfect sense with your conclusion. I agree with you.
No. The theory is rather that Nenaderthal was largely genocided and that the interbreeding that took place was the fruit of Neanderthal women captured especially at the beginning of the arrival of sapiens, less when it was in the majority or it hunted Neanderthal.
My DNA tests reveal I am in the 90th to 95th percentile of Neandertal DNA. I used to think "I miss those guys." Now I know why: there's a little bit of them in me.

Very interesting. Well done documentary.
I'm halfway through the video and I think it's incredible that they don't mention that Neanderthal Man disappeared in the territory that is currently Portugal 🇵🇹, the western most point in Europe! They were constantly pursued by Homo Sapiens to a place from which they could no longer escape: ahead, Neanderthal Man only had the sea! Without any possibility of escaping, it was here that Sapiens decimated them, ending the species!
that is so sad
Uma coisa certa é que o homem deu fim em todos.😅
I also think that homo-sapiens decimated the Neanderthals. maybe because they were fucking our wives? They liked bad boys (that hasn't changed too much!), and it must be admitted that they had the looks for the job!

No, I don't believe their tools and technology, their knowledge of plants and hunting were lost: humans shared the same areas so it would be more than natural for them to learn survival skills and technology from the Neanderthals that was beneficial, perhaps even superior. Perhaps some tribes even learned/copied some aspects of cultural and religious practices, just like humans do today.
After Neandeethal had to scare the sapiens. it is a force of nature. Imagine he could jump from the 3rd floor of a house and it was a normal jump. He hunted with stakes that he drove into the animal and kept the stake in his hands fixed to the ground. Our sapiens ancestors were also stronger than us and faster but not able to face the animal like that. They hunted with more vices, for endurance. sapiens is one of the most enduring species on the planet.
