Im german(southbavaria alsmost on the border), and I sometimes go to berlin with my family. I’m honestly not really a fan of it tho because it’s really loud and dirty sometimes. But some spots are really cute!❤

    1) Not ALL Germans hate Berlin, but quiet a lot. Berliners attitude: "There are no mountains in Berlin, but if there were, they would be the highest in the world."
    2) This phenomenon you will find as well with France and Paris, UK and London, USA east coast and New York (ask a Bostonian!), or Austria and Vienna. Reason (exaggerated): WE are more, we are bigger, we have more culture, education and diversity than you underdeveloped peasants. (This was even the feeling in the GDR, Leipzigers, Dresdeners, Erfurters, Rostockers against Berlin.)
    3) For todays Germany: Hardly you will find another country (maybe Italy?)* that has been so decentralized and fragmented into up to 300 tiny Shires and Counties, Duchies and Principalities, Free Cities and independent Burghers, with their own currency, legislation, military etc. Over centuries and centuries. Before 1871 two major powers occured: Prussia and Bavaria. Many cities and regions were "Beutepreußen" or "Musspreußen" (no translation found, means: Forced to be Prussian by occupation or military defeat, never liked to be prussian, even until today. These often being catholic like Rhinelanders and Bavarians, or Münster, Paderborn etc. and Prussia being the land of Luther and Protestant Church. All this is still alive in modern Germany, is substantial in local pride. Being NOT a centralized country is German DNA.
    4) After reunification 1990 Berlin became the capital and there was of course politically no other option. But for other reasons other cities would have been a better choice: Any city with a deep citizen's civic mindset and a more democratic past (Hamburg yes - Munich not, Frankfurt yes - Berlin not, Leipzig yes - Dresden not). Since then one can observe a tendency to push and support Berlin everywhere. There is an infuential Berlin Lobby (and ZDF is master) to make the city more and more dominant - at the cost of others (mentioning Länderfinanzausgleich, but there are more). No doubt, Berlin is the most important German city in politics, media, culture, recent history, tourism. Not in economy, trade, logistics, science/universities, finance, traffic-connectivity or sports/football (sadly FCB is). "Give it all to me, I am the capital, I have the natural right." I hope all other major cities will fight strongly this unhealthy trend.
    5) Berliners (3.7 mn) have to live with the rest of the nation (79.5 mn) and the nation has to live with the Berliners. Let the shitstorm games begin.
    * ...or Switzerland. Switzerland was from the start to this day a perfect federal construct with a lot of referendums. It's fragmentation in Kantons is held together in Bern. The parliament and gouvernment there has pretty little power in comparison.
    Edit 1: grammar and typo
    Edit 2: addition on Switzerland

that the winter in Berlin is considered as depressing has nothing to do with the reality (Winter in Warsaw, Moscow and many other cities around the world is much harsher) but is an innter German/inner-Berlin stereoype which goes back to the time when coal ovens are much more used (actually its just since 'recently' that they are not mass used anymore - still in the 90ties it was very common) and post WW2 buildings which led to a all in all 'grey dark' and 'sulur air' atmosphere - in contrast to the summer which always was in Berlin very 'lively' and kind of fun/outgoing. Another aspect is that Berlin when it had a huge grow rate (end of 19ties/first decades of the 20ties) and many 'Mietskasernen' (tenement houses) and other structures were build it was considered as 'stoney moloch' (steinernes Berlin). Plus, the winter in Berlin (like in London or Hamburg) often comes with not much snow which adds to the stereotype, because a white snowly setting makes things also more lighten, prettier and pittoresque ....

in capital cities, everything you want and need like food, clothes, electronics and shelter are expensive and the jobs are always busy never almost never taken a break longer than 25 minutes of recess that's why I want to live elsewhere in Germany where it's affordable or budget-friendly where seniors and the youth can retire and enjoy life and the job is lenient or friendly to its employees either local or foreigner but offers promotion for better quality of life and habitual lifestyle, and the universities are affordable and highly prestigious altogether,, maybe in Hamburg or Cologne I'll establish a home or perhaps in Frankfurt or Bremen...

@@Manuel-gu9ls it depends on your profession/income and your fluency in German. Westgerman Cities (especially Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Frankfurt) tend to be much more expensive than Berlin but on the other hand you'll earn much more money. I'd recommend Berlin for expats who are not able to speak German because it'll probably be easier to find a job here than in other places (even though the other named cities are kinda international too). Cities in Eastern Germany like Leipzig or Dresden are much more cheaper than most places in Germany but are growing constantly (salarys lower). I'd recommend to you to compare cost of living and salaries in your field between cities on for example numbeo or other websites. I also think it would be good to research the cities or regions you're interested in beforehand because people/culture differs a lot

Well, I used to live in Berlin 1983 and 1984 playing professionell hockey back then and back then Berlin was absolutely minor in charging taxes. On top of that Berlin lost at that time thousands of people yearly because you were on that "Island" surrounded by the awful east Germany and traveling to West Germany was a nightmare. Plus then airfares were really high - not like today. Then Berlin had all Kind of other perks - no closing time for bars etc. So maybe resentment from older Germans today is from that time. I think younger West Germans today love or like Berlin. I have quite a big friend base and never hear anyone "hate Berlin". Berlin is awesome. Like watching your you tube stuff 😄🥳🙋‍♂️

Well... for several reasons I *despise* Berlin (I'm from Frankfurt a.M.):
    A) Fist and foremost it eats taxes like it's candy and providing really no return expect being the capital... but oh it's so chill by ignoring the rules and letting *everyone else pay* ...
    B) Berlin is a huge city build on sand in the middle of really nowhere... it's surrounded by Brandenburgian pattern empty...
    C) Here's the most important: It has historically absolutely *zero* right to *be* the capital - it was the capital of Prussia, a state that sadly no longer exists (I'm of Prussian descent but *not* Berlin...), it was the capital of Imperial Germany, it was the capital of The Weimar Republic (which was the same state but different government), it was the capital of the Greater German Empire, also known as the third Reich in the Anglosphere and it was the capital of the DDR, GDR, the communist dictatorship. So, what have all of these states in common? Yes, the Bonn and the Berlin (oh the irony) Republics would like you *very much* to know that they do not see themself in the tradition of these.
But Berlin is the capital of the Berlin Republic.
*Frankfurt* was the place of election *and* crowing city of the (Holy) Roman Emperors, Frankfurt was *the seat* of the German Confederation after the Empire, Frankfurt was the site and seat of the first *revolutionary German Parliament* and the hotbed of the *democratic revolution* in 1848, Frankfurt had a *Jewish* lord-mayor even *after* 1933 until the NSDAP forcibly removed him, Hitler *never* slept in Frankfurt because it to him *Jerusalem on the Main* , Frankfurt is culturally *at least* as divers as Berlin without being as chaotic or surrounded by neo-fascists and it's the *monetary capital* of the entire European Union, it's in the middle of Germany, in it's *historical heartland* , not on the *fringes of nowhere* in the Mark (a "Mark": German term for an uncivilized border region of an empire)...
So guess which city *I'd have picked as the capital* . . .
Oh and when I was first in Berlin with the school in ages past I told the cook in the I did *not* want Spaghetti Bolognese and so he gave me an *extra big male portion* - at this point I realized what the Berlin mentality is...🤣😫
"I made one mistake in my life - I should have burned Berlin!"

But it's easier to deal with because you only see this idiot once and there are more tolerant Germans than in other cities and certainly also because of the many friendly Canadians you meet here.

@@berniv7375 Yeah you can express your own opinion. But you can’t claim a general opinion for the natives in that country what she does due to the title. It’s just that dominant attitude all moved-ins especially in Berlin generate during a few years. And they forget 1 point what natives don’t like about Berlin which is high gentrification because of people like her moving here although they know we already have big problems here finding flats. It’s just egoistic.
