Slow cooker liners are a life saver. They save me so much time. Not terribly economical or environmentally friendly, but they save me so much time on scrubbing, soaking, and rinsing out my slow cooker insert.
I love using my slow cooker to make broths. I don't have to worry about stuff scorching to the bottom of the vessel, so I can let my chicken broth go for as long as i can to get out all of the flavor. Same thing with veggie broth! Just throw in your bones and/or veggie scraps, cover with water, and let it simmer for a while (I usually go for at least 24 hours. As long as the temp is high enough, you don't have to worry about germs/spoilage).
There's a blog called 365 days of crock pot and my favorite, a year of slow cooking. As the names imply, you'll find a plethora of recipes. My favorite is the Indian chicken curry. I make it without chicken sometimes and just add extra sweet potato or eggplant and it's delicious.
I never pre-heat & almost never thaw...but I'm a huge fan of the "dump" recopies. Throw a bunch of stuff in, come home from work, and there's dinner. Yum. Slow cookers are the best!
If you can, buy an oval slow cooker so you can fit in wider pieces of meat like baby back ribs. You want your meat to thaw, but adding a bag of frozen peas half-way through the cooking time is good. Otherwise, the peas get too mushy from overcooking. Layer your ingredients. You want the hard root veggies (carrots, potatoes, etc) on the bottom and things like onions, peas, tomatoes up on top. Use spices. Things like bay leaves and cinnamon sticks work great in a slow cooker. (Adding a cinnamon stick to beef stew is wonderful, don't knock it until you try it.)
What other spices and vegetables would you have on that stew with cinnamon sticks? And how much would it differ with cinnamon powder? The sticks wouldn’t have much use for me other than that
Contentious, maybe: don't pre-heat. Almost every slowcooker recipe you'll follow is written without the addition of pre-heating, and the resulting change in variables means things may not turn out the way you're hoping. Don't sear pulled pork or chicken. Aromatics often benefit from being added later in the recipe. Likewise, if your recipe calls for carrots or parsnips, try adding these in the last hour of cooking. They'll retain their flavor and texture.
I didn't realize a crockpot was a brand name! Imma call it a slow cooker from now on then... Which is handy to know considering I bought one yesterday!
Also, a how to live alone video would be fantastic. Just bought my own apartment! It's super close to friends but it'll be the first time living without roommates!
"The Vegan Slow Cooker' by Kathy Hester" I lived out of this book for like two years. So many amazing recipes! Slow-cookers are really for people who need to eat a lot, cheaply, and just cant be bothered with a lot of prep time. This is one area of adulting I had down quick. haha
you can prep a lot of slow cooker meals ahead of time and freeze them. pull them out the night before to defrost in the fridge, then pop them in the cooker in the morning before you leave for work.
Another thing to consider when it comes to smell. In the past I have left my slow cooker on while at work and have come home to a very upset dog, who sat in front of the slow cooker smelling the delicious meat all day. I try to bring the dog with me so she isn’t drooling in front of it all day long.
Depending on the slow cooker you own, you can take the insert and use it on the stove top directly, to sear your meat or sauté your veggies. Doing this directly in the insert keeps all the flavours in the slow cooker because you don’t lose any flavour that would have stuck to the pan. Don’t forget to deglaze before you put it back in the slow cooker, just to avoid burning anything onto the bottom.
I am so glad I found this channel bro. I watch your other stuff. I’m just now getting to learn to cook because I have some control over seizures. Kind of embarrassing since I’m 38 lol but I’m really really really excited to be able to do it. Thank you!
Get liners for your crock pot! Reynolds makes them, you can find them in the ziplock bag & plastic wrap section of the store. They’re safe to cook in and when you get your food out there’s no crusted on mess to scrape off the insert.
Alverant it’s just a recipe I made up but i would love to share! I do double batches, so two cans black beans (rinsed), two cans corn drained, one can diced tomatoes, one pound browned ground burger (I use turkey so it’s less greasy), 32 oz chicken broth, one packet taco seasoning and salt/pepper/garlic/cayenne to taste. I stir periodically but it does great on high or low heat and freezes great too!
Hi! Could someone help me? I just bought a vintage Creative Chef (fryer/cooker/steamer) Model SC 710, from the thrift shop. The settings are: Simmer, 300°F. , 350°F., and Deepfry. There's no manual, and none online. It has a glazed ceramic insert (pot) that fits within the main steel pot. Do I add water to the steel pot while using the insert, or not? Do I have to season the ceramic pot before use (it doesn't look used). It is glazed inside, but clay outside. I saw videos which showed soaking clay cookers in cool water for 12 hours before using. Is that applicable for this type of cookware? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks. 🤔
LIGHTER TEXAS CHILI - In a large slow cooker Ingredients: 1lbs lean ground beef, 1lbs lean ground other meat (pork, turkey, deer), 12oz pkg chroizo (pork, beef or vegan), 2 lbs mushrooms course ground in food processor stems and all, 2 cans pinto beans with liquid, 2 cans diced tomatoes with liquid, 1 large onion diced, 1 large bell pepper diced, 2 large toes garlic diced, 1 TBS cumin, 1/2 TBS chili powder, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp paprika, 12 oz leftover black coffee, 2 packs of instant grits ( to thicken at the end), hot sauce (to spice it to your taste, I like chipotle hot sauce) Directions: Dump everything except the grits int he slow cooker. Stir to break up the raw meat and incorporate all ingredients and liquids. Cook on high for 8 hours. At the end, mix in the grits one package at a time to thicken the chili to your preference.
In case you didn't see it, for me this comment is right next to another one recommending the book "The Vegan Slow Cooker" by Kathy Hester. I hope that helps!
AAHAHAHAH Imagine my shock. I close the valentine's video from scishow to google 'how to slow cook'. And fucking wham, first video I click, there's Hank Green, back in my face again. I don't get surprised or shocked easily but jesus christ. He's fucking everywhere.
Slice onions and use them to line the bottom of the slow cooker. Lay 4 boneless pork chops on top. Pour a 14 oz jar of sour kraut on top and add another 14 oz of water. Cook on low for about 6 hours or high for 2.5. So easy and so good with some mashed potatoes!
I clicked on this video expecting to see a slow cooker in action (with preparation) BUT instead got some random guy taking at me relentlessly, about prep times.
Depending on the recipe, you can either add cornstarch (make a slurry of a couple tablespoons and some water, add this and cook for maybe 15min) or take the lid off for the last hour or so to reduce the water content.

First time cooker reading up. Sounds logical. 👍
Love this! Can you do a How To Instant Pot/Pressure Cooker too?
Does anyone else get really excited when they see it’s a Hank episode? He’s engaging and doesn’t seem like he’s talking down at me.

except not pre-heating can cause the ceramic insert to crack and leak. That's what happened to mine.

We use ours a couple times each week. I will see about sauteing onions though. That sounds like a solid tip.

I was a bit disappointed with the lack of this is us reference
i just randomly searched for a slow cooking tutorial and was surprised by hank green hello i miss you!
One tip i use is, don't add too much liquid, this will be created within the cooking.
Awesome. John green.
I have 4 hours left out of 6 for my pulled pork. its my first time I'm so excited it smells so incredible
if you slow cooked chicken with the skin on you can broil the chicken before serving to crunch up the skin
Thanks for reminding me to start making this week's work lunches.
I love my crock pot, so many fantastic meals made with so little effort.
I make taco soup almost once a week in mine, it’s super easy and cheap and my family devours it.
Sounds yummy. Can you post the recipe please?

i just want to know what is your opening music???
I love the idea of a slow cooker but I am terrified of the idea of leaving a hot appliance on all day when I leave for work. Electrical fires!!!
This is making me crave a nice hearty stew.
incredible video How to Adult. I broke the thumbs up on your video. Keep up the amazing work.

It's SciShow!!!!
I love my slow-cooker, but there's a dearth of good vegetarian recipes. Mostly I use mine now for making hot-process soap.

Life was so simple when I assumed the dump method was foolproof
Thank you so much I'm 26 and I have no idea what I'm doin
Parsley won't add any flavor, it doesn't taste like anything!
Just kidding, it does.

Slow cooking seems to make watery sauces cause none of it is boiled off
Depending on the recipe, you can either add cornstarch (make a slurry of a couple tablespoons and some water, add this and cook for maybe 15min) or take the lid off for the last hour or so to reduce the water content.
I find if you take the lid off during the last two hours or so the water boils away
