Oh absolutely! Even for someone who never grew up during the monday night wars (I was born at the end of 1999) reliving the war is still some of the most entertaining content there is and an excellent way to end Thursday here in NL.
Austin was so popular at this point. When he wins back the belt at WrestleMania he would go on to set house show records that have never been broken. He was drawing 12000 to over 14000 people a show. Incredible.
This Raw is definitely a special one in my book. The first ever wrestling show I attended live with my brothers. The memories of seeing my hero, Steve Austin, in person. The main event of the show. Fond memories from 1999. Oh yeah thanks for replying to my tweet from the other day. 🙏🏾
My first show was in 1991. The undertaker faced a jobber and put him in a body bag. The ultimate warrior teamed up with LOD to face all 3 members of demolition. Hulk Hogan faced Sgt Slaughter.
I think the biggest thing holding the WCW back in 1999 is “nobody has any idea where to go with anything”. It’s not that the finger poke killed the company. It’s the fact they’ve done almost nothing with it in one month. Raw at this point was firing on cylinders, as all of their characters were peaking and new ones were being added. Were in February now and Brett Hart is wrestling d tier Chris Farley and Bishoff is spending an entire episode cleaning toilets.
I agree. I really always felt that, after the Fingerpoke of Doom, it should have been Goldberg ending the nWo. Signify that the nWo had poked the wrong bear, and now they're done for. But they even wasted Goldberg right after too.
I always regret living where I do, from a wrestling fan standpoint, looking back at what I missed in wrestling. With no pay TV/Cable until the 2nd half of 1999 and just relying on the few wrestling crumbs regular TV gave me in small town Australia, i missed soooo much. Didn't get anything WWF until some point in mid- late 1998 and no WCW at all until some point in 1999. I envy anyone that got to see WCW's peak period as it happened.
Man, I really hope that the WWF has some big plans for this "Higher Power" that the Undertaker's alluding to. Maybe it'll be someone that we haven't seen in a while that could really make the concept work, like Jake Roberts (hopefully he's gotten over his demons by this point). Or maybe it'll be some young & fresh talent who has a lot of potential; there's a guy I've been hearing about named Christopher Daniels lately, you know. Regardless, I'm sure this "Higher Power" is going to be something really cool. I mean, it's not like they'll just reveal it to be, I don't know... Vince McMahon, or something like that, all for a swerve, bro.
I was at this raw. It was my first live show. Seeing all the wrestlers in person was mind blowing!!! It will always be one of the special moments growing up!! Thanks for all you do for us!! Videos are always fire!!
I can't wait for Steve Blackman's Hardcore Title run. He'd bring that duffel bag o' nifty stuff to hit you over the head with. I'm sure WB's coverage of it will be flawless. MUFUG!
I remember seeing the beatdown on Flair when it first aired. I was really hoping for someone else to step up to face Hogan for The Title. Would've been a perfect time for Benoit/Goldberg/DDP to step up. Heck, Goldberg vs Hogan II would've gotten huge buys for Superbrawl.
My friend you yield incredible ability. You single handedly took the most boring day of the week in historys time and made it the must live to see day! Thank you for making my ordinary Thursday a holiday every week !!!!!
Bro, the Steve "Mufuggin" Blackman intro is always one of my favorite moments in the videos! But overall, I appreciate this Reliving The War series so much!!
Oh man WCW. In hindsight I have to giggle but also restrain from yelling at the screen "GIVE ALEX WRIGHT AND SATURN AT LEAST A LENGTHY FEUD WITH GOLDBERG!" Talk about death by backstage politics
I used to watch RLTW as soon as it premiered but I'm ngl it's been hitting different before work on Friday mornings. Thanks for the killer shows every week Brother
Technically, not until they hit under 3. Even during their 83 week run, they would win with 3.5/6. WWF was going through a real slump. At the moment WWF have hit a new popular/creative peak, while WCW is struggling to keep up.
In defense of the Bret Hart/Will Saso match, I have to give Saso a LOT of credit as had this match occurred in McMahon-Land, Saso would have had several spots where he pummeled Bret throughout the match and somehow pinned the Hitman. Prior to the match, Bret asked Saso if he wanted to have some spots to look good, to which Will said absolutely not. In his mind, he couldn't stand some schmuck coming in and outperforming a Master of their Craft, it's completely unrealistic. Ever the professional, Bret told Saso not to do anything without Hart being there to guide him through the match. Where was this mindset when Jay Leno beat up Hulk Hogan last year?
I think that ambush on Ric Flair was the last time I watched WCW as a teenager before switching to WWF full time. I don't think it was anything particular to do with that segment, just that that's the last memory I have of WCW before its final episode during the buyout.
From this I’ve got an observation and a question. My observation, there really is too many guys in the nwo, Flair was put in charge of wcw and the end result, he’s been beaten repeatedly and left face down in the ring, his son got stalked and beat up (not in that order), his mate Piper won the us title when one of the horsemen couldn’t even win a title shot and his attempt to bring back the tag championship has been so undermined that we had two thirds of it redone in this show. What connects all this, the NWO, who simply did what they wanted when they wanted because there’s so many of them, how are fans supposed to hope for any other outcome but the NWO wins if that’s all they ever do. My question, which do you prefer, shorter runs with the championship as two guys take it from one another back and forth until a final outcome, or long reigns where the champion holds onto the title for four or five months at least. In 98 the title changed hands four times I think, now in the opening months of 99, it’s already matched that number, but you have to admit it’s made raw must see.
Getting very close to the final Nitro I ever watched. I remember flair getting jumped I don't remember the rest of this episode of Nitro at all, but it was maybe a few weeks later that I stopped watching Nitro
If anyone was curious why The Rock was wearing the blacks shirts while wrestling for awhile, it’s because he had gynecomastia surgery, and his wounds were healing. If you look close at the end when he takes the stunner, you’ll see his bandages under the shirt.
Who is The Undertaker's greater power? Of course it's Steve Mufuggin Blackman! Even The Undertaker knows power when he sees it and gives the rightful worship.
Weird youtube subscription algorithm thing, where I watched Will Sasso witnessing Paul McGann's regenration in 1996 in a compilation just before watching this.
Remember this is the moment I stopped watching WCW The week before there was a hour into the show before had a match So the only thing I remember is in retrospectives
Its so odd. The past few months, ive been watching, thinking WWF and WCW were neck and neck; WWF had pulled ahead imo, but it was very competitve, and WCW won on more than one occasion. Then without realizing, its a completely different dynamic now. Now the WWF side interests me because it just keeps picking up steam, and the WCW side interests me solely off of how disastrous it is; i was even keeping interest in the NWO throughout 98, but it quickly ended these last few weeks. I knew WCW declined fast, but even then i wasnt ready for how quickly it would fall into borderline feeling like a minor league company.
One thing you didn't point out is that Scotty Riggs is substituting for Bobby Duncum Jr. as earlier on, the commentary mentioned Riggs and Enos only to say they meant Duncum and Enos only to correct themselves again that Riggs was Enos' partner tonight
The brother has lost his mind OMG that sh!t had me rolling I had to fire up the network and listen to that for myself 😂 good stuff brother don't lose your mind over the next couple of years reliving the war 👍
To help you: Bret wasn't wasted. Will Sasso was very over in that period and Mad T.V. was very, VERY popular at that time. Mad T.V. regularly beat out Sat. Night Live, to the point where Sat. Night Live actually moved their time slot (the first time since 80's). It was a smart move to get eyes on WCW. According to Eric, around that time he was focused on getting more eyes on WCW. He was trying to bring in normies. So he took a big name that everyone heard about, and worked him with a star that every on did recognize. It was smart business.
I remember the Bret Hart Will Sasso feud stemmed from an appearance Bret made on Mad TV when he was still in the WWF I think it was shortly after Summerslam 97 because he was champion around that time. Even though the sketch went on as normal, during Bret's second appearance when he was in WCW, he "went off script" and attacked Sasso and cited Sasso making him look like a fool during the first appearance as the reason. They even showed a pissed off Sasso looking for him during the shows closing credits. I also remember Sasso and Deborah Wilson acting icy towards each other on the show after this match. It's one thing I appreciated about WCW, they didn't waste their television appearances and guest spots and used them to further their storylines.
You should do a review of the two times Bret Hart appeared on Mad TV. That's where the feud started. Bret attacked Will Sasso on Mad TV as revenge for being humiliated a year prior in another appearance. Or just do an entire review of wrestlers on sketch comedy shows.
In England we had sketch humour but it was either character based gimmicky stuff like Little Britain or overtly political parodies like 2DTV which was the spiritual successor to Spitting Image.
Not Rock . It was Austin who single handedly saved WWE from going down the drain. Rock started to gain major traction only after Survivor Series 1998. It was Austin who was making audiences go crazy before that. Collectively they were GOLD
Not too long until Wrestlemania 15. Now the buildup to the first Rock vs Austin mania match starts here.
Thanks for giving us Reliving The War every week, Wrestling Bios. I always look forward to it every Thursday.
Hell yeah I one hundred percent agree and think of this , when it's all said and done, Let's just start back over and relive reliving the war!

The best thing about the attitude era is that every single character had a storyline and it continued week to week.
No.. that's the g*yest thing about the attitude era, and you obviously didn't grow up during it or witness it live at all.

The snowball known as WCW's downfall is getting bigger and bigger by the week, heading toward the ski lodge at the bottom of the mountain.
I think from now, until early/mid-April, the best WCW can muster is only losing by .5 twice and .7 once and it sadly only gets worse from there.
I can't wait for Steve Blackman's Hardcore Title run. He'd bring that duffel bag o' nifty stuff to hit you over the head with. I'm sure WB's coverage of it will be flawless. MUFUG!

Its funny to me that Perry Saturns dress thing is the most consistent thing in wcw vs all other storyline attempts being all over.
I like how Big Show's shirt says no gimmick needed then what he was doing a few years later.
